We got there and waited a few minutes before getting a table. The room was packed on a Saturday night. Half the group got a sushi dinner set and the other half ordered sushi rolls. Service was quick and attentive and food came out relatively fast. I'm no sushi expert but there rolls tasted fresh and everyone seemed to enjoy the meal. Some folks at the table were comparing this to sushi gen, but I mean, you can't really do that. If you're in the neighborhood and want decent sushi, you should stop by. I've got to be really careful going to really good sushi restaurants. The taste-buds are overwhelmed the great quality and flavor of the fish, the mind forgets about the pricetag, more and more sushi is ordered, and before you know it, you slide your credit card over to the waiter too afraid to see the damage on bill. But it was all worth it!! The sushi here is fresh and tasty. One of my first times trying toro, and I fell in love. The toro here is tops. Melts in your mouth with its fatty tuna toro-ness. I tried others of course. Salmon, Mackerel, Tuna, Uni. All were great pieces as well. The service was excellent. The servers were very attentive and answered all our questions. Quality fish, great presentation! We spotted this place while driving on 2nd street and decided to try it. Sat by the sushi bar and Chef Peter was very friendly and informative. It was cool seeing him plate the dishes so nicely too. We had: *Toro sushi: very velvety, topped with fresh wasabi and special brewed soy sauce *Fatty yellowtail: very yummy as well *Salmon: yummy *Smoked octopus carpaccio: very thin slices of octopus with some spices and oil. Seaweed in the middle. It had a bit of a kick but very good *Garlic albacore: soo garlicky and delicious A bit pricey but worth it for the quality. First encountered Kihon at the Long Beach Restaurant Week Launch. I was impressed by what they were serving -- an octopus appetizer with yuzu kosho. I returned a few months later for dinner and had a very enjoyable meal. We wanted to take advantage of the small plates/tapas they had on offer. My favorite dishes were the smoked octopus with yuzu kosho -- the item I had tried before. I also loved the seared salmon with crispy spinach, and the omakase sushi was delicious. I really liked the flavor combinations Chef put together in each bite. My son loved the crispy rice topped with spicy tuna -- although the tuna was not really spicy at all. He also loved the short rib dish. The restaurant gets busy later in the evening, so if you're like me, you should go early. read more

*Dine Long Beach Week* Roommate and I were surprised to find that Kihon was participating in Long Beach Restaurant Week. They were offering a special prix fixe 3-course dinner for $30 a person. Choice of Appetizer/Beverage: I choose the creamy popcorn shrimp tempura. This was absolutely a delight as it was crunchy and savory too. Choice of Entree: I went with the original tonkotsu ramen and baked crab roll. The crab roll was made with soy paper. The ramen broth had great flavor but it only had one slice of char su. Usually the ramen costs $13, so I would not consider this a great deal as it only comes with one slice of pork. An additional dish of char su (2 slices) costs $2.50. The entree also was accompanied by a fresh side salad. Choice of Dessert: Vanilla Gelato. Nothing special, but it was a nice touch to the end of the meal. My roommate wanted a special request, he wanted a green tea tempura ice cream. The staff happily obliged and my roommate was satisfied with his dessert. Overall, a great dining experience. The prix fixe special was an inexpensive way of tasting Kihon's menu. The waitstaff took good care of us too. I would definitely come back here in the future. Finally! A solid sushi spot in the city of Long Beach! A friend recommended Kihon for dinner and I am so happy he did! The two of us dined here on a Tuesday and it was fantastic! It was quite busy for a Tuesday night. We sat at the sushi bar and was well taken care of by Chef Peter. Here's what we had: smoked octopus carpaccio Jumbo scallop with kiwi Black cod Golden eye snapper, black sea bream, and amberjack sushi tuna sashimi braised short ribs soft shell crab The highlights were the nigiris. The fish were delicate and SO fresh. I love that Chef Peter explained how each piece should be eaten. I'm still thinking of the Golden eye snapper and sea bream! The smoked octopus carpaccio is a must get. I love the presentation and there were just perfect amount of lemon oil and yuzu pepper on each bite. The jumbo scallop with kiwi was amazing! Didn't know kiwi worked well with raw scallops! Another hit was the black cod! The black cod is marinated in miso for 36 hours and then grilled to perfection! This hot dish was divine! They've been opened for 10 months and I can tell you they aren't going anywhere. Currently open only for dinner though there are plans for lunch sometime in