Came here for a late night dinner. It was absolutely packed, but the wait time wasn't as long as I'd thought it would be. The place has two levels, we sat upstairs. The menu is vast. There's literally something for everyone and even breakfast, lunch, and dinner options so you can stop in any time of day for a good meal. My expectations were set somewhat low for Katz's. To be honest, I just scoffed at the name. According to their website, their first location opened in 1979. The famous NYC Katz's deli has been open for way longer. They are not related so doesn't it follow that they just stole their name? This hasn't sat right with me. I finally caved and decided to try it. I was pleasantly surprised. I had a Reuben #2 with pastrami. It was pretty good. Not as fatty/succulent as some of the pastrami I've had at Jewish delis in NYC / LA but still pretty good overall. It was accompanied by a tasty pickle and some solid coleslaw. My favorite part of the meal however was the matzo ball soup. It was excellent. Great texture and flavor. Right amount of salt. Just a winner overall. They have a huge menu but I personally wouldn't come here and order anything other than a sandwich and a soup. They are also open 24 hours which is obviously great for night workers, bar-goers, and night owls. read more

We came to kick off my birthday celebration and it was great! Our waiter Jon was so helpful and accomodating. He was quick and very and attentive. He took our drink order and suggested I started off my birthday right with a flight of margaritas which were fabulous! We then ordered my daughters favorite fried pickles and they were delicious. She and I shared a chicken parmesan plate which was a very large portion, perfect for sharing. And my husband had too much breakfast! LOL He normally can consume 3 scrambled eggs easily, but this time, the eggs won! Following an acceptable experience a couple of weeks ago, I made another order through Uber. I re-ordered the street tacos, and tried a hamburger along with the meatballs and 8 potato pancakes. The experience was immensely disappointing. I am frankly livid with the decline in the quality between 2 weeks ago and tonight. Dinner this evening was ruined. The potato pancakes are deep-fried. This is not OK! The meatballs are on cole slaw. Who does this? The hamburger is entirely missing (I got the fries). I don't know whose fault that was, or if my Uber driver is enjoying my burger right now. But of course all Uber will do for you is refund you the item price. Forget about actually getting the missing item. But that's an Uber problem, I suppose, not a Katz's problem. Still - I do not know if Katz's even properly packed everything so it might well have been the restaurant's fault. Like I said, the fries were included which suggests it might have been the restaurant at fault. Finally, the street tacos are greasy and devoid of any quality. They are missing many ingredients such as what I had 2 weeks ago. Mere meat and onions, with a very heavy coating of grease, like everything else. We decided to stop by Katz's for a late night snack, and surprisingly at 11 pm there was a 25 min wait. I guess that's a good sign, though. To begin with, or server Damont was FANTASTIC! He was so attentive and helpful. Katz's definitely has a gem there! The menu is large, so everyone is bound to find something they want. We started with the nosh basket, and everything was tasty in there. I ordered the matzo ball soup and two eggs with a side of brisket and potato pancakes. My only qualm is that I asked for my potato pancakes to be cooked light, which I know was a bit difficult because there are precooked, but mine came out almost black. It was a bit disappointing because the potato pancake bites in the nosh basket were so good, but it's okay. Good flavor but not much spice and not much salsa. They should also have a option to choose between red and green salsa. Love this diner! They have a parking lot next to the building that's reserved for the diner only. Their menu is huge and everything looked appetizing, they had a couple unique dishes too. My friend got the grilled cheese and I got the reuben sandwich lunch combo which comes with a side. I got the cheese stuffed potato, a must get, it tasted like cheesy mashed potatoes. My husband ordered the French dip (bread was soggy) I had the Rueben (corned beef tasted like just boiled meat - no flavor whatsoever) it was bad, and my son had the 3 stooges which was excellent. Came on a Friday night around 1AM after my company holiday party so was looking for a late night eatery and one of my do-workers suggested here. Parking is across the street in the lot or I assume you can park in the street if there is any available. Our