There was a line before this place even opened so I think a lot of people quite often feel a little Polish in Greenpoint. In any case, standard fare to be had here. They have big portions for tiny prices so I'm giving them the nod. But one dish did really stand out. The white borscht served in bread was an excellent dish- I'd eat that every day if I could. I love everything about this restaurant and I ate leftovers for 3 days. We had the pickle soup which can easily be split between two people, a plate of pierogies, Polish classic plate, and the blood sausage and two cocktails. Absolutely couldn't get through it all between the both of us so took it home for breakfast and the next days lunch. These were the biggest pierogies I've ever seen. The Polish sampler plate was great and it pains me to see sub par reviews because it's the whole reason I came there. My stomach can't handle this place. My friend and I both had cramps and stomachaches immediately after our meal, but maybe this was due to our unfamiliarity to such high fat cuisine because we sure enjoyed our meal. The white borscht was salty, sour, rich, and HUGE. It was delicious and I'd recommend it if you're like me and love salt and vinegar. The mashed potato was silky smooth and so satisfying I'd even order it alone. It's not seasoned much, so don't expect a creamy, peppery mixture. You'll need all of it + the bread bowl to temper the strength of the soup. The lard appetizer was probably our favorite because it was packed with flavor. I'm sure our stomachs didn't appreciate the fat overload, but the dense bread and gherkins were good accompaniments to break up the oiliness. We also split a lackluster order of Polish Specialties. The pierogies were too thick-skinned while the potato pancakes were very gummy/cakey and drenched in oil. I was expecting something similar to latkes, now I know I need to try more placki (assuming this was one). The kielbasa was about the length of my thumb and only half of a cylinder (so I guess they're rationing). I really enjoyed my first two bites of the stuffed cabbage, after which I grew tired of so much meat filling. Of all these items, the hunter stew was the only one not to disappoint. It had bits of meat and veggies with a slightly tart/sweet tomato-y sauce. I suggest only order that and skip the rest. I can't stress enough that if you're not used to a high red meat or animal fat diet, you should share the dishes you order. We had 1 app, 1 soup, and 1 main which we regret finishing on our own. Would have been better to share with 4 people. The old world décor is charming--especially the wishing well in the center of the back dining area. Be warned that children will regularly wander up to toss coins or hang out around the frame, so it can get lively. Very Hearty! Large portions. The cabbage rolls are huge and delicious just like my family makes. The Perogies are available boiled, more traditional or fried. Mine were fried a little a tad to long but I also prefer boiled than fried. The Kielbasa is excellent! They dress in traditional polish wear and you must try the apple pie drink!!! We came in for dinner on Friday night to find the restaurant completely filled. Luckily, there was a short wait, so we started off at the bar. I had a Hofbrau Dunkel and then a grzaniec - a polish mulled beer with honey and cinnamon. I'd recommend trying the grzaniec. We started with the white borscht. It was the perfect warmer on a cold night. The soup is served in a bread bowl which makes the dish very filling. It's definitely ideal to share it. For the main course, we shared the polish platter which had pierogies, kielbasa, latkes, and stuffed cabbage. The platter is a great way to sample several polish specialities. Amazing traditional polish food - such a hidden gem! I usually wouldn't think to try Polish food as 90% of the people I hang out with are Asian, but my co-workers took me here for lunch and this has become one of my favorite restaurants in New York! Restaurant has a rustic atmosphere with wooden tables and benches, with the waitresses dressed in traditional dresses. Lunch specials are such a great value - Lunch Plate with Soup at only $10.50 and the portions are huge. I love the White borscht soup - which comes with mashed potatoes on the side. My kind of food! There are about 6-7 lunch dishes to choose from. I really enjoyed the Stuffed cabbage with Polish kielbasa or 3 pierogis, and Polish kielbasa with hunter stew. So flavorful and tasty! Can be a little heavy for lunch - but they provide boxes if you want to pack the rest to go. Outside of the lunch options I recommend the plate of barbecue for two or three people - it is a meat lover's heaven! It comes with (Sausage, white sausage, black pudding, pork, skewers of chicken and pork, salmon, chicken breast, bacon) and only for $27 total! I couldn't believe it. As someone totally unfamiliar with polish food I was skeptical when my friends wanted to check this place out, but I'm so glad that I did. Not unlike Ukranian food, they have a nice selection of dishes even those of us that are not adventurous can enjoy. An Eastern european at our table knew ahead of time she was ordering the cold borscht and she loved it along with her blintzes. I went with the stuffed cabbage; huge serving for less than $15 bucks and it included buttery fluffy homemade mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. The cabbage rolls themselves were pretty standard but the tomato sauce they were bathed in tasted like it had simmered for hours on babushka's stove. So rich and flavorful, it tasted fabulous mixed in with the mashed potatoes. Other people ate our table got various pork chop dishes and everyone left with full bellies and satisfied. I seriously do not understand why this place has such high ratings. I took my fiancé there, hoping to impress him with what my cuisine has to offer, and was disappointed. He had the Polish platter and I could tell he was far from being impressed. He honestly thought that he was served wrong king of pierogi (I had to confirm that it was not the case, but not before taking a bite), the cabbage used for golabek was a shroud of mush, and bigos was nothing to write home about, either. My Tatar steak was bland despite all the spices/condiments I used to inject some life into it. Tripe soup (which I had) was - oddly enough - pretty good, but not enough to make us want to return. Management should do something about intoxicated Polish people who use profanities while on premises, and are not afraid to say them out loud. I was ashamed of my former countrymen. read more

