We visited our favorite restaurant with a party of five adults and one baby and were disappointed--not by the wait itself, but by how it was communicated. We live in Northern CA and love to eat here whenever we're in town. Sadly, we will never return. The female employee told us the restaurant "can't accommodate" our party and said she didn't know how long it would be before we could be seated. As a former hostess, I understand how seating works and that a larger party and 2-3 smaller parties often means a longer wait, especially if a large group was just seated. That's completely reasonable. What was frustrating was the wording. Saying you "can't" accommodate guests implies unwillingness rather than a temporary delay. A clearer and more professional response would have been something like, "We won't have an available table for about 45 minutes to an hour." That sets expectations honestly and respectfully. Restaurants don't always have immediate availability, and most patrons understand that, me especially--but how the message is delivered absolutely matters. Better communication would have made this a much more positive interaction and guaranteed we would return. read more

The food itself hasn't changed much in 7 years since my last review, however it does seem like the rolls are a bit smaller. As for the service... If anything, that has gotten worse. The sushi chefs greet us upon arriving & thanked us when leaving. The waitress wasn't attentive at all! She dropped off the last plate to our table of 4 & it seemed as though she kind of literally "dropped" it off & abruptly walked away. We didn't even have chopsticks & she didn't ask if we needed anything else. Only came back once, very quickly to kind of check on us & that was at the end of our meal. So it didn't really matter if we needed anything. It seems as though their to-go orders take priority over their seated patrons because the service is VERY slow. The sushi here is very good. One of the best in town. I appreciate all of the options, so I can find ones that work for my allergies. As for speed of service, I recommend ordering it to-go unless you have a lot of time on your hands. Eating in, sushi is very slow to arrive. They seem to prioritize all of the many to-go orders, rather than making food for their customers eating in. The waitresses are also inattentive and slow. Between waiting for a waitress to take our order (despite us already knowing what we wanted to order before we were even seated), and then our sushi coming out, it was almost 2 hours. I ordered the 12-piece spicy tuna, crunchy roll, yellowpena roll, teriyaki chicken and an order of vegetable tempura. The Good: presentation was OK. The vegetable tempura was OK and met expectations? I didn't expect a quarter of an onion to be a piece of tempura and I didn't expect a tennis ball size of broccoli either. That's a sushi restaurant first for me in 40 years. The teriyaki chicken tasted ok but looked more like Chinese food with broccoli, carrots, onion, bell pepper, and zucchini mixed into the chicken. And that's the GOOD? The Bad: The sushi was on par with the poorest quality sit down restaurant or average fast food quality sushi. I've never had spicy tuna that tasted like it was made with bottled Sriracha in a roll before. The yellow tail on the yellowpeno roll wasn't seared like it states on the menu and it didn't melt in your mouth like you would expect from sushi grade fish. I also expected the jalapeños to be sliced thinner and put on each piece of the role. Instead, there was a soup spoon pile of it in the center of the to-go container. Avocados must've been in season because it was in all three of my rolls. I don't know what to say because I haven't tried the other two sushi restaurant/bars in Tehachapi yet. But coming from coastal Orange County, the quality of this food would put this restaurant out of business in six months. RECAP: Three rolls, teriyaki chicken and vegetable tempura for $95, no drink and no 20% tip for dine-in because it was to go. Also, prices are not advertised on the menu and you don't know what you're paying until after they ring you up. SB-478 California DOJ requires that the restaurant advertise pricing. The law specifically states that no restaurant is allowed to advertise a price less than a consumer would pay or no price at all. If a particular menu item has a price that may fluctuate because of a particular good/ingredient then the menu must state something to that affect. read more

This is the best sushi in Tehachapi. The food is usually great. The soft shell crab is my favorite. I think it's best as a hand roll. But I tried something different yesterday and it's just meh: the uramaki veggie roll. It had shredded diakon, cucumber, lettuce, and slightly pickled raw carrot. The raw carrot is off putting because texturally it's so much harder than the rest of the veggies. It would have been much better with a piece of steamed kabocha instead. I won't order it again, but I'll be back to Kasagiri for sure. Their tempura is good: the kabocha tempura is delightful. Hubs usually gets a bento box combination dinner. read more

