I rarely give a mark this low to any restaurant, but Thai On Ventura worked very hard to earn this score. We ordered food to be delivered and each item was a major disappointment. Shrimp Spring Rolls consisted of a large handful of lettuce, an erstwhile shred of carrot or two, and perhaps one solitary shrimp, sliced into pieces and buried deep within the greens -- all wrapped in the usual rice paper and served with peanut sauce that was serviceable but far from anything truly tasty. The rolls themselves were pretty much flavorless and unpleasant. Dumplings (offered on a BOGO deal) were clearly of the packaged variety, served 1/2 steamed, the others fried. Again, very little flavor; served with a thicker, sweeter teriyaki style sauce rather than the vinegary dumpling sauce one expects. Chicken Pad Thai was the worst of the lot. Just dry chicken and the rice noodles, bland and pretty terrible. None of the other usual ingredients, and zero flavor. I don't know if the holiday weekend led to the D-Team working the kitchen, or if this is actually the best they can do. Whichever the case, we have no plans to give this another try. read more

The Thai food at this location is on point. I love the Crispy Fish Garlic which is Crispy fried and topped with fried garlic flakes and served with house spicy seafood sauce. The flavors are delicious and mouth watering and well worth the try. Also their Fried Pork Belly With Basil which is Fried pork belly with onions, bell peppers, Thai chili and sweet Thai basil is just as delicious. I do not know about you, but for me, the search for, and to eat at, a restaurant that I have never been to, is endless. In this hungry moment of discovery, Thai on Ventura, located in Encino, presented itself. The restaurant is the smallest I have seen. Think of it like one narrow corridor, with tables. The seating is therefore limited, but the environment is clean and inviting. Actually, a very unique set up. You sit on only one side and watch embedded TVs about Thailand, advertisements and sponsors, on the wall on your opposite side. The music here is soft jazz, so wonderful, welcoming, just mild, the right pitch and most if not all, instrumental. Superb. They open at 11 am on a weekday, I walked in much after that time, with a specific order in mind. The Garlic Pepper Jumbo Prawns, priced at $28. The limited internet photos were mouth watering. But I had apprehension even before ordering, so I asked questions. Could I see the Jumbo Prawns that would be cooked? At that price, I needed to see the size of the crustaceans. The server immediately got into defensive mode, became protective, stating that it may not be jumbo, and could be different in size. There would be no show and tell. I still persisted and asked most politely, for cooperation, in more than one way. The server was still adamant and refused to comply with my simple request. That to me was a huge red flag. So I promptly capitulated, ordered the Basil Beef lunch special to go (a dish that could be eaten several hours after it was brought home). The basil beef was chewy, all its big pieces, but had taste. The requested Thai Chili with fish sauce was dark in complexion, a sign that clearly lacks freshness. Thai on Ventura is a great find overall. The Pad Thai was really good. It had to be my top favorite compared to others I've tried. It was rich, flavorful, and perfectly moist. You can tell the flavors are well thought out and cooked fresh. The spicy chicken basil had an amazing sauce with great flavor and spice, but the chicken itself was a bit tough. That said, the sauce was so good it still made the dish enjoyable. The restaurant is a little small inside, but that wasn't an issue. The staff was very fast and attentive, and the food came out quickly, which is always a plus. I do want to highlight the pricing of this restaurant. With how great the food is, you are getting more than your moneys worth. Very affordable. Very good quality of food. Definitely one of the better Thai spots in the area and worth checking out. read more

