This is the first time trying Kei in Reno (I've been to the one in Carson) location. I love the ambiance! It's quiet and their music isn't crazy loud either! Service was good and food was good! I wasn't able to get any photos because my hungry tummy got to it first! If I had to choose, I think I prefer Carson City location. I think their service is a tad bit better!

I have driven by this place many times and decided to give it a try. There were only three customers when we arrived. The sign says wait to be seated. Other than the sushi chef, no one was around so we sat at a bench to wait. After a few minutes, we were finally seated. We decided to have AYCE. I liked that the sushi wasn't loaded up with rice. The best was spicy tuna hand roll, spider roll and unagi nigiri. The restaurant has a lot of seating and we could have spread out but the hostess seated someone next to us. If I go back to this place, I would other the same as above but not AYCE. I dislike being charged a non-cash adjustment. See receipt.

While in Reno this past Mother's Day and decided to treat my daughters to their favorite and while searching Yelp, I stumbled across this great AYCE sushi restaurant located on McCarran in the Trader Joe's shopping plaza. The restaurant is large but spacious! When we arrived around 5:30ish we were told there would be a 25 minute wait which was fine considering it was Mother's Day. The servers were friendly and very attentive and the many diners appeared to all be very happy so we were excited when our number was called to be seated. The fish was fresh and they have a large variety of rolls to choose from. We started with the baked mussels, cucumber salad and miso soup. All of which were yummy! Sadly it went downhill from there. Granted it was Mother's Day so I only deducted 1 star but the wait for sushi was beyond ridiculous. In total we were there for 3 hours and when our rolls finally came out, they were great but we had lost most of our appetite and were eager the leave so we left feeling a bit unsatisfied. The servers were aware and very apologetic and offered us a free strawberry mochi of which we appreciated. I will be back to give them a second go, definitely not on a holiday though.

This place is okay. I think one of my favorite things is they have a huge selection of rolls. Service was also just okay. Rolls took a long time and our sushi chef didn't speak very good English so we had to repeat what we wanted a lot. This place is huge and nicely decorated inside and in a good location just not sure I would come back.

Long story short this has been my favorite Sushi spot the last 10 years. I compare every sushi place to this spot and this roll. I come here for almost all my birthdays and showing new people. This place has a special place in my heart and I will keep coming here as long as i'm alive. This place is by far the best sushi in town. GET THE RED DRAGON ROLL ITS THE BEST ROLL EVER!!! Not to mention the service is so on point and solid. Most other sushi spots always have ass service and by the end you're barely full and don't feel like all you can eat was worth it. Vs here I'm fully and happy money well spent everytime.

We went during an off hour when nobody else was here. All rolls can be made as long rolls or hand rolls. Nigiri is great! They have their "specialty" nigiris which is yum! The pieces are larger compared to other sushi joints so you'll fill up quick. The inside was nice. I recommend updating/changing their menus because their menus are starting to fade and they're kind of sticky to touch. Sushi price is a bit higher compared to other places, but worth it because they have many sushi creations that others don't have and makes you inclined to always try something different.

Giving 4 stars as I have only picked up and have never eaten inside. Ambience is really quaint. A smaller restaurant but is busy allot. Have never gone beyond the entrance/register but you can clearly see inside. Service is always pleasant whether it is the wait, host staff, or the owner herself. She is a super sweet lady that loves her place. The food has always been quite delicious. Have had sushi as well as rolls and kitchen plates. 1 was a grilled teriyaki salmon. That was quite yummy too. I really do not have any complaints on this establishment.

