For spending over $400 on primarily sashimi and tartare for 2 people, we waited 20 minutes before anyone came to take our food order, another 30 minutes for the first 3 entrees, which we finished in less than 10 minutes bc they were small bites. A review from a 50-something, i.e., not the target customer for Kessaku: To get to the restaurant, you valet your car in front of The National, walk in, and follow the signs to the elevators labeled for Monarch and Kessaku. A nice young person will tell you to get off at the 49th floor and then walk up a flight of stairs to get to Kessaku. Even through your popping ears, you can tell when you're getting close to the 49th floor because of the rapidly increasing party noise. When the elevator doors ding open, you're greeted by a blast of music and people yelling for their drinks. (This is the Monarch part.) Then you climb the very narrow stairs up to Kessaku. Along the way, you dodge the people coming down. Because you're polite, you flatten yourself against the wall to let them pass, and then you keep climbing. Once you get to the top, you find yourself in a small foyer with a host stand, where another nice young person will tell you that your table is not quite ready. She says something else too, perhaps about waiting at the bar, but you can't hear her over the music so you just offer her a blank smile and wait. Fortunately, there's plenty of people-watching to do, and after all, it's only a few minutes. After a bit, she takes you through the dimly lit dining room to your table, which is right next to the windows. You have a spectacular nighttime view of Dallas. The table is really small, but there's only the two of you, and the close quarters might mean that you can hear each other. Except you can't. The room is astoundingly crowded and loud at 8:15 on a Friday night, so when your server approaches with menus, you take them gratefully with a shouted "thanks" and hope that's not a nonsensical response to whatever she was saying to you. You order some cocktails from the menu. They arrive quickly. The Kyoto Old Fashioned is delicious. The Sakura's 75 is too. While you wait for the sushi, you observe the room and come to understand that you're in a viciously escalating echo chamber of noise. It's no one's fault; person A can't make herself understood to person B, so she yells louder, and so person C has to yell louder than that to make himself understood to person D, and you start to feel as if you've wandered into a Sonic Youth concert with nigiri. The sushi is fine-to-good, and the drinks are excellent. Our server is lovely and professional. But Kessaku is not a place to get sushi and drinks. It's a place to get drinks that happens to have sushi. And it's a place that reminds you, not for the first time, that you're too old for some of this. read more

Kessaku is a lounge vibe with a beautiful view on the 50th floor! We ended up here after a fabulous dinner at the Monarch. It was late so I decided on a girly drink while we checked out the fireworks all over the city. It was truly the mostly beautiful sight to see on 4th of July weekend! I recommend the Fromage Noir, which was a blend of spiced pear, lemon, goat cheese (!) and gin. I was a tad skeptical to have goat cheese in an adult beverage but it was so marvelous and tasty! Something I would surely order again. For bites they have a beautiful array of sushi and sashimi to go with whatever beverage you desire. I recommend checking this place out on a date night or a fun little night cap! The ambience is dark and very intimate, so I recommend dressing nicely! I will be back when I try some food on the menu. Quick summary, just facts: 8:15 PM reservation Were seated until 8:50 1 single round of drinks offered all night 1st set of drinks were wrong. Courses were not brought until we complained to manager. Canceled half of our order, got the check and left. Gave up at 10:45 PM. Overall left really upset, felling like having squandered a Saturday night. Will definitely come back to Monarch, absolutely not to Kessaku. read more

Overall an unimpressive experience. Upon arrival at the hotel valet, we were told that Kessaku has a separate valet in front of the hotel which was completely unmarked and ambiguous. Not a huge deal, but annoying. We then enter the hotel doors and we were greeted by the restaurants welcome crew who offered my wife and me sparkling wine before we entered the elevator. A nice touch! We arrive at the restaurant(s) and we were surprised at the Vegas atmosphere-- the female hosts wore tight dresses or crop tops and were obviously flirtatious with some guests. Didn't expect this vibe at a Dallas spot and we felt a little uncomfortable with the attire. Our waitress wasn't very attentive to us and we could hardly hear her due to her mask and the super loud hip hop music (Vegas vibe). The drinks were average at best and nowhere near their price range. Maybe an off-night for the bartender? Their menu is annoying in that there isn't an obvious distinction between appetizers and mains. Sushi wasn't impressive and I feel I got much more value out of Uchi than here. If you call yourself a restaurant and you can't comfortably fit 2 cocktails and 2 plates, you have problems. The restaurant isn't handicapped accessible. It's on the 50th floor and the elevator stops at the 49th. I'd thrown out my back earlier and when I realized I needed to walk up a flight of stairs I almost cried. Likewise when I realized how low all the furniture is. I'm only 45, but get off my lawn. If this were billed as a bar that serves a little sushi, my expectations would have been much different and my impression would have been better. But this is called a restaurant. If you want to get dressed up and drink cocktails and high end liquor, with some sushi to keep you from getting too sloshed, this is a great option. We ended up flagging down multiple servers to get something as simple as a straw since our designated server was too busy chatting with the bartender and effectively avoiding us. It was not that busy when we initially arrived yet it took 2-3 tries to obtain any aspect of our order and ended up resorting to asking other servers walking around to deliver basic requests for things such as water and utensils. Our designated server was quiet and frankly impolite by not saying anything to us and just dropping our orders onto the table as if this was some fast food restaurant. Food, cocktails, view and service were all stellar. It wasn't super crowded on a Saturday night here which is surprising to me - I actually enjoyed my experience here more than at Monarch. We had the tuna toro tartare appetizer (a special, but there is also a regular tuna tartare on the menu) and it was light and delicious. I also loved the nigiri sushi and the hamachi roll. The salmon avocado roll was just average. All cocktails were delicious. I think the prices were reasonable for the experience. The only negative was they turned on the AC and it was very cold. It felt more like a mixture between a cocktail lounge and a nightclub than anything else. The music was very loud as were some other (noticeably intoxicated) attendees. It was a strain to hear anyone talk. The waitresses were dressed like cocktail waitresses at a Vegas nightclub...not saying that's a bad thing but not at all what was expected. The actual dining experience (minus the food) was disappointing. We couldn't hear our waitress when she tried to explain menu options. The menu doesn't distinguish between apps and main courses...that was annoying. We also had to wait for long periods of time between courses and certain people got their food well before others. Also we had someone take our jackets to another area but had wait an extra 20 mins after paying our bill before we could get them back. I really wanted to like this place. But....no. The atmosphere is great. The view is great. The sushi is two times the price of the place down the street, and the rice was falling apart in the nigiri. No one told us which sushi was which. They just put it down. I get, this is mostly a cocktail bar, but if you are going to charge that much for your bar snacks, they should be outstanding. Last but not least, I ordered a bottle of wine. There were two bottles of the varietal, one $70 more then the other. I ordered and pointed to the cheaper one. They brought out the more expensive one, and my bad, I didn't notice. Why did no one question which bottle I was ordering? The waitress said I pointed at the more expensive one. Whatever.
