This is my favorite diner is Spokane. I love the wait staff! Be wary of ketchup... My favorite thing about this place is HOW they serve breakfast: You order your basic breakfast dish: eggs, eggs & bacon, chicken fried steak and eggs. It starts as basic as 2 eggs and then works up in food and price. THEN, you pick your side. We are not talking a simple piece of toast. No sir! You pick from a whole new breakfast selection! Biscuits and gravy, belgian waffle, french toast, normal toast, cottage cheese, etc. My favorite combination is 2 eggs over medium, with biscuits and gravy. It comes with 4 sizable biscuits smothered in sausage gravy!! And it's all like 5 or 6 bucks! The same deal works for the omelets! Get a cheese omellete with a waffle for 4.99! Geez! Then you add on the student discount! I seriously love this place so much. I love all the servers. I really wish I could become a regular so that I could get my name painted on my regular mug! They have a machine that fresh squeezes oranges for your fresh orange juice. My wife and I had a work event over the weekend and wanted to eat breakfast at a real restaurant rather than the hotel/casino. This was conveniently located right off Division and had nice reviews so we stopped in. The parking was very limited and the wait was long (although, for the record, it was a weekend and Bloomsday.) But it is not a large place to eat; we were actually speculating whether it was originally a house converted into a restaurant. I'm not sure but it's pretty small. However, it was well worth the wait! Not only is the place charming, but the food was great! They had a large variety of breakfasts available. They also had a crazy selection of hot sauces to choose from, which I liked. The other thing I should mention is the food was very fairly priced. This is certainly an affordable place to eat. Service was also good and the waitresses were very friendly. We enjoyed our food and I wouldn't hesitate to go again for any meal of the day. It's a nice little place and I recommend it! read more

This place is one of the reasons Yelp is so great. I would have never gone in if it wasn't for the good reviews I saw. I have now been to Kalico Kitchen a number of times and it is one of my favorite Spokane diners for breakfast and lunch. It's a great locally owned restaurant that has good food, reasonable prices, and great service. That's pretty much the three things I look for in any restaurant, and Kalico Kitchen does them all well. It can be hard to find, you have to keep an eye out for the sign. I just always remember that it's right at the split where Division and Ruby merge together and it becomes a two way road again. Every time I have gone it has been busy, and the place isn't all that big, so expect there to be a wait. The wait isn't usually too long though, 15 minutes has been the longest I've had to wait. They have booths lining the walls, and in the middle are tables that can accommodate a fairly large party if you are going in as a big group (though expect a longer wait if you have a big group). On the menu they have all the things you would normally expect for a breakfast diner, but there is also some variety on the menu if you are in the mood for something different. My kids love the waffles, which are very good, and come with a big variety of toppings. I have yet to let them order the M&M waffle, but they ask me for it every time. Maybe one of these days I'll break down and let them get it. I do let them get a hot chocolate, which they have figured out comes with one free refill, making it the highlight of their morning to actually have dad let them get two hot chocolates! I've tried the chicken fried steak, the omelettes, and a few of the different Eggs Benedict choices they have. All of been very good. The service here has always been great for me and I think is really what sets it apart. Friendly and prompt even when they are fully packed. This place is a little hidden gem along Division that you probably drive by hundreds of times and don't think twice about. Give it a try, it's worth it. read more

If only I had more time left in Spokane, I would make it my goal to get a special, personalized, Kalico mug. Every Kalico "regular" gets a mug with their name on it and I want one! It would sit on a special shelf with all of the other names of Kalico elite. There it would wait anxiously to be filled once again with piping hot coffee upon my next visit. Kalico is everything that you want in a weekend breakfast place. Waitresses that call you "hun" (in the nurturing, motherly way...not the bitchy, head-cheerleader way), coffee pots with orange spouts, squishy vinyl booths, individual jam packets, and OF COURSE delicious food. Also, I've never been up early enough, but I've heard that before 8:00 am you can get a pancake, bacon/sausage and an egg for 2 bucks! What a deal! read more

