I really like this place! It's a cute hole in the wall spot on Ventura. Very close to my work so I have come here for lunch & I have also dined here for dinner. Both times I got Pad Thai with tofu and I've also tried their Spicy Fried Rice with tofu. This place is a great option for Thai food; they don't exactly stand out from others but for convenience and if you're looking for a place for some decent Thai food then I would definitely recommend it. The only issue I had is with their lunch special, it comes with a main dish, two chicken egg rolls and a salad. Because I'm vegetarian they didn't bring out the chicken egg rolls and didn't offer to substitute it with anything; when I asked they said the only thing they could do is bring out more salad. Well... I'm a little confused here. I called to place a order for gluten free Thai food yet the staff tells me they don't do gluten free. My original visit here they did for us specially. Great Thai option for Sherman Oaks; It's my go-to for takeout. But be careful with delivery, it could take over an hour during the dinner hour, however you can always opt to pick up. Worth the gamble. Eats: pineapple fried rice - recently discovered this in the menu and never looking back- must order. The cashews complete the dish. I tried Kao Cafe in March 2012. The food was good, not the most flavorful I have ever had, but definitely tasty. The two stars are for service. A hour and a half before closing time, one of the employees started to clear the table, even though it was obvious that we weren't done eating. We asked if we can have some more time, and she came back literally one minute later and took the plates away, half full. We were the only customers eating in the restaurant, and a few people came in for takeout. The staff was cold. I have a feeling this may have been a gay thing, I was there on a date with someone of the same sex. I hate to jump to the conclusion that it was discrimination, but hey, I've seen it before. They said no but i noticed on the door that the posted hours said they were still open so I made a mental note and left. Didn't think I'd return but friends wanted to go last night so I got to try the food. Thought it was delicious but all was spicier than my husband likes. Would have liked clean plates between apps and main courses. Would have liked serving utensils and knives without having to ask. Not sure if I'll go back. There are a zillion thai restaurants in the valley. One plus, plenty of street parking which is free after 6 PM. Not sure what the difference is between regular Thai food and Thai street food. This place is as good as it gets! Upon arrival, we were greeted and, seated immediately. The food here is absolutely phenomenal! The hostess was the sweetest thing, this side of Bangkok! My wife has a fish allergy and, advised them of it. The kitchen staff was quick to accommodate, without any hassles! For starters, we had the Chicken Satay appetizer. For the main course, I had their Seafood Pad Thai extra Spicy with extra noodles, and my wife had the Pineapple Fried Rice with Tofu. The Pad Thai had all the salty, Sweet, spicy and sour flavor nuances, you would come to expect from such a dish. There was a perfect balance of flavors that danced around my palette. The spice level was just right! The pineapple Fried Rice tasted so good! I was left wanting more! I almost forgot to mention the drinks! We had a Coke, and Thai Iced Tea. So I'll preface this review by saying that Thai food is my favorite and I am very picky when it comes to rating Thai places. That being said Im giving this place 3 stars. When I got there with my friend we were greeted quickly and they brought out our drinks pretty fast. I ordered pad thai and dumplings and my friend ordered a green curry (which I didnt try but he seemed to like). The food came out fast too, and that was nice. The dumplings were okay, definitely had better though. As for the pad thai it was not a very good example of my favorite dish. It was a little too sweet for my taste and it wasn't spicy AT ALL even though I asked them to make it spicy. After trying to tough it out I had to ask the waitress if I could make it any spicier! She brought out a tiny little spice dish and it did the trick, but I would of rather it come out from the beginning. Honestly, if Im just going off of food I would give this place 2 stars. The reason Im giving it three is because the waiters were really nice and attentive. I also really enjoyed the atmosphere and the prices were good. On the two occasions that I've been to Kao Cafe, I was happy with this place. I feel like the food is dependably good: Fresh, flavorful, well-prepared. And