I come to the LAX area for business regularly and have tried various Thai restaurants. I have to mention that I have food delivered to my hotel, so that is what my review is based on. I had the Tom Kha with Shrimp, Holy Basil with Beef, Phad Thai with Tofu and the Spicy Eggplant with Tofu. The flavors were very good but I was wish there were more vegetables in the Holy Basil, however it did have a good amount of basil, so the flavor was there. Unfortunately the eggplant in the Spicy Eggplant was waay overcooked and had melted to mush, so I was disappointed. I have to say the Tom Kha and Phad Thai was delicious. Portions were fair and it was delivered hot and the driver very nice. Overall, the flavors were good and I am willing to give them another try next time I'm in Sherman Oaks. read more

Such a great meal for the price! I got spicy fried rice with chicken and beef and let me tell you, it was a huge plate of it! They don't skimp you on anything! First & last time to order delivery from here. My estimated time was 45-60 minutes. I did not receive my food till after 1 hour and 40 minutes. Contacted them for an update after an hour and they were not helpful. Food was cold. Ordered the lunch chicken katsua - too salty and since I had reheat due to it being cold it became soggy. Shrimp Roll- gave 2 baby shrimp mainly carrots and lettuce. Definitely will not order delivery but after rude service over the phone I will not dine in. read more

This place USED to be AMAZING. Unfortunately, as of a few months ago it went downhill. Must be new management or something. I always get either the red, yellow or green curry and the crab wontons. All three were always amazing. However, the last time I ordered the red curry it was not even edible and had to throw it away. The yellow curry seemed a little different but okay and the green curry was again different and not very good. The flavor was lacking and there were huge chunks of uncooked eggplant. DO NOT order food from them ON-LINE, repeat DO NOT order from them on-line. We've ordered from them twice on-line and both times the deliveries took considerably longer than the time posted. A half and hour the first time and 45 minutes the second. You cannot call them because the phone number listed is not in service. I found Kao cafe via Yelp as I usually find places. I went in to put in a catering order for about 20 people. My wife and I sat with an employee for a good 30 min, went over the menu, she brought out a approximate 15"x15" tray and stated each item ordered will be about that size. We ordered numerous entrees and 1 tin of pineapple fried rice and 4 (four) tins of Pad Thai chicken. She then called the owner for a price quote on all that's. I arrived, paid $301, food was mostly ready on time. I finally put the food in my car and so many trays later, lost track of my order and drove home. 10 min later we realized we ordered 4x Pad Thai. I called to tell them they did not provide to me the 3 remaining trays of Pad Thai and the employee goes, "that's 4 servings of Pad Thai in that tray as you ordered. How incompetent can someone be?? Why would I order all entrees saying 1 tray and for pad Thai say 4-in-one?! I feel I was ripped off and treated like an idiot. Then she offers to have the food delivered to me if I paid full price for it. I tried to call and they said a manager will be in maybe Wednesday.... Sad. read more

Wow. Was I ever disappointed. This place is right in my area. I drive by it to go to/from work every day. I noticed it about a month ago and it looked cool. Thai street food was their angle and it sounded cool. So I finally had the opportunity to step foot in the establishment. 1st thing that was weird, it says they have parking in the back, maybe it was me but there was none to be found. Anyway, we went in and got seated. It was a Friday night and there were about 4 other people in the restaurant. It's small on the inside so it didn't really send up any warning signs that the food might not be good. So we ordered Duck roll appetizer, pad thai (of course this is the measuring stick for thai food lol, for non-thai people of course), and soft shell crab curry with white rice. So while we were waiting and looking around and checking things out, I went to the bathroom to wash my hands. You actually walk directly through the kitchen area to go to/from the bathroom. I didn't like that. I came back and noticed a big cloud of smoke and the front door wide open. Um mind you it was like 50 degrees outside or less, and it was damn cold so we moved to the back of the place. We got the pad thai first! What's up with the appetizer. We shared it, it was good, but nothing that stood out. Then we got the curry w/ soft shell crab and BROWN rice. I had asked for white rice initially. I went with it because I don't usually eat brown rice. Anyway, this tasted like someone had dumped curry over a cup of salt. I drank three waters and didn't even finish the curry it was so bad. The duck roll appetizer finally came out and that was salty too. It needed NO sauce at all but they put some salty sauce on it and served it up. We just ate the duck solo! Needless to say, I was not pleased with my experience. I'm not sure of these others that have reviewed this place but it was terrible. I've had better Thai food down in NOHO on Sherman Way than this place. That's my two cents. I will not be back....The clincher was that I told the server how salty the curry was and he said..."oh!" He didn't say, well let me see what I can do, maybe let me order something else, or have the cook try it again on that dish..nothing. Where oh where is the customer service these days! read more

