Khao Soi Thaï is by far our favorite Thai food restaurant in the area. The food is consistently delicious with perfect flavors on Thai staples with a particular mention of the soup that inspired the restaurant's name. A definite must try. Service is always polite and friendly even if it's sometimes difficult to communicate by phone (English is my second language so thick accents can be tricky for me). Even if better than most comparable places, the ambiance is mid. We often take-out but it's definitely inviting enough to eat there if we feel like it. I'm southeast Asian and I Just ordered from this restaurant two days ago for take out because my favorite place Sri Siam happened to close on Wednesday. Unfortunately, this place didn't meet the original Thai standards. We ordered the papaya salad and it was way too garlicky and the papaya was not crunchy at all. Very soggy and definitely lack the lime, fish sauce taste to it as well as peanuts. Papaya salad is suppose to be the main star of the show, not the garlic. Ordered the fried chicken wings and it was soaked in sauce that were not crispy at all. Decent. Third, we ordered the beef salad and requested for mild, turns out it was very spicy. I think the ratio they're referring is off. Something they need to work on. No Thai beef salad uses lettuce, and celery leaves, however we use mint, Thai basil, crushed rice powder, mint, cilantro or coriander, red onions (Nom Tok). Not authentic at all! Rude customer service on the phone even while taking the order and after I picked up my order, pad Thai I decided to take it in the car. First of all the color turned me off. Why is it pink ?? And I know it has eggs but it tasted fresh and I just couldn't eat it even though I was very hungry. Wow! I've been dying to try Khao Soi Thai since visiting Thailand years ago, and the hype is real! Khao Soi is a dish I discovered in Chiang Mai and was instantly obsessed and have hunted for since I came home from that trip. I've tried it at various Thai restaurants throughout Los Angeles, but this is the holy grail - the best Khao Soi that I've found in LA by far! The restaurant is located in an outdoor strip mall in Sherman Oaks, there was tons of parking, and a no frills ambiance where the food is the star. Below is what we tried: Fried Chicken - 5 Stars. Not your typical fried chicken, this was light and full of flavor while the chicken was incredibly moist. This is served with a sweet chili sauce on the side that complemented this dish perfectly. Papaya Salad - 4 1/2 Stars. I was looking for something healthy to help offset with the fried chicken, and this light and flavorful salad did the trick. Khao Soi - 5+ Stars. Perfection! The curry broth was rich in flavor, the egg noodles cooked perfectly, and the wontons on top crispy and light. This dish just melts together to create the perfect spoonful. I still want more! In the major need of some good food options, we decided to try this place in studio city, and we were quite impressed! I am not very familiar with Thai food locations in the area so trying to find a good option through Yelp and came across this place. We got the chow mein, massaman curry, and Thai iced tea! The standout here was definitely the curry. It felt a little more soupy then most other curries from other Thai food, but that texture in this case helped give more flavors to the rest of the dish. The chow mein was pretty balanced and fresh. I think the Thai iced teas were delicious, but you get only a small mason jar full. The service was good! Friendly, yet very busy during this time due to all the more take out orders. I have gone to this restaurant more then 5 times and always try different dishes, I have tried their famous Khao Soi curry, egg rolls, drunken noodle, pad C-Ew with chicken and shrimp, Tom Yum Soup with all the fresh yummy ingredients, Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp and other fine, delicious, dishes. However, every time I go there whether it is just by myself or with others, service does NOT meet my/our expectations. No matter if they are busy or only have one or two people in there. They are NOT friendly and rush you to a point that you don't get to finish your train of thought. And walk away while you are still in the middle of your sentence. Which I think that is pretty rude and disrespectful to me and to my friends and family. The young girl with the pony tail that is at the front taking your orders doesn't even look at you to see and hear what you have got to say. Has a CONDESCENDING ATTITUDE. I asked for her name from another employee and they said her name is AMY!!! Somebody should have a nice, proper talk with her to have a better attitude while she is talking to customers and put a smile on her face. She might look just a little more prettier. I usually eat at the restaurant, but somehow on my receipt it always says TO GO ORDER!! That also comes from not listening and paying close attention. We typically order the Tom yum noodle with bbq pork and the portion is large enough to split across like three people. We also like th pad see ew with beef. Sometimes when the chef is feelin it you may get a bit of smoky wok fire flavor that absolutely kicks this dish up from ok to oKAYYYYYYYY. We also like the krapow basil. This one comes with a spicy warning but it was also quite hot. I like spicy so it was all good in the hood. There is enough sauce in this one to add additional veggies if you need to tone down the spice level. We've also tried the name sake khao soi noodle but I just didn't see the appeal. Fresh cold bean sprouts on top of noodle soup made the soup get lukewarm but the server took it back to kitchen and heated up the soup for us. Hell no! Someone needs to report unfair pricing scam going on here. The menu says one thing, but then when you get your bill, it's MORE EXPENSIVE. The number one thing that pissed me off the most about this place had to be the horrid, decomposing who knows what smell, coming out of the kitchen. When that kitchen door flung open so our waitress could bring us our food, right then and there I should have gotten up and walked out. Let me go back to the beginning, and the hassle we had trying to get the waitress's attention. Keep in mind, we were the only two people sitting down inside the restaurant. So she finally comes over, after we hoot and hollered for her to