With the Covid-19 issues my usual spots were not open for dine in. Yay for Kei being open. I gave them a try during the lockdown with their specials and that was awesome, but as soon as they opened I was in line for dine in. You do have to make a reservation and wait outside on arrival until the table is ready. Mask up unless you are at the table (that means mask on when going to the bathroom and coming and going). The service is good, a little different that you tell them what you want instead of marking a card, but that's fine. fish was fresh and the portions were good. (we locals love the events, but sometimes just want to leave them to the tourists). So we headed over to the Smithridge Mall (near Trader Joe's/Steinmart). Yelpers have given this place a good review and now I know why. AYCE at the tables or sushi bar. We chose to sit at the bar. Their entire menu is available for AYCE, unlike some other places that have limited options. There are probably only 1/2 dozen items that are for the dinner AYCE. Went for lunch today at 12 when they opened. No one was at the front so we waited about 5 minutes to be seated. Not that big a deal. Ill say 4 stars for how nice the employees are, 1 star for the rolls and 1 star for the wait time. The fish didn't really taste like fish. It tasted more like nothing. I forgot to take pictures of the food, but they looked good. It's just the taste wasn't there. My roommate and I were there about 1.5 hrs, which is a while for two. There were only about 5 tables filled by the time we started ordering. We ordered 5 rolls, 2 orders of gyoza, 2 orders of mussels, and 1 order of miso soup. My first time at Kei Sushi and first time eating in a restaurant since the Pandemic shelter in place. I met up with a couple friends who had made the reservations for 7:15 p.m. We got there at 7:20 but our table wasn't available yet and they let us know it would be about 10-15 minute wait. They asked us to wait outside. Looking around the restaurant before heading outside I noticed that the bar area of the restaurant was closed with plexi glass protecting the sushi chefs from the customers table area. The tables are spaced 6 feet apart and they are only seating at 50% capacity. All employees were wearing masks and hand sanitizer was available for customers by the door. The table was ready for us and we were provided the laminated menus. I did wish they had disposable menus...but luckily I had hand sanitizer with me which I used each time after I handled the menu. They don't have sheets you fill out for all you can eat sushi, instead the waitress took our order. Our order came at a reasonable time and all the sushi was fresh and delicious. Their presentation of their sushi was beautiful. My favorites from what we tried was the rooster salmon nigiri, the mussels, salmon skin hand rolls. I was in the area for vacation and we decided to try this since we were craving some seafood. To be completely honest, the nigiri and raw fish was mediocre at best but some of the rolls were interesting and refreshing. A lot of the rolls had thin lemon slices in it and were lighter than I expected. The tempura and ceviche was good appetizers too. The price is not bad - $24.95 for dinner. Ever since the pandemic, this is where I've been dinning out for sushi. My favorite sushi place has been having crazy lines and this place gets you seated right away and allows reservation. I've gone four times here and our server (I will reupdate to put her name next time) is so sweet. Very good service. And this place has thee best sushi options and they are so freaking good! Absolutely horrible service! I'd never recommend any family or friends to eat here. It was a bit busy but with five cooks behind the counter you wouldn't expect a 45 min wait to get four rolls. I had some family visiting from out of town, and it was absolutely disappointing. After asking for a check due to the wait time, the waitress then came over and snatches the check out of my hand after telling her how we wrongfully charged for some rolls. As far as the taste of the food it was good , but if you see more than 3 tables full I'd just turn back around. It's hard to enjoy the food when we were all expecting all you can eat and have been looking forward to it all day, not to mention those who got the chicken teriyaki were done with their food before we even got our first plate of sushi. We didn't get to take many pictures due to having lunch with friends, but I will say this place was pretty good! It was interesting with ordering! For starters, we received a menu that didn't have any pictures of their rolls, so we knew what some of them looked like. We relied on pictures from the internet to help us! In terms of atmosphere it was okay. There was no music playing, so all you could hear was kitchen background noise, employee conversations and really anyone else around you, as well. Towards the end of us being there, music came on. Service was alright as well. Our server was not as catering to pleasing our table