My husband and I were coming from the Bart Mid Sale and were heading to the PA Auction- We decided to stop at Katie's Kitchen for breakfast. They were busy, but we were able to be seated at the counter right away. We both got the Sausage gravy over home fries (they looked like little potato chips), a side of scrapple and coffee, and orange juice. We were not disappointed!!!! This was our first time there. Our waitress was very attentive and quick. Our food came within a few minutes. We had generous portions. We both usually are not big eaters - but we did finish our meals. Katie's Kitchen, an Amish-owned and -operated family restaurants, has been around for about 6 years. They offer a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, mostly PA Dutch favorites, as well as homemade Amish desserts for dine-in and take-out. The hubs and I came here to grab lunch after attending a festival nearby. The meals start off with a roll and a little cup of their housemade peanut butter spread - let me tell you, that pb spread is SOOO GOOD!!! It's light and creamy, and easily spreadable - I'd love to use that on pancakes and waffles, or just go out of town on a pb sandwich (they sell these by the tubs at the front, so make sure you pick one up on your way out!!!)! The hubs started off with a cup of Cheeseburger Soup (which seemed more potato-based with ground beef; I wasn't a fan of this, but the hubs enjoyed it); for our entrees, I had the Open Faced Slow Roasted Turkey Platter (this came with chunks of slow roasted turkey on homemade bread, topped with turkey gravy; a side of mashed potatoes with turkey gravy and a choice of a side (I opted for stuffing) also came with) - the turkey was salted and seasoned perfectly, and great with the gravy. The stuffing was a little more on the bland side, so I recommend in asking for extra gravy to be ladled on those. The hubs had the Fried Chicken Platter (comes with 3 pieces (drumstick, thigh, and breast), with a choice of 2 sides (we opted for the buttered noodles and the macaroni salad) - the fried chicken had a wonderful thick skin to it and was well-seasoned; great in dipping into the hot sauce if you wanted to spice it up a bit. We weren't fans of the macaroni salad (way too sweet) and the buttered noodles (way over cooked and had no 'butter' taste to them at all). We also tried their Homemade Meatloaf, which came with mashed potatoes with beef gravy (I loved how they stick with specific gravy for the platters; turkey gravy for turkey dishes, and beef gravy for beef-oriented dishes!); the meatloaf itself was okay; soft, with a thin layer of tomato sauce. I was sad that they didn't have the seasonal Meadow Tea (supposed to be mint-like), so I settled with their homemade sweet tea/lemonade (which was still very refreshing and tasty!). Our server was Becky, and she was very sweet; a little MIA, so just be diligent in waving her down for anything that you need when she passes on by! The place was filled to the brim, but luckily for us, we waited for only about 10 minutes or so (make sure you put your name down and your party size with the hostess). Never had Creamy Cheeseburger Soup before. Sounds kinda weird, but it's tasty, rich and creamy. Dinner Rolls: simple but good, light with a nice texture. Perfect with the delicious peanut butter spread that comes with it. (They sell the PB spread in tubs also.) Meatloaf: thick and juicy. Cooked just right, not overdone. Has a tasty tomato ketchup side. I wouldn't mind more herbs, spices, flavours in the meatloaf, but it's solid as it is. Mashed potatoes is fine. Baked beans are so-so; I wouldn't want them again. Did not enjoy the Amish Wedding Dinner which is basically little pieces of dry overcooked chicken mixed with stuffing in gravy. Stuffing is tasty enough, but chicken bits were not good, too dry. Meal is served with very refreshing coleslaw (nice!) and creamy celery, which was comforting, cooked into melty pieces in a slightly oversweet sauce. The place is run by actual Amish people. This place was recommended by a friend so we gave it a shot. I'm not stir crazy over the food in this area so sorry if that doesn't convey. The food was very simple to me and nothing was great. I ordered grilled chicken with sautéed mushrooms and baked potato... so trying to stick with healthier food in this area can be challenging when going to home cooked type restaurants. However, the mushrooms were canned and the potato tasted like it was microwaved?? The interior leaves much to be desired with the ceiling tiles and basic bench/chair/table seating. The decor is hmmm friendly but strange?? We sat at