come over, like we were bugging her trying to get our orders taken. WTF!? THEN, I had a fight with the lady that was trying to take my order telling her that the menu clearly says 12 pieces of "spicy fried chicken wings" is $12.95. So then she goes on to tell me that they don't serve 12 pieces anymore, you have to order eight pieces. I said what the heck is the difference if you just add 4 more pieces... and make it an order of 12 total? She continued to argue that they don't offer a 12-piece spicy chicken wings on their menu, which I clearly pointed out to her more than a few times by pointing to it on the actual menu. Then when the bill came, she charged me $13.95 for eight pieces. Hello?!?! The menu says one thing, then she charged me something else? Never coming back here again, that's for sure! Oh, and another thing, she kept insisting that I had to order a protein with the papaya salad. So I opted for the shrimp (which the menu says it already comes with shrimp). Some of the best Thai food I've had in Los Angeles! The signature Khao Soi soup is amazing- it's a peanut curry soup with noodles and chicken. Their Thai fried chicken is also fabulous- very crispy and flavorful. Those two things are outstanding and we order them every time, but everything else we've had has been first rate! The restaurant is attractive but small. They have an outdoor patio that is nice when the weather is good. For friends who value cleanliness in a restaurant, avoid this place. It was a terrible experience--dirty utensils, and even after replacing them twice, there were still greasy fingerprints on them. The owner's attitude was extremely rude. When I suggested that they check the utensils for cleanliness before serving, she was very hostile and refused to accept my advice. She said the dirty utensils were the machine's fault, not theirs, and added, "I'll just replace them for you." I was simply trying to offer constructive feedback, and there was no need to treat a customer so harshly. The food than was authentic you're going to get on Ventura Blvd. But this last time it will our last. The restaurant had changed ownership and all new cook's and way over price now. Food that was ordered this last time. KHAO SOI: This use to be fantastic authentic. Now it was horrible. The dish was water down and taste less. My daughter didn't like it and so did i. Plus they didn't give us the pickled mustard, red onions and lime. ( Didn't bother to take a picture of it) DRUNKEN NOODLE: Wasn't that good. GRA POW MOO KROB: This was my favorite dish to get here with a fried egg. But this time it was so SWEET and bad. The kicker was that dish was $9.95 they change $4 more for the Crispy Pork and another $3 for a fried egg. Who the hell charges $3 for one fried egg where I can buy a dozen for $3. Charging $17 for this poor quality dish it's a no no.. Sorry Khao Soi but you just lost a loyal customer. To the manager response, for a good three years of eating here not once that I ever paid over $12 for a gra pow dish and you can taste the difference .As for the sushi response I don't mind paying top dollar when the sushi is great. read more

First time here. We walked In and there were about three or four tables taken inside. We opted to sit outside. No one was out there. It was a chilly night. There are no heat lamps in the outdoor dining area. It would have been nice if there was heat lamps above or standing. That would totally be a plus! They were busy (Sat night) with to go orders and the phone was ringing non stop. It was nice to see how busy they were. They are short staffed and I noticed a help wanted sign (if anyone is looking for a job). We ordered hot jasmine tea. That helped with being outside. For our food we ordered khoa soi curry with chicken breast, an order of fried chicken, and green papaya salad with grilled shrimp. The spice level we chose for both the curry and the papaya salad was a four on a scale of 1 to 5. Four is considered spicy... And it was. Good spicy level if you like spicy. I could've totally done 3.5 as well :-p The salad came first. It was delicious. The only bummer was that there were only two shrimp. It would've been nice if there were four shrimp. The dressing was great! Good amount of salad too! Great portion. The curry and fried chicken came out shortly after. And man oh man!!! Both dishes looked amazing! And they tasted that way too! The curry came in a big bowl (enough for three people if you're ordering other dishes, and perfect for 2 people doing the same). I asked for two small bowls and a spoon beforehand. I divided it up between the two of us. It was perfect! Nice and spicy. Good noodles, amount of chicken, and the broth was excellent! Spicy!!!! GROSS. I recently visited Khao Soi Thai with high hopes. 600+ reviews and 4.5 stars? I thought for sure it'd be a great experience. I really wanted to like the food, but unfortunately, everything was terrible. There were flies everywhere and the tables were sticky and dirty. We should have left immediately, but we wanted to give the place a chance. My friend and I ordered the fried chicken and pad thai. The fried chicken came out super greasy. It wasn't crunchy at all but MUSHY. The batter was disgusting and the chicken itself was so tasteless. I think they used frozen chicken but it was obvious that they didn't fry it long enough. The sauce they gave had gunk floating in it and looked like it was reused from another customer's meal. We only ate maybe a bite or two before putting our forks down. We hate wasting food but we could not bring ourselves to eat. At least the pad thai was edible, but it tasted like an Asian version of spaghetti with watered-down ketchup. We politely let the waitress know about our meal but she did not care. I don't understand how there are so many good reviews. I wish I took photos to support my review. Khao soi is a casual eatery located in a strip mall. I tried to find parking in front of the restaurant but there weren't many spots so I decided to find street parking, which wasn't too difficult. I Came on a Sunday for lunch and was seated immediately. Ordered the mild spicy khao soi with seafood, which is a Thai curry noodle soup. It wasn't too busy just yet so food was brought out relatively quick. The khao soi was so good! The soup was so flavorful and the portion was pretty big so I had enough for leftovers later.
