"Garden Burger" (Impossible patty) burger with the fries & salad upgrade, and vinaigrette.
Stephanie C.

Full disclosure, I'm a vegetarian with an egg allergy, so I came here with coworkers who were craving old fashioned burgers, and Kal's apparently delivers on that well. For the plant-based folks, Kal's "Garden Burger" on the menu is actually an Impossible patty (or at least was when I went). They grill it on the same grill as everything else, so if cross-contamination is a big deal for you, you're SOL here, but the nice thing is that they don't add anything else to the burger--you do that yourself to the right of the register & pick-up area for lettuce/toppings and then behind you for ketchup and mustard (press ALL the way down on those pumps), next to what probably used to be a salad bar (but is now not used). No accidental mayo-drowned burger here! If you want cheese, you add it when you order and I believe they'll apply it at the grill. It's a pretty straightforward burger, and I suspect that is part of the old fashioned charm of their animal meat burgers as well, being unfussy and not complicated with spices/flavorings. The salad is pretty standard, but they didn't have a vinaigrette ready to go--I asked and the lady at the register kindly went into the back and pulled out a bottle of balsamic vinaigrette for me to apply to my salad, and I was grateful since I think all of the dressings they had ready to go in little cups had egg in them (and I'm allergic). Thankfully it has little bits of carrot and red cabbage to brighten it up, because like most BBQ places, the food is aggressively beige & brown, LOL. The fries are a good thickness (not shoestring, but not wedges) and have a good crisp to the outside, but come unsalted. Overall, the sole vegetarian meal option (unless you count a grilled cheese sandwich) is a solid 3-star meal. The place itself is deliberately dated, and has the grill right there by the entrance. There's a TV in the corner with closed captioning. The parking lot is full of large trucks with immaculate truck beds, but the spaces seem wide enough to accommodate them. Vegetarians and vegans pretty much know to expect disrespect when entering a BBQ establishment, but the lady at the register didn't bat an eye when I asked about the garden burger listed on the menu (was asking if it was made with egg) and answered my other questions with no fuss at all. And she went in the back and found the vinaigrette for me when I was worried about the salad dressings, as well! Neither she nor the grill cook rolled eyes or sneered or scoffed at my order. I was treated like a human being in spite of being a vegetarian at a BBQ joint, and for that, they get a WHOLE extra star. Given my dietary restrictions, I don't think I will be back on my own, but knowing what I do now, I would not be opposed to coming back if I am with a group with a hankering for old fashioned burgers and/or BBQ. Kindest BBQ place, for sure!

Pulled Kal 's Bar - B - Q Pork, (regular bun) + Potato Salad

I really wanted to like this place. I heard good things... and I tried it before and it was "ok." My ex brought me a sandwich from here a year or so ago and it was pretty good. Simple, plain, but a good slab of meat. Flavor was decent and the portion was wonderful. I came back with my work group about a week or so ago and left just so disappointed. While the service was great-- they were friendly and quick.... The food itself just didn't hold up its own side of the bargain. I spent $25 on a small, flavorless and chewy pulled pork sandwich with a child-sized side of potato salad and a drink. I left still hungry, and a bit confused about what I had just eaten. Ill put it this way... BBQ is supposed to have flavor. Zest. Maybe some heat. (All on its own). But this is so far from that. If you want flavor you have to add BBQ sauce-- which at this establishment is nothing more than Heinz. Such a bummer.

Ribeye steak sandwich and fries

This is my second visit here, after years of driving by when I worked nearby; the parking lot was always packed! Now that WFH is so prevalent, I guess, they're not as busy at lunchtime. Last time I got a grilled cheese, which was fantastic - very old school and perfect. Nowadays places are often trying to "improve" a classic by making it three-cheese, four-cheese, five-cheese, and while those can be good, they're not necessarily "better." What I got was exactly what I wanted and very reasonably priced. This time I wanted some steak and went for the ribeye steak sandwich. It, too, was classic, simple and perfect. The steak was so tender I was able to cut it in half with a butter knife! All the condiments and fixings are separate, serve-yourself, so I didn't have to spend time peeling off things I don't like, such as raw onion or limp lettuce. The inside is all wood and rustic decor, but it's clean and comfortable, and the staff (owners, I believe) are very friendly and helpful. There was a miscommunication between me and the cashier but they didn't fuss and just made it right, which I appreciated. I should have asked for a receipt and I would have seen the error before having food in front of me and wanting to dive in! Definitely becoming a go-to spot for me when I'm in the area and wanting comfort food!