I figure it's for using my credit card which I think is just their cost of doing business and I've been known to boycott places that do this in the past.. I can't believe it's been 11 years since I reviewed the first time. At that time I did not eat sushi, I didn't know what I was missing. It is requested every year for a birthday. Food is good and taste fresh. Make sure to order the avocado tempura it is delicious. They are open for lunch and then close until 5 for dinner. read more

I visited with both my adult daughters, and was immediately greeted by friendly staff and incredible service. The restaurant was clean and organized. My daughters and I ordered bento boxes. We shared each other's food and tasted everything we ordered ranging from yellowtail sashimi, sushi rolls, fried tempura. We had edamame and sake as well. For dessert we had the green tea mochi, not a drop was left. By the end of our meals we were planning our next visit. If you live in town or you're coming to visit, you MUST stop to eat at this Jewel. We are definitely coming back!!! read more

We have been craving sushi since we moved up here and Kasagiri didn't disappoint! Loved that it's been family owned and still run since 1991! All of the food was exceptional. Food is the best in town. Service is always on point. The people who work there are the friendliest. The decor is the same as when they opened the restaurant probably 20+ years ago. I bet that if they asked their loyal customers, who love their food, to come and help redo their place, they would get a lot of people. Sushi Virgin The Kasagiri Japanese Restaurant was recommended by a business associate to try promoting that it had to be the best sushi restaurant he's ever eaten at. Problem is, I'm a meat and potatoes kind-a-guy. It took me a long time to delve into Korean, Vietnamese and Thai food, but they are now on my favorites list. Never wanted to try sushi as the thought of eating raw fish never appealed to me but I thought if I ever were to try, I may as well try what sounded like the best of the best. I explained to my waitress, Kiara, that I was a Virgin to sushi and that I had no idea what to choose from the extensive list of items on the menu. After a short discussion on my flavor preferences, she recommended the garlic albacore roll, the rainbow roll and the crunchy roll along with a starter salad which I ordered along with the house on-tap beer. Oh My God...., was this delicious! By far the best meal I've had on my two week business trip. Always a little scary losing your virginity, but for me, I know I'll be keeping my eye out for the next great sushi experience. Thanks to Kiki for helping me though my first experience. Best sushi. Had my 30th anniversary today and just as fantastic as always. The Baja roll is awesome. As is the sushi taco appetizer. And the sushi lunch. Always top notch. I won't go anywhere else. Dined at Kasagiri last night for Valentine's Day with dinner reservations. It took about an hour and a half, at minimum, from the time we ordered until we got our complete meal. Food was trickling out very slowly. By the time we got our sushi, we were so frustrated by the poor service! Bottom line is they focused more on the take-out orders than on their dine-in customers. Boxes and boxes and boxes of food were seen being picked up as we waited and waited and waited. Never again! read more

Overpriced and not authentic. I'm not racist by any means, but when the entire sushi chef staff is Hispanic, it's just not the same. Their rolls are also weird and use different ingredients for rolls that should not be messed with. Beers are like $10 for a small. I really do love this place. Very busy always, lots of community love and support here. Food is great!! Kitchen appears clean as far as I can see! Dinning area and bathrooms is in severe need of updating but has a certain local charm. Miso soup, tempura, avacado/veggie bowl, chicken bowl. All delish!!! Packed with flavor and all you need. I always leave full and happy! Kirin beer is here among others. Super tasty and I'm a huge fan of Kirin. Service is polite but rapid as most employees are very busy. The flow of people does not seem to stop. In fact just before open there was s line forming g to get in!! Many people that came in while I was waiting had a reservation....smart! They were seated right away. I waited maybe 15 minutes which I would do over and over again. The bathrooms really do need an upgrade but it's well worth it for the quality of food. I'm honestly shocked to see all of the good reviews for this place. The service is terrible, the place is dirty, the menu has no prices listed for any of the rolls, its more expensive than the other sushi restaurants in town (and lower quality), they charge you if you use a credit card, the wait took forever, they messed up our bill and then reluctantly fixed it, the servers were very unprofessional. Seriously the list goes on and on. We'll never return again. Thankfully we still have Ichiban!!! Save yourself the time and money, and choose another place to treat yourself to! :) read more

