But... The taste however did not match the foods appearance. The katsu shrimp was tough and chewy, the tartar sauce was a bit sour tasting and the katsu sauce ok. My husband got the kalbi. Again it looked good but the sauce was over powering and meat tough. Mac salad was unremarkable. It's the first time we could not finish our food. $50 for the 2 plates and we couldn't even make ourselves finish it. **just a side note we ate at Kalei's lunchbox in Wailuku and it was superb! The pricing was the biggest issue: - $17.50 for an appetizer of only five wings. - $35.50 for a kalbi plate that amounted to roughly 2 1/2 ribs, chopped into seven or eight small pieces. - $19 for a small serving of mochiko chicken bites. - The kids' sliders were just two tiny burgers on Hawaiian sweet rolls. For two entrées, one appetizer, and two non-alcoholic drinks, our total came to more than $110. That is difficult to justify when both the portion sizes and overall service fell short. Bottom line We understand that Maui is expensive and that restaurants face high operating costs. Still, charging premium prices should come with generous portions, consistently good food, and genuinely hospitable service. Aloha Mixed Plate may have a beautiful new space, but at these prices, it feels overhyped and not like a good value.