It was really difficult to decide how many stars to give this place because they are inconsistent. At first, I thought the food was amazing! I ordered my favorite, pad see ew, and it was out of this world. Lately, however, it's been nothing but a pile of over-cooked rice noodles (mush) with no sauce at all. It was practically inedible. When I said something to the waiter, he said it's always prepared that way (No, it's not). But I kept giving them another chance. Last week, I decided to give them one more chance and ordered pad see ew and it was back to being amazing. Yay! Sadly, today I went back and GAH! Again, horrible pile of tasteless mush. Basically, somebody in the kitchen knows how to make the dish and somebody else back there shouldn't be in ANY kitchen. You just never know which person is going to be making the food on any given day. I'm probably not going to chance it again. Beef Pad see ew is a must ! It's the right about of sweetness and salty. Definitely try Tom yum soup here, shrimp or chicken is great.

Usually my go to spot for Thai food. Tonight I went for carryout and placed my usual large order. I forgot to add peanut sauce, which costs $.50. I paid by debit card for my order with a debit card and the restaurant requires you to spend a minimum of $10 to use a card. I wanted to buy peanut sauce (2) and did not have cash. The cashier told me that I would have to spend another $10 to be able to be use my card, which is unacceptable. They ended up charging a convenience fee to buy peanut sauce as opposed to giving me a couple on the house. I don't understand inconveniencing a customer for 2 small cups of peanut sauce. BEWARE! Food is great but service is horrendous. I wish we could order more but every time we order it is always a debacle. Eat24 is also just as responsible because they enable Kao Cafe and they don't do what is best for the customer. The past 2 times I ordered it took between 1 1/2 - 2 hours for delivery. My most recent order was placed for pickup. We waited 30 minutes past the pickup time at which point they offered delivery. We should have seen the writing on the wall and gone with instinct to cancel the order. But our hunger got the best of us and we took them up on their offer of delivery. We waited, waited, called, waited and finally the food arrived a few minutes shy of 2 hours from the time this debacle started. read more

Fast and friendly service. For the price you pay, the serving size is very big, and we were able to take home for leftovers. I ordered one of the daily specials that came with chicken and shrimp and it wasn't any fuss to slightly change the order to only contain shrimp. read more

I wandered back onto the site today and found that my summary of Kao Cafe's service and food had been filtered because it was deemed fraudulent and / or untrustworthy by Yelp's "groundbreaking" automated review filter. I'm not okay with that and am really tempted to never use Yelp again. Let's try this one more time: here is my review of Kao Cafe, hopefully it won't be redacted this time around... "I've eaten at the Kao Cafe several times now and it has consistently been a wonderful experience, both food-wise and service-wise. The staff are all very friendly and quick to serve, but it's the food that REALLY earned Kao Cafe this five-star review! I've tried several of their plates, but the Panang Soft Shell Crab Curry is by far my favorite! They also offer some amazing Shrimp Pad Thai! If you're a fan of amazing Thai food, give the Kao Cafe a try." This is not a Thai restaurant, it is a run of the mill "Asian Fusion" restaurant. Safe yourself and go to Thai town or practically any mom/pop Thai place in LA (you really can't swing a sack of potatoes without hitting one). The food looks/ tastes like it's made by someone who's never had real Thai, but it is on Ventura so I guess that is not surprising. I ordered a Larb Salad and anyone who knows Thai or has been to a real Thai place knows it is ground chicken with lovely spices, lemongrass, cilantro, onions and usually served with cabbage or sometimes lettuce. But larb is not a salad in the traditional American sense. What I got from Kao Café was literally a chicken salad that you can get from anywhere (including McDonalds). It was just Iceberg lettuce, carrots, cherry tomatoes and over-grilled chicken on top. It had a soy sauce/ginger dressing which was nice but distinctly more Japanese than Thai. I asked for it spicy b/c I was expecting actual larb, and they just threw some chili spice on top. Most of the menu consists of seemingly more Chinese inspired dishes. My friend ordered a salmon bowl and it looked exactly like something you would get from any number of rice bowl places like Yoshinoya, except it had seaweed on it, again NOT Thai. We also ordered spring rolls which were hard and over fried and were basically Chinese spring rolls that tasted like they may come from a freezer. DONT go here if you want authentic Thai, but its fine if you want a quick vaguely "Asian" lunch and you can order online for delivery (which was actually pretty fast). read more

