I've been coming here for about a year now and realized every time I went I came out with a different hair cut.. even when I asked for the same thing every time. These guys take no time to cut your hair and the only reason I continued to come was because it was cheap ($6.75). Well no more to that. wow. i just read all the reviews from people crying about anything and everything. well, i've been going to kay mar for at least 20 years. i don't even remember when i got my first cut there. maybe i was drunk next door at the bar and decided i looked like crap. who knows? but they've (almost) always been consistent, fast, and cheap. i've seen them in good moods and bad. hurried and in slow motion. when they're pissed off, i can sympathize, because i saw the jack ass with too much gel in his hair while i was waiting. i see your kids crying and fidgeting while a guy holding scissors is trying not to add to his ear collection. here's how to resolve those issues... don't style your hair before getting a haircut. what's the point? you know you look like a hobo, that's why you're going to get a haircut. do you really think you need to look good for your drive down there? jeez... just wash it before you leave the house and deal with it. hell, put on a hat and dark glasses if you're worried about someone recognizing your scraggly-ass in the 10 minutes it takes to drive there. and, you gotta wash it when they're done anyway, right? unless you like the feeling of prickly hairs in your collar... and kids? the only people who think your 4 year old looks cool with a fauxhawk are other parents with 4 year old kids. just grab a bowl and some scissors and save everyone the hassle. save the style for when he starts dating. i'm not gonna say this place is perfect. i've had some bad haircuts there, but considering 20+ years, once a month, not enough to count. and it's hair. if you have enough to cut, more than likely it's gonna grow back. bad customer service? it's a bunch of guys cutting hair all day for cheap. it ain't the VIP lounge at south coast plaza with free champagne. honestly, if i had to cut, i dunno, 30-50 people's hair a day for the rest of my life, i'd end up locked away somewhere that woudn't allow me to have scissors. give 'em a break. they're barbers. their job is to cut off all the hair you grew since the last time. don't expect them to make your life better, that's your job. and a new haircut can help. i mean, it makes me feel better... so shut up, sit down, relax, make small talk if you have to, and in 10 minutes it'll all be over and you can go back to writing bad yelp reviews about how the sushi place didn't have enough napkins last night, or the gas station attendant yelled at you because you forgot which side your tank was on... read more

I've been getting my hair cut here off and on since I was about 11 years old (so almost 15 years now). I had previously always come back for the cheap price, quick turnaround, and mostly consistent cut. There are about 5 or 6 barbers who work there, but usually only 3 are there at a time. Good luck getting the right barber...two of the guys are no good, but the other 3 have always done a good job for me (the 3 taller guys). I normally would have given it more stars simply due to the price and how fast they are, but last time I went in there, I was on the phone and stepped back outside to finish my conversation before getting my cut, and one of the barbers came out telling me to leave and that I couldn't get my hair cut there today. After I hung up, I went back inside to ask what that was all about, and the guy started cussing me out and told me to find a new barber shop. The other 2 barbers just stood there pretending to be deaf. So like I said, been going there for about 15 years...and although I've shown my loyalty to this shop for years on end, the barber was a real...jerk... Not the kind of business I want to support. I've been coming here for about three years after my barber of twenty years retired. Basic haircut under $7 is a great bargain. This is a no frills, men's barbershop. I have been pretty lucky in getting decent haircuts, but my hair is short and easy. If you're under 30 or if you need mousse, gel or special attention, well, brother, this is the WRONG place for YOU. (No "Jersey Shore" or metrosexual clientele allowed.) Over the course of three years, I have come to the following conclusions: 1) Most all of the barbers loathe children 2) Most all of the barbers loathe women 3) Most all of the barbers REALLY loathe women bringing in their children 4) Dads, they not only loathe your sons, too, but loathe you almost as much as the moms who bring their sons 5) If your kid is only a little guy, and you want to have the same barber cut your hair, too dam bad for you. 6) Ironically, most of them have bubble gum for the kids just like the old days. Go figure. 