server was pretty friendly and helpful in suggesting things on the menu for me to try. I ended up getting the monte cristo but I believe I substituted the turkey for pastrami. I also added a side of fries which was like $5 (highway robbery to me! Lol) overall it was okay. My wife and I live really close to Katz's, and we love hitting the happy hour. It's a weekly tradition with us. Everything is good doesn't matter what you order. My personal favorite is the Ruben, New York style, super thick. I've probably had 12 things off the menu my wife, another 12 and none of it's ever been anything but delicious. The staff is great. The bartender knows exactly what you want and how to make it perfect. I mean it's so cool. It's like a New York deli. There's an upstairs and a downstairs you can sit at. We enjoy sitting downstairs so we can watch the traffic go by. If you ever find yourself in Montrose, no matter the time of day, stop by Katz's, cause Katz's never closes! read more

Katz's! "We never close." After my Katz's experience yesterday (12/20/25) I can only hope the place goes tits up. Worst dining experience possible. Table service was nonexistent: my wife and I sat, seemingly unseen, by the idle bevy of servers and managers. After we were seated in what was apparently an area where diners were rendered invisible, we waited for twenty minutes, hoping that someone would appear to take our order. Didn't happen. Nada. Bupkiss. We finally gave up and walked out, noticing clusters of Katz's employees enjoying private convos while we sat unnoticed. This was the most egregious example of a business caring not a single fig about customer service. My wife brought the issue to the attention of a management person who responded with a deeply sarcastic reaction. This is not acceptable. The guy is too skinny to talk to people like that. Anyhow, upon leaving I was fortunate enough to miss a step on their tank trap of a sidewalk, went all the way down and enjoyed some painful, thankfully minor, injuries. I should have sued them since they maintain an obviously dangerous sidewalk. Anyhow, I will NEVER patronize Katz's in Montrose and strongly discourage anyone from darkening Katz's Montrose location. The slogan "Katz's Never Kloses!" defintely holds true! I wanted chocolate cake, after lunch, on new years day and Katz's Montrose location did not fail me. The 7-layer chocolate cake hit the spot. I just wish that the cake wasn't cold. I get that it's the way some places do it to keep the cake "fresh," but it took away from my experience. Also, the nitro coffee serving size was quite tiny for the $4.50 price tag. I'd like to add that, the option to have your waiters equipped with a handheld device for completing tickets at the table is very efficient, but it is off-putting when your check-out has to be done while the waiter is standing over you. My service was not up to par and I woud have preferred the option to not tip or tip what I felt was deserved, not ONLY the three option on the device's screen (15%, 18%, and 20%). Our waiter, Jared, was not very attentive, leaving me with melting ice in my soft drink glass by the end of our 30 minute dessert run. Still somewhat in a pandemic but met friends here for an early Saturday dinner. First time since 2020 and it was lackluster. We were sat upstairs. We are a table of 3 and there wasn't too much business. The server was nice BUT slow and somewhat inattentive. The food was ok but severely overpriced. $16 for a brisket/turkey sandwich plus another $5 for onion rings. So disappointed. And pass on the flavored teas. It was not worth it. Stick to water. My friend needed a refill and another 15 min passed. She told us she kept forgetting. Say what. The checkout system is horrible. It's on a handheld machine that they use to also put in the order. She charged my friend for a drink that they were out of so he asked for it to be removed. She went over to her manager and explained it to him. He was sitting on a bar stool and totally ignored us. Very unprofessional. It took another 15 min before we got the corrected bill. We also order desserts. Two for to-go and 1 for dine in. Another 15 minutes goes by. At this point, we just wanted to leave. Also the machine was set to 25% on the tip so make sure to check before accepting. Been to this location 1000x in the past. Was our go to spot and this experience was so disappointing. It was almost as if we were an inconvenience. Don't use their parking lot!! Granddaughter parked and then went across the street to get her boyfriend and returned to eat. Her car was towed literally 10 minutes after parking! We have 360 showing when car was parked and towing bill stating tow time. She has the receipt for food. Katz's has been