as most places have been. We had 4 small children in our party and the server wasn't all that interested in engaging any of the children when they waved, talked to her or asked for something, which was kind of disappointing. My friend's child asked several times for a area and place setting (fork, napkin, etc. before I stepped in to ask because she was ignored. It also took longer for our table to receive 2 rolls at a time, where as other tables who got here after us were getting several at a time. Kids meals took a long time to receive so we had to give them some appetizers and sushi while they waited and we were charged extra as a penalty for sharing. But you can't eat in front of children, and they wanted the food sitting on the table. In addition, when they came out, the food was way too hot for them to eat right away. Fresh food is great, it just took a really long time. We were there for well over an hour and probably 35-40 mins was waiting on food. In terms of flavors, some of their rolls are very creative and are delicious. Others like the green monster, were very interesting and was our party's least favorite. My partner and I came in the weekend after valentines Day, but we made a reservation, and they had our table ready to go. Efrain (pronounced Efrin) was our server. He was absolutely lovely! Super kind, he answered all my questions sufficiently or got the answer promptly if it wasn't known. My partner and I got 6 rolls and 3 nagiri orders for our dinner time All You Can Eat (about $32 per person for the time). All made gluten free (for just $2 extra!) They have a gluten-free batter! We have been going here for awhile. Being a family that one- the father was a sushi/hibachi chef and is Half Japanese, 2. Wife being a cooker of real authentic Japanese food for 31 years of marriage- we know what real Japanese food is suppose to taste like. I love the lil bits of fruit as garnishes.. it's refreshing. At the end we get the kids mochi or ice cream- green tea. But my favorite is- Miami roll. Now if you don't ask for substitute soy wrap- you'll get the seaweed. So be sure you ask for that! It doesn't taste well if not. I ask for no chocolate either. Cost about 7.50 but OMG! I liked Kei sushi a lot, but their rolls are monstrous, and I only got to try 2 different rolls before I became absolutely stuffed. The next time I visit, I will definitely try to bring more people so I can try more of what they have to offer. My girlfriend ordered a couple vegan rolls a la carte, and she said they were quite delicious. The atmosphere is really nice, and the bar is nice and big. There is a really nice picture of a Japanese woman that captivated me every time I looked at it. The service was impeccable, I wished I had gotten the purple-haired waitress' name because she was absolutely friendly and just plain wonderful. The other lady was great too and chefs nice but the purple-haired lady was just the best! The sushi was absolutely great, my nephew polished off his chicken katsu bento box and really liked his potstickers too but he actually commented how great his miso soup was. My niece loved the shrimp tempura appetizers, she said it was perfectly crunchy and massive. What's best about this meal was we felt welcomed and weren't at all rushed to finish our meal, and that kind of quality customer service that keeps us coming back. Sushi is decent, service is terrible. We came here on a Friday evening and while they had a decent crowd, the restaurant wasn't more than half full and they appeared to be fully staffed. Despite that we had to wait a long time to order, kept having to ask for things multiple times and had to flag down the waitresses because they rarely came back to check on us. They didn't refill drinks unless we asked. When asked questions about the menu neither of our servers had any answers. One did go back and ask the sushi chefs, which was nice. They have a 20% mandatory tip for parties over 6, which they did absolutely nothing to deserve. They put lemon on their salmon nigiri but it's not noted on the menu nor do they tell you when you order it. Neither my husband nor my girls like lemon on their sushi. We had 5 adults and even though we ordered together our food was staggered by about 10 minutes per person, which was pretty ridiculous. Two of the rolls I ordered didn't say they had anything spicy on them but they were both spicy. I ended up sending one back and while they didn't make a big deal out of it they clearly weren't happy. The appetizers we tried were very good but overall the sushi was mediocre. We definitely won't be coming back the next time we visit. read more