the Summer. I first visited this location back when it was Naples Sushi. I really didn't get a "bang for my buck," at Naples and didn't leave a particularly positive review. I got a message from Kihon saying that they had switched owners, so I thought, hey why not try this place out? It helped that I got a 30% percent discount coupon in the mail. That was pretty sweet. So the BF and I went in on a random Tuesday evening and there were a couple groups inside already, which is always a good sign. We were seated immediately at a table of our choosing. The first thing I noticed was that the ambiance was a lot nicer. It was definitely casual, but the wooden flooring and the cute hanging tortoise-shell lamps and nice paintings gave the restaurant a comfortable feeling, whereas the previous restaurant was all dark (I like to be able to see what i'm eating, especially if it's seafood). So I already figured the ratings would be higher just based on the "feel" of the place. Our waitress was named Jeanette (SP?) and she was really nice. We started off with some water, and when I checked in, we got a free lemonade. The lemonade just came out of a can, but hey...it's free. Who is complaining?! We perused the menu and our only disappointment was that they didn't have any udon, which we love at sushi restaurants. But there were some other great choices for rolls, sashimi, and tapas. We ended up getting the Yellowtail Collar app, sake sashimi, a rainbow roll, and a creamy shrimp tempura roll. Jeanette was really nice and asked if we wanted the rolls to come out all at once, or one at a time. This was the first time I've ever been asked that at a sushi restaurant so I was pleasantly surprised. We opted to just have the food get to the table when it was ready as opposed to all out at once. We were hungry! The yellowtail came out first with a ponzu sauce. One word: amazing. It was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Perfectly cooked, super soft and just the right amount of burnt-ish skin and salt. The ponzu sauce was nice too, similar to what you might use when dipping tempura. They also have two choices of soy sauce- regular & low sodium. Anyway, I would def. recommend the yellow-tail. It was so yummy! I could eat it every day! Then we got our sake sashimi. Presentation was lovely. The plating was done well and obviously I'm an expert on plating because I watch masterchef (lol jk). The sashimi itself was decent. Nice, cold, a good "bite," and buttery. Not the best I've had, but it was up there with the good ones. Then came the rainbow roll. This was the only roll we weren't too satisfied with. There wasn't a lot of avocado (only one piece out of 7 had avocado on top), and that fish didn't seem as fresh as the sake sashimi. We still ate it all, but all I could taste was the CA roll underneath. Lastly, the creamy shrimp tempura roll. Another word: BOMB. So good. The shrimp was fried to a light perfection. It wasn't overdone with too much batter. And the spicy tuna inside the roll was delish! This was my second favorite next to the yellowtail. I'd definitely recommend this one. So yeah, 4 stars. A pretty pleasant experience with fabulous customer service from Jeanette. I hope to be back to try some other rolls, but definitely not the rainbow roll, unless they magically improve on it somehow. read more

We have dined at the sushi bar on date night, brought family and sat at tables, and also ordered takeout during the pandemic and the quality is always the same! Our favorite is ordering sashimi from their sushi menu. We have had the Toro tasting, yellowtail, king salmon, Japanese mackerel, halibut, uni/sea urchin, cod, eel sushi, and various rolls! The ramen is made to order and from what I understand the broth is made fresh! Don't be intimidated by the long line because the wait is well worth it! Best sushi in Long Beach! HIGH quality fish. If you're into sashimi and sushi, this place is dynamite. The salmon and crispy spinach is amazing and they have this toro tasting sometimes as a special which in melt in your mouth delicious. If you're only into the super American crunch/cream cheese/ground up fish rolls, leave this place to the real foodies so it doesn't get more crowded. (Even though they do have several roll options too, just not like 50 like some other places). COVID seating is nice and outdoor with umbrellas. Great, fresh sushi. We tried everything on the specials board, which included toro, hamachi, japanese mackerel, spanish mackerel, ruby snapper, uni, monkfish liver and a couple others I'm forgetting. The main thing to note is that each order was a full dish, with 6-8 good size pieces of fish, and many more on the monkfish liver(s). Also worth noting is that the price was reasonable: ~$15 each. For the sushi lovers, Kihon is strong on the actual fish, although they offer a selection of rolls, too. For the non-sushi lovers, they have bento boxes, teriyaki bowls, and ramen, which is all again, reasonably priced. Bonus: a decent sake list with by-the-glass options. read more