around for quite a long time. I only discovered it as an adult trying to find some late night bites. Back in those days they didn't have all the locations they have now. They sell themselves as an authentic New York style delicatessen and I would agree that it is basically just that. You can get stuff like lox, matzo ball soup, or one of their piled high deli meat sandwiches. The menu is pretty extensive and there is something to please everyone's taste buds. That being said, parking isn't the greatest here. If my friends and I are trying to eat late night, we always come before the drunk crowd comes in after 2am. Ain't nobody got time for that. Customer service is pretty hit and miss, mostly hit for me. This place seems big as it is two stories, but it doesn't feel like alot of seating on each floor. You're basically on top of each other as well. The food is always pretty good. The portions are large but so are the prices. Overall, this is a decent option option in the area, but I prefer their other, newer locations much more. I'm sure I'll be back at some point. read more

The girls ordered pancakes, and I tried the pastrami hash because I never had it before. I suspect the corned beef hash might be better. It's been a while since my last visit to Katz's, but it seemed like a good option for a late night spot after a show. We were seated on the ground level, big mistake, it was very loud and noisy for only being 1/2 occupied. The restrooms are on the second floor, and while going to wash my hands before dinner, I found the noise level on the second floor to be much more attuned to having a conversation with your table mates. Cleanliness was a bit on the needy side, but tolerable. I order the PASTRAMI HASH with fried eggs sunny-side up. The eggs were cooked perfectly, but after that the dish went downhill. The "hash" was thin slices of Pastrami, about 1/16" of an inch, cut into little square, mixed with onions and odd sized chucks of potatoes; but the flavor was bland. The best part of the dish was the toasted bagel with cream cheese. I love the Hash at Kenny & Ziggy's, but Katz's doesn't even come close. Kenny & Ziggy's Hash is definitely worth the $3 more that Katz's, and the portion is larger as well. I guess my expectations were too high. Also at the table we had: 1) GRILLED THREE CHEESE SUPREME WITH TOMATOES, it was "OK", but very average; 2) CHICKEN FRIED CHICKEN WITH COUNTRY CREAM GRAVY, didn't try it but guest said the chicken was good, but wasn't impressed with the gravy; 3) POTATO PANCAKES, these were terrible!! Overall not a good experience and definitely not up to par with many of the other deli's in Houston, particularly Kenny & Ziggy's. Not sure if we'll go back. On a good note, our server was very friendly and attentive. On a sour note... When I received the final receipt I was charged a "NON-CASH FEE" of (2.00%)" $1.30!! Which wasn't posted anywhere on the menu. This is a cost of doing business in today's cashless world, Katz's need to get with the program. There are only a few options for late night eats around the Downtown area so sometimes you never know how the service is going to be. This particular late /early morning Katz's was slammed. I have eaten at a few other locations around the area and it seems like this particular location's kitchen service is a bit lacking. I ordered a simple cheeseburger med-well with just meat and cheese, side order of CRISPY onion rings, NO pickle on the side. Can you guess how my order came out? No....go ahead I will wait...... The server took down all the details because at the end of the night it was on the receipt. Why the onion rings seem like they have been sitting under a heating lamp for a couple of hours, my hamburger was made incorrectly and there was a pickle on the side. I sent the order back and why did the kitchen just change the bun and use the same patty??? When the server brought the order back out I immediately inspected the hamburger and can smell the pickle and condiments still on the patty. I will not go into detail, but I order my food a certain way for a reason. Now had it become a medical emergency, who would be at fault? Now after an additional 20 min (my guest already ate their food by now), I receive my hamburger and due to the state of my previous onion rings, I changed the side order to fries (Crispy). The manager Gabby was very racist towards us. We were very polite, understanding and respectful. Perry can vouch that we were very towards him but he supported his colleague as such that we were not allowed to dine inside. The establishment failed to restore the harm that was done despite multiple employees stating that we were in our right to be upset for the 40+ minute wait and being passed over.