I wanted to like this place, but it is really just 3-stars "A-OK" to me. I'm not really a fan to say it's a 4-star. BF and I came here for lunch, we sat at the bar and had Emanuel as our chef. He was attentive and made everything we asked. The fish that day was good and every thing we ordered was edible. Now the reason why I didn't fall in love this with place is what other fellow Yelper Phong H. said, "Teriyaki sauce everything". He's not kidding! It was on all the rolls, with the nigiri, and even in the sushi rice. Sushi rice, I feel is the make it or break it point in most places. And with Kei, though everything else was good, that teriyaki sauce in everything (especially in the rice), is the break it point. I had a lot of left over rice, not because I didn't eat, but because it literally fell apart when I picked up with my chopsticks (probably from all that teriyaki sauce in it). What I did like is the salmon skin, it was very crispy, but it did have bones (which is a first for me). I think I'll give it some more time before I try this place again, but for now I probably won't be back. read more

Welcome to Reno. Land of all-you-can-eat sushi, apparently. I'm told that's just how things work here, and this was my baptism into the religion of fish aplenty. Well--that's not entirely true. I once went to a Chinese buffet that served sushi. That ended not well. But I've never been to a place where you just keep ordering the things and they just keep making the things. So we sauntered in rather late, and bellied up to the bar. The place was kind quiet on a Wednesday night, but when you want the attention of the dude making your bottomless sushi, that's a good thing. First up, was a bunch of nigiri. Now, for me, this is where the genius of AYCE comes in. Nigiri is the bee's knees, but I don't often order it because it doesn't make the economical sense that a roll does, in terms of bangs and bucks. But if you get a roll here, you're saddled with all the pieces. Nigiri, though, is a couple of pieces of glorious simple sushi. And so the simple sushi began. They also have specialty nigiri, which is a little more fancy, but still one bite wonders. I'm not under any illusions that an AYCE can make their money on the toppest of shelf fish, but I'm here to say that my expectations were exceeded by their fish. Each one had its own flavor (holla at me, hamachi and escolar!) and the specialty pieces had enough razzmatazz to keep me interested but be true to the fish. Also, on a total side note, can you imagine my complete surprise just now when I wrote razzmatazz and it didn't get autocorrected? Apparently it's a real word. I digress... I did try a few rolls, and I wish I could remember what ones. Good ones, I think? I know the Rainbow Roll was one, because I'm a little boring but it's a sure fave of mine. To end the night, I got the dessert roll with mango. I mean, it's all good stuff, but the disconnect between regular sushi and dessert sushi is a bit much in my mind; your mouth doesn't expect it and it tripped out my tastebuds. The service was fire. I mean, the dude was RIGHT THERE and we just casually mentioned wanting something and boom, it appeared. I know this can't be the case on a hoppin' busy night, but whereas I had imagined slow service to slow your (sushi) roll, I couldn't have been more wrong. We were there well after closing and they kept serving. Sorry about that... but once everything was cleaned we skedaddled. Side note, skedaddled is also a legit word! What a way to eat, Reno. After passing this place numerous times, we finally broke down and gave it a try. Typically going to a different sushi bar is a let down but not the case here. The restaurant itself is beautiful and elegant. The sultry dim lighted decor could have easily passed for an fancy upscale restaurant. It was very inviting and I loved the oversized geisha photos on the wall. We were served at the bar with Candy. She was friendly and inclusive. I love when chefs engage there customers. It certainly heightens the dining experience and makes it less awkward. She gave insight, offered suggestions, and joked with us. We didn't have to interrupt her to ask for our next rolls because of how attentive she was. This is something that the majority of chefs lack anymore. Keep up the good work Candy! Now to the food. Pretty darn delicious. The menu is innovative and fresh in comparison to the standard AYCE sushi bar. Yes, there are still some standard rolls but why do that when you can have a roll with an egg roll inside? We decided to avoid all our standard favorites and go for some creative creations. They did not disappoint. To quickly break it down, the Ceviche is phenomenal! We had both the roll and appetizers... The appetizer wins! The Ceviche roll is tasty but lacks a crunch. The dragon balls are a must try if you love jalapeños like I do. The baked mussels offer a totally different flavor from the usual and are excellent. We also enjoyed the iris, macho macho, the optimist, kei tuna. I lied, We actually did have a couple staple items- the Mickey and the Donald nigiri. They do have some unique dessert rolls that We were not ready to try. Only 3 choices for ice cream- Green tea, vanilla and coconut. Of course they were out of the only one we wanted- coconut. I asked for orange in plum wine as a refreshing palette cleanser since they were out of coconut ice cream. Always a solid go