a booth with a few beach decorations on the wall?? Not really Pennsylvania to me. None of the food was bad... but none of it was great either. We had a 23 minute wait to be seated. Then 10 minutes to wait for Mary to come to our table. Mary never came back, i caught a glimpse of her counting money. Never came and asked if we needed drink refills, and 40 minutes later still no food, thats a bit much for a BLT. I finally asked another waitress to please get me a check for the drinks. At first glance, we thought ok its regular American Breakfast food-- eggs, bacon, bread you can definitely get this at a diner or Cracker Barrel on the side of a highway. But just wait till the food comes. It's the most delicious homemade food I've ever had in my life. We were recommended to go to a trendy new cafe in a town nearby but we passed this restaurant and decided to give it a try. We got the eggs with sausage and French toast. The French toast was ridiculously delicious. I'm a cinnamon type of gal and these toast we're heaven. So moist and cinnamon-y Before we left we ordered a shoo fly pie to go. My wife and I dropped in 12 minutes before closing and were unreservedly welcomed by the hostess. More of a surprise, a party of 13 arrived AT closing time and were equally welcomed (there is a limit to their hospitality, however: a couple seeking entry 18 minutes after closing were turned away...with apologies). Katie's Kitchen was impressive for its good hearty food, ample portions and swift, friendly service. I had the buttered noodles with beef and stewed tomatos, my wife had the fried chicken, and neither of us were disappointed. This is an authentic restaurant where locals go to eat, not a tourist-oriented kitch-fest like so many nearby. There are about two dozen tables and seating at the counter. They promise (and deliver) an Amish menu, but offer up a broad range of "Englisher" diner food as well. The food and hospitality are great and delivered as promised. We were never rushed dispite the lateness of our arrival. After we finished our entrees, we were offered dessert as if there was all the time in the world available to us...and then coffee...and then refills (which we ultimately declined). We used to love this restaurant, but now I have some issues and I am unable to eat anything with butter. If you have ANY issues with dairy, this is NOT the restaurant for you. We went for breakfast. Literally everything that I ordered had butter. I using baked oatmeal. That's just stupid! So all I was able to eat was dry toast and fruit. They got annoyed with me when I asked about things having butter. It also seems like you have to be a regular at the restaurant in order for anyone to notice you. There has been multiple times when we've gone there and no one came to our table for a long time. I tend to become obnoxious when I am hungry and no one will help me. Katie's is a solid choice for authentic Amish cuisine. The prices are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. The restaurant itself is no frills which is fine because it makes their food the focus. There was a waiting list we had to get on for dinner but we only had to wait 15 or so minutes to be seated. Only one person in our group ordered a dinner platter that came with their rolls and peanut butter but they generously brought each member of our table a roll and peanut butter for no extra charge. We got here at 430 & it was filling up. By 5 it was full and there was a line. There is a reason for that. The food was very good and the service was excellent. My husband and I desperately wanted to avoid the local chain restaurants so... Yelp to the rescue. So delighted we found Katie's. It's a cute café with table and counter seating. Servers are so friendly especially our server Sarah. Our problem was the menu. There are SO MANY delicious choices on their menu we had a difficult time deciding. In the end we opted for the roast beef sandwich with cheddar cheese and sweet potato fries. The roast beef was more like brisket and it was AMAZING. So tender, juicy and flavorful! The cheese was mild and fresh. Rolls were homemade, soft and delish. It was the perfect sandwich. Fries were homemade and cooked perfectly crisp. We had noticed that homemade Amish rolls and homemade peanut butter are served with the dinners. Sarah, our server, was kind enough to bring me an order as an appetizer. YUM to the rolls and the fresh peanut butter! SO GOOD! We finished our lunch with a slice of pumpkin pie that tasted as if it was baked that morning. My wife's veggie omelet was very good - - she was very pleased with the quality of the