Came to kei sushi for the first time for my friends birthday dinner and it was delicious! One thing that is super interesting and unique to kei is that they don't give you papers to fill out for AYCE. Instead they have a server come by to take your order. At first I thought this was going to be annoying and that rolls would be forgotten but it was actually great! Our server came by our table more often than other sushi restaurants and I think a big part of that is because of the ordering system. I only order cooked rolls and every roll I ordered was good. There wasn't anything I was disappointed in. They have an appetizer called the dragon balls and I was obsessed. Basically a jalapeno popper. I think i ordered it 6 times. I would come here just for those. SO GOOD. Our service was great and our server was super nice and fast. We will definitely be back

If you have never been to Kai Sushi in South Reno in the Smithridge Shopping center, this is a fabulous Five Star sushi restaurant choice. The ambiance is beautiful, Sushi is Fresh and Food Presentation is Five Star. Owner Silvia who has owned this fantastic Kai Sushi location for 7 years, gave us the most outstanding service and the best hand roll I have ever tasted. Emily and I love how you created 2 little cups with lemons for our chilled Plum Wine in the Hot Saki pitcher. Thank you to Sushi Chef's Marvin & Merlino for torching the Red Dragon and giving us a firey show at the same time. The TORCHED Red Dragon hand roll is the BEST hand roll I have ever tasted! We also ordered a 2nd Torched Red Dragon hand roll, baked muscles, seaweed salad, edamame and Salmon. Not only did we try the all you can eat lunch with my daughter, but then 2 days later I brought my friend Lelia in to also try this fantastic restaurant and Torched Red Dragon Roll. She loved it too! I can't wait to try your Bento Box next. Thank you Silvya for a Five Star dining experience for my daughter and my friend. A big shout out to server Kyra for a wonderful lunch and your Sushi Chefs. This is a wonderful Restaurant and dining experience. Truly Five Star. Julie A

Once again enjoyed a great meal! Birthday lunch for my friend, Did all you can eat as 2-3 rolls each would have been about the same cost and this way we each got an appetizer and my friend got ice cream with his meal. Drinks are not included but we each opted for ice water with lemon which is great with the salty sushi. We went about 1230 Saturday and got seated right away without a reservation. They did start to fill up after we got there. Our server was prompt and I was able to get the gluten free soy sauce as well as my crystal shrimp sushi which was divine! I love the crab strips on top of the Lily and this was my favorite! The Godzilla was good with the little bit of heat from the Siracha. My friend ordered the macho macho which is on the spicy side with Siracha and pickled Jalapeños. The Volcano came as two rolls and was very filling! We managed to eat most with my friend helping with mine. They do charge extra if you're unable to eat what you order but we didn't leave too much!! Stuffed but happy.

First outing of the New Year and the food is still amazing. This was the first time I've done a lunch outing and the only difference is the number of people. Our server was new and in training, but she was very organized. The fish was firm and flavorful. Not at all rubbery and didn't have a strong fishy odor or foul taste. Maybe next time I'll be brave and order outside my comfort zone.

Such a chill place to have sushi. Sushi is a Zen experience for me. I love going to have sushi at spots that are relaxing. It gives you a chance to slow down and really savor the flavors. I really enjoyed the nigiri, especially the escolar, which I consider to be like butter. Super tasty and such a rich flavor. I am not a big fan of the rolls, I tried one roll and it seemed that the sauces and everything overpowers the fish. I would return to Kei just for the escolar and the ambience.

Is this business gluten-free or celiac friendly?

Hi Sarah, yes we are. We have GF soy sauce, teriyaki, ponzu, and GF tempura batter, unfortunately we do not separate the oil.

    Hi is your tempura vegan?

Hi, Yes it is, but we do fry everything in the same oil.

Do you get free sushi on your birthday?

Hi Amber, with a party of five or more you will get a $25 gift card to use on your birthday or a later date if desired. I hope this answers your question. Thank you.