Cute little breakfast place! I came to Spokane for Hoopfest last weekend (just to watch, not to play) and a friend that I was staying with took me to this place for breakfast. First of all, the food was delicious! I'm not a big fan of the sweet breakfast dishes, and they had plenty of salty, soul-satisfying foods that soaked up all of the alcohol from the night before. I ordered the breakfast burrito with a side of hasbrowns while my friends ordered the omelettes. They serve enormous portions of food at cheaper-than-Denny's prices and at much better quality than Denny's. Looking around, the establishment had a lot of personality too. I noticed that on one side, they had shelves of coffee cups with various names. It turns out that if you're special enough, you get your own personalized cup for use during each of your visits. Loved it. Went in about noon on a Sunday, which I usually avoid like the plague, but this place was nice, short wait, cosy, but not claustrophobic and great food. For $11 you can get a hungry man breakfast with everything. Had a bacon waffle, excellently executed, crispy outside, fluffy inside and the bacon wasn't all clumped in the middle. This place was on N. Division in Spokane, then they moved to the old Shari's location on N. Monroe at Indiana/NW Blvd. At the old location they were the best. Now at the new one, everything has changed. Quality at all phases has diminished. Today I ordered a Club Sandwich with fries. My friend a Reuben with onion rings. After receiving our order, I noticed that my bacon was raw. I sent it back to recook. My friends onion rings were not cooked. I also noticed that my friend had open faced the sandwich and began picking just the meat. Said it tasted funny. Later that day(about two hours) I needed to make a quick trip to the restroom. I have been coming to Kalico Kitchen for years and have always been impressed with the customer service, the readiness to refill my coffee cup frequently without having to be asked, the interest in regular visitors, the availability of specialty hot sauces, personalized coffee cups on the wall, gatherings of happy people visiting with one another, an atmosphere of good will, etc. Then last year, my daughter was at Kalico with a friend she hadn't spent time with in years and, after they ate, they chatted.. until someone approached them and told them they had been sitting there too long without buying food, who then asked them to leave and vacate the table for someone else. My daughter was made to feel ashamed; as a result, no one in my family has been back, except for myself, and I came because the service was still great and I like the food. So today, I decided to check out the new location on Monroe. None of the servers were familiar to me. As soon as I entered, a young girl asked me if I would like to sit at the counter; since I wasn't given the option to sit at a table, I said yes. There were two elderly men, one seated at each end, and I sat in the middle. Then I found out the stool was wobbly and narrow with very little back support. (Frankly, no one should place a gray haired fat woman on an unstable stool when she hangs off both sides of the seat as it wobbles back and forth. The fact that the server saw a single person instead of a couple or a group and decided the stool was appropriate irked me right off the bat.) While I was waiting, watching the four or five servers talking with one another in front of the cooks' area, I realized there was a single chair at a small table at the end of the counter where no one was sitting, right at the entrance to their prep area, so I asked the girl if it was available and I shifted to the table. I was sitting right in front of the place where all the servers congregated. But I had to ask for refills on my coffee. None of them looked in my direction unless I tried to find a moment when I could catch their eye as they conversed and lift up my cup to indicate it was empty. When my food came, the server remembered to offer Ketchup and Tobasco, but didn't notice that there wasn't any salt or pepper on my table; I had already helped myself to cream and sugar because that wasn't there either. So I'm guessing they don't usually seat anyone at that particular table. Here's the thing -- I was seated without being offered more than one option, I had to ask to change seats, I had to ask for coffee, I stopped eating halfway through my meal and waited for someone to notice I needed a to-go box, and when I had my debit card out, waiting to pay, a different server said "thank you for coming, have a nice day" and I had to tell her I hadn't paid yet. She said she'd look for my waitress but no one came for several minutes and she didn't give me a follow-up to say when anyone would come. Once I received the payment ticket, I thought about offering a tip, but I felt the tip wasn't earned and if I paid it, I would be rewarding the worst lackadaisical service I've received in a long time. And on my way out, my own server was at the door greeting a couple of older men who were entering, but she didn't pay any attention to my leaving and didn't say goodbye or thank you. This probably sounds like Whining to you. But greetings and coffee refills and frequent inquiries and quick notice when anything is needed, with thanks and goodbyes... these were things I had learned to expect. I acknowledge that all the servers were new, as far as I could tell. The tables are farther apart now. You don't hear other conversations. And there were a lot of patrons. But the way of serving has changed at Kalico Kitchen and not for the better. I may continue to patronize this restaurant, but I'm not sure it will be any time soon. read more

