Yesterday my grandson and I went to Kanpai Sushi for take out. My grandson ordered the teriyaki beef and gyoza and I ordered the Chirashi. When we got home my grandson said his rice tasted like soap and was cold. I didn't taste the soap but it was definitely cold. I heated it up and it was fine. When I looked at my chirashi it was covered in fish and looked really good. I opened my food container and it smelled a little fishy. When I took my first bite the rice was ice cold too with no seasoning. It wasn't sushi rice it was just plane white rice. When I took my first bite of fish I had to spit it out and the texture and flavor was very bad. I drove it all the way back to get a refund which the lady was very kind and apologized for the problem. I noticed that the food servers had no hair covering and the guy had curly longer hair which grossed me out. Won't be going back there again. I hope they improve for others that might try them.

I've come to two different locations, Dublin and Brentwood. I thought maybe it was a fluke. But this is not authentic Japanese sushi. It doesn't taste like traditional sushi and I eat sushi ALOT from all over and this is not made correctly. You can taste the difference. So disappointing to get sushi that is poor food quality. The food looks good, but if you know sushi you know quality. Service was nonexistent, I had to get up and ask for water, ask for a box, and almost beg him to bring me my check. Maybe it was an off day for this location on service but food quality, both locations are the same. I will not be eating at this establishment again or any locations under this name. Really disappointing.

Ugh..... I wanted to like this place because it was near our hotel and convenient in a nice area near all the little plaza places, but there was NO vibe, nothing special about the inside, and what made it worse was the customer service was horrible! The guy that was serving us didn't even say hello or acknowledge that we were paying customers. He didn't even speak to us at all even when he was getting our order. The sushi was just OK but it was falling apart the whole time they didn't wrap it enough so we were just eating piles of sushi. 60$ for 2 hand rolls and 2 orders of saki I feel like we should of gotten better customer service, no wonder the place was empty. The cups they gave us for the beer with our sake was dirty also. We asked for dipping saucers for our sushi and he acted irritated that we even bothered. I wouldn't come here again. I gave a 2 because the shrimp tempura was fresh but like I said it was falling apart. Don't expect much when you come here.

I always love sushi and wanted to try this new Japanese restaurant in Dublin. It's not bad. A little above average but nothing stood out. I ordered online and our order was ready in 30 minutes. My husband had the beef teriyaki dinner with a side of sashimi. The beef was ok. It could have been more tender and it was cooked all the way through with no pink. My chirashi had a generous amount of fish over sushi rice. The quality and freshness of sashimi was average though. The texture on a few slices were off which is definitely a freshness indicator. I'm happy my husband and I tried this new restaurant to support a local restaurant. The portions and price are good, unfortunately the quality was average.

My boyfriend and I stopped by here for a quick bite. It appears to be a small local biz/family owned, not a chain restaurant. I ordered the Veggie Roll with soy paper (instead of the default nori) and my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Yaki Udon. The gentleman helping us was incredibly kind, helpful, and quick to service us. The staff don't speak English very well, but they understood us with zero problems. The food arrived quickly, and I was incredibly happy with how my roll tasted! It was also incredibly cheap - $10 for my roll. I'd recommend this place for a quick bite to eat when you want something nice and authentic. This isn't a "fancy" place, but it's exactly what I wanted and needed it to be.

