The food is familiar to the American pallet but different enough to be special. On this occasion we had the crispy Szechwan beef, honey walnut shrimp, sweet and sour pork, and the orange chicken. However, there was a really sweet young kid at the register who was super helpful and friendly he definitely brightened things up. Finding the place can be a bit of an adventure. It's tucked away in a cozy corner right next to the grocery store so you really only spot it once you've parked. Oh and a quick tip make sure you don't mix it up with the Korean restaurant nearby. A couple of minor bummer moments the chicken lo mein wasn't quite what we hoped for. The noodles were super thin and crunchy rather than the thicker, chewier kind we expected and sadly they were out of egg drop soup that day which was a shame. This is VITAL when serving sushi so that all the ingredients/flavors are properly highlighted. Ordered an assortment of raw and cooked fish and it got better with every bite. The quality of tempura is crazy good, crispy, light, not oily. Vegetables were fresh and crisp, and the fish wow... just go. We also ordered a side salad with the homemade, house ginger dressing. This dressing is a flavor bomb and was so refreshing yet deep with flavor. You can also purchase the dressing separately it's that good haha! The owner was present and gave me a warm greeting and offered great recommendations. BTW, dine-in customers get a complementary miso soup which was also very delicious! A mid-2026 revamp of the décor and menu at Johnny's Kitchen & Tap, together with a new business…read morename (under the same owner), has transformed the passé supper club-style restaurant into a contemporary sports bar. We could not agree more that the 1980s décor was looking tired and old, and the menu needed refreshing. The new decor is considerably brighter and also more spacious and open. But really now, do the north 'burbs need another sports bar? Without the old sound-absorbing surfaces, the noise level is considerably higher. A contemporary pop-rock soundtrack blasting from the speakers combines with commotion from the bar, making conversation difficult. The menu has been updated with additional apps, burgers (and other sandwiches), pizza, "Wok Out" bowls, and Tex-Mex. Thankfully, an assortment of the old school dinner entrees including wood-fired rotisserie specialties is still available. But there is no longer a separate menu of dinner specials (including the Three Course Supper). And, while entrée prices are unchanged or modestly higher, the tradeoff is that the entrées come with a single side dish whereas they previously included a bread basket and a choice of soup or salad. Currently a bowl of chicken tortilla soup is $5.95 and a garden salad ordered with an entrée is $3.00. We ordered the latter. The side salads here used to be generous in size, but what we got this time was a surprisingly skimpy serving with a puddle of water at the bottom of the bowl (which seems to be a trademark of their salads). We used to pay a modest upcharge to substitute a small Caesar or Greek salad, but now these upcharges are $7.00 and $8.00, respectively. Bummer! We expressed our dissatisfaction to our server and also a manager. Both were pleasant and understanding (I suspect they hear similar feedback from other diners). My Missus ordered a single pork chop BBQ-style ($18.95) and requested that it be broiled with sauce on rather than poured over after it was cooked. The kitchen neglected to follow this request. I ordered the cedar plank salmon ($29.95) and our friend ordered the chicken kabob ($22.95). Everything was very good but nothing really stood out. Value-wise, the current menu is overpriced. Sports bars are popular to the point where they have become very competitive. The places that are innovative and offer an upscale menu and - importantly - good value have the edge. Our experience at Lake Avenue Tavern was average at best. We will miss the old Johnny's (and the "oldies" soundtrack).

Unfortunately this steak had so much connective tissue or silver skin (not fat) that I couldn't even cut it with their steak knife. It was inedible.
