This is my go to sushi place in the Springfield area. I think they're Korean owned so they have a lot of things on the menu a typical Japanese sushi place wouldn't. The fish here is always so fresh and their portions sizes are great. This is a quiet and casual place located in the same building as the Noodle Co. The food usually takes a little longer to come out because everything is so perfectly made so I do recommend getting appetizers if you order a lot of sushi. My favorite is the Esther roll. Perfect combination of con-caution fresh fish and avocado. You also have to try the magical green tea that they give you free if you check in on Yelp. I don't write many reviews, but Kana sushi deserves one! I've tried a ton of sushi places and Kana is definitely in my top 3. My orders are always ready on time (if not earlier) and the sushi is so fresh!! I haven't tried anything that I don't like from here. The Love Letter Roll is my favorite though. 10/10 recommend. Ambience is severely lacking, it's just so bright. Drink selection is minimal. Sushi was a bit above average, there are just so many better sushi places in nova. This place is okay. If you go I advise you to stick to their specialty rolls and the sashimi. We had a special roll, the Crunch Munch, that was pretty good. Their sushi rice is very bland because they don't season it, so I wouldn't advise getting nigiri sushi. Also would not advise getting the uni here. Never in my life have I had to spit out food after I put it in my mouth! I have had mixed experiences with the service here. Sometimes they can make you feel rushed and are in general not very welcoming, other times it's normal. I think it depends on your server. read more

I went today with my friends and we were waiting for a table or somebody to tell us how long will be the waiting, the front lady was on the phone so we didn't went to ask we were waiting until she finish with the phone call, then my friend went to ask her to see if we can see the menu while we where waiting she screamed at him and said YOU HAVE TO WAIT UNTIM I TELL YOU WHEN YOU CAN SEAT, and rolled her eyes, then she answer another phone call and didn't tell us anything. About a 2-2.5: The hubs and I came to check out Kana Sushi out for dinner. This little Japanese restaurant took the place of what was once Toki Teriyaki; a Korean-owned place, the menu offers a variety of appetizers (yellowtail, gyoza, enoki bacon, garlic shrimp, etc.), soup, salads, sushi combos & platters, teriyaki, and daily lunch specials. We tried the Tuna Tataki (extremely large slices of seared tuna, topped with ponzu sauce and a side of horseradish cream; this was just okay in taste, but I did like the pickled sliced daikon radish it was sitting upon); Jalapeno Yellowtail (4 pieces of yellowtail with sliced scallions; it was stated that this would come with sliced jalapenos, but it was actually substituted with scallions; there was no sauce that came with); an order of gyoza (little fried beef dumplings that were filled with leeks; forget the dumpling sauce - these tasted better with regular soy sauce, and they were okay); Chicken Teriyaki (broiled boneless chicken breast, glazed with teriyaki sauce; the meat seemed to be sous-vide, and while it looked unappetizing, the taste was pretty okay - white breast was very soft, and the teriyaki glaze was actually pretty tasty); Kana Udon (udon noodles in a very clean light broth with a slightly overcooked poached egg; this came with 2 shrimp tempura, which were so crispy and tasty); Toro (at market price; these were quite disappointing, as it tasted like it was thawed recently, and not thawed completely); salmon skin roll (a little bland, it was topped with a teriyaki-like glaze); and, a spicy scallop roll (definitely on the spicier end, this was the best out of all the sushi that was ordered). We were also served complimentary Kana Salad (which was iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, and a strong chunky ginger dressing), as well as a bowl of miso soup with cubed tofu (a little watery). With a Yelp check-in, you get a cup of complimentary green tea (boiling hot, but soothing). Service was very friendly and sweet, and our dishes were always cleared right away. The prices were more on the steep side, and while the place was really cute, I am not sure if I'd come back here for the sushi. Oh my WOW!! I am beyond thrilled to welcome Kana Sushi to our humble Springfield neighborhood sushi joint list. With the new Springfield Town Center, quite a few restaurants have been moving into the area and I can officially say this is the BEST one. I'm a little bit of a sushi snob so trust me when I tell you, this place is a gem. It is located in the Springfield Plaza behind Noodles and Company, right off the mixing bowl. The service was attentive, excellent, and best of all warm (us NoVA people aren't always the warmest of the bunch). It is a relatively small, very clean, casual restaurant with just a few tables. The star of any sushi restaurant, for me, is the freshness of the fish. I was absolutely stunned by Kana's sashimi/nigiri. It is up there with the now famous places in DC we yelpers love so much. I'm quite sure another reviewer has already said this - but I have to reiterate - it is the best hamachi I've EVER had (and I'm from Hawaii where all the best fish comes from). The Uni tasted like it was fresh out of shell - fluffy, buttery. The fatty tuna was chu toro. Get the spicy scallop handroll - it sounds like everything you've had everywhere else, but it's better. I'm not a roll girl, but my husband loved his roll. The very best part?! The prices are very good for a sushi restaurant, especially for fatty tuna and uni. We also appreciated the chef's complimentary dish of nigiri with spicy scallop, deep fried with a jalapeño! My only recommendation is that the sake availability is very basic and I'd like a few more options to pair with the amazing fish. I really wanted to