to dessert when you are stuffed to the gills. My only criticisms are that they use a lot of rice in their rolls and some rolls are so big it's daunting and you can't try as many. Some rolls may have had more rice than filling and lacking some texture but the flavors were on point. Food comes out a little slower than what we are used to at AYCE but we didn't mind it too much. I'd really wanted to try this place out because they serve Walu (Escolar) fish which no sushi restaurant in Reno have and to my surprise, it was delicious! It was buttery and melted in my mouth. So good!! Their baked mussels are different from usual sushi restaurants because they seasoned them before baking, so much flavor. They have a variety of different rolls and nigiri specialty. The owner was kind enough to make his creation of salmon ceviche for us to try. Yummy!! Since it was my first time here, the waitress explained that they have two separate menu: all you can eat and al la cart. Found by mistake and glad I did. Upon entry I was immediately met by staff and immediately seated at the bar. I ordered my drink and Miso Soup, both arrived quickly. The Miso Soup without question, the best I have found in the valley, fresh and full of flavor, the fresh mushrooms made the difference. There isn't any Tofu in the soup, which I am good with, not a fan. The Nigiri was also very fresh and good size, in fact everything is in abundance. The Salmon Skin Hand Roll also very good but could have been wrapped a little tighter, started falling apart almost immediately. The Godzilla roll is the reason for the 4 star, they put it in the microwave after coming from the kitchen and cut into slices, there is a lot of sweet mayo dressing on it and it was extremely hot. By the time it cooled enough to eat the dressing soaked the crust and just didn't earn a 5th star. The service was extremely good, quick, professional and attentive. The restaurant is clean, with a fresh new look. There is plenty of seating, the bar chairs are very close, touching, so hopefully your friends are slim. Oof- this was my second time at Kei Sushi. My first experience at this restaurant was not so great, so I wanted to make sure I tried again before I left a review. Unfortunately, my return experience was consistent with that of my first. I came with a friend on a Sunday to satiate our long-ongoing sushi craving. Both times that I visited Kei Sushi, there were not very many people at the restaurant. We were greeted and seated quickly. We did AYCE sushi, and this restaurant is unique because there are no forms. Instead, the waiters/waitresses come by to take down your order. This led to a lot of forgotten appetizers (I had to order multiple miso soups on such a gloomy day!) and delays. The first time, we didn't get dessert due to the change in waiter and lack of communication. Both times, we also had to wait for a very long time to receive our check and our waters were not refilled. While the decor and ambiance is grand and inviting, the service turned me away from returning in the future. Now, for the food! I was personally excited to visit Kei due to the numerous vegetarian options. However, the majority of the food does not taste fresh. Be prepared for a tremendous amount of chewing! The seaweed that the sushi was wrapped in was too chewy. The edamame was stale, and undercooked but covered with heaps of salt. The veggie rolls contained too much rice, and the rice did not taste fresh either. Kei Sushi's redeeming savior was the delicious, rich miso soup. It contains mushrooms and soft tofu, and I ordered several of them. We were brought dessert this time. The mochi costs extra, so we chose a green tea ice cream. It had a weird aftertaste, almost like ice cream with freezer burn. Long story short, the service and poor quality of food (and consistently so) have discouraged us from returning. read more

We were super excited to check out this beautiful AYCE sushi spot. Located in a large strip mall there is plenty of parking. The decor of Kei was well done with a modern and upscale feel but nothing over the top or gaudy. Service was awesome, everyone was friendly and food was quick and visually well presented. Now for the food, we tried multiple appetizers and they were all quite delicious. My favorites were the mussels and the fireballs. The sushi, my favorite roll was the volcano roll as it seemed to have the correct ratio of fillings and toppings to rice. We found all of the rolls we ordered to be dense or even hard. I am not sure if this was because they were compressed to hard or because they didn't have that much filling inside them. Regardless we tried at least 6-7 rolls and we asked for half rolls to allow us a chance to sample more of the large menu. We also tried the Miami desert roll and we did not enjoy it. Once again there was not enough filling to overcome the rice. The coconut and green tea ice creams were awesome though. I would be willing to give this place another try because we really loved everything about this