We ordered takeout for dinner from here. Street parking outside on Ventura, it was pretty easy to find a spot. The restaurant itself is long and narrow but has a decent amount of seating, though I can see it filling up quickly. When picking up the takeout, I asked if they had hot sauce packets and he said it's inside the bag. Unfortunately when I brought the food back home, I found there was none. Oh well, no biggie. Onto the food... Papaya Salad: When ordering, we saw that there were a few options. One is regular Thai style and another was called salted crab. It was $1 more and we assumed that would mean there would be chunks of crab in the salad which sounded amazing, so we opted for that one. Oof that was a mistake. We honestly couldn't even eat this. The entirety of the salad had a fishy taste and odor, and not in a good way (context: we love fish typically). The crab wasn't even something you could eat, there were chunks of crab shell pieces in it. So it gives it a crab flavor... but I wouldn't even say the flavor is crab. Just a really foul fishy smelling and tasting salad. I'm not sure why they even have this on the menu. Thai style papaya salad clearly would have been the better choice. Pineapple Curry: We got this with seafood. We really enjoyed this. I drank up as much curry as I could get. Really flavorful and it was a nice mix of different seafood inside - white fish, mussels, calamari and shrimp. Pad Kee Mow (Drunken Noodle): We typically like this dish from other Thai restaurants so got this here. This was a pass for us. We got it with chicken. It was really just meh and not very flavorful and good. I didn't eat much of it, just a couple bites. I felt like it had a strange hint of cleaning products which really turned me off from it. Crying Tiger: This was a grilled meat dish, ribeye. It was good but it feels more like an appetizer to me instead of a main dish costing the full price of a main dish (nearly $19). At least the meat was cooked well and it was tasty. We enjoyed it. Overall some wins (the curry, the crying tiger) and some big losses (the papaya salad with salted crab, the drunken noodle). The restaurant has really high reviews though so maybe we just got the wrong dishes. read more

We were looking for a quick bite and found this tasty little spot. Parking is a challenge but we did luckily find parking on the street-- don't forget to pay the meter. We got in during their lunch special. so was able to try a few dishes. The curry and kung pao had just the right amount of heat for kiddos to enjoy. The pad see ew was tasty. The fact that the lunch comes with a salad and potsticker is icing on the cake. Everything came out hot and quickly. There wasn't anything that I felt like "oh we have to come back for that". But we also didn't get too adventurous as there wasn't too many options on the lunch menu. The waitress was attentive and kind. I ordered the fresh spring rolls and the tom kha soup with shrimp at a medium spice level (my usual baseline at a new place), and the broth was absolutely divine--rich, balanced, and comforting. The service really sealed it for me. The waitstaff were warm, attentive, and genuinely accommodating to our party of five, which made the meal feel relaxed and welcoming instead of rushed. Thai on Ventura has become my favorite Thai restaurant in the valley. I used to frequent another spot, which I won't name, but after trying this place, I never looked back. I've brought my mom and a few friends here, it's a cute little restaurant on the boulevard and the service is always excellent. The food is incredible! It's always hot, fresh, and flavorful. It's so good that I had to stop ordering from Postmates because I was ordering from here at least once a week. Lastly, whenever I have a sweet tooth and want a late-night snack, I order the mango rice because it feels like a "healthy" choice and they are open pretty late on weekends. Thai On Ventura is cozy, small and fits the bill for a neighborhood Thai restaurant in a casual atmosphere. I came in earlier this week with a friend and we enjoyed our time and the food! Service was minimal but just right and friendly. Seating is just indoor and is made up of tables with partial booth seating all along the right side. Soft music and TVs featuring some sights of Thailand make up the atmosphere. The menu is quite large so there should be a bit of something for all needs and tastes. Of course some items require choices being made of proteins or vegetables, types of rice and of course levels of heat/spiciness. We enjoyed the following on this first visit: Paya Salad w/grilled shrimp: Green papaya slices in lime juice, garlic, green beans, and tomatoes. We did this on a medium spice level which was perfect with just the amount of heat for us. Ingredients were fresh and the taste was flavorful. Quantity was enough to share for 2-3 people. Red Curry: Thai red curry and coconut milk, bell peppers, bamboo shots, eggplant, sweet basil. We did this with a choice of beef, purple rice and on a medium spice level. This was a comforting dish I am used to and the taste was just as good