Decided to try a new ramen spot so my boyfriend suggested we try this one out! Upon arriving, the restaurant itself is very small. It was packed but thankfully there was a table open so I got seated right away. The seats are so small and cute. It was pretty hot in there. And they only had fans on the wall blowing and very little airflow soooo just kinda beware that it does get pretty hot and kinda stuffy in there. Anyways, my party ordered the kuro truffle ramen and the Karami signature. It was also happy hour and we tried out the spicy karage and spicy gyoza. KURO TRUFFLE- BOOOOOMBB!! The truffle wasn't overpowering the broth so it was really good all while still being able to taste the truffle flavor. I really like the noodles they use also. Reminds me of the fat noodle they used to have at tajima. The spicy gyoza and spicy karage, I would pass on next time. Not a big fan of the spicy sauce they used. A very quaint ramen shop tucked in the corner of the Nijiya Market plaza. It reminds me a lot of the Ramen shops I'd see in vlogs from Japan - a very homey vibe. I came with a friend around 7pm and it was pretty full but we didn't have to wait since there was room at the bar area. I ordered a iced green tea and Karami Ramen. My friend ordered the miso tonkatsu. I personally think that the Karami ramen was a bit salty for my tastes and didn't have a spicy taste at all even though it had red oil on top - so don't worry! But the taste was really good. They use a thicker type of wavy noodle which is actually my fav type. It also gave me nishiki vibes but with less decision anxiety. They also had some curry dishes but I was craving a warm hearty soup and that's what I got. The green tea was really refreshing with the broth. My friend really loved their miso ramen and even said it was probably her favorite ramen in all San Diego! I really enjoyed dining at Karami ramen. I have been here several times and always order the signature ramen, it's more of a Tokyo style chicken broth IMO. I was told by the owner it a chicken/pork broth base pre-covid. However, the menu now shows it's the tori paitan chicken broth base. Nonetheless, the ramen is fantastic and has a medium heaviness, as if you could eat it everyday unlike Tonkotsu. I don't know where they source their noodles from but they are great as well, especially when you order them al dente, picks up the soup perfectly. I did order the Aka Oni one time, and even though I put habanero hot sauce on everything in my house. The spicy ramen was tough for me to take without suffering. So, proceed with caution if you like to take on those challenges. With that said the ramen was super flavorful and wasn't just heat. I've been struggling to find my go to ramen place ever since Ramen Yamadaya closed and decided to check this place out when I was having a ramen craving. While I can't say this has replaced my old favorite place, this ramen shop is definitely a good contender. Their noodles have just the right level of chewy (I've tried other hyped up places like Ultra Menya to find the noodle texture too soggy) so this place is doing something right. The broth while tasty didn't wow me - I feel like they could have added more flavor... maybe some crushed garlic? Either way, this place is still tasty and affordable. One thing to note- if you order the small size (which I did for my son), be warned there is very little noodle (though it comes in a decently sized bowl). This place is the perfect place to go when everything on Convoy has a 1+ hr wait! The ramen is almost as good as other establishments such as Nishiki Ramen. They could improve on their noodle quality, but their broth is pretty spot on. You can order a side with your ramen for between $6-8 which is a great deal! It's average tasting to me. The broth is good and they have several ramen options to choose from. It's not my favorite but it will do if you don't want to wait at Tajima. I like the various spices and garlic flakes they have on every table. I think all ramen places should do this. read more

Went here with a couple friends on Friday (07/23). We always see this place and never have the chance to get in due to it being relatively busy, but this day there was immediate seating and we were seated right away. The single server in there was really friendly, getting us to a table and providing menus right away, she was attentive to all our needs or questions. The ambiance of the place is what you would expect from a Japanese ramen restaurant. It is in a small space, with limited tables, and extremely low back chairs, which are relatively small to my taller friends, but I found them comfortable enough. I ordered the Kuro Truffle ramen, garlic edamame, and the Gyoza. The Kuro Truffle ramen: full of what I describe as a buttery flavor broth, not super hot, but hot enough. The truffle mixed in made it very delicious. The noodles were nice in