When we discovered that the ramen establishment near our house (Yido) was closed on Tuesday, we decided to give Taiko a shot. We are glad we did, and we definitely will come back. Service was friendly and completely on point. You gotta love a restaurant when the moment you've drained your ice water, your server is immediately there with a refill. Taiko has a huge menu, pretty much catering to anything you might hanker. I noticed that in addition to traditional Japanese fare, there were Chinese and Thai dishes as well. For starters we went with the shumai, miso soup and harumaki. The shumai was very good, though I'm a little less certain about the vinegary dipping sauce that came with the shumai. The miso soup was good and we liked the finely diced tofu in it. Harumaki are crispy spring rolls, and we liked these too. We also ordered an eel roll. It had been broiled and with the sauce on it was very tasty. JP's entrée was the Pork Katsu bento box. The pork katsu was excellent and so were the California rolls that came with the box. The bento box also came with miso soup and a side salad. My entrée was the Beef Udon. Very attractively presented, it had a smoky flavor and was packed with beef along with bits of asparagus and zucchini. It was pretty good. We were pleasantly surprised at the end of our meal to receive complementary scoops of a delicious vanilla ice cream. We ordered delivery from Taiko and it was very disappointing. The nigiri and rolls are both huge - you need to take several bites. They are cut inconsistently - some small pieces and some big pieces. The shrimp tempura had lettuce in it. I've never seen that before. And the slices were so big they fell apart when you tried to eat them. We were looking for a place to post celebrate lunar new year that also included vegetarian dishes. I found this spot since I personally was craving sushi and the prices caught my eye. I asked myself: "Is it really that affordable? AND their lunch specials happen on Saturdays too?!" Yes and YES! The lady serving was was very hospitable and checked on us every so often making sure we had everything we needed. The interior was clean and the decor was nice. We ordered steak hibachi and salmon lunch special. The steak hibachi plate was delicious: came with clear soup, salad, and sautéed veggies and fried rice with the medium steak (as requested). The salmon lunch special was also a generous sized piece of salmon. I enjoyed the miso soup and the house salad too. The house salad dressing was perfect and the soup was not too salty and was the optimal temperature. Best of all, we ordered a salmon roll and the salmon was so fresh. Again, super generous with their portions of fish! We ended with a fried ice cream. In probably wouldn't get it again since the ice cream scoop was much smaller than expected, but it was nice to try. We came here on a Saturday afternoon and were quickly seated. The restaurant has plenty of seating and is easy to find. I was very impressed with the portions of sashimi which were very thick and generous. All of the food, including the sushi was very good - specifically loved the capital roll. Taiko is by far the best sushi restaurant I have been to in Northern VA. The service was beyond top notch and the sushi was incredible. I got Fatty Tuna, Fatty Salmon, spicy tuna rolls, eel, pork katsu and rock shrimp. Every piece was amazing and I will be back. The aesthetic and ambiance was very nice. Love the cherry blossom them and their attention to detail. Like out each dish had a unique plate. At the end we had an incredible desert that had two different mochis, Japanese cheesecake and a sort of coffee tiramisu cake. Each dessert was delicious. We also made sure to leave with a Thai Iced Tea Cindy was our server and she is the best. If you haven't been here yet, you must visit. Enjoyed a late lunch at Taiko on Saturday with my kid. We shared dumplings, takoyaki (wheat flour octopus balls), and she ordered the Salmon Lunch Box, which came with salad and soup. I ordered two rolls (the only ones that did not have rice): Naruto Roll & Phoenix Roll. The Naruto roll was tasty and the cucumber was nice and crunchy. The Phoenix roll had spicy tuna with avocado on top - also delicious. Both came with a yummy ponzu sauce that I alternated between dipping with soy sauce. When it arrived I was like oh man I'm not gonna be able to finish this. No. I SMASHED IT. I don't know which one I liked more. It was so good. It makes me want to break my sad eating sushi alone unwritten rule, and order from them all the time. Thwarted in my attempt to have dinner at nearby Thai Ghang Waan (https://www.yelp.com/biz/thai-ghang-waan-springfield) since I was a n00b and forgot to make reservations, my party of five decided to head across the street to Taiko Japanese Restaurant. At first I was a bit hesitant since I last ate here in 2018 and the experience was...fine. Not