Probably the worst sushi place I've been to and I've been regularly eating sushi at many restaurants, in many different places, for 25 years. If I had to guess, this place is cheaply run by someone, who is not Japanese, to try and cash in on the popularity of Japanese cuisine. Poorly replicating well known rolls and then attempting to put their own "spin" on it and making it bad. Badly rolled rolls stuffed with inexpensive ingredients like cucumber so all you taste is cucumber. Rolls were loose and way too big to eat. The Super Philadelphia roll was just a California roll with cream cheese and salmon on top. Okay but so much cucumber I had to take most of it out. The caterpillar roll had spicy tuna (as did almost all of the rolls) and I found maybe one piece of eel. Avocado wasn't ripe, just rock hard. My husband had pork cutlet in panko breadcrumbs with "BBQ sauce" that tasted like A1. The only thing Asian about it was the panko. Tasted like something cooked for a church fair by an old lady in the 80's. Daughter had ramen with severely over cooked, unflavored pork. To top it all off it's the most expensive sushi place I've ever eaten at. The Ramen was $18! There are no prices, on the menu, for sushi and when we got the bill discovered they were also $18 each. That's crazy. Do not recommend, at all. Only reason I didn't give 2 stars is because the servers were nice. Go to either Midori or Ichiban. read more

Best Seaweed salad I've ever had. There's was care and consideration for the taste buds when this recipe was made. We ordered a special roll that we named the Chorda Tympani, (the nerve in the tongue that controls taste buds), because it hit all of our taste buds like a bang! Sashimi was fresh based on flavor and texture, and the sauce for the albacore was complimentary to the fish it was served with. So we pulled up to this restaurant, and it was small inside, luckily we got there before the rush. My wife ordered 2 baked rolls and I ordered a sushi burrito. I ordered my sushi burrito with soy paper but they gave me seaweed paper. They remade it for me and I asked no rice this time in the burrito. They came back with the smallest burrito, which tells me most of the burrito was filled with rice. The ratio was not good. The fish wasn't fresh. My wife's baked rolls were disgusting and the salmon was dry on it. Our friends ordered the ramen, which was good. They also ordered rolls and it was bland with no flavor. It was returned. We also ordered the kids fried rice and that was delicious. The kids fried rice is different than the adults fried rice, which wasn't that good. The customer service wasn't good and the sushi chef kept mad dogging us and staring the whole time because we sent back two rolls. Felt very uncomfortable. Won't return read more

All in all, there wasn't anything good about eating here. It was like if someone had eaten grocery store sushi once and described it to someone who'd never heard of sushi, and then that person decided to open a restaurant based on that description. The quality wasn't good and didn't taste fresh at all. The salmon *looked* slimy, and gave my gf some stomach issues for the next day or so. I didn't eat any of it because of the way it looked. At least the tuna and hamachi, as subpar as it was, didn't make me physically feel bad. They chose weird/unconventional vegetables for the tempura. One of them was frozen broccoli florets, which doesn't really make sense because fresh broccoli is cheaper. FOH was understaffed, and impacted the quality of service. It's forgivable to the servers themselves, but reflects poorly on the management of this place. Our specific server was new and in training. She was a high school kid and had good intentions. She was nice and polite, but not up to speed (again, not her fault that management let her loose when she needed more training). It was loud and chaotic when it didn't need to be. There were chairs in the restroom and one of the BOH guys was just sitting there in a chair playing games on his phone. He could've been on break, but hanging out in the bathroom isn't a good look. I usually go to Midori but I like to give all the restaurants a fair shot. Midori's is probably the best sushi I've ever had, and this place is just as good! The staff are all super nice including the chefs who greeted me from the sushi bar when I came in to make my To-Go order. The waitress who took my order was super friendly and patient and walked me through the menu and gave great service. Overall my experience was amazing and I will definitely be back soon! read more
