Visiting from Toronto and my son's 11th birthday and he wanted sushi served on a conveyor belt style. We used Yelp and this one came up. We read all the negative reviews but went anyways since there seems to be little options in the area. The Restaurant is a little hard to find since the restaurant offers no name on the walls or doors. We used the street address and visual clues that it was Japanese restaurant. Restaurant opened at 6PM and we arrived a 5:45pm with line up already. We entered promptly at 6PM and was seated immediately - it is an extremely small restaurant. The food was good and the kids loved it - the reason why it is so popular is because it was so cheap. We ate 20 plates with noodles and appetizers and the bill $65 unheard of. In Toronto or New York the bill would have been doubled. There was only 2 servers and 2 sushi chefs. Probably 1 more person in the back. You can see how the employees can be tense and somewhat crusty since the restaurant is so small and people are waiting in line from when they open to when they close. These people are going all out - running a marathon for 5 straight hours. So when a customer with higher expectations being overly demanding comes in, you can empathize with the workers for being somewhat rude unintentionally. For the record we encountered decent service. But we sat next to the cash register and the phone was ringing non stop for take out orders, the manager finally gave up and stop answering the phone to focus on the customers in the restaurant. So when you go to this restaurant expect it to be like the "Soup Nazi" in Seinfeld, if you can not handle it, don't go, I warn you. If you can, then you can expect a good meal at very great price. Remember to eat and leave - this is not the place to go for romantic dinner since you have 30 people standing over you waiting to take your spot. Man I wish I had a business like it. read more

The sushi is good and the prices are affordable. The restaurant is really dark inside and small, so you usually always will have a wait. Originally, I became intrigued with this place because there was always people standing outside waiting to be seated. I thought, this must be one of those hidden gems. There isn't a sign outside with the name of the restaurant, so this made me want to know what this place was all about. The key is to go at exactly 6pm when they open so you don't have to wait too long. There's limited seating, it's a very small restaurant. You mostly sit around the bar where the moat is, boats pass by carrying different sushi dishes. If you're not familiar with sushi, good luck figuring out what dish is on each boat, as none of it is listed. As the boats pass, you grab a plate and enjoy. Your bill is later calculated by counting how many plates you took off the boats. Different dishes have different colors and sizes of plates, this is how they know what to charge you. I personally think the Sashimi is cut a bit too thick, which can be unpleasant having to chew the raw fish for so long, especially if it's tough. I prefer thin cut fresh sashimi, which is delicate. I was also disappointed to see them using Krab instead of real Crab in their dishes. I tried it out twice to make sure my first experience wasn't an off day, but the quality was the same each time. Bottom line, the moat carrying the dishes is the main attraction. If you're looking for an experience unlike before, this can be fun. Just be prepared to wait, once seated, be prepared for an elbow to elbow experience in a loud setting. Based on appearances one may not go in, but trust your instincts... We made it to Katana around 10:30PM on. Friday night and there was a waiting line of 45 minutes. Well the wait was well worth it! The boats come by fast, carrying precious cargo... Tuna with Spicy Mayo, Salmon Sushi, all kinds of Sushi rolls, Gyoza, Uni rolls, seafood salad, you name it. They also have an additional menu with Noodles, teriyaki delicacies and sweet treats... The place is so full that it guarantees that the food is always fresh and just made. At times all the boats are sailing empty... Just to see new exciting shipments coming your way. Each boat carries a new surprise to be discovered. THIS IS THE BEST HOLE IN THE WALL SUSHI PLACE I HAVE EVER BEEN VISITED! I wish I had pictures to show but I was too busy scarfing down the yumminess! Everything comes to you by a little boat and you're charged by whatever the price of the plate is, I grabbed like 5 dishes and it was less than $25. Also I felt like their fish was such high quality as well. The only downfall but this place still gets its five stars is that the wait is quite sometime if you come with more than a group of 2 (we waited an hour an a half but well worth it) since there isn't much seating available, you do have the option to grab to go and eat elsewhere but I really enjoyed the whole sitting down vibe. read more

Gone fishing... Katana has good cheap sushi. I came here with a friend from out of town. When we first arrived there was a line of people ahead of us. The host didn't have a list and is just going off of memory on who came in first. I wasn't a fan of it but somehow it works. The restaurant is really really small and you should come here when it first opens to get seated immediately. Even of you come late and there is just a couple of you, you will get seated rather quickly. As we were waiting we asked for some beers and got seated in about 30 minutes. The sushi boat plates are priced based on the color of the plate ranging from $1.50 - $3.50. I'd totally recommend it. read more

