It's been a while since my last visit to Katz's, but it seemed like a good option for a late night spot after a show. We were seated on the ground level, big mistake, it was very loud and noisy for only being 1/2 occupied. The restrooms are on the second floor, and while going to wash my hands before dinner, I found the noise level on the second floor to be much more attuned to having a conversation with your table mates. Cleanliness was a bit on the needy side, but tolerable. I order the PASTRAMI HASH with fried eggs sunny-side up. The eggs were cooked perfectly, but after that the dish went downhill. The "hash" was thin slices of Pastrami, about 1/16" of an inch, cut into little square, mixed with onions and odd sized chucks of potatoes; but the flavor was bland. The best part of the dish was the toasted bagel with cream cheese. I love the Hash at Kenny & Ziggy's, but Katz's doesn't even come close. Kenny & Ziggy's Hash is definitely worth the $3 more that Katz's, and the portion is larger as well. I guess my expectations were too high. Also at the table we had: 1) GRILLED THREE CHEESE SUPREME WITH TOMATOES, it was "OK", but very average; 2) CHICKEN FRIED CHICKEN WITH COUNTRY CREAM GRAVY, didn't try it but guest said the chicken was good, but wasn't impressed with the gravy; 3) POTATO PANCAKES, these were terrible!! Overall not a good experience and definitely not up to par with many of the other deli's in Houston, particularly Kenny & Ziggy's. Not sure if we'll go back. On a good note, our server was very friendly and attentive. On a sour note... When I received the final receipt I was charged a "NON-CASH FEE" of (2.00%)" $1.30!! Which wasn't posted anywhere on the menu. This is a cost of doing business in today's cashless world, Katz's need to get with the program. If they want to give a cash discount of menu prices for paying cash, that's fine, but don't sneak in charges once the bill is presented. read more

Reliable and high-quality food. 24/7 makes this the best late-night food around. 1) The Monte Cristo is so tasty - - one of my favorite sandwiches in Houston. 2) Surprisingly good drinks 3) Great mix of foods for picky eaters in groups 4) Fantastic potato latkes. NOTE: if you buy 4 orders of latkes, which are supposed to have 2 latkes per order, you will probably only be given 4 latkes total. This has happened to me three times in 6 months. My husband and I landed in Houston well after 1am and were in extreme need of vittles. We were searching for something that would be serviced quick and fresh, so Katz's was an obvious choice. The restaurant was pretty packed, but the wait was short, we were seated in about 15 minutes. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I was taking my mom out for bfast after her long night shift in the hospital. So I was so happy that she loved the place so much. The service was really great! Very friendly and accommodating. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't overly impressive. We got the chicken and waffles and the Katz-adilla I liked the waffle, but the chicken needed more seasoning on it. Even some simple salt and pepper would have helped. I also liked the Katz-adilla which we added bacon to it. It was an interesting twist to a breakfast taco. However once again it just seemed to be lacking something. The bacon helped, but not for $3.50. The rating overall came down to the fact that we would go back but we would try something new there and we probably would seek out an alternative first. Today's review is for take out Matzo Ball chicken soup, potato pancakes and a Reuben sandwich. Because of all the sickness running thru the family, including moi, nothing is better than chicken soup for the cure. Today I ordered the large and I mean the large bucket of soup, the 15.99 bucket. It comes with veggies and Matzo balls and chicken and noodles, but I had it adjusted for more Matzo balls and no veggies. I also figured potato pancakes would be a good little side treat for the sick ones at home. The Reuben was actually for me but I did end up eating only a quarter of it and sharing the rest. The soup was very tasty and all of the sick adult really enjoyed the Matzo balls. The chicken was tender but you will need to pick it off the bone which is a negative. Had the chicken been bone off this would have been a 5 star review but really who wants to get this home and fiddle around with picking chicken off the bone from a soup. read more

Went here for lunch and it was really good! Reminded me of Philly a lot so I enjoyed the walk down memory lane looking at the menu and the inside pictures. Although I started to micro w little nats fly around. So I started looking around to notice one Nat has been chilling for 10-15 mins on the sofa above my shoulder. Used to love this place. Been coming here for almost 20 years since my undergrad at UH - early 2000s. Customer service has gone down the toilet and the leadership capacity of the management has fallen off, significantly. Not what I imagine the Katz Family had in mind for the restaurant with their name on the door. Brought family - four people over the age of 9 and one two year old. Five people total, including me, three of the other four were kids. They apparently charge an auto gratuity of 18%. Even with three of the guests being children, two of which ordered off the kids menu. The bottom of the menu says party of five is an auto 18% charge. Seriously? So a small family is considered a large party? For the kids, we ordered chocolate milk. We were charged the full price of a drink order for both. So apparently drinks do not come included in kids meals so beware. Our server was Andy. He was pleasant, knew the menu