The closest that I have come to authentic and tasty Polish food here in the city. The staff is friendly - saw some comments to the contrary, but found that if you are friendly, so are they. Very efficient, very clean, very personable. Food was very good. Come hungry, because you'll probably take some food home with you - the portions are great. Once upon a time, a starving student spent entire summers in Warsaw suburbs painting canvas for sale and cooking polish food for construction crew in exchange for roof over her head. It's all the good stuff you would want to try in one order - pierogis, potato placki/pancakes, kielbasa, a bit of stew and of course, rolled/stuffed cabbage leaves - love those! I got the White Borscht Soup which was served in a bread bowl. Do you eat the bowl? I felt shameful to eat it. It also came with mashed potatoes with bacon chunks, not the typical bacon you'd expect, but in cubes. The beer I got, the dark beer. "Well that's very helpful!" Well, I can't pronounce these Polish labeled beers so I specifically looked for a beer that said DARK in the description. So I recommend that one. Here's where you'll find some good Polish home cooking. My husband has a penchant for the Polish stuff. Oh believe me, I like it too, but it's definitely more his kind of comfort food than mine. So, my mission was to take the ole boy to Karczma for some of his-style soul food, hoping that he'd like it as much as I had when last I visited some years ago. By the way, I like how I'm acting as if I took him anywhere, as actually he got us there and paid for the meal. By "take," I mean the credit, of course. Almost nothing makes me happier and/or insufferably smug than enjoying a dinner based on my recommendation... and then forcing adulation outta people by frequently remarking, "Was I right, or WHAT?" I take credit. I exacted heaps of praise for this one, I did. I'd return for the pickle soup alone. It's deliciously sour with plenty of dill, and still less than three dollars for a nice hot bowl. The portions here are hearty and inexpensive, which easily lends itself to a quickly becoming a feasting situation, and of course that's just what we did. Homemade pierogies were tasty in each variety: mushroom, meat, and potato and cheese. My favorite was the potato and cheese style, but the earthiness of the mushroom dumpling was a very close second. The kielbasa was everything that you'd want it to be. I wouldn't pass up the Hunter's Stew, Ukrainian borscht, blood sausage, or stuffed cabbage, either. Suddenly you're not in Greenpoint; it's a rustic Polish farmhouse in the country, when you walk through Karczma's door. The inside of the restaurant is entirely wooden with thatched roof accents, folk art, a wishing well, and beautiful Polish girls dressed in traditional costume. All of these things may instantly signal a skeptical, "Hmm. Olde Worldy gimmick?" Really, it's adorable and very comfortable. Most importantly, the food is so good and authentic. When you're surrounded by the sounds of Polski being spoken by patrons young and the old, feel assured that you're in the right place for homey Polish food and drink. Being that I am Polish, I had to stop in Green Point and experience some of my favorite parts of my culture which is the food. We ended up ordering way too much from excitement which I deeply regretted. I tried all 3 soups (chicken noodle, borscht and pickle), salmon tartar, potato pancakes, stuffed mushrooms (which are not really polish) and goulash (also not a typically polish meal). From the soups, the borscht is the winner as the chicken noodle soup needed some salt and I always hated pickle soup. The potato pancakes were larger than I am use to but also very good. The salmon tartar was amazing and the goulash was tough and not spicy at all. Special shout out goes to the warm beer and warm wine which were perfect for the cold weather. I love Polish food. I love Polish food even though it makes me feel sick and awful the next day. Detroit may be King of it outside of Poland what with Hamtramck, our national Paczki day (fat Tuesday). I kid you not, my Dad has and still calls me Paczki, even though that is the plural form of Paczek since I was born. So when little Howie asked a huge group of friends to come on down to Greenpoint to gorge ourselves on pierogi, I could not object. I rushed here after the Yelp Event on the upper east side and ordered the Plate of Polish Specialties. This thing is ENORMOUS. It comes with a stuffed cabbage roll the size of your head and submerged in a light tomato sauce. The ground lamb (I believe) inside is a little bit on the cold side, I didn't finish this one. Hunter's stew: A half a Polish kielbasa sausage submerged in a very thick sauce of stewed tomatoes, honey, mushrooms, pork, beef, sometimes venison, with sauerkraut and red cabbage. Its possibly one of the most rich and decadent things I have ever tasted in my life. You will never be the same person ever again after trying this dish. The sampler platter also comes with three pierogi: mushroom, beef, and cheese potato. I think I liked the mushroom the best because it was the most savory. Not the best pierogi I have ever had in my life but it tastes home-made and the fillings were definitely poofed in with tender loving care. To top it off were two round discs of latke. They were cooked perfectly. It's hard to mess up a latke and came with a decadent mound of sour cream. Mind you, this dish is enough to last you for about 4 days. Or at least for me and it is so worth the money because all of this cost me only $11. Tons of Czech and Polish beers on tap that I could not muster the strength to try after and before all of this food. But a wonderful place to check out! Try to get reservations before hand because it gets very crowded but its a cozy spot and all of the waitresses wear pretty awesome traditional Polish folk dresses. read more