Came here on a cold night and got seated at the sushi bar right away. They took our orders fairly quickly and brought everything in a very timed fashion, making sure not to rush us. We had the White Russian Roll, the Sashimi Dinner, Nasu Miso, and Mushroom Miso Soup - everything was so good and the fish SUPER FRESH! The only thing I had here was the edamame and the ramen. The edamame was alright but how do you mess up edamame, really? The only problem was the server completely forgetting our order. We waited 30 mins for edamame to come out. Its suppose to be an appetizer. I had to flag the waiter down to ask for an update on the edamame, which coincidentally came out within 2 minutes of asking. So, pretty sure, someone messed up. Now...the ramen? What a complete disaster, it truly tasted like noodles in water with little to no flavor. The inside of the egg was cold in both ramen dishes. My bf had the miso ramen and I had the tonkatsu. Both, a complete disaster. I kept asking for different sauces to try and make it taste like something. Went to Kihon last night for the first time. What initially caught my attention of this place is the fact that they now serve Ramen. I've been wanting a ramen shop in/closer to LB for ages. (I usually go to fountain valley's Shin Sen Gumi to get my fix). But funny enough I wasn't in the mood for ramen so we decided to get sushi. We ordered 4 items and got a little bonus piece thrown in. 1. The yellow tail sashimi with jalapeño and ponzu. I've gotten this dish at a number of places and sadly nothing has compared to Nobu's. But I will say this is a slightly different take on it. The fish was fresh but had a garlic or onion ponzu sauce which added a different flavor profile than I was used to. It was good just not was I expected - 4/5 2. The second dish we ordered was the albacore with garlic and truffle oil. Wow. This was absolutely fantastic. Definitely my favorite dish of the night. Very fresh and such amazing flavor. I definitely recommend this - 4.5/5 3. The next plate to come was the black cod with miso. (I find very similar menu items offered here that they have at Nobu, which is awesome since the price here is wayyyyy more wallet friendly). The cod was perfectly cooked, texture and taste were on point. I might have to take my earlier statement back and give a tie for favorite dish. This was an easy - 4.5/5 4. At about this point in our dinner we had made friends with the sushi chef and he offered us a little something to try. It was seared salmon with crisp, deep-fried spinach on it and garlic chips. It was good - 4/5 5. We were still just a tad bit hungry so we ordered the red snapper sushi. (Comes with 2 pieces for around 5 bucks). It had lemon, sea salt and a little drop of yuzu pepper? Taste was perfect, but texture was a bit off. Not sure if that is just red snapper though. For freshness and flavor, I'd still give it a - 4/5 read more

If you wanna treat yourself with some delicious sushi look no further. Kihon is a great sushi spot with a nice feel to it. The location isn't that big which gives it a more personal feel and if just coming with one or maybe 2 other people I would highly suggest sitting on the bar so you can watch the sushi chef's prepare your food. The fish taste clean and fresh and the presentation beautiful. The best part of the meal was the bluefin tuna tasting (my fav was the akami), smoked octopus carpaccio and fresh oysters. Miso Cod Starter- delicious flavor and soft twnder fish but it just doesn't melt in my mouth. Caterpillar Roll- more avocado than eel. Overall smaller is size than what I'm used to from other places. White Russian Roll- albacore with just a tinge of spiciness and carmelozed onion sauce Tonkotsu Ramen-not as flavorful, but also not too salty as my fav ramen places. Disappointed! Went here tonight for my 30th wedding anniversary and was turned away. Arrived at 5:40 with 3 or 4 tables occupied, most tables empty but with a reserved sign. Guy at door on phone too busy to talk to my wife and I and eventually a waiter asked if he could help us. I asked to be seated for dinner and he said no tables available and it would be 1 hour and a half hours to sit. I asked if reservations were needed or best to get a table and he said yes. I love their sushi. They have some really fun sashimi options, we have tried the Albacore with Crispy Onions and the Salmon with Crispy Spinach. Both of them are addicting. They always have a ton of fresh options on their special board, we try to order at least one off there each time and we have never been disappointed. All of their rolls are good too, I really appreciate that they have true sushi roll options. (I get so tired of places that have fake crab or cream cheese in every roll, so not the case here) The New Naples Roll is one of my favorites!!!