give this place a high rating, but I can't. First, let me go over my pedigree: 1. I live in SoCal 2. I have sushi every week, and usually try new places 3. I've been to Japan multiple times and know their customs, food and culture 4. I know what good sushi is suppose to be Unfortunately this just isn't it. I'm by no means an expert and am not a snob, but I know the difference between a good sushi restaurant and a bad one. I'm not rating this place just on the sushi, but the overall experience. I asked if they had Albacore. No. They don't serve it. It's one of the most popular fish out there, and they just don't serve it. I would say at least half of their rolls have salmon on it. They even have sushi rolls with MELTED CHEESE on it. While this might be a new take on sushi, it isn't authentic and hurts their credibility as a sushi restaurant. I ordered the Tuna Tataki Roll and Tuna nigiri. Tuna sushi - tasteless. I know it's not suppose to have a fishy taste, but it suppose to have taste. It didn't. And the quality was subpar as well. There were lines/strings in it. There's probably a name for it, but I had to tug it around in my mouth to help chew it. You know what I'm talking about, and it's not right. Rice was good, and the portion size was very fair. But their chef didn't get the best quality tuna. Tuna Tataki Roll is described as: In: asparagus, avocado, cucumber Out: seared tuna, scallion, tobiko, fried garlic, eel sauce The tuna on the outside was not seared, or at least, barely. Again, tasteless fish and stringy. And this was a $14 roll! Even my good places in California rarely charge this much for a roll, and this one was not that big. I too was given two pieces of sushi at the end of my meal. A sushi roll with melted cheese on it. Again, didn't have much taste, and melted cheese... I'd really like to see this place do well. And it was WAY too bright in there. Felt like fast food. Honestly, the owner needs to travel a bit outside the area and see how other sushi restaurants, maybe in California offer their food. We get Kana sushi quite often for takeout. We usually get a couple of special rolls and some salmon rolls or some katsu. In general, the rolls are pretty good, but occasionally, they put too much vinegar in their rice which throws off the balance. Their katsu is really good but depending on who answers the phone, you might have a hard time ordering it because they sometimes don't know it's on the menu. Here i am again, trying sushi from newly open places around my area. Luckily Kana did not disappoint. Kana is a small sushi joint in a strip mall owned by Koreans. It is conveniently located and offers decent fish. My family decided to dine in on a Thursday evening. One thing I noticed was many people placed to-go orders and picked it up rather then dining in. My family ordered various rolls and I ended up choosing the sushi and sashimi combo A which was priced at $22. The wait for the food was a bit long; however the waitress was kind enough to warn us and provided us complimentary edamame and a 4 pieces of sushi. My sushi and sashimi combo A came with 6 pieces of California roll, 3 pieces of salmon, tuna and some other sashimi and lastly surf clam, octopus, shrimp, crabmeat, salmon, and tuna nigiri. As I mentioned above, the quality of the fish is decent for the price. My father ended up going with the spicy tuna, salmon and California rolls which were just average. They weren't spicy at all so that was disappointing. The other rolls were standard and nothing that differentiates them from other sushi places. The customer service here was excellent, drinks were refilled quickly and due to the long wait time we received many complimentary items. I will be returning when a spontaneous craving of sushi arises. Although I will most likely be calling in and placing a to-go order as it seems like that's more time-friendly. Kana Sushi is a pleasant surprise and a the "new kid on the block" in Springfield Plaza. My sister and I were craving sushi and were running errands in the area. We decide to stop in and order some sushi to go. The staff was very friendly and immediately greeted us when we walked into the restaurant. They have a separate menu for sushi where you can choose how much of each sushi order you want as well as their regular menu. Kana's regular menu has typical items you would find in sushi restaurants ranging from soup, dumplings, and ramen. My sister and stuck to our gut and just ordered sushi. This is what we ordered: spicy tuna roll, yellowtail roll, and soft shell crab roll. While we waited. it gave me chance to observe the restaurant. It's a small space but they utilize their space well. They have seats by the sushi prep station so you can choose to sit there and watch the chefs craft your sushi. We also noticed that if you dine in and order sushi, you get salad and miso soup as well. Our sushi was ready in about 15 minutes. I loved how they packed everything and even included some greens in the box. The staff also gave us some miso soup on the house which was a great bonus. The sushi itself was well made and tasty. The fish tasted fresh and their rice was seasoned well. I also enjoyed the soft shell crab roll. Prices are reasonable as for sushi restaurants. Service was fine for take out and looked like it would be fine if we ate their too. I would definitely consider coming back for sushi. read more