as others that I've had; the beef was tender. The purple rice was new to me so I wanted to try it, it was cooked well and has a slight stickiness to it, it has no flavor really but it was good to try. Crab Meat Fried Rice: Fried rice with white crab meat, egg, onion and tomatoes. The portion was huge and is easily good to share as well. Decent amount of crab and good flavor overall! Prices were good and comparable to other places I have been to. Parking options include a small lot in the back (the entrance is right on the side of the establishment) and street metered parking on Ventura. Looking forward to coming back or doing take out! This place is great! Their food is good, but my favorite thing here is their mango sticky rice. They seem to be the only Thai restaurant in the valley that have it available year around, as it is the only place I can find it in stock even when mangos aren't in season. The mango is always fresh and juicy and the purple sticky rice is served slightly warm with the perfect amount of sweet condensed milk. If you haven't tried it, you should. Disappointed in the food, very lackluster and flavor, ask for medium spice on Nam Tok receive none, Orange Chicken was very dry and no sauce on it whatsoever. Pad see ew looks had no flavor and broccoli tasted as if it had been microwaved very rubbery. For context this was a pick up order. Server was nice and pleasant and demeanor. My family orders take-out here weekly. This place is a must for vegetarians. The food is very consistent and very good. Staff is friendly.

My go to order is the yellow curry with seafood and a side of the fresh shrimp spring rolls. It tastes delicious! Highly recommend!

I've been here many times before and I've always recommended people to come but todays experience was very disappointing. I order my usual as I have posted about in the past. The papaya salad, the chicken pad Thai, the tum yum and so on... Todays tum yum was not only sweet but lacking any flavor and spice as I asked for spice between medium and hot. Same thing I asked for the papaya salad. This has been my signature spice selection for years. As I mentioned the spice was not right a man came from the inside named Adrian and was arguing as I have to choose one or the other. Medium or hot. That took me off guard as a customer should never be approached in this manner and perhaps it would have been nice to ask how they can make it right. Instead he went on with a snobby attitude as when I was there last. Very inappropriate. The table next to me added that they had been coming for 20 years and that they agreed it was not the same. Not sure if it's now under a new management as I didn't see any of the ladies from before but I would never go back here. Food is no longer good and service was terrible. My daughter had been here before and said it was delicious. She took me for dinner and I definitely agree. Ambiance was fine. It was a Monday night and the restaurant was empty besides people in and out for takeout. We ordered Tom Yum chicken mild, side of rice, satay, pad thai. The pad thai ohhhh myyy gosh!! Heaven! Loved every bite. Ordered black pepper chicken but we were so full with everything else we took that to go. Everything was delicious. And in the end we got mango sticky rice. The service was amazing. Restaurant is pretty narrow and small. Kinda hard to get around if someone is blocking the walkway. Service was okay. After being served we weren't checked up upon once. The spicy basil needed way more ground chicken this was such a tiny portion for what it's priced at :( I will admit the dumplings and Thai tea were great but fell short with the main course. read more

The portion sizes were generous--easily enough for two meals. The noodles could've been a bit softer for my taste. I love Thai food! I literally used to eat it daily when I lived in Gardena in the early 90's and so I was excited to try this place. We seem to have come on a busy evening and there was no greeter at the entrance and no sign with instructions as to what we should do (seat ourselves, wait to be seated?) so I walked to the rear of the restaurant and waited in line to place an order to go, since it was crowded and you could see people coming and going with takeout orders. I ordered egg rolls, calamari, pad see ew with chicken, crispy garlic fish, orange chicken and crab fried rice. Nothing special about the egg rolls, they were regular, but the Calamari was delicious and I liked the coating because it reminded me of a perfectly cooked onion ring, except it was squid lol. The orange fish was very