I was really excited to learn that they opened up. I live close by and am super stoked to have a great sushi place within walking distance again. I order from Yoshio all the time and the menu is the same. The food is really good quality and fresh. I ordered online for pick up and my food was ready and waiting for me when I walked up. Mandatory surcharge in September 2022. 18 percent. Mandatory for two folks. And the really bad part is that it is very small print on their menu. THEN when you pay with a card it asks you to tip, and if your not paying attention you might tip. Here is the real rub....the wait staff said the service charge is so I don't have to worry about tipping. Then they stammered and said it was for cleaning supplies. JOKE! The place is nasty dirty. The menu was stained, the table was sticky and the cushions in the booth were visibly dirty. WILL NOT be going here again anytime soon and will be warning my fiends about his place. My mom and I tried this "new" sushi place in the Pacific East Asian mall the other night. After Kamza closed two years ago, I noticed Kaoru opened in this space to small fanfare a little over a month ago. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic that hit just as they were getting ready to open, I guess the ownership needed to make adjustments. The dining area are now tables situated in the hallway of the mall with very limited seating inside. You need to order, pay first to the lady at the counter, and then seat yourself. The food is brought over to you in to go packaging later. The food we ordered consisted of a bento set, entree, and their special fried futomaki. The food was not actually bad; reminiscent to Sushi House in Alameda. The interior of the restaurant was remodeled to a more darker wood motif to emulate a izakaya atmosphere. Hopefully when the pandemic is over, Kaoru will transform into a very lively and busy hangout. However for now, the service is so so , and the staff was not very personable. We really miss Katsumi San and his crew that worked here when Kamza was still in business, but I'll still come back here for the food. read more

I found this restaurant on Yelp and showed up 40 minutes before they closed. The server told me that they ran out of rice and could not get seated. I was sitting outside of the restaurant browsing where to go and saw how a party of 3 got seated. I went and asked how come they got seated and I wasn't with my family (minor included). Went there on a whim while exploring the mall. Had some shisamo for the first time per my friend's recommendation and it was stellar. They also call it the pregnant fish and the two color dry rub for it was one of a kind. Dragon roll was on point and the nigiri deluxe had good portions of fish on top. Nice thick cuts and you can tell the fish was as fresh as can be. Would come again. They can handle large parties as well. read more

So the sushi by itself is good, would order again. The hot plates, mediocre. However, this is a soft opening and they are still working out how serving should go. It took several attempts to get our server's attention and there was a lack of basic knowledge about Japanese food. When we left, there was nobody on the floor - not a sushi chef, server...nobody. We also saw our server run out to pet a dog, come back, and start handling to go boxes and serving settings without washing her hands. Basic restaurant serving 101. The interior is impressive and someone clearly knew what they were doing, wish the service matched that. For now, just order to go until they get their stuff together. Came during lunch and ordered a California roll and a Spicy Hamachi roll. They were both pretty good, and definitely very good value being priced at $5 and $6 respectively. I would describe this sushi as good, not great, you definitely get what you pay for. They do slice their pieces very thick, I only got six pieces per roll but again, they were almost uncomfortably thick. Very good value, good quality; will probably be my go-to budget sushi when I'm in the area. read more

We got rolls and they were very fresh, and we were actually able to taste the fish because some places give very thin portion on toppings to the point that the food only tastes like spicy mayo/soy sauce. I was there a few weeks ago. Not only do the prices keep going up (probably due to inflation), but they recently added a 18% "service charge" to the bill (even though there was only 2 in the party) which I didn't even notice until my friend pointed it out. According to the law, they are supposed to let you know about it before you order (which they did not do). I decided to treat the service charge as a tip and therefore added no additional tip. The food is pretty good, but I think this is an underhanded and unfair and probably unlawful. read more

We can on Sunday at about 2.40pm. There were still 80% full. We thought it was good sign. However when the edamame and one roll arrived at about 3.10pm, I realized it is not as good as the yelpers recommended. The edamame were not fresh, there was even icy chips in couple of them. We ordered three rolls, one arrived at about 3.00pm. We still waiting for the other two at 3.31pm right now. The second roll arrived at 3.32pm, without wasabi and ginger. The taste of sushi is fine, nothing outstanding, not bad either. At 3.38pm, we are still waiting for our third roll. read more

Came here with my hubby since we saw they had outdoor dining outside and actually tables inside the mall but outside of their restaurant and we have been craving some sushi. We came here around 7:30 and it wasn't too busy at all. They do close at 9:30 pm but I believe you have to put your order in by 8:00pm. So we ordered from the front and then paid for the food and sat ourselves at one of their tables in the mall area by the candy store. The food took about 20-30 minutes and they bring it out to you in to go containers which was convenient so if you wanted to take it home or just eat it there. We ordered the Lion Queen Roll, Philly Roll, Crunch Roll, and a sashimi plate. All the rolls were very large portions and were very tasty!! The Lion Queen was really good because instead of baked salmon it has baked spicy tuna which I found very tasty with a nice kick to it. My husband said his sashimi plate was good and that the fish tasted fresh. I'm glad this place has seating inside the mall as well as out doors.