I'm just not a fan and I looooove sushi. First off, I want to start off by saying that this review is strictly based off of the food quality, pricing, and portion. Honestly, I would have given 2-stars instead of 3-stars, but the extra star is really for the staff here. The customer service was phenomenal and location of this new restaurant cannot be beaten. I live in Pleasanton and this borderlines Pleasanton/Dublin, so it is quite convenient to get to. I also like that there's ample parking and I can walk around the plaza, or even across the street to do some shopping. It is also a good destination to grab lunch/dinner, if you're seeing a movies at the theaters too. So, my friend and I decided to finally check out this new place on Sunday. When we got there, we were immediately greeted and they even accommodated us eating outdoors. The restaurant itself was clean, organized, and compliant with covid regulations. Upon sitting down to look at the menu to order, I was thrown off by the price increase in everything. Mind you, this is a brand new restaurant but yet their new menus were already altered for a price increase in every item. I can look past this as I know it's a difficult time during the pandemic. We ordered 2 sushi rolls (49ers roll and Sugar Mama roll) and a side of garlic noodles and the entire meal came out to $50 for two. I think if it was a good meal, I wouldn't have minded the price as much. The meal was par at most. The portion is definitely less than most other sushi restaurants. There was a total of 8 pieces per roll. The Sugar Mama roll was drenched in sauces, so you couldn't even tell that the fish were fresh or top grade. The 49ers roll had less sauce but because of that you can tell the rice consistency was nonexistent and the imitation crab mix inside of the sushi roll is heavy handed with Mayo. So unless you're a really big Mayo fan, the taste may be a bit off putting/overwhelming. The garlic noodle was a bigger portion than we expected (no complaints there), was flavorful, and on the dryer end of stir fry noodles. I think it speaks volume when you go to a sushi restaurant and you end up liking their garlic noodle over their actual specialty in sushi, right? Nevertheless, it was a good experience to try out and support a new business in town. But I wouldn't necessarily have it at the top of my list or have this place be my go-to for sushi.

JAPANESE FOOD GROWING ON ME I've traveled around different places around the world but I've only been to Japan once. However something about Japanese food that is growing on me lately. In terms of simplicity two features of Japanese food I think about - colorful and flavorful. When I go to a Japanese return I either go to eat sushi or ramen but not both. However there was one Japanese eatery I ate at where I had not only sushi but also udon. The first time I came to Kanpai Sushi was in October with my friend. For the sushi rolls we ordered the Mendocino, Godzilla, and Deep Fried California. Out of the three rolls the California was the one I liked the most because I never had that roll deep fried. In addition the Deep Fried California did not have a lot of crab meat so you can taste the whole roll. Even though the Mendocino and Godzilla were tasty both had too much sauce for my liking. However if you like a lot of sauce with your sushi rolls these rolls would be great for you. This eatery doesn't sell ramen, which I am glad as I have been eating too much ramen. With number of udon soups on the menu I had the opportunity to try something different. For that night I ordered the Tempura Udon. I liked how the tempera items were separated from the broth so that the breading will still be crunchy. With the separation of items you can decide if you want to place some of tempura in the soup. I decided not to combine the tempura with the soup as I felt you get different textures when you eat the soup and tempura separately. The second time I ate here was in November. Just as with the first time I ordered rolls and udon but not the exact same items. For the rolls I wanted a balance between raw, sauced, and cooked hence my friend and I ordered the Rainbow Roll, 49ers Roll, Rolls Royce, and Caterpillar Roll. Out of the rolls I preferred the 49ers Roll because the salmon melts in your mouth. For udon I ordered the Beef Udon. To my surprise and delight each cut of beef was seared. The seared beef flavors the broth that brings a depth of texture. In terms of presentation I would rather have seared, brown-colored beef than an unseared, grey-colored beef. Eating here at Kanpai Sushi provided an insight why Japanese food is growing on me with the different varieties of sushi rolls and udon. Next time I come here I will try different types of items such as sashimi and dinner entrees.

Wow! Some of the freshest sushi I have had in a while--better than some places I have been to in San Francisco! The Marilyn Monroe roll is just the perfect amount of spice and I can't wait to have it again! Pretty usual pricing maybe a little on the higher side-- 2 rolls cost me $30-not too expensive, but there were definitely some pricier rolls to order. I ordered on their website and paid and then my boyfriend picked it up with no trouble at all. I will be coming back and I can't wait to try more!

I just tried this sushi place for the first time today. I absolutely love sushi (ordering it 2-3 times per week, from my favorite places), thus I finally decided to give this place a try as our last outdoor dining opportunity, before we transitioned back into stricter shelter-in-place orders (due to COVID-19). I 100% regret my decision however. The Hamachi sashimi tasted like it had been previously frozen and thawed out (multiple times). The (spicy) OMG roll not only didn't look appetizing, but it also did not taste fresh (and the sauce on this roll is definitely less than ideal. The garlic edamame also had zero flavor (....I could see the garlic sprinkled throughout but could not taste it....so weird). Also, the dressing that came on the salad tasted really strange (....not a flavor that I've ever tasted before, on the salads that come with sashimi orders). - I literally took 1 bite of each item and could not consume any more. I had to throw away all of it, as I was terrified that another bite might make me sick. I immediately started digging for gum in my purse....I had to get the different tastes out of my mouth. The hostess was great, as she was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. - The taste of the good however, is not something I would recommend. Such a bummer read more

