I happened to be in Costa Mesa and was seeking a small bite to eat. I searched for burgers and oddly enough, this Katsu placed popped up so I decided to give it a try! I'm not sure how they came up with their name, but my guess would be that they combined Katsu & teriyaki, as those seem to be their two main dishes. They're located in an unassuming shopping plaza off of Harbor Blvd with shared parking available in the lot. Upon entering, I was greeted by the friendliest employee. She took my order at the cash register and I took a seat at one of the tables. They have about a dozen tables available, and it's very clean inside. It's more of a fast casual type of place. I decided to try their Chicken Katsu sandwich for $6.95, as that's what they seem to be known for. They have combo specials where you can add fries and a soda for $4 more, but I just wanted a small bite to eat. It took about 10 minutes before my sandwich was ready. As soon as I saw it, my mouth was drooling. It looked way better than what I had expected. My first bite confirmed that it was just as good as it looked! The bun was buttery and soft. The Katsu was fried to perfection and was crispy and juicy without being greasy. It was extremely tasty and very hot since it was fresh out of the fryer. I used to go here twice a week but decided to stop coming here because the food and service have totally gone downhill! I used to appreciate the friendly service from Axel, but now am getting rude and cold service from a young girl at the cashier. Axel would offer me free chili sauces and water cups without me even asking and he would constantly check up on our table. We had to ask for water cups and the cashier told us they charge for water now. She didn't even give us any chili sauce! I was so pissed that I even tipped her! When I got my Beef Teriyaki, it tasted old and rubbery and the portions are way smaller than before. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had! While looking through Yelp, I saw Katsuyaki and after reading its reviews, decided to give the shop a try. And I definitely did not regret my choice. It was perfectly light and crispy, and had just the right balance of savory and sweet with a tasty Chef's sauce to dip into. As someone with a small appetite, I was able to split the bento box into two separate meals, which I looked forward to each time because it was THAT delicious! Service: 4/5 Service was a bit slow for a regular weekday but it got pretty busy after my friends and I walked in (dinner rush maybe?). The cashiers and cooks were all very friendly and willing to explain the menu, as well their favorite recommendations, which is always a plus in my book. In addition, there were plenty of tables to sit and eat at. Parking was relatively smooth! I would highly recommend going back here again if you are in the Costa Mesa area! This review is based on my second time coming here which was just yesterday. The first time I came, I ordered the chicken katsu sandwich which was reasonably priced and really tasty (I'd give the sandwich a 4 out of 5). This time around, I ordered the chicken teri / beef teri / chicken katsu plate which after tax, came out to almost $17. And that's without any tip. So pretty much you're looking at $20 if you decide to tip, add a drink or get anything extra. That is pretty expensive for your standard teriyaki spot if you ask me, but I was thinking it must be worth it based on the excellent reviews it has so far. It took about 15 minutes for it to come out. When I finally got the plate, I opened the lid to take a look and I must say, I was pretty disappointed in the portion size knowing that I paid nearly $20 for it. I guess I was expecting L&L type portions, which this did not come close to at all. I literally got only 3 pieces of katsu to go along with the chicken and beef teri. And the scoop of rice was pretty meager too. I ran out of rice before I could finish the meat. The food was good but not mind blowing, and I expected mind blowing at that price point. I know inflation is financially tough on everyone right now, especially restaurant owners, but in my opinion, passing on the costs to your customers will make it hard to generate repeat customers. At least in my case, it will. If the combo plate I got was like $11-13 instead of $16-18, I would find myself coming here more often. But unfortunately that is not the case and I don't see that changing anytime soon. read more

They have about 6 to 8 tables inside and the place is clean. They remind me of Flame Broiler, Yoshinoya, or Waba Grill. I tried their chicken katsu sandwich and a 4 piece California roll. Chicken katsu sandwich ($7) - The katsu had nice breading and a good crunch to it. The quantity of meat was on the smaller side given the price point. The bun itself was a soft brioche bun, although it was a little soggy. 4 piece California roll - $3.50 - There was nothing special about this roll. The quality was on par of what one might get at a local grocery store. Overall I thought the food was just OK given the pricing. My friend got a chicken teriyak/katsu plate and that was way over priced at $13. I doubt I would return. read more

For $8 I would not get this again. The chicken teriyaki I knew enough to ask for sauce on the side because it's always sweet. Luckily the sauce was slightly sweet but really salty. I had the chicken by itself and it was ok flavor wise and the meat tender, but nothing great. The bento box came with 3 pieces of california sushi and iceburg lettuce salad. Katsu burger was solid and a generous size but personally I needed some different flavors or some more slaw to cut through the katsu patty and bread. Garlic fries were a bit disappointing because the fries were not crispy at all. Although I'm very generous in my reviews, I can't say that the food was great. Most of the items I tried were on the basic side of flavor. I've had better Chicken Katsu at L&L's and better Teriyaki chicken at Waba grill. The only thing I really enjoyed about this place was there teriyaki sauce. It was very unique and flavorful.