terrible, not amazing, but fine. And you know what? In 2023, after eating here again after 5 years, the experience is...fine. Located in a strip mall off of always busy Backlick Road, Taiko is like any other suburban Asian restaurant. Generic in it's design elements while serving up cuisine that tries to appeal to a wide audience as to not offend anyone. The motif is punctuated with hardwood floors, with dark browns and blacks being the predominate color palette. The design aesthetic straddles between trying to be "modern" while giving off a sushi joint vibe complete a sushi bar towards the back of the dining room. Several folks at the table got sushi entrees, and surprisingly, they were pretty good. The fish didn't have a slimy texture or off putting smell, and the rice wasn't too sticky and had the right amount of vinegar mixed in. The table also shared a deep fried tofu appetizer which was okay. Pieces of soft tofu was sliced in cubes, and then after a light breading, given a deep fry bath which gave it a crispy exterior with a soft interior. Could've done without the bonito flakes as garnish. I opted for the Udon noodles since I wasn't in the mood for sushi and again...it was fine. A large bowl contained a good portion of udon noodles, chicken, the customary pink/white fish cake, and some veggies. I asked for some togarashi powder and soy sauce since the broth was on the bland side. However, I will say, the tempura shrimp were tasty! Two shrimps were laid flat and had a generous panko coating of bread crumbs and were nice and crunchy. I also had some of my friend's "hibachi style beef" and while the meat had a nice sear from a high heat grill, the flavor was...fine. Taiko is not the most authentic Japanese restaurant, but not the worst place. The dining room was pretty busy and there was a steady stream of take out orders, so they must have their fans. If I'm being honest though, it'll probably be another several years before I eat here again...and that will be "fine" with me. read more

Small place in a small strip mall. I got there right when they opened at 12:30 p.m. on a Sunday. Because it was a cold day I ordered the Sho Chiku Bai hot sake, though I usually prefer chilled, higher-quality sake. I also got a side order of edamame, which was served slightly salted and went perfectly with the sake. For my main dish I got the sushi and sashimi combo (not the sushi & sashimi lunch, which has less food and a plain tuna roll). I got 5 pieces of nigiri, 11 pieces of sashimi, and a special taiko roll. I think the special roll was the Fire Phoenix Roll. The dish came with a simple side salad and miso soup. The salad came with a dressing that was nice, but slightly too sweet for my taste. The soup had a nice base, it wasn't the traditional bonito base. Instead it seemed to be a clam base. For $17.50 you can choose 3 different sushi rolls and the special also comes with miso soup and a salad. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll, chicken tempura roll, and the spicy blue crab crunch roll. This place is excellent. I came in here tonight for dinner out of curiosity. The decor is ultramodern Japanese, what you would expect in a sushi bar in Japan. There was a sushi bar, but I sat at a regular table. I got hot sake (large, $10.00), hibachi steak and shrimp (medium well-done, $27.50, including a salad with peanut sauce and miso soup), and coffee ice cream for dessert ($9.50). The service was quick and friendly. Chopsticks are available if you want to use them--these meals are always best eaten with chopsticks, so it is worth learning. The servings were generous. Normally I would have eaten half, and taken the rest home for the next day, but I hadn't eaten all day, so it filled me up. The fried rice with the steak and shrimp had onions, broccoli, green peppers, red peppers, and some other vegetables. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasty. The hot sake, was really refreshing on this cold December night. It must have been in the 20s out there. The facilities were clean and well maintained. Keep up the great work. The food was phenomenal, the service was outstanding and our waiter/waitress was so accommodating. My mom ordered sesame chicken with fried rice and I ordered Chicken Hibachi with fried rice. We also had crab Rangoon and ended up ordering 2 because 1 just wasn't enough! This is likely my new favorite spot! I had a chance to visit this little gem and I told them about how great the restaurant is. After ordering my meal they accidentally gave me a different dish. I ordered Tempura but they gave me the Tempura roll instead of the regular Tempura dish I would normally order. I'm sure it was partly my fault but this opened up a great opportunity. I am obsessed with eel sauce so this was a big deal for me. Cons: - It's a very unassuming place that you wouldn't really know was there. - Getting in or out of their parking lot sucks.