size and perfect texture and consistency. I could of used a little more noodles (slightly more), but this was still a good ramen dish. If you're looking for spice, don't get this bowl. The Garlic Edamame: perfectly cooked and seasoned generously with garlic. Nothing extra special, just an overall good garlic edamame. The Gyoza: I didn't do the combo, because I didn't order the Gyoza until after I had already put in my order, so I got the (6pc) single order. The filling was good on flavor, but I wish there was a little more of it. The gyoza was nice, but I wish there was more variety or options in the dipping sauce for it than what was provided. I can see myself coming back! This restaurant may not be big but it is big on flavors! They have 10 different ramen to choose from, categorized by classic, spicy, and special types. Average $10/bowl My friend and I decided on the Korean Shio ramen and Karami ramen, which is their signature. You can add (extra) chicken, pork, veggies and seafood for a few more dollars. Just a disclaimer: I eat spicy food often and my tolerance can be high so in my opinion, the ramen wasn't spicy hot at all for me but I'm not sure if the same would go for you. The broth did have a lot of flavor though and I could taste the Korean spices... I think there may have been Kim chi in it? Thankfully, they have Indian and Korean spices + dried garlic on each table which can really add a kick! I was so full and it was definitely worth $15. note that the ramen portion is half of what it's supposed to be if you order a lunch combo but you can upgrade the ramen to its actual size for +$3. would definitely come back again and take my friends here! read more

I hate being that person but we had to give the Karami signature a try. It did not disappoint. The portion sizes are perfect. Hmm, wanted to like this ramen shop based on the reviews but maybe it was an off night. To be fair my wife & older daughter thoroughly enjoyed their miso tonkotsu ramen. The gyoza was good but on the small side The service was great. I ordered the Thai spicy ramen and although it was spicy it lacked depth in the broth and it was a very thin broth. I didn't get that much ramen in my bowl. My younger daughter ordered the spicy curry tonkatsu. The spicy on the ramen was good but the tonkatsu was so tough we couldn't even bite into it. We mentioned it to the server and she quickly apologized and changed the tonkatsu to chicken karage based on our request. I encourage others to try because it maybe a one off when we went. "Karami" means "spicy" in Japanese so if spicy ramen is your forte then you will be in heaven. Fancy some "Triple Super Spicy" ramen to scorch your gut with? You got it! Prepared to sweat your balls off from your choice of chili pepper (Indian, habanero, or Korean)? It's all yours! Others are insane enough to relish such astronomical levels of heat, but I on the other hand prefer to save my stomach lining from such abuse. That being said, they most certainly have traditional ramen WITHOUT the chili! There isn't any straight tonkotsu broth -- mostly shoyu, miso, and shio -- but there are some hybrid broths such as the *Miso Tonkotsu Ramen*, which is precisely what we ordered. Broth was so-so, had medium-thick texture, and was flavorful. Lots of choice toppings to fill you up with. The *Regular Curry with Pork Cutlet* was another enjoyable dish. It came in a HUGE bowl too! Pork cutlet pieces were fat and crunchy, breading was thin and light, rice was fluffy, and the curry sauce had a little kick to it with slices of onion and shreds of beef. SO filling and rich it was! I came here twice and enjoyed my ramen both times! First time I got the signature ramen. It wasn't that spicy but I enjoyed the broth and the noodles were a very good texture, not too soft/soggy or too hard. Their chashu is also very generously portioned. I got the Thai shoyu the second time which was nicely spicy and also very yummy. I think the signature was better but both were really good. I ordered karaage as a side too and it was really crispy, very glad I got it! The service is also really great and they are really diligent about keeping outdoor dining clean and sanitary (they wipe after every customer!) as well as strict bathroom and social distancing protocols to ensure safety. We came here for lunch yesterday and our friends ordered some takoyaki before we arrived. I never had that before, so it was pretty interesting. The dough was very soft and there were diced octopus inside. It came with pickled ginger, which helped balance the sweetness of the sauce on top. Afterwards, the boys got their Asahi and then we chose our entrees. I chose the cha siu Shio, and the others opted for the butter corn shio combo with karaage don, and the triple super spicy combo with karaage. It didn't take too long for our food ramen to arrive, but the combo items did take a bit longer. My