This is my new go to sushi place close to home. Soooo good. It's their grand opening and they are open to customizing roles, so we added a bunch of different ingredients to our rolls. My favorite is the bora bora roll. Delicious. The fish is super fresh and the specialty roles are pretty unique. The chef is open to new roll ideas and I liked that. He even gave us a sample of a special roll not on the menu called an Esther roll named after one of the servers. It was good. It was a Wednesday night so it was very quiet and cozy. I really liked the ambiance (although they could dim the lights a little). The hostess and the server greeted us with a friendly smile and started a conversation with us which I thought was nice. My two-year old even liked them. I brought my two-year old picky eater there and he loved the chicken teriyaki with rice. He scarfed it down and finally joined the clean plate club. We ordered miso soup and the kana salad and they gave it to us complimentary. They even brought out a soup and rice plastic bowl/plate for my kid. I asked for milk for my kid and they even had that! Our server Esther even gave him a packet of fruit snacks for dessert. Overall the food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the ambiance was very nice and clean. This place is good. Im usually a picky eater, so giving a 4 starts means it is worth it. I order to go, but the service is still really nice and polite. I order a dragon roll and california roll. It is really goood. The food is fresh, unlike other places where it is already made and they just have to assemble it. The shrimp tempura was warm and the unagi is warm. Unlike yechon, (where they microwave the unagi, which makes it burn the tail off, making it hard at the end and the shrimp was not fried immediate) this place is not like that. The unagi is nice and the shrimp is warm and crispy. The avocado is frrsh and green. The bento box seem very cheap (like $10 for chicken teriyaki, including salad, miso soup, shrimp and vegetable tempura, rice and SIX piece california sushi) thats really cheap. (Compare to yechon, they only give you 1 piece california sushi) sadly.....theres no to go :( The place is really nice and clean, the asmoshphere is so calm and romantic. It would be a lovely place for couples. I will come back again. The only cons to this place is the price, but all sushi place is expensive. read more

First sushi place I've tried since moving to VA and it was a great experience! Staff is very welcoming from since you walk in the door, and checked in frequently while we were eating! Alert alert - the 4 and 5 star reviews are by reviewers who order things like Godzilla, volcano and California rolls and consider themselves sushi aficionados. I was warned by a couple of reviewers who did in fact mention this as well. But still, even if you cater to the basic of all basic folks who know nothing of sashimi, you must at least source from some decent places for the market prices being charged. You can find solid sushi in strip malls (see my review of Takohachi) however this is probably because they are Japanese owned, something I previously would not judge an establishment about. These guys should just get rid of things that they can't deliver on. Do not have mediocre hotate, uni, ikura on the menu. Nice ambiance, nice service but I couldn't even force myself to eat the uni or ikura and the salmon belly was chewy AF which is wrong on all levels. Smh. I would give one star but I have to recognize this place will and does deliver to folks who are basic af and enjoy consumption of cooked rolls with sauces galore. But 4.5 stars is absolutely ridiculous. Should be at 4 which is along the lines of all other suburbs sushi places. You've got legit places like Takumi and Tachibana rated same as this place. I've seen this restaurant every time take the Springfield exit. So I finally went in yesterday to try their sushi. Atmosphere is very nice. Space is decent. They greeted me right away as I entered the restaurant. I browsed their menu and their sushi menu. They seem to have a good amount of variety with their sushi. I decided to get two orders of California roll for my parents and Sake Don for myself to-go. The California Roll was delightful. Had a good amount of crabmeat and avocado. They only put a sliver of cucumber which I love. The Sake Don is a bowl of salmon sashimi with more than a cup of sushi rice. I'm a salmon lover and they're salmon tasted quite fresh. It's pricey but it's worth it for the quality of their seafood. I'm glad I finally stopped by. I'm definitely will be coming back here again. :) read more

I had been traveling for three hours and really was just looking for somewhere to freshen up and grab a light bite; however, the reviews don't lie: this place is great! I ordered gyoza for an appetizer. One out of the four was a tad soggy but aside from that perfectly crisp and delicious. We then received miso soup on the house.My companion ordered a bora bora roll-and tad bland for me but she poured gyoza sauce over it and loved it. The love letter roll (shrimp tempura, cucumber, seared salmon, crunch flake, and "chef's special sauce") was amazing. But the biggest and best surprise was the sushi they gave us on the house. The waitress "can't recall" what it was exactly, but it had a wonderful smoky sauce and array of different flavors as you worked your way through and a little punch. Sushi is really good here with nice presentation. Service is fast but they can be a bit neglectful at times. Ordered seaweed salad, miso soup, house salad & agedashi tofu as appetizers. Seaweed salad is a little on the small portion size but still good since they include shredded imitation crab. Miso soup is just your average miso soup. House salad's dressing isn't as good as other sushi places - more on the bland/watery side. Def pass on the agedashi tofu - we've had better elsewhere. Main meal: 2 California B rolls, caterpillar roll, dynamite roll, beef yakisoba & spicy tuna roll. California rolls are good but need more than just a sliver of cucumber to add more texture. Caterpillar roll tastes good but again, only gave us a thin sliver of eel inside. Dynamite roll is delicious with the creamy sauce - don't remember if it was supposed to be spicy or not, but it's not spicy at all. Still delicious though. Beef yakisoba is also tasty though the portion is on the smaller side as well. Don't order it alone as a meal if you're a man who can eat like my husband. Spicy tuna roll was the best for me.