I was very tempted to mark this place as 5 stars. REAL close. But I'll explain later in the review why they are a strong 4.5 stars. The restaurant itself is located within a 20 second walk from the G train subway stop. I'd call that pretty convenient. Of course the G train is not running until February 2015 which isn't convenient. But you can still get out here via shuttle bus. The SPACE is as many Yelpers stated, like a farmhouse. However, I'd might say that the setting is more like a really small German beer bar without the extensive list of beer. They do serve about 5 or 6 beers in this place. They have wooden benches and tables that seat 6 people comfortably and I'd estimate that they have 9 table sets in the place so 45 people if everyone is a group of 6. Most parties that came in as I was eating was within the 3-4 party range. The bar can accommodate about seating for 6 people total. The lights were on the dimmer side to create that I know what I'm eating but then there is also that I probably should use the light on my phone to double check. Yeah, it was pretty dim lit. The A/C also was on as far as I know but I could barely feel the conditioned air from where I was sitting which was 10 feet from the entrance which is where the A/C was blowing from. I can tell this place would be cozy during the winter season. SERVICE wise was a bit on the slower side. I was press for time due me eating on a lunch break on work time so my perception of slow service that night might have been accentuated. Nonetheless, this is definitely one of those places that you can take your time and not be rushed out. The waitresses were very cordial and mine in particular took the time to explain what everything was on the Speciality of Poland or just Polish Platter which they could have just simply named it. The waitresses were mostly on the attractive side including the female manager who guided me to my seat as I first entered the eatery. The FOOD was AMAZE BALLS. The stuff cabbage was presented like a big burrito. It was oh so tender and flavorful. There were 3 kinds of pierogies. The meat, cheese, and veggie pierogies ALL WERE GOOD. There is no wrong choice here. 2 potatoe pancakes fried beautifully and crispy but with a tender texture. The kielbasa, one word YUM. There was also this thick sauce with sausage and chopped veggies which I do not know the name of. Also, delicious. This was all on ONE PLATE. Did I mention that I love Polish food? No? Well I do now. DRINK wise all I had was the Mckenzie's Hard Cider which is one of the best apple cider that I've tasted. Probably second to Angry Orchard and Original Sin. Great choice with your meal. Very enjoyable experience for dinner. We love borscht so we started with the white borscht in a bread bowl and the chilled red borscht. Both had excellent flavor and were large portions for very little money. If you can believe it, both soups were served with a side of mashed potato. These were very filling appetizers so we decided to share one entree - the plate of polish specialties. For $13, this consisted of three pierogis, two potato pancakes, hunters stew, kielbasa and a stuffed cabbage in fantastic sweet tomato sauce. Everything was delicious and we were absolutely stuffed. My ancestors would feel betrayed. I'm much more of a leafy greens girl then a boiled meats and potatoes one. But recently, on National Pierogi Day, I knew that I had to skip the salads and hit up Karczma for some fried, oily potato goodness. A coworker and I entered the Polish oasis and you will be pleased to hear that they don't skip on frills. The waitresses are dressed in traditional folk dresses and practically everything on the menu is less than $15. We ordered a plate of pierogis (mixed), potato pancakes, and kielbasa (of course). Everything was delicious. From the fried, to the sautéed, to the boiled. The kielbasa reminded me of Saturday morning breakfasts with dad. The snap of the outer skin, perfect with a spicy mustard. Served with a heaping pile of onions in some kind of wine sauce.The pierogis were just right. The outer shell not too doughy, stuffed with plenty of meat filling. I'll definitely visit Karczma again. When you go, you MUST order the white borscht. It's essentially heaven served in a bread bowl. Before the meal, we also ordered the mushroom pierogis. It was diced up mushrooms served with what the waiter called sauerkraut (I would have called it onions). They were sweet with a tad bit of a sour taste, and absolutely delicious. For my entree, I had the spicy beef goulash served over potato pancakes. The entree was enough for at least two people. Again, this was remarkable. I came here on a Saturday evening around 6 pm and put my name down for a group of 3. The wait for a table was about 45 minutes. From what I understand, this place is always busy. Going earlier is probably a good idea since it isn't all that large. The beers are huge and all the prices are super reasonable. We ended up sharing a few appetizers and left really stuffed. I'd definitely go again and maybe try one of the full entrees. They have tons of delicious-sounding options. The reason I'm giving 4 stars is because it seemed like we were waiting a bit longer than others for our food. I'm sure everything is made to order, which increases wait times. It came with two 8 oz pork shoulders, basic fries, grilled zucchini and bell peppers with a side of BBQ sauce. The pork was seasoned as if it was steak! The plate was large and the meat was DELICIOUS. ($11.50) We also ordered the sampler plate which consisted of traditional polish apps like the potato pancake, hunters stew, stuffed cabbage, and pierogis.