I have only eaten at Kanpai Sushi once, so I acknowledge that there is a possibility that the restaurant had an off day. I love sushi and I enjoy eating a lot of it in one sitting. I love Dynamite, Rainbow, California, and Salmon roles, so I always order these whenever eating at a sushi restaurant. The service at the restaurant was fast and good. We were seated immediately, our order was taken quickly, and the food came out pretty fast. However, the sushi rolls just did not taste good. Definitely below average, and not something I will crave for in the future. The water tasted like unfiltered tap water. I would recommend the restaurant use a Brita to filter the water so it tastes better. Running a restaurant is difficult. I hope Kanpai Sushi can make some improvements on their food and become better. read more

Ordered take out for the first time. Thought I'd give it a shot as most of the reviews are positive. Had a few of the different rolls. The food is about on par with the sushi you would get at an average grocery store maybe a little worse. The rice is cold and hard like it was premade the day before and just thawed out. None of the food is fresh. It's drowned in sauces in an attempt to hide the lack of freshness of the fish it seems. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't go here again. read more

Went here with the hubbs for dinner tonight because we were craving sushi. They had lots of dishes to choose from but we got the appetizer sashimi which had tuna and salmon. Thick cut and really fresh! def recommend to get it :) We also got hamachi kama, omg roll, and I completely forgot the other one because we told the owner what we liked and he just recommended it and we agreed! The server was helpful and friendly, the atmosphere was nice, but the food was just so so. The miso soup was pretty disappointing, had a greasy/buttery flavor and texture. The roll was as expected but the salad was good. A good location for folks popping off the highway on the way home to the valley. read more

I honestly feel bad saying this, but this was the worst sushi I have ever had. I had to send my roll back, luckily they didn't charge me for it. Everything was synthetic, not fresh. My cousin ordered a volcano roll and the tuna tasted like canned tuna. The avocado in the rolls wasn't fresh. I got a fried roll and it was burnt, the inside the avocado was brown, the salmon was brown and the seaweed paper was like melted. I've never had a fried roll like that before. I'm not sure if it was just a bad day, but the quality of the food was awful. I've actually never written a bad review on a restaurant before now or sent food back before now. read more

Food is ok but not great. Service is about as bad as can be. It's like being served by someone who's absolutely annoyed that you went to their restaurant. You can't ask for customizations (my daughter doesn't eat crab). Questions are greeted with a grumpy face. Same with requests for water. Absolutely amazed that they remain in business. Server does smile to customers ... who are not minorities. read more

First and Last time going there. I ordered sushi to go regret placing the order when I took a step into the restaurant. No one there not one customer. The cooks in the back not even using gloves and touching everything. I asked for for soy sauce and sriracha the owner I'm guessing gave me attitude and said everything was in the bag, so I left. Checked the bag when I got to my car and just soy sauce so I went back asked for sriracha and guy was giving me attitude saying got was in the bag but it wasn't started talking in Asian to the cook that was poking his nose. We did outdoor dining on a cold evening this weekend. I'm was so glad that they had a heat lamp that kept us warm outside. All the rolls we ordered tasted great, but the portioning was small. I wish they'd give us larger pieces of fish. The menu was a little confusing, didn't have any pictures so we chose at random, and asked for our server's recommendations. read more

Decided to try Kanpai for the first time. Very disappointed. Spent $110 including tip for a takeout order. 2 Katsu bento boxes were terrible. Katsu looked burnt and tasted old, definitely not freshly cooked. Sushi rolls were less than average, IMO. Will not be returning. read more

