I was in Spokane for a Federal test and was determined to not eat at a chain location while in town. On my way North through town, I saw the Kalico Kitchen, which looked like just the ticket, so I pulled in. First I noticed the lot is pretty small...this proved arduous later, when I had to make a nine point U-turn to get back to the street. Just a minor note. Inside the joint, it's set up like a diner. Booths around the perimeter and tables in the middle. A very nice young lady greeted me almost immediately and pointed me to a table, which was really half-booth, half table, but as it was in the aisle, it would really only fit one person, or two very good friends that enjoyed each other's body warmth. The menu is your basic American diner food. They do lunch and breakfast, but I was there for breakfast, which looked more right in line with what they would probably do best. They have an "early bird special" menu, even for the morning, and so I ordered off that. Two eggs, sausage or bacon (I chose one sausage patty, versus the bacon or two sausage links), hash-browns, and toast. I notice now that some reviewers noted slow service, but this was a Tuesday morning, the place was very, very full, and I was served almost immediately. My food came out quickly as well and was very hot and exactly what I ordered, with my sausage on a separate plate, which I appreciated, as it kept grease out of my potatoes. Which, by the way, were AMAZING. Hash browns can go either way, but these were done perfectly. They had a distinct taste, were fried nicely on both sides, very, very crisp, and held together nicely. I can take or leave hash browns usually, but I ate all of these. The eggs were standard scrambled, but very good, and the toast was, well, toasted. I drink soda at breakfast (raised in the South and all), and as soon as my first one was drained, the waiter immediately went off to get me another one. However! The hostess who seated me noticed that it was empty from across the room, and brought me out one first. Then my waiter returned with a refill that he had prepared, saw I had one, looked around, then shrugged and gave me that one too. Refills were free, but I thought that, aside from being slightly humorous, it appeared that the staff helped each other to keep the customers happy. This did look to be somewhat of a local hang-out for the older set in the morning. I noticed that several tables had people getting up and wandering from booth to booth to converse, the wait staff seemed to know a lot of people's names who were customers, and there was a pretty relaxed atmosphere. Maybe that's what contributes to long wait times to get in and eat, but personally, I'd rather go to a restaurant that cares about their patrons, than one that just tries to shove people out the door with as big a bill as possible The price was reasonable, the food was very good, and the location was convenient. I would definitely be happy to come back here the next time I'm in Spokane. Oh, and on a parting note, as I walked out, I saw a big Yelp! sticker on the front door. First time in and the very first thing I noticed was how clean everything is. The next two things of more were that my pancakes did not fall apart under the lake of syrup I like to use, also the ketchup was not watery it was very thick. It was 100% natural and no high fructose corn syrup. I don't really care about that but it was nice and thick which is not something that I normally think about. We were once again traveling through Spokane for a nice weekend to visit my husbands son and kids then later a trip into Idaho to visit my son and daughter in law. After a nice sleep in our hotel, I decided to Google restaurants that serve breakfast on Division Street. Kalico Kitchen came up as one. I read some of the reviews and hubby and I decided we would call his son and have him and his 2 kids meet us there. Mind you.....we made NO MISTAKE doing so. I am not a breakfast eater, but my husband is. He ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of bacon. He was very pleased. To my delight, they do make egg white omelets! I was so happy, no joke I don't like yolks!! I ordered the veggie and cheese omelet it came with a variety of selections for sides. I chose the hashbrowns which were very good and asked them to hold the toast. One grandson had pumpkin pie waffles...I watched him take the first bit, and then it seemed I looked again and the waffles were gone! He said they were very good. Derek, our server, checked on us several times, the coffee cup was always filled. Our breakfast was perfect!! Derek also had a great sense of humor. It added a lot to our experience!! We had to wait a short time for a table, but it was well worth the wait! Complete breakfast with drinks and a couple sides for 5 with tax came to 53.32. Oh......don't forget to ask for a sample of the homemade ketchup!! 5 people for breakfast and 10 thumbs up!!!! When we return to Spokane we certainly will be coming back. read more