veggies. So far, so good. Now for the strawberry jam on the table - - YIKES!!! I put some on my toast to taste it - - YIKES!!! I was pissed. Why? I didn't want my eggs anymore, because all I wanted more & more of the very best jam I've ever tasted. Told our server that & she let us know that her aunt makes their jam. (Tip: if you like it, they'll sell some to you.) I normally don't order sausage gravy because many of them are overly salty, but what the heck - - I got a side of it. Slap my ass & call me Sally!!! That dog will hunt. Whatever you say, you'll say this is darn good sausage gravy. Plenty of sausage (some large chunks) & super tasty - - maybe the best that I've eaten. Twice in the same meal; and yes, brought some home to Connecticut. We went there for breakfast today during this covid time. Katie's Kitchen had a really big tent outside that had just about as many tables that they have on the inside of there restaurant when there was no covid 19. The outside tables even seem to be more then 6' apart. You go inside with mask on to place your order then they bring your meal out to you. We visit the Lancaster area sometimes twice a year and this has been our go to place for breakfast. There omelettes are very good but the best part of my omelet is there sausage. It is very sweet and so tasty. We were very happy with the service and of course it isn't anything like it was before these difficult times, like when a waitress was carrying around a coffee pot to fill your cup but it was pleasant and we will be back whether we have to eat under the tent again. read more

We were in the area for an Ice Festival and past this place several times so I googled it and found out it's Amish run (always a very food thing - amazing food and large portions). Hubby ordered their famous Buttered Noodles topped with slow roasted beef & stewed tomatoes which included a salad as well and I got the Fried Chicken with stuffing & stewed tomatoes. Both meals were delicious, hubby and I had never tried anything like the butter noodle dish but we'll be back for it and the fried chicken was really moist and juicy - I'm a salt-a-holic and I never picked up the shaker and the stuffing and gravy reminded me of my grandmom's, my only issue was that the stewed tomatoes were too sweet (like artificial sweet). Our server was Marybeth and she was even sweeter than the tomatoes but in a good way. Hubby and I couldn't help but notice how clean the place was, not so much as dust anywhere. I really wanted to like this small Dutch Run Kitchen but unfortunately it's food is mediocre and its owner/manager is a terrible representation of a business leader. On our trip my family got everything from Burgers to Soups to Chicken Wings. The food itself was decent. Nothing to jump up and down about just normal US Foods or Sysco style foods from a box. Where the meal really went downhill was with the Chicken Wings. Upon arriving the wings looked really good and the individual in our party dug right in. Only to find the center to be completely ice cold and under cooked. One large turn off is chicken served at a restaurant cold and not cooked. About 5 minutes later he was able to flag down the waitress. She said would you like some different wings or something else? He replied some other wings please. At this point we had all almost finished our meals and 15 minutes later when everyone was done the wings showed up. At this point he had to finish his meal after everyone was already done. I understand that this happens sometimes (even though not with chicken). What really upset us was when we got the bill and realized they charged us full price. When I asked the girl if they could take some off the bill due to the inconvenience and time spent waiting she went to the back to ask the owner/manager. Upon returning she said " He said since you ate all the wings you have to pay for them. If you ate half then you would only pay for half" This is by far the dumbest logic I have ever heard. Of course the individual ate the wings he was hungry and thats what he ordered. This is a prime example of not caring about your customers and only money. A very Greedy owner and non-caring establishment. Thanks for wasting our time Katie's and serving us cold chicken with a smile. Overall you have a lot of choices for a Pennsylvania Dutch meal in this area of Lancaster County. I would avoid this frozen food hole and go to an authentic Dutch restaurant where the establishment cares about their customers. But hey... If you like cold undercooked chicken, and being treated terrible go to Katies... at least they will smile at you. read more