place except for the actual sushi maybe we just caught them on an off night. Pretty confused by these reviews... the sushi was terrifying at times. My wife and I literally couldn't eat one of the rolls without gagging (Ninja). Service was ok and I think they are trying their best for what it is, but this is not a classic typical sushi bar. Think Americanized sushi with Mayo sauce on everything. I've found my new favorite sushi place in town. From start to finish, everything about my first experience here was outstanding. We came in on a Wednesday during lunch and the restaurant had a few patrons, but was overall pretty empty. We were sat right away and our drink orders were taken while we peruses the menu. One thing I appreciate about this place that they don't do at a lot of other sushi restaurants in town is that they hand take your order, writing every roll down. This makes the experience much more personable and for the first time probably EVER that we received every roll I ordered (at least 1 usually gets lost in the shuffle when sitting at a table) And the sushi was just as outstanding as the service. The rice was rolled tight and perfectly seasoned with not too much around the rolls, the fish was extremely fresh, and the selection was expansive and creative. (Although some rolls were cut a little unevenly, this is my only quip with the sushi making) They also use high quality soy sauce, rather than Kikkoman, bake their mussels super crispy, and offer coconut ice cream for dessert with coconut flakes in it. I only went for lunch & ordered from the lunch rolls and that alone got the big review. I'm definitely going back for dinner next time. The service was excellent, my drink was topped off like every 3 sips & the dirty plates disappeared into the land of rolls done eaten. Visited 3/1/19 - While we were on the other side of town, we decided to pop into Kei Sushi. The place is nicely decorated, and we were sat at the bar promptly. We visited during dinner hours, so we ordered accordingly. We didn't experience any issues, but nothing about the menu was a stand-out either. The service was fine, and so was the timing of the rolls. Reno/Sparks has sooooo many AYCE anymore, they're either amazing, really bad or OK. For us, our experience was just OK. Good, not great, but not bad either. Because it's literally the opposite side of town for us, it's not likely to be our new regular spot. read more

I used to like this place initially but recently I felt like they keep increasing the size of the roll when they think you are ordering more. Also, one of the times I visited, one of the rolls had a raw fish taste which I have never experienced in any sushi restaurants and their soy sauce was extremely salty, when we asked they gave us a different bottle which tasted the same, from them we stopped going to this place. First off I love their carson location and I think this might have even been tastier!!!!!! Yelp 25 % off ayce with yelp check in, score!!!! The inside is so pretty and well decorated, and I love the location! It's so so so close to my condo, and traders Joe's where I shop. So after mom and I went to traders we squeezed in during the last 30 minutes till close, and they were totally cool about it. I recognized the owner from the carson location in the back. The rolls omg just that perfect thin layer to cover but not over shadow the seaweed and fish, stick and sweet and tangy (rice white vinegar and sugar, held together seamlessly on all the rolls. Mom ordered the Fuji and said the raw fish was some of the freshest she has had anywhere local, including minatio and hinko. The shrimp inside had a lovely crunch with out being too oily. I order three rolls and loved the presentation on all of them as well as the spicy level. The cici with no salmon (they were totally cool about it too) had wicked hot white sauce on it spicier than sriracha, but I loved it!!! The scallops were super fresh and the other tangy sauce paired nicely with the ripe avocado and the cream cheese was a needed to balance out the spice level. The moon dog poppers had crunch jalapeño with the seeds taken out so it was much less spicy than the other roll, paired well with spicy crab and a crispy tempura case, and cream cheese filled innards. Then the two next rolls were sooooo artistically done both my mom and I were taken back. Plated on craved wood the sauce designs were truly magical as you can see in the pictures!!! The volcano had the delicately fried out side, and was pipping hot, with the soft eggy sweet tamago inside and huge sweet scallops on top with a spice sauce and sauce all around the plate to drag through. The samurai was prob my fav. The huge chunks of pecans were such a lovely bit of nutty texture, to the cream cheese and fluffy fried shrimp, topped with again huge chunky scallops and black sesame seeds with 2 creamy spice sauces. Then again plated like a a piece from a museum!! I can't not wait to go back and try more of the unique rolls and see the art they dish up. read more