We ordered take out from here for my husband's birthday over the weekend and we were not impressed at all! Their website has a discount code that they are promoting but it is expired. I called the store about it and they did not honor it. That is fine. Their food on other hand....we ordered assorted sashimi and a few rolls. The tuna was not fresh and you can tell that shrimp tempura in the rolls was fried in advance. It was not crispy or fresh at all. The roll was supposed to have unagi sauce on top but it wasn't a thick consistency so it looked very sloppy and unappetizing. This restaurant was promising at first since Dublin is their 2nd store, but this place is nothing to rave about and I don't think we will be coming back. read more

First time visiting this place after reading the good reviews but had a horrible experience. Decided to take-away due to poor air quality and requested one of the staff to ensure the order is correct as that was for my daughter's birthday dinner. In spite of that when we got home and opened the package, we got the wrong items and the freshness of some of the items were questionable. I called to report this and they apologized and hung up. I had to call back again and insist that they refund the missing/wrong item. read more

Rather mediocre mall sushi. Unappetizing looking and tasting fish that seems and smells as if it's been refrozen a few times too many. Barely adequate service. OK in a pinch and probably not lethally toxic. But that's about the most one can really say about the place. read more

I just ordered from here last night for dinner through door dash and our order was thoughtfully packed and delicious. I requested that mustard sauces and sesame seeds not be added to my sushi order as we have a couple picky eaters and an allergy to seeds and the establishment was thoughtful to honor my request. The garlic noodles are a family favorite and the portion sizes are large. We may order again this evening! Great food all around. read more

I had lunch today at the Dublin location. It was the worst Japanese food that I have ever had. I had to remove two large HARD balls of rice from the plate. it was inedible. The teriyaki chicken was all dark meat. The miso soup was way too salty. The dressing on the salad was actually good. read more

Ive tasted a bunch of dishes from this spot and have always enjoyed them. Although most of my orders are take out the staff is always friendly! I was surprised how good the tuna rolls were given their 8 dollar price and their lunch combos are fantastic! 15 dollars for good quality spicy chicken, rice, salad, miso soup, and gyoza! Definitely my favorite go-to location for work lunches! read more

Currently open for takeout and outdoor dining! There are lots of options on the menu with both standard rolls & unique rolls created by the chef. I ordered the OMG roll (spicy tuna with their house-made OMG spicy sauce) - the fish is fresh and the sauce tasted great, highly recommend! Their garlic noodles are a delicious appetizer. Will definitely be coming back here to satisfy my sushi cravings. read more

Then she looked annoyed because we asked for 2 half rolls instead of a full one because we didn't want to fill up and not be able to try anything else. It took another 5 minutes to get the half rolls back. Well, around 8:15pm and after our first round of sushi, a different server comes by to notify us that they're doing last call. It was annoying because we barely started eating/ordering and they're doing last call 15 min after being seated? It would have been nice if the original waitress notified us of that. So, like any other reasonable people, we ordered 16 pieces of nigiri and 1.5 more rolls. At this point we over ordered because we panicked AND they charge for extra leftovers including rice. We knew they were about it and would definitely charge so we had no other option except to man vs food it in like 15 more minutes because it was such an unpleasant experience and we just wanted to leave since everyone working seemed like they wanted to go home. TLDR: servers are rude n lwk hate their jobs, sushi is actually really good tho 4/5, we were pressured to do AYCE sushi in 30 minutes

It's one of the best vanilla ice creams I'd ever had. I probably never tasted vanilla ice cream that good before! I also appreciate the staff for helping with us with our orders! He said the Nigiri was fresh, tempura was fried nicely, not oily and the tempura was tasty. The Miso soup and salad were fresh and tasty. We will definitely go back. First of all, Kanpai Sushi is an excellent place to grab a bite before or after the movies and secondly, the food is excellent. Thirdly, the staff is super nice and they know exactly what we want when we get there. We usually go there every weekend and they know where we usually sit, what we are going to order and even when we may need extra rice and such. I honestly can't say enough about this little restaurant because quite frankly, they feel like an extended family that knows just how to get our bellies full and get the smiles going for myself and my kids! It's our favorite Japanese restaurant and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a bite to eat before or after the movies! read more

Great food once you get it! Service is really slow. Had to ask 3x's for some water and my miso soup came AFTER sushi arrived. 1-130 arrival so understaffed but once the food came all good. I'd have to give it a 2nd go at some before or after a movie over there. read more