7) If your kid is, maybe, I'd say five or six and up, it's not too bad and they don't throw you the ol' stink-eye when getting ready for the cut. All the one star reviews? Yeah, I've pr'y seen it happen. Two stars? Yup. Four stars? I've probably experienced your review, too. Five? Well, I doubt anyone gave it five...I certainly wouldn't... Sat down and asked for a tapered line up and a beard trim. The guy didn't understand what a tapered line up is. "So a regular haircut then?" he says. "No. A tappered line up." I said. After a little more clarifying what I meant he says ok and precedes with the simple line up I requested. He finishes and says $6.25 (which is the price of a haircut there.) I give him a ten, say thanks, and walk out. I remember I wanted a beard trim also so I turn back around and the guy locks the door. I look at the time and see theres ten minutes left till the posted open to close hours are up, I ask about a beard trim and the guy says, sorry were going home. My experience here was awful, I came in one day and I already had a favorite barber. I had tried the other barbers but this guy cut my hair the best. I sat down and was waiting for my favorite to be done with his current client when the manager walks in and told me to come over and get my hair cut, I informed him that I was waiting for my fav barber and that I'm ok with waiting the few minutes. He says to me that they don't do that here and if I want my hair cut I will come over to his chair, I told him no and that I would wait. He then repeated that they don't do that there and raised his voice at me to come to his chair if I wanted my hair cut. Went there for a haircut because it was convenient. The barber jacked up my hair so I asked him to fix it politely. He got offended and said "What do you expect for a $6.75 haircut " wether a haircut cost $5 or $50 it should be a quality effort and the customer should b pleased with it. I asked the other Barbers there to fix it and I was told "NO" and to go somewhere else. I didn't even get mad. They did give me my money $10 back. I love this place. My grandpa went here [when he had hair], my dad has been going here since he was a child, and now my son goes here for his cuts and i dont take him anywhere else anymore now that ive moved back home. The owner is NOT rude. When I was little I would go in with my grandpa to watch him get his hair cut and he always gave me a piece of bubblegum. Now my son is getting to get a haircut AND that same bubble yum bubblegum I would get when I was little. Its cheap [$10 will cover the cut and a tip, I always try and tip a little more] and fast service. I as a professional womens hairstylist am amazed at how little money they ask for and how fast and accurate they work. All they do is mens cuts all day long. This place is a hidden jem. The parking can be rough since theres a bar next door but its worth it. Theres a parking lot in the next lot that you can park at and easily walk to if theres no parking. I love Kay-Mar Barbers! I only gave this place 3 stars even though this has been my primary barber shop for over 11 years now. The barbers have been the same except for the Mexican guy who has been there for a couple years now. There is no waiting you can't wait for a certain barber, they will not allow it what-so-ever. I've had all of them cut my hair, and the only two that usually do it right are the 30 year oldish cool fat guy, and the Mexican guy (and yes i realize it is sad that I don't know any of their names even though I've been coming here since i was a kid). The main reason to come here is that they will cut your hair for cheap, $5.75 i think right now. I don't know for sure because I always tip a dollar or two. I have been going to this barber for over 6 years, I have been getting the same cut for almost 11. I have always requested "A medium regulation haircut, with the top trimmed." I always have walked away with a haircut close to the requested, but for less then 10 bucks with tip I couldn't complain. Usually would have to spot check for missed patches when i got home, and trim it I had something important going on. But recently while waiting in line I have seen one of the fat (younger, with chair by the bathroom, normally doesn't give a good cut) barbers being a jerk to people. I was unlucky and got this guy on his bad day. My usual request turned into a series of questions on want trimmer guard to use for the top of my head. I honestly don't know, I never asked, I am not a barber. And i repeated that i just wanted it trimmed ( i really didn't care what length) and told him I have been making the same request for 6 years at this place and never had a problem. At that point I wasn't very happy with his attitude so decided I should leave. After standing up, still confused about what was going on, he then began to swear at me, and told me to never come back. BTW the other 2 fat old guys just sat reading their paper, there like nothing happened. ( there was no line, and yet i was still being hurried and tossed out ).