not too expensive. I went most recently three days ago (the day after 4th of July). The tiny dining room was about half full during lunch. Our orders were taken quickly, and the food came out promptly. We ordered EPT (eggplant, pumpkin and tofu), which was savory and fresh, along with brown rice, and silver noodles with shrimp. I had a Thai iced coffee, my companion had a Thai iced tea. I'm only giving Kao Cafe a very low rating because of GRUBHUB, which is the worst delivery service of them all. Plus there is no way to really contact them. I finally found a # and a young man had no idea what to. I asked for a Supervisor and he said he'd report it. Last nite was the 2nd time Grubhub has totally botched our delivery. The 1st time we didn't get the delivery at all and last nite, the poor driver was sent to an obscure address in the 90077 area (we're 91423). When he finally get to us, it was 45 minutes late. The food was cold and couldn't be warmed up very well. Our company was understanding, but this was the 2nd time! The GH person I talked to said they'd give us 20% off our next order. Working on Sepulveda there are a plethora of lunch options but not many that are that good or quick or affordable. This restaurant is breath of fresh air from the ridiculous amount of mediocre sandwich places. For $8 you get an awesome lunch special. Where you can choose between a number of noodle and curry plates. The food is served with these giant wontons and a can of soda. It's pretty awesome. The pad see ew itself was good. I was kinda wierded out that the noodles kept sticking together, but other than that it was quite a fine lunch. This was a total surprise find! An out-of-town friend wanted to eat at a favorite Sherman Oaks restaurant. Off we go, skipping down the street purses in hand, only to find a 1-hour long (*clutch mah pearls*). Shoulders slumped, eyes downcast, we thought we were defeated. I wish the glasses were...glass...not plastic (but, hey, street food spirit!), but otherwise I have no complaints. All of the dishes were yummy, but the Hot Basil entree and the EPT (eggplant, pumpkin, tofu) stood out to me. The pad see ew was not memorable...sorry but it just didn't light my fire! As a bonus, the style is wonderful considering the constrained space. Far from feeling cramped, the high industrial-style ceiling and zen decor make things quite nice. I have also had the Thai ice tea, which is perfectly sweet yet delicious. Only reason I'm docking a star is for atmosphere. It's a little stuffy inside, which is why I always take out. The atmosphere is cute, the prices are low, and the staff is friendly. The food is fine, sort of hit and miss I guess which is why I'm giving it 3 stars. So far I've had the lemongrass soup, coconut soup, chicken laarb, fresh roll, and pad see ew. The lemongrass soup (tom yum) is so flavorful but they skimp on the veggies, it only comes with mushrooms. Same issue with the coconut soup, super tasty but no veggies other than mushrooms. The fresh roll was very good, but the sauce was way too salty. The chicken laarb was good but the pad see ew was way too salty and on the greasy side. They claim to have parking in the back but I've yet to find it. All of the spots are clearly marked as belonging to other nearby businesses. I've always found metered street parking right out front. I'm not sure why I keep coming back, maybe because it's so close to my house. Some of the menu items really need improvement. I'll give this place one more try but the next time I get a craving for Tom Yum I'll just go to Monster Thai on Riverside. read more

I think this place is as good as it gets for great inexpensive Thai food in L.A. I've spot in several times while en route to other places on the 101 and I've been very happy with the food every time. The pad thai is marvelous and seems fresh and non-stinky, which is saying a lot compared with a lot of other good Thai places. The curry is good too... and I recently dined in and tried their chicken tom kha soup, which was probably the BEST I've ever had. For our entrees we got panang beef curry, pineapple chicken curry mild, red chicken curry spicy, and tofu prik king. The panang was really good but seemed to lack the accompanying vegetables, the pineapple curry was delish, and the red curry was spicy as promised. My only complaint was the prik king, it was on the salty side and very greasy. I had to scoop everything to the side to let the grease and curry paste drip off. I like it. I've only done take out. Food is good. The place is very clean and staff is nice. And they prep their food fast! The times I've gone, I just go, order and wait. No need to call ahead.