bowl didn't look spicy at all, but looks can be deceiving! Since they used habanero peppers, the broth didn't have that red coloring you normally see in spicy food. It was actually pretty flavorful and had a lot of heat, but good thing it didn't burn my mouth. The bowl it pretty huge as well- they surely give you lots of noodles! It's almost like eating two bowls. My husband's bowl was the hottest item on the menu and had a nice spicy flavor to it- they combined spices from India, Korea, and Mexico to create this extremely hot bowl of ramen. It looked pretty scary, but we could still handle it- no sweating or crying here LOL. The only other thing I had was the karaage, which had a nice, crispy texture and it was also very enjoyable. I came here on two occasions while visiting the San Diego area and highly recommend this ramen shop! The first time I ordered the karami signature with a side of chashu rice. The ramen broth was great and noodles were the perfect texture. Also, generous with the toppings as you can see from the picture. I would say it's a relatively mild spice, so if you just want a little bit of spice the signature is good for that! The second time I ordered the black truffle ramen and a side of karaage. Although I personally preferred the signature ramen, this one was very fragrant and pleasant! The karaage was crispy and juicy too. Located in the land of delicious Asian food in San Diego Convoy, Karami Raman is a flavorful spot and has a nice little nook outside that's perfect for an intimate conversation with a friend or two. I chose the Thai Shoyu, because I was interested in getting a fusion dish since I am very familiar was Thai cuisine. The Raman was very flavorful and had just enough spice, whereas it didn't overpower the broth's flavor. The pork was soft and savory, and the mushrooms added texture to the soup. This is my third time coming here and my go-to order is always the chicken katsu curry. I love spicy food, and this is the place I go if I'm craving spicy Japanese curry (they even have spicy chili pastes on the side now if it's not spicy enough for you). I've been waiting a long time for this ramen shop to open which is hidden in the corner of the retail center. Walking into the restaurant brought me back to an old school Asian noodle vibe restaurant. There were so many items on the menu that I wanted to try and luckily my wife and mom were there so we were able to order plenty of items off the menu that left me walking out way too full! We decided to order the ramen combinations to be able to try the most items off the menu. First combination was Spicy Seafood Shoyu Ramen with the Pork Curry with Rice. This was the extremely hot ramen with chili pepper from India. The soup was nice and spicy but not too rich. The pork curry with rice was delicious with a nice kick to it. Second combination was the very hot (chili pepper from Korea) spicy seafood shio ramen with fried rice. I enjoyed the Indian chili pepper flavored broth more than this one as it provided a tastier spicy kick that I tend to enjoy more than the korean chili pepper. The fried rice was flavorful and cooked with cha-shu and was not too oily. The third combination we ordered was a traditional non-spicy shio seafood ramen with the mini eel don. If you come here, definitely order their specialty spicy ramen's. But the mini eel don was the highlight of my dinner. The eel pieces were nice, tender and large but they could have added a bit more sauce to the rice. The gyoza was also nicely pan-fried and hot. All three of us liked the gyoza. To be honest, the ramen was only ok as I like my soup base and ramen noodles a bit more flavorful and chewy. today I went to this restaurant with some friends and it was my first time eat at this restaurant and I like the ramen here already and of course with the reasonable price and their broth is actually based on chicken and I was like that is new actually I've never had ramen that based on chicken broth but it was actually good, not to mention that their service was awesome too from the moment I stepped into the restaurant we had sit already. This is a hidden gem worth looking for. In 2019, Karami Ramen won the People's ChoiceAward at the 2019 San Diego Ramen Festival. Then, COVID-19 hit and the Ramen Festival went on a 2 year hiatus. This year, the 2022 San Diego Ramen Festival will be held Nov 10th. Interestingly. Karami Ramen was able to hold onto the trophy all this time and will returned the trophy this year. I hope they win again!!! Because of their simple menu, this allows the ramen chefs to concentrate on providing authentic Japanese ramen which will transport you to old Japan. Everything is delicious here, but, my go to ramen is the Kuro Truffle: An aromatic flavor of black truffle mixed into the chicken broth served with 2 slices of pork chashu, egg, cabbage, bamboo shoots, naruto & green onion.