Parking is fairly easy, with plenty of street spaces nearby, and an easy walk if you're already hanging around the neighborhood. The service was friendly and fairly prompt, and even for a weekday night the place was bustling, leading to a bit of a backup. Cool vibes all around, and it's neat to sit at the bar and watch the chefs do their thing. Though it does mean this is a little bit on the noisy side. Look at the menu, and there are tons of tempting options. As the name suggests, their specialty here is small plate off the grill or out fo the fryer. But they do serve really good-looking ramen, too, which I will make not to try next time I swing by. I at first went with a quick bite of grilled chicken thighs, which were just amazing! They were juicy, eprfectly seared, with some grilled green onions and an amazing sweet soy sauce. I also went with the yakionigiri, which are balls of rice that are grilled, brushed with sauce, and topped with a sort of mango slaw. A bit uncommon, but wow, these were also just so delicious! Also had a glass of sake, though they have a full bar should you want some other sort of beverage. Prices here are, I feel, a little on the higher end for small plates. However, I think it is definitely worth coming and trying this place out at least once or twice, just to expereince some of the good food. I'm sorry it took me so long to finally step through the doors, but I am certain I will be back again to try more of what's on the menu.

If I were paying by the piece, I might want them bigger, but for AYCE, this is exactly how I like it because I can try more things. The service is always quick and friendly. They don't have the biggest selection, but everything they offer is good. The Playboy sounds a little funny, but it's really tasty if you like a little spice. I think the staff can recognize when patrons are seasoned AYCE sushi eaters like we were and turn up the hustle (in a good way), and I also overheard our server patiently explaining how AYCE works at the table next to us. The place itself definitely leans more fast-casual/no fuss as far as typical sushi restaurants. It's clean with plain walls/no decor, and all seating is all 4-top tables and bar seating. The menu didn't feel very varied--it was mostly the same types of rolls (crab mostly) with different sauces. That may just be personal preference, since I tend to like shrimp rolls (either cooked or uncooked). When we arrived, we were seated in the far right corner. There were other tables nearby, but because we were a large group, it took a while for anyone to take our drink orders. We even had two separate servers come by to ask for drinks. Once we ordered sushi, that's where things really went downhill. We were split across the tables (four people per table), and although we placed our orders at the same time, half of our group didn't receive their sushi until about 30 minutes after the other part of us. It felt like the order process wasn't managed well. Customer service was also inconsistent. We had to keep asking for items we never received, like refills, and we didn't get straws. Even though the restaurant was busy, I've been to other sushi places on busy nights and never experienced service this slow. The only thing I truly liked was the appetizers. The beef teriyaki was the best thing I had--really tasty. I'd recommend that, but only if you have a lot of time to spare, because the wait for food and follow-ups was a struggle. When we tried to order dessert, it took so long for someone to come back that a few people ended up giving up and not getting dessert at all. Overall, customer service took far too long, and the sushi was just OK--not especially flavorful or memorable for me. The rolls tasted pretty similar, and I don't think I'll be returning.

So let's get the cons out of the way first. My son and I sat at the bar, and on the big screen against the wall, CNN FAKE NEWS was playing. Personally irritating, and I don't think they should be showing news shows from any side at a restaurant. We were in during lunch hours, and towards the end of our visit we were the last party there. That being said, clearing out our empty plates and getting refills wasn't very expeditious. I sat probably for about 15 minutes with an empty soda cup. I would understand if it was busy and at night. Disappointingly, lunch has its own separate menu, and you can't order dinner rolls for the lunch price, like you can at Ohana, Hinoki and other places I've been to and frequented. Now that, that's out of the way let's get to the rest of the review. I'm guessing the owners, we're super nice. We were greeted right as we walked in the door and chose our seats. Victor was our sushi chef. Great guy, and turns out some great sushi. The next time I go I will be sure to sit with him, but the other two Cooks were nice also. The entire restaurant, especially the bar area was spotless! I can tell they all take pride in what they do. My sin and I ordered probably 65% of the lunch menu. The quail egg shooters, whcih we ordered about a dozen total were SUPER good, and served in a modified Oriental soup "spoon" instead of a shot glass. Sort of awkward to eat, but doable and tasty. My personal favorite (lunch) roll was the "Crazy Dream" roll. SO many different flavor profiles. They had unique takes on some of the nigiri and appetizers, like the 'butterfly' and the tempura Jalapeno opposed to other sushi joints. So all in all, it was good enough for me to go back and give the dinner menu a try.