good, I would definitely get this every time. The crab fried rice was also great, such a good taste plenty of crab - and the right amount of veggies and egg. My son enjoyed the Pad See Ew, it is his favorite. That just leaves the crispy garlic fish and the reason why I could only give this place four stars. I was so excited because it was fried perfectly but it smelled a little fishy. When I tasted the first bite, I knew right away, the fish was not fresh and honestly a little on the ammonia tasting side, see an aged fillet will be "fishy" and have an ammonia-like odor, which is a byproduct of the deterioration and decomposition process, and a true seafood connoisseur like myself notices these things. I was a little disappointed because this was the main reason I came to dine here. Loved this place! Super fresh ingredients and very friendly staff. Ordered the Nam Tok Salad, the Chicken Pad Kee Mow (Drunken Noodles) and the Isaan Larb Kua. Everything was really tasty and the server was great about explaining the spice levels. The Nam Tok and the Isaan Larb Kua were especially delicious because of the use of lime juice -- that tangyness paired with the spiciness and the savoriness in both dishes was a winning combo. In terms of spice level, I'd say that I usually like spicy food and handle it well, and the Medium was just right. There are additional chili sauces available if you want to dial it up a little bit. Very generous portions and I was honestly quite stuffed. The price is also ridiculously low and I have to say this is one of the most amazing value Thai places I've ever been too -- the pad kee mow was $12.99 for the chicken version!! They were making pickled chilis on one of the side tables, which is one sign you know this place is legit -- when they make their sauces and condiments from scratch, by hand. Love when I am with friends who love Thai food. That is how we came a crossed here. It is small and quaint. Staff is nice and friendly. The Thai Iced Coffee, was just the jolt I needed for the afternoon. My only disappointment was my dish of Pad See Ew. The photos on Yelp show an abundance of broccoli and protein. It needed a little more broccoli and I should've had shrimp instead of chicken. However, my friend's Tom Kha soup smelled and looked delicious. Maybe an off day? If you are in the neighborhood stop in maybe order an appetizer if you're on the hungrier side. This review is long overdue as I've had food from this place many times and it never fails. We started off with Thai iced tea which was perfectly sweetened. All the entrees that I have tried were amazing and the price point is very reasonable. I highly recommend their Seafood Fried rice. Loved the smokiness of the rice and it was loaded with shrimp/calamari which can be addicting. The flavors are really on point here so you can't go wrong with ordering anything on the menu. Family style is a must here since their portions are HUGE!! The service was superb and the food was outstanding. At the end of our dinner, my dad, usually a picky eater, told me to give this place a 6/5 stars and if I could, I would! Every dish we got was "ngon miệng" (in viet, it means yummy or well tasting). Could use more dried shrimp and I think thinner cut papaya could soak up the sauce well, but otherwise still a solid dish. - Seafood Curry, Extra Spicy w/ Purple Rice ($19.95) - This was stacked with goodies e.g. juicy scallops, fish fillets, 2 mussels.. and a shrimp but a sizeable one. The coconut and spices in the curry was sooooo tasty we nearly drank it to the last drop but we got way too full. Purple rice looked a little more moist than I'm used to but still bomb. Rare to find this kind of multigrain rice at restaurants. - Thai Spaghetti Kee Mow, Chicken, Spicy ($12.95) - SO MUCH CHICKEN. so much. If you've never had thai spaghetti before, this is the time to try it. Don't sleep on it. HAHA much umami - M Thai Tea ( $3.50) - would've liked the tea to be more stronger or for there to be less half&half. Otherwise decent. SERVICE: There was only waitress (on weekdays) who served and cleaned the tables, so as long as you're a little patient, service is great. Shout out to Nina for the smiles, friendliness, and good attitude. She also hooked it up with a green (not as spicy but flavorful) and red thai chili (ripe and ready to strike) :) PARKING: Free small lot in the back. For a place that has only been open for 8 months (everything's still new and clean), and is small at 5-7 tables, they have a constant pace of customers either dining in or taking out (even on a rainy day like today).