inside out, and made some good recommendations for my dinner choice. Once we got the receipt, I asked the hostess to speak to a manager. We got an individual named Perry. Not going to attack him, but he has a lot to learn when it comes to customer service. He might be operationally sound, but he is not who I would ask to resolve customer issues. He lacked empathy and was actually a little condescending. When I asked him some simple questions he hid behind "policy" and stated the gratuity charges are on the menu. Also stated that we ordered milk when the server took our drink order, so therefore it was a full charge. When I asked him about their policy regarding ordering off the kids menu he stated that we ordered the drinks before the food, when the server asked what we wanted to drink, so therefore the charges were valid. After his condescending remarks, he said he would refund the milk charges. I told him not to worry about it. The fact that I had to have that discussion, break down the issue to him, followed by his original reaction, I asked for the GM's card and left. Not wanting to add insult to injury. I thanked Andy on my way out. He even offered to give me cash but I told him not to worry and to keep his tip. I know these servers are underpaid, the last thing I want to do is hurt him and the busboy crews. So please ensure you do not order drinks with your family until you are ready to order your entire meal. Otherwise what should be included will cost you $3 a piece. Barry and Crew - if you guys are still affiliated with the business, please ensure your GM Greg has a customer centric leader on site at all times when he is not. Sincerely disappointed and just unprofessional as a people leader of a well-known and recognized restaurant in town. I'm not hurting for $20, so it is what it is. Very disappointed on the food and on the server, first thing our server is the bartender so we didn't get enough attention since there was people in the bar to be attended, didn't get refills throughout the meal. I ordered the breakfast waffle sandwich, my sandwich didn't even have the 4 slices of bacon as it said on the menu, waited for about 10 mins for the server to give us attention. I had told her that the sandwich was missing the bacon and I didn't like it, she took it to tell her manager but when she came back she didn't even offer me if I wanted something else and gave me my receipt, it was 90$ in total even after she removed the sandwich. I've been a Katz customer for over 10 years until tonight. I ordered 2 Klassic Reubens for pick up, 45 bucks including tip that was the worst Reuben, missing the dressing, half the cheese and Pastrami and my cc was charged an extra 10 dollars. I did open one container before I left with order but it wasn't until we returned home that we realized after one bite, how awful the Reubens were. Manager's Solution was to return food for refund. That would of been ok, except we are both disabled and took an Uber to pick up. Katz is over rated over priced and worst customer service. The man who led us to our table, never acknowledged us. He walked us to our table, turned around gave a fake smile and said our server would be there soon. 2. I decided i wanted desert FIRST because their deserts looked AMAXZING on tv. I aslo decided to keep my meal light to make room for the desert so i ordered onion rings and hot bread pudding. My daughter order jalapeno bombers and warm brown with ice cream. As the server was writing down our order i asked her to add fries to my order. My daughter made fun of me for ordering both onion rings and fries, and i responded by saying there's nothing wrong with both and the server laughed and AGREED. A few minutes later we get the onion rings and bombers. A few minutes later she came back asked how was the food, we said good i then asked her of she could bring me another napkin because I dropped mine on the floor, she said yes. A few minutes later she comes back, asks how we're doing i ask her for the fries...she looks at me in shock and says,,,,you didn't order fries...I then said, yes i did remember, you laughed along with us when i ordered. She then said, let me look...as she walked away I asked for a SECOND time for a napkin. A Houston institution by way of Manhattan, even after all these years and a post-covid menu revamp, this is some of the most reliably good deli food around. (No shade to Kenny & Ziggy's - it's a big city; we've got room for two great NY delis!) Katz's differentiates itself by "Never Klosing" - 24/7/365 - service, taste, and selection isn't compromised for the "whenever you want it" hours. If anything, the patrons rolling in at 2:15am, after the bars close, can sometimes be a little much - attempting to line their stomachs after imbibing too much - the staff are patient and professional, but keep tue place clean and secure - a miracle, all things considered. Today I came in with my elderly mother (who has visible mobility issues) and one of the girls immediately asked with a vapid glare: "Is upstairs okay?" Seriously? We were soon seated next to two occupied tables in the middle of the room downstairs. I asked if an adjacent table by the window was open and the reply was just pointing and barking: "No, this one!!" We were intentionally given the less desirable table and no one will convince me otherwise. On the bright side, I enjoyed the chicken and waffles considerably. Chante, our server, was incredibly professional, polite and attentive. Thanks to her, we learned that there is an elevator in the back. This might have been useful info to receive from the hosts, but that would mean they were doing their jobs. Hire new host staff immediately.