Fish Sandwich

2/16/2023 Kal's Barbecue 425 N Mathilda Ave Sunnyvale, CA 94085 The Wifey and I went here for lunch on a Thursday. There is parking around the building. It's a clean diner setup, the menu is on the billboard, you order and pay at the front counter and I was called to pick up our order at the front counter. There is a well stocked condiment station with tomato, onion, various pickles and etc. My Fish Sandwich consisted of two breaded fish fillets (frozen) which I topped with tomato and onion slices. I expected a fresh filet, battered and freshly deep fried; so it was disappointing and I wouldn't order again. Her steak sandwich was pretty good with a strong smoky charcoal flavor. The steak was on the thin side with lots of Rib Eye fat, which I like. Although my fish sandwich was just okay, I liked the steak sandwich (pricey) and there are other barbecue offerings I'd like to try so it's repeatable.

Great country style breakfast, friendly staff and very clean restaurant to dine with good prices

Watery sugary sweet coleslaw
Vivi B.

Extremely disappointed. Fryer is broken. Only sweet coleslaw or potato salad with burger. The meat was chewy and tasted old. It looked kind of grey. The condiments are left out- a bowl of mayo on top of ice. They ran out of barbecue pulled pork they were smoking outside. So I opted for the baseline burger, but then the fryer is broken so no fries. The one slice of American cheese coagulated on the corner of the bun. Chairs are old and torn. The place looks tired. The steak sandwich had so much fat it was inedible.

Kal's Steak and Eggs...mission accomplished

Nothing 'foodie' or 'chefie' about it. Order at the counter and wait bit. Pick up your food. Sit. Eat. That's what I did for this visit and rare follow-up review. This time by passing the burgers and getting something that I have wanted to do for a long time. Kal's Steak and Eggs For about thirty and some change you get a plate of lightly buttered toast, unremarkable hash brown potatoes and eggs cooked to order. Sunny side up of course and rib eye grilled medium. Mine wasn't of the choicest cuts almost resembling a chuck steak but still good. Not much has changed since my last visit except for the plexiglass at the counter and the condiment bar residing in the same space between the register and the fountain. The coffee pots looked inviting but skipped that since I already caffienated earlier that morning. The trolley that use to have the condiments sits abandoned save for the ketchup and mustard stand right next to it. And yes you can get your slices of tomato and some peppers to go along with your steak and eggs. So just a nice late breakfast/lunch on a lazy weekend.

The food was horrible. Worst bbq food I've ever had. Super expensive. It was filthy. Not recommend.

If their TGTG can be this delicious, their normal food must be even better. Would be happy to come back another time to try other things! Pulled pork wasn't dry and was smoky, chicken wasn't dry. Their BBQ sauce was a good mix of sweet and salty. Cole slaw, potato salad, beans, and corn muffin were delicious! No complaints at all. I stopped by this restaurant during a business trip to relive out my childhood. Nothing about this place has changed, in a good way! Let's break it down Service You order your food at the front, but can also have someone come to your table and order. Everyone is nice and welcoming, and will help you order if you feel overwhelmed by the amount of choices. Ambiance It looks and feels like your neighborhood bbq restaurant, with matching music chairs and tablecloths. They have light rock or country playing in the background and it's not too loud in there. I went during lunch time and there were guests sprinkled about the tables. Food The food was amazing! It was cooked to perfection, and you can choose from many bbq sauces available. I ended up getting the pork beef and chicken, with corn bread and potato salad. Their potato salad was to die for! The only thing that I guess I was shocked by was the price. My meal came out to around 6 dollars after tip, and I thought it would be closer to 30. All in all, I give this spot a 4/5 would recommend!

I've been to 3 others Redwood City BBQ, South Winchester BBQ (San Jose), and Canyon's BBQ (Castro Valley) and I've reviewed most of those quite favorably, except for 1. But they have about 4 others that I haven't been but are on my list. I guess now I'll know they are more the same than they are different. I knew walking in that I was going to like it. A strong aroma of wood smoke hugs you upon entering. A cool mural outside, lots of beers and bbq on the tables, cool tunes that was all over the place genre wise. 2 Meat Combo ($26/4.5*) Crazy solid combo. Not as juicy as I would prefer but between the perfect smoke content and their seasoning just makes me happy enough. Brisket: Their brisket is awesome. Not as juicy as some of the top notch places here in the Bay, but the flavor was perfect for me. Assertive smokiness without being overbearing. Get a piece with a good layer of fat and it was basically hearty beef bacon. I rarely put sauce on brisket but theirs is not bad, maybe just a dot or 2. Ribs: Also drier than what I like but the flavor and meaty texture was enough for me. Definitely have to pull these off the bone a bit, does not easily fall off, which I actually prefer. I like toothsome versus mushy meat. These ribs do have a layer of bbq sauce cooked into them, so it has a sweet and tangy flavor already in it. But they still can accept extra sauce, as it will not only moisten the ribs further but it will amp up the tang and sweetness that pork ribs are natural for. Tried 2 sides, beans and coleslaw. The beans aren't the super sweet kind, which I liked. More chili-like very hearty and complimenting to the smoky bbq. The slaw was perfect, crisp with a creamy yet slightly sweet dressing. Crazy good, I could actually eat their sides alone as a meal. Their corn bread here is strange. It is cooked in a sheetpan and cut into squares much like a brownie. But that square is then griddled til golden brown so I totally thought it was garlic bread at first. The other bbq spots I tried from this same company didn't make corn bread like that, so this was a first for me. Probably the only miss for me here. Also tried a half pound of Tri Tip ($20/4*) Very meaty that they were able to keep it a nice pink medium, which I like. But much milder in smoke than their brisket and ribs. I ended up making sandwiches with these at home. They are sliced pretty thick so you may have to slice some of them further. It bites easier in thinner slices versus monster thick slices that will pull out of the bread with each bite. I learned that on this out so just throwing out a tip. A solid bbq throwdown with a cold frosty one, plus lots of leftovers for work lunches the next few days, is just an out I can repeat over and over. Glad I found this spot!