I like this place, they recently intituted a number system for tables which was needed. It was a mess before. Not the cleanest place and if you are a germaphobe definately not the spot for you. For example the water they serce you is left uncovered and sometimes surrounded by peoplr which is gross to me so I order a canned soda here. Or beer. Oh conveyer belt sushi how I have missed you. It has been almost a year since my visit to Japan and since then I have been dreaming of the salmon nigri with thinly sliced onion and Japanese mayo. There it was and it took all I had not to yell hello lover when I finally and blisfully ate that nigri. It is probably one of my favorite foods to eat. And I proved it by having a few platefuls. Walking past this place you wouldn't know by looking at it that it's probably one of the best sushi spots in Miami. It's got a real cool low-key vibe and the sushi chefs and sushi itself are reallly good. We ordered take away from here. The ordering process over the phone was painless and the food was ready when we arrived ~25 minutes later. Staff was friendly! The food was great! The fish was fresh and there were many unusual offerings on the menu. We ordered a mix of standbys, like spicy tuna, as well as more unique offerings, like the squash roll. The prices are great - the sushi rolls mostly contain 4 pieces, which is preferable to me as you can order a bigger variety. I would definitely do take away from here again; however, I would think twice about eating in as the interior is abysmal. read more

Sushi is made just like in Japan, Smaller (than normal sushi you get here in the State) size rice and bigger fish slice. I have eaten a few cooked items as well and they are good as well. If you are in the neighborhood (oh I'm so lucky that I live in walking distance), you must try this place. Just don't go there when you are really hungry because likelihood of getting seats right way is super remote. But you can walk around the street and kill time as you wait...... This place was packed both times I went (Monday and Wednesday). Favorite part of Katana is the presentation. The boats floating by entice you to try so many things. At a very very reasonable price as well. Dishes were prepared perfectly and the raw sushi was excellent. I don't shell out 5 stars like it's nothing, but this review has been a long time coming. I've been coming to Katana (we lovingly call it Sushi Boat) for over 5 years now. And I am often there around 3x / month. Not many places in Miami Beach can earn the love and trust of locals. It's not a secret anymore, the word has been out, as can be seen from the troves of people lined up around the perimeter of the cozy restaurant on any given day. The space itself is no frills. It feels like one of those basement NYC sushi joints that you had to know about to get there because there's no restaurant sign that says "Katana" anywhere. Don't look up, you'll see dust on the air ducts and don't mind the imperfections of chipped tiles or peeling laminate spots on the bar. This is all part of the charm, so take it in. When you walk in, kindly ask those around you who is last in line, but don't bother telling any of the employees you're a party of 2 or 4 or whatever. Those who go to Katana operate by the honor system. Know who was in before you and don't cut ahead and play dumb. Plus you can relax because Toshi's eagle eye has it all under control. So stand back and order a drink while you salivate over what other people are pulling off of the adorable boats. Try not to hit the light switch while you're at it. What you spend in time waiting, you make up for as soon as you sit down, since you don't wait to eat! Ambiance and sushi honor code aside, the food is the star. It is unbelievably fresh, and it is so delicious. The boats are kitsch, but fantastic. It's exciting to see one of your favorites coming up on the river and the rush of grabbing it. Favorites include: yellowtail nigiri (squeeze the lemon on it!), salmon sashimi, spicy crunchy tuna salad, seared tuna with spicy mayo, eel nigiri, and gyozas. Everything - just try everything! It's all good, really damn good. So the best part of all to end the night, the bill. Two of us eat virtually everything we possibly can and leave with a $60 bill, drinks included, routinely. Been meaning to try this North Bay Village spot. Yes, its conveyor belt sushi but it's adorable! And cheap! The place was packed and they do not accept reservations. But worth the wait. We were kids so the "scene" was fun and upbeat. Lots of activity around the sushi. They have limited sushi options, but great family/starter sushi. And the Gyoza is some of the best I've ever had. The color of the plate the dish is on determines the price, so you choose how much or little you spend. Tip #1: Arrive about 45 min to an hour before you'd actually like to eat since there are only a few seats and tables and they have a massive following of hungry sushi lovers. They don't accept reservations and have a rather unusual method of waiting. Basically, you wait inside, and at some random time a gentleman comes around and asks how many you have in your party. At that time or shortly after, you're given a number and when there's a table or seats available, he called that number instead of your name. Tip #2: Don't miss out on the cheesecake tempura desert. It's amazing and large enough to be shared by three! Tip #3: Parking on Sundays is free in the parking lot behind the restaurant. Once your seated it's smooth sailing. If your not a sushi lover, don't fret, there are other options. Some are noodles, soup, dumplings, edamame, or tempura. I recommend the Udon. It's rather large and has great flavors.
