Honestly with I could do half stars because I'd give it a 4 and half stars I ordered the bacon, avocado and cheese omelette with hash browns and toast. I was pleasantly surprised to have this thing packed with the goods typically restaurants skimp on that kind of stuff but not here! The plate itself was huge portions which is something I love about old style diners. I also am on the hunt for a good cinnamon roll which I decided to get. I must say good work because that's a legit cinnamon roll it's got great flavor and buttery. My husband got the chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy. He said everything was as expected, good food but the gravy was standard nothing special. I also give them some credit considering how busy they are.. they can't specialize in everything. The wait on a Saturday morning was only about five minutes, which I think is awesome for a popular spot like this!! The food and coffee was good. Nothing spectacular. The waitress was sweet and attentive, but very busy. The decor is a little dated and dusty, but still charming. Three stars because the prices are a little excessive for what you get -- portion-wise, it's great, but it's just basic. Nothing gourmet/super unique, and breakfast for both my husband and I cost about $35. I think the coffee alone was like $2.99 for a cup. For basic diner fare, that seems steep. read more

Ventured out for breakfast to Kalico's new location on Monroe Street. The building itself was a "Shari's" at one time. Kalico's new location is nearly twice as big as the former location. It was bustling with diners during our breakfast visit. The service was pleasant enough, though the wait staff struggled with the requirements of a full house, with the manager loudly offering instructions. I ordered the "Hungry Man" breakfast. The fare was comparable to any restaurant of it's ilk, barring the waffle, which was served cold (see photo). Big Minus - The butter, even after being spread over the waffle, never melted. It was halfway through the meal before I could flag down a server to get syrup. Big Plus - The syrup was in it's own jug, not a tiny metal cup. Based solely on the size of the breakfast crowd, it seemed like a popular spot. The meal and service were passable, but not worth a second visit. read more

Just typical diner food. It wasn't especially good or bad but if you have a big party, there's something for everyone. The servers were nice and everyone's food looked good, but they brought me the wrong order. I was given what I think was a scramble when the order I placed was for an omelet. However, the "scramble" was more of a mound of potatoes with cheese on top with maybe one egg. Pretty disappointing since everyone else's food was better prepared. They were busy so I didn't ask for any accommodation. It's not something that would prevent me from coming back, but it is something for staff and patrons to be aware of. read more

Food is alright. The most recent time my husband and I came in, we weren't given the best service.. (mind you, they weren't that busy, when we went in) the waitress forgot my husbands iced coffee several times. He had to ask for it about 3 times before it was even brought to him.. we were seated next to a larger family. Our waitress seemed to pay much more attention to them and just kept walking by our table. When we were clearly out of water/coffee. We sat and waited for to go boxes for about half an hour.. as our waitress continued to just keep walking by... not bothering to ask if we needed anything.. it seemed like after my husband had asked for his coffee, is when they didn't care to serve us anymore! We had a great time and filled our bellies to the brim! Such great portion sizes for low prices! They are a great mom and pop type place! The food was plentiful and affordable. I recommend Kalico if you are super hungry and no nonsense about your breakfast needs! I would rather take a little hit on price and portion to get a win on flavor, so the biscuits and gravy here didn't do it for me. However, there were some very good hashbrowns to be had, and the coffee was FLOWING. We went with a larger group and I think the restaurant handles smaller groups more comfortably, although the wait staff was very nice about getting us all at a table together. The enthusiasm and abundance of Gonzaga swag decor was fun for me as a GU fan, but if you don't root for the Zags you might not appreciate the ambiance. Overall Kalico is a total Spokane classic, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit here unless you are a hungry Gonzaga fan. What a nice little surprise! A very cozy open little restaurant with multiple Booth tables and great for groups. The breakfast was amazing and I'm so glad that we split the Dayton breakfast because it was too much for one person. The staff was super friendly very accommodating and the breakfast came out hot & fast! The only downfall of this place is the water. You can really taste the city in the water in the coffee wasn't very strong. I guess I could have went to Dutch Bros if I wanted coffee haha. Anyway, please come check out this quaint little place where the atmosphere is full of folks ranging from 18 to 85! I will definitely be back. Driving by, we decided to stop in on a late Sunday morning. We could see people waiting for tables outside, and we decided to wait 25 minutes for a table. We were seated exactly then. We ordered our food and a few minutes later our plates arrived. I have never had chicken fried steak that was this delicious! The hash browns are perfectly crispy and yummy. Our eggs were done just as we had ordered, the atmosphere is a lively and friendly mix of people. I could not imagine a better place to have Sunday brunch. It seems the restaurant is managed very well, and waitstaff are friendly. I give Kalico Kitchen an A+ and will be back next time I travel to Spokane. read more

I was in Spokane for a Federal test and was determined to not eat at a chain location while in town. On my way North through town, I saw the Kalico Kitchen, which looked like just the ticket, so I pulled in. First I noticed the lot is pretty small...this proved arduous later, when I had to make a nine point U-turn to get back to the street. Just a minor note. Inside the joint, it's set up like a diner. Booths around the perimeter and tables in the middle. A very nice young lady greeted me almost immediately and pointed me to a table, which was really half-booth, half table, but as it was in the aisle, it would really only fit one person, or two very good friends that enjoyed each other's body warmth. The menu is your basic American diner food. They do lunch and breakfast, but I was there for breakfast, which looked more right in line with what they would probably do best. They have an "early bird special" menu, even for the morning, and so I ordered off that. Two eggs, sausage or bacon (I chose one sausage patty, versus the bacon or two sausage links), hash-browns, and toast. I notice now that some reviewers noted slow service, but this was a Tuesday morning, the place was very, very full, and I was served almost immediately. My food came out quickly as well and was very hot and exactly what I ordered, with my sausage on a separate plate, which I appreciated, as it kept grease out of my potatoes. Which, by the way, were AMAZING. Hash browns can go either way, but these were done perfectly. They had a distinct taste, were fried nicely on both sides, very, very crisp, and held together nicely. I can take or leave hash browns usually, but I ate all of these. The eggs were standard scrambled, but very good, and the toast was, well, toasted. I drink soda at breakfast (raised in the South and all), and as soon as my first one was drained, the waiter immediately went off to get me another one. However! The hostess who seated me noticed that it was empty from across the room, and brought me out one first. Then my waiter returned with a refill that he had prepared, saw I had one, looked around, then shrugged and gave me that one too. Refills were free, but I thought that, aside from being slightly humorous, it appeared that the staff helped each other to keep the customers happy. This did look to be somewhat of a local hang-out for the older set in the morning. I noticed that several tables had people getting up and wandering from booth to booth to converse, the wait staff seemed to know a lot of people's names who were customers, and there was a pretty relaxed atmosphere. Maybe that's what contributes to long wait times to get in and eat, but personally, I'd rather go to a restaurant that cares about their patrons, than one that just tries to shove people out the door with as big a bill as possible The price was reasonable, the food was very good, and the location was convenient. I would definitely be happy to come back here the next time I'm in Spokane. Oh, and on a parting note, as I walked out, I saw a big Yelp! sticker on the front door.