You have to enter how many people and desired date and time online but how do you even know what's available? They have every day and time slot listed. Mine auto rejected via email response a few minutes after submission but it's like a guessing game because you still don't know what's available. I had to eventually call them and they had the entire hour free that I was looking into. The nice thing is when I did show up, I didn't have to wait. I didn't like how nothing was explained to us and the waitress was not very patient, nice, or seemed to like her job, you know, the opposite of what a waiter should be. I was asking her what some of the banchan was and she was irritated or made me feel uncomfortable asking. When the food came I wanted to get some photos of the food but also of the person's birthday we were celebrating. Again, the waitress got irritated. After the photos we didn't realize that they cook your food, again, no one told us. The waitress sprinted to our table and pulled off all the pieces of meat we placed on the grill and scolded us...awkward. I am not sure if you're meant to eat one protein all at once. I've eaten my fair share of KBBQ and Korean food...I've never heard this rule. But I prefer to eat different proteins not just one who order of tongue, then jowl, then short rib...when I asked her to only cook some of the jowl, she got upset again. I'm paying for the food, why am I not allowed to choose what order or how much to eat? She didn't even ask which meat we wanted to eat and would pick for us. Some of the meat was over cooked because she went to another table to cook too long or some were under cooked due to wanting to rush us to the next portion. The food itself was very good. The seasoning and adding onions on it tasted good. No explanation of pink salt and normal salt as your only "sauces" so I was confused there. The tofu soup we ordered came out extremely late and I was already full. There were also a lot of bell peppers in there which I'm not used to and didn't love. I'm bummed that she left the short rib last because that tasted the best but I had no room left in my stomach. Again, wishing I was able to eat different proteins not just one at a time... Honestly not sure if I'd come back. It doesn't make for easy conversation either to have someone come to your table mid conversation every few seconds but also be passive aggressive towards you.

The location that we went to is located next to Maggiano's Little Italy in Santana Row on Olin Ave. There is a free 2 hour parking structure across of the restaurant where my boyfriend and I parked at. We came during their Lunch Specials (until 4pm) and Happy Hour (from 3-5:30pm) which worked perfectly as we wanted something smaller in portion compared to the dinner portions. We started off with drinks. I got their Pig Ol' Bitties Blonde Ale, and my boyfriend got their Friday Beer & Shot special of This Little Piggy Went to [Mark]et with a 16 oz Dirty Little Pig IPA and a shot of Benchmark whiskey. My fault for having him get a whiskey shot on an empty stomach, though HAHA. He did like how smooth the whiskey was at least! We shared a 2-meat BBQ Lunch Combo Plate, and honestly, we should have gotten 3 meats because of how tender and delicious everything was! We got their Tri Tip and Sliced Brisket with their Garlic Mash and server recommended Sweet Potato Tots. Ahhh, everything was so good! Aside from the tender, flavorful meats, the two sides, especially the garlic mash, were sooooo good. We both loved everything! It was definitely a great choice coming during lunch as we were quite full after ordering one of their happy hour shareables of Chips & Queso (kind of pricey even for happy hour in my opinion for chips and cheese). Honestly wished we got their Chili Cheese Fries or their other fries which were the same price than just chips and dip LOL. But it was a good hold over food with us drinking a bit (at least for me). Shoutout to the only server who was working on a late Friday afternoon as she was doing her best to accommodate everyone + trying to clean up the previous tables. It was kind of sad seeing that the other workers didn't help bus the tables in my opinion. Overall, a great place to watch sports and have some good whiskey as this restaurant is known for their whiskey selections!
