I wanted a slushie but they didn't have any in stock at all, no big deal. We ordered the guacamole and I got the enchilada verdes. The food here is top notch, and the drinks? EVEN BETTER! I had the mole enchilada's. They were soooo savory and rich. I could have eaten another serving they were that good! (Not that I could actually physically eat another portion because they serve you up plenty but I'm just trying to get across how delicious they were!) I also had the blood orange mojito which was probably one of the best drinks I've EVER had as it was minty, citrus-y, and refreshing! It was served up in a big glass! All of us girls ended up doing a Mexican candy shot which comes with a watermelon sucker on each of them. Very good! We normally love kalaveras, but the last 2 times we came, they seated us in too tight of a seat and was moved to a different seat and that worker complained about the seating and was rude about it and we left very unhappy on our 14th anniversary . This time we went to the Newport location for Taco Tuesday and they did not disappoint! We went around 5 and it was still happy hour too so they had $8 apps and $8 margs. We didn't get any drinks but we did get the queso fundido which was thick and yummy! Then the server asks how many tacos you want and gives u a ticket to go up to the taco bar. After picking your meat you they have self serve toppings and salsas! Overall really nice for 99¢, hands down best taco tuesday in OC! I will definitely come back! Went today for the first time for brunch. Unfortunately, it was an awful all-around experience. Where to start.... We were seated very promptly which was great as there was only one table seated in the whole indoor dining room. That's where the good news. I ordered the breakfast tacos with no ham, the Mrs. ordered the eggs benedict. Most breakfast items on the menu had ham features for some odd reason so my wife was excited to try it, I was not. The food comes out and they give my wife an omelet by mistake. She tells the server and he's confused after explaining 3 times she got the eggs benedict and not an omelet. We wait 10 minutes and the correct dish finally makes it to the table. My breakfast tacos were missing the side of potatoes, I tell the same guy who brought out the same wrong dish and he says ok and walked off. I finish my tacos and no one brings out my potatoes side. Our original waiter finally comes back out and we explain to him no side came and he goes and gets it, no apology was given nor credit. My breakfast tacos were in the top 3 worst I've ever had, two tacos, stale-tasting tortillas, and overcooked eggs, the best thing was the cactus in them. Ultimately, the dish was worth maybe $8, yet they charge $18 for it. The potatoes that came out very late were mushy and tasted completely overcooked and days old. My wife's benedict was $20 and while the eggs were cooked right the English muffins were sad looking, like the sole of an old boot and the ham was more like grilled deli sliced ham than homemade ham. Unfortunately, we paid $40+ for a meal that was worth $20 a best. Lastly, to add insult to injury I was drinking my water and noticed my lip was bleeding and found they are using glasses with chipped rims (photos attached for proof). I hope they improve but were appreciate a refund for this experience as well as this was one of the worst I've experienced. I'm shocked by all of the previous high reviews maybe there just not good at brunch. read more

Happy Hour Review: 1st time and I was excited to try as I had seen prior favorable reviews and noticed many locations throughout SoCal. However my experience sitting with a friend in the bar during happy hour was average at best. Food was good but we had to beg for chips & salsa and repeatedly chase down help to get drinks, food, the bill. I assume it was a staffing issue with only 1 bartender and no assigned bar table staff but they can do better. All staff seemed annoyed we were asking for help at the high top table in the bar. At one point we chased down someone to give us our bill and then they took it but it sat it on the bar for 10+ minutes until we inquired yet again. It seemed like the seated guests via table service had servers, so "maybe" we'll give them another try. read more

We decided to try the Newport location even though Orange is closer, we weren't disappointed. We came about 3ish so it was relatively dead, maybe 2 or 3 other small parties. We were seated right away. The table for the booth are sort of small so don't order a lot of food at once lol. We were served with chips and salsa almost right away. The green salsa by far was my favorite. It had a ton of flavor and a small kick but in a good way. The normal salsa wasn't great, something was off in flavor to me so I stuck with the green. It was margarita Monday so I tried the pina margarita. You can definitely taste the tequila in it and it was pretty. I was just expecting it in a different glass as they had pictured on the table but maybe because it's a special you get smaller portions ‍. We ordered the queso birria tacos and 2 carne asada tacos. Honestly everything was great. Food had flavor and I would definitely recommend! It is a little pricey so I'll recommend coming during happy hour which starts at 3pm. Our server was Lynette I believe. She was very friendly, gave her recommendations and we enjoyed the little convo we had with her. If your in Newport/costa Mesa area give this place a try. read more

Came in on a Friday night for happy hour from 3-7pm. Had a fantastic margarita (Mi Novia Fresca) which paired wonderfully with the quesa Birria tacos. I was in a bit of heaven with the heat from the tacos and the fresh, lightness of the margarita. My pup and I enjoyed the complimentary chips and salsa. They even brought him a little of container of water which is always greatly appreciated from dog owners! I ended with the flan with cajeta sauce which was wonderful and creamy. My friends from work and I went to Kalaveras to celebrate one of my friends' birthdays. It was my first time there, and I immediately fell in love with the location. As a Mexican, I appreciate all the touches it had that are a tribute to my culture. The happy hour drinks and food were a major plus! We all were able to have a couple of drinks and some food at a steal of the price. I had the taquitos dorados with potato and soyrizo. I'm not vegetarian, but I love trying new things whether they have meat or not, so I was excited to see they had soyrizo. It was my first time trying it, and it did not disappoint. I also had a couple of margaritas, which were all pretty strong. I wish they had a bit more of the flavor than the alcohol but they were not bad. I also had a Mexican candy shot at my friends encouragement. It was not strong in comparison to the margaritas, but it tasted really good. It definitely was my favorite drink out of the ones I tried. My only regret after leaving Kalaveras was not trying their sushi. Next time I will for sure though. read more