What a wonderful hidden gem, at least for me. Even though it has been there a long time and i drove past it many times, this was the first time I had eaten there. We had a large group on a Sunday morning and we were seated in a reasonable amount of time given the place was packed. The staff was very attentive and efficient. The wait time after ordering seemed a bit long but then again we were a large group and every table was occupied. When our food came it was hot and prepared as ordered. Everyone was pleased with their order and with the value. I had the chicken fried steak and must say it was one of the best I have eaten if not the best. The outside was crispy and the inside was juicy. The flavor was great and not too peppery which some tend to be. The steak was covered with plenty of delicious gravy. The order comes with a large selection of sides. I chose hash browns over pancake, waffles, fruit, etc. Others had french toast, breakfast tacos and biscuit and gravy. All enjoyed there meals. A study of the Kalico Kitchen and its predecessor, the Monroe Street Grill, should be mandatory for students in a restaurant management class. The Grill appeared to have a huge amount of money spent on the remodel, but with one cook and one waitress serving that huge space, along with other mistakes like 2 strips of bacon being a full order, it didn't last long. When it became Kalico Kitchen, I couldn't believe my eyes when I found just one empty parking spot and one empty seat in the restaurant. The turnaround was amazing and immediate. Normally one of our favorite spots - not sure if it was an off day or change in the kitchen but the food wasn't as mind blowing as usual. It was good but not awesome. It seems portion sizes seemed smaller too. Coffee and soda stayed full. Orange juice was just meh today but it's fresh squeezed so crappy oranges give crappy juice. Slightly better than average. Customer service was wonderful! Everyone was very friendly toward my three young children. Food portions were okay. The flavor is a bit bland but they do have a good size shelf filled with a large variety of spicy sauces. Nothing home made or super special though (for sauces). Came here for brunch on Sunday with four friends. We had to wait about 20 minutes, which was not too bad considering how busy they were and that it is a fairly small space. Everything is very reasonably priced and portions are right on! They also have the option on all of their benedicts and omelets to get smaller portions (i.e. one english muffin instead of two for the benedicts, and a 2 egg omelet instead of a 3). The food isn't AMAZING or anything; it's typical diner food, but they are doing it well, and their staff is extremely friendly. Lots of Gonzaga students come here on the weekends. I ordered the mushroom and spinach 2 egg omelet with sourdough toast and extra crispy hash browns. YUM! it was exactly what I wanted and I was full but didn't hate myself after I finished the whole thing haha. It is nice though because when you order an omelet you get the choice of having it come with pancakes, a think a waffle, or the hash browns & toast. So you can get your sweet AND savory breakfast all in one. Coffee was decent and was refilled often. I asked for half and half instead of the weird creamer on the table, and they were happy to accommodate. What a great breakfast! The restaurant was very very clean. Sugar, salt, and pepper containers were spotless as well as the menus. The staff was very attentive, friendly, and courteous. Host was very friendly. However they need a new cook or a new food runner who quality checks their food. Was served black toast and raw but covered in oil hash browns today. Waitress didn't notice and never came back to check on our meal and was no where to be found. so I watched my partner eat their entire meal (which they loved, egg tacos!) and then they asked if I needed a box. Still charged me for the full meal on the ticket even though I didn't eat one bite and never apologized but did bring me toast that wasn't black. So I took the meal home I guess I spent $40 plus a 20% tip to cook my own food at home. read more

They have amazing coffee, and hook you up with plenty of cream/sugar the works so you dont have to keep bugging your waiter for more. Their breakfasts are my two favorite qualities of food: cheap and delicious. I always get egg tacos and you choose if you want bacon/ ham/ or sausage in the them. They are huge and filling and sooo good. My love floats away to philly cheese steak sandwich heaven every time we eat there, he claims they are also simply to die for. And their waffles/french toast far exceed your typical dennys/ihop breakfast. After a late night, you can count on seeing me in the same clothing as the night before at Kalico scarfing my face.