I remember this place used to be a Cuban sandwich shop (blech) and before that at some point it was a chicken cafe. It's almost like this little spot is doomed for failure, but I hope that's not the case with Kao, which is finally a place I would eat at. It's more like a "mini" Thai restaurant, but they do their food well. Food was very tasty, portions were good, prices were good, everyone I went with was satisfied. The place is quite tiny but they did their best to accommodate our above-average sized group and they were very nice about it. Service was attentive and all smiles. Had the spicy noodle stir-fry (pad kee maow on a standard Thai menu) and it was all kinds of tasty, much better than I've had at other places and a great spiciness and basil flavor. For the lunch special, the included salad was wonderfully fresh with cool crunchy vegetables (something I'm not used to from restaurants, sadly) and a flavorful dressing. Also came with a plate of fried wontons and dipping sauce for everyone. My friends particularly enjoyed their garlic rice and salmon. Good stuff! In terms of menu items--the menu is quite limited compared to a full Thai restaurant (hence it being "mini"), but what they do, they do well. There are curries, a salmon bowl, a Korean style meat plate (might have been ribs?), a katsu cutlet bowl, and then your standard Thai dishes--pad Thai, spicy noodles, fried rice, etc. You can choose between plain, brown, or garlic rice, and choose between meat and tofu for many of the dishes, so it's quite vegetarian friendly. read more

Great little spot for a quick lunch or dinner. I came here for lunch - they have lunch specials until 3pm on Monday-Friday. I got a Thai iced tea to drink, which was tasty but a little too sweet for my taste. I ordered the Shrimp Pad See Ew lunch special which came with a small salad and fried wontons. Those were brought out almost immediately - the salad was light with a yummy Asian vinaigrette, and the wontons were divine. I'm not sure what they were filled with, it could have been apple or potato. Regardless, they were some of the best non-cream cheese wontons I've ever had. The pad see ew was good, not greasy at all and it was a large portion especially for lunch. I should have just ordered it without the shrimp though, since it only came with 4 pieces that tasted way fishier than shrimp should taste. Overall though, this is a great neighborhood Thai spot that is worth the visit if you live or work close by. read more

I honestly don't know how Kao Cafe has 4stars. Based on the high review, I visited Kao for lunch this afternoon excited to have pad thai and tom yum soup. The service was good. The waitress was nice and kept coming back to check with my food. But, the foods were TOO sweet! Pad Thai was way too sweet. I couldn't really taste any savory flavor. The noodle was soggy. Tom yum soup was just okay but I can have way better ones in LA. Lastly, I ordered Thai iced tea. I took my first sip and I couldn't even swallow because it was too sweet!! Usually, even though the food is bad, I rarely claim it to restaurant but this one was exception. It was like literally drinking 1 box of sugar. I told the waitress the iced tea is wayyyyy too sweet and she asked if I wanted cancel. I said I dont want to cancel but would be nice if she could add more tea or milk to less sweeten the drink. Overall, I dont think I go back to this place. It was wayy below my expectation. I know LA people are spoiled with authentic foods, but I honestly had better ones in other cities too. read more

We are staying at a hotel in Sherman Oaks, and after a week and a half on the go, I had no desire to get my 4 kids out to eat while my husband was at a conference. We found this restaurant on line and I was thrilled I was able to order on line as well. Tying to order food with four kids screaming in the background while you try to order is not a fun experience. The delivery was on time, the food was correct, and the delivery guy was very polite. We got the satay, fried tofu, pineapple fried rice, and cashew tofu. Everything was really good, and with generous portions. Much better than the $$$ room service we got this morning! read more
