Last night was my first time at Katana -- was very excited to experienced, just for the vibes of the sushi boats. The place has a maximum of 25 seats, so the wait time is serious. I made the trek from Shenandoah area to their location in time to add my name to their waitlist at 6:56pm -- the wait time was 90mins on dot. We killed time nearby at Bob's only to return maybe 30mins before our call time to find that the wait list had 2 additional pages...ppl seem to like the place a lot. We finally sat down and started the indulgence..or so I had hoped...honestly, not a lot of variety on those little boats. Yes--the wait was real (we were quoted 2-3 hours), but it ended up being 100% worth it. This place is an experience, not just dinner. Watching the sushi come around on the boats felt like literally having Instagram reels play out in real life--except it's fresh, beautifully presented food right in front of you. The quality and vibe honestly gave "Michelin-level experience" without the Michelin-level price tag. What really stood out, though, was the hospitality. Love this place. The only downside is the wait time but it adds to the notoriety and experience. Expect to be jam packed next to anyone stranger and if you're in a large group this isn't the place. I love the experience of it though. It's unlike any other place in Miami. Little boats pass you with plates of sushi made right before your eyes. The option to order anything you don't see pass you made fast and fresh. Quick service and mostly friendly staff. Only thing I can say is last time I went with a friend and at the time to pay the server showed me the bill on her handheld POS and made the comment that I had to pay in US dollars and they don't take pesos. this is my third time coming to this place and actually making it past the wait time! i will say, it is very worth the wait, i think we waited about an hour and 15 mins and were immediately sat, they are very good about turning tables. i didn't get the names of the two ladies who served us but they were very sweet!! all the sushi, sashimi, and nigiri tasted so fresh. they have appetizers, hand rolls, the best thai donuts, and so much more. i would go online and look at their menu to really have the best experience, every plate on the boats are priced differently, and i think the portions are perfect. the sushi chef is baiscally whipping all these sushi's out in front of you and it's like having dinner and a show. while there isn't any music and it's a pretty quiet ambience, there's lots of conversation going on which makes me feel like it's more of an experience than just dinner. they're open from 6pm - 12 am everyday, so accommodate for a possible 2 hour wait time. i'm definitely coming back, i love it here !! read more

What a great experience I came with a friend who's been here a few times we got here at 6:30 and even though they just opened it was still an hour wait there's a bunch of restaurants around where you can grab drinks. They call you when your seats are ready Once we saw it you can grab food right away since the boats never stopped going by so you don't have to wait for food, which is great. You can order from a server whatever you don't see on a boat they have a specials menu and then also some cooked food you can order. Our server/sushi man was amazing. Great recommendations super on point it was loud but because everybody was conversing I'm not even sure there was music playing. There is a 75 minute limit, which is more than enough, but they do fill up very very quickly. read more

Our first visit and it was great. We had an amazing time. John was very attentive even though the place was packed. Mika ( I think is her name) was adorable. Everyone was friendly. We were aware it would be a very casual place. We were prepared for a long wait. We went next door to Bob's and they called when the table was ready. The food was very fresh. The staff was in constant motion and so aware of what everyone needed. Tables turned over quickly and the staff did an amazing job at keeping things moving and clean despite the place being packed. What a fun experience! Sushi and other Japanese foods floating to your picking experience? Sign me up again and again. It's like strawberry picking, except sushi! Katana is a hole in the wall type spot that is sure to challenge your patience and hunger. What I mean is that they don't play around with their waitlist! It seems to me the most important thing to consider when coming to Katana is that you arrive early enough to put your name on the list or be comfortable experiencing a bit of a wait. What I like is that they'll call you when your spot is ready so you don't necessarily need to wait inside or outside but you definitely need to wait nearby so that you don't lose your spot. When I went, I grabbed a beer at a dive bar just a few stores down which was a great way to pass the time. I would say Katana is a great place for solo dining or a fun, casual date. The restaurant is situated with an island in the middle and chairs all around it--so if you're going with a group of more than 3 people for example, might be hard to have conversation since you won't be at a traditional table, rather bar type seating. Here is the best part--it's the adventure of picking plates as they float down the river and the anticipation of seeing something you want and hoping that no one picks it before it gets to you! Have no fear--in the unlikely event that everyone picks what you want every time you see it float down, you can always order whatever you want with the person in the middle who handles the drink orders and checks. Though I wasn't always sure what I was picking, nothing seemed too crazy. Here's something for all to consider at Katana...want a varied sushi river? I encourage everyone to order something different than what's floating from the options on the QR code as the chef will usually prepare more than one once someone orders it. So how is everything priced? Up on the wall, they have different colored plates and prices for each one. As you go collecting plates, you stack them in front of you which is how they know what to charge you. My recommendation is to be sure you'll eat everything on the plate to get biggest bang for your buck. Though the service was rushed (I understand--there's always a line!) still gave Katana 5 stars because the experience itself is so cool. Katana is a must-try! read more

It pains me to say this, but the bad reviews are unfortunately right. I was a loyal katana customer for years, but the wait times were my last straw. Waiting an hour or more for average sushi is not fun, and the people that claim it's the best sushi in Miami must have some form of Stockholm syndrome after waiting over an hour to eat. When you're starving after waiting so long to eat, everything tastes better. The restaurant does indeed look absolutely filthy. Dust and debris hanging from the ceiling over your food and the prep station can be quite unappetizing. I seriously don't know how this place doesn't have a health code violation yet. It's been years. To be honest, I feel like this place has so much potential. The little river with the boats and the different plates corresponding to price is an adorable idea. I would change my review if they implemented a reservation system where you can reserve a table ahead of time. It would make so much more sense. And clean the ceilings, and take better care of your restroom because a restroom can really tell a lot about a restaurant. (I work in the restaurant industry and I firmly believe this). It's one of our favorite things to eat. So we found this place on Instagram and decided to give it a go. The interior is extremely cool. The staff, ran by this phenomenal Japanese lady, is always on point and communicating with each other. It's like a well oiled machine the way they talk to each other about everything they're currently doing. Whenever somebody walked in they were greeted with a nice loud "Irasshaimase", and whenever they left they were bid farewell with an equally loud "Arigatougozaimasu!" The head lady knew all the locals name and made me and my girlfriend pretty jealous as we laughed and said we want to be her friend as well. Finally, we sat down and immediately got to eating. Everything was fresh. We watched the chef cutting and preparing all the sushi. We watched as he examined every cut of fish that came before him and expertly cut it and prepared it. It was a great experience to watch a master at work. We also ordered 2 sides of edamame and pork gyoza. They were fantastic! Finally we ordered the Bluefin Albacore. Specifically the Harakami section. Wow. You could taste the ocean. The Bluefin was truly a standout and I would love to eat even more! Overall, this place will become a regular of ours. This restaurant has a very immersive, interactive experience when eating. You can pick and choose whichever plates you desire off the boats floating in the water. It's like Venezia but with boats filled with food instead of people. As you eat, the chef is in the center preparing sushi rolls and other appetizers. You can order other dishes off the menu, there is a wide variety to chose from. I highly recommend Katana, if you are trying to eat like kings and queens, this is the spot. My favorite dish was the fried octopus, it was crunchy and just overall perfect. The seaweed salad was very refreshing and great to start off with.