I was so excited to try this place and wanted so desperately to love it based on reviews and the fact that I love good breakfast joints. First, let me start with the positives, the staff is friendly, horrible at estimating wait times but friendly. They said it would be about a 15 min wait and said this to just about everyone that walked in and in reality it was more than 30 mins. A few people got annoyed by this, but when you have your smart phone really it goes by pretty fast. The fresh squeezed orange juice made in that nifty contraption is amazing! The best OJ I have ever had! I would go back just for a bottle of OJ, if they sold it by the bottle. The hashbrowns are delicious and the pancake is better than IHop! For the negatives now, it is small and the tables are packed together, I am pregnant and it was tough for me to sit with so little room and every time someone tried to walk by me I felt myself trying to smush into the table more. We ordered the half order of eggs benedict mine was half of the California sub turkey for bacon and my fiance ordered the half of the original benedict. As I said the hashbrowns were delicious and the home potatoes, but unfortunately both our eggs were terribly overcooked as you can see in the pictures, the yolk was hard and not runny at all like they should be for benedicts. This was probably the most disappointing part of the breakfast I hate it when my eggs are not cooked right! I mentioned this to our server but she didn't do anything about it or even offer an apology, generally, she was a good server, friendly and quick but I would have expected her to offer to have our dishes remade or something. When I let her know about the eggs all she said, "Was ok thanks for letting me know." What? Overall, I may go back if I preface with....please tell the cook not to overcook my eggs when I order, but not sure I will, I think I will keep hunting for that great breakfast spot in Spokane. So far I have been disappointed by the places that people have reviewed as the best, like Franks Diner...is a big No for me. read more

My husband and I came in around 2 pm because we had a Groupon that was about to expire. We were not expecting a great atmosphere (based on the reviews we read) and we got what we expected as far as that goes. The food was AWESOME. Seriously. I got a blue berry waffle and my husband ordered two pancakes, sausage, and eggs. I was a little nervous to try their $7 waffle because I thought that it was a little spendy for only getting 1 waffle, but it was a decent size AND it was one of the best waffles I have ever had. It literally melted in my mouth and the blue berries tasted very fresh. The milk was also amazing and washed it all down perfectly. My husband's pancakes were fluffy and light too. I think next time he will order a waffle since he tried a bite of mine and loved it as well. Okay, so there is a bad ending to this fairy tale experience. The service wasn't the best... okay, it wasn't even good. They close at 3pm so maybe our waitress was a little too eager to go home on time (since we were there after 2). She was very sweet and friendly (when she was around) but she forgot our drinks and we had to sit around and wait for our check. The other waiter ended up grabbing our drinks and telling our waitress we were ready for our check and we weren't even his table! I think if he was our waiter instead, we would have had much better service. By the way, the restaurant was not even THAT busy. Our waitress only had two other tables... So, I would like to go back sometime because I loved the waffle and I bet I will crave it in the future. Kalico Kitchen is a kitschy little place that is not fancy, seems like your grandparents' place. There are booths along the walls and lines of tables in the middle, on a busier morning you could be pretty cramped. The food is fantastic, comes as a large portion and is very reasonably priced. The fresh OJ is amazingly fresh and shouldn't be missed. The staff is always friendly and readily available. I've usually been immediately seated, or only had to wait momentarily. read more

We had a lovely experience here for breakfast. Friendly staff, fast, quick to refill your coffee, good prices, & yummy food- can't ask for much more than that! Hubs had the country fried steak, which he really enjoyed, but he especially liked the hash browns. They tasted like the potato had just be cut. I had the biscuits and gravy, which was also good! The biscuits were baked just right, soft with a little crisp on the outside. We spent $20 for the two of us. Delicious breakfast!! I no longer consume beef or pork (health reasons, you should try it!) so imagine my tremendous excitement when I saw they have a "California Benedict", made with shaved Turkey instead of ham. We decided to stop here for brunch on our way to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The other people I went with were Gonzaga students who had mentioned that this was the to-go spot for breakfast. I heard that it was a great place to go, and always crowded. When we went, it wasn't as crowded as usual and we were seated within 5 minutes. It was still busy though. We had called in earlier and we were able to make reservations for a party of 4. I decided to stick with a savory breakfast and ordered a Farmer Johns. It's basically a mix of chopped potatoes, fries, bacon and green peppers all topped with shredded cheddar cheese. I intentionally wanted the half size, but I had forgotten to mention that to the server. The full order was HUGE. Also, the meal came with 4 slices of toast. I was only able to eat 1/3 of my food so I had to bring back the rest. Only made it halfway with the toast. It was delicious though, and very affordable. Great food, great prices, and excellent service! Worth coming back if I happen to be in town again. read more

Awesome breakfast place. Great atmosphere and good food. Had the California eggs Benedict and they were tasty. My roommates got the country Benedict and they loved it too. Service was quick and super enjoyable. Love the restaurant vibe the most. Definitely worth the Sunday breakfast. Does get relatively busy so I would recommend avoiding the classic breakfast/brunch/church rush but it wasn't horrible.
