Kihon takes away was terrible! We've frequented Kihon pre-Covid, so we were excited to give take away a try. We order just over $100.00 of sushi for a small family. When I got the bag from the waiter I was surprised at how light it was! When I got the order home I was shocked to see how under cut the pieces of fish were. No where on the order site does it say how many rolls you get, and 6 vs the more standard 8 is a big difference. It should state what you are getting. Also no where did it say the veggie tempura roll was a hand roll vs a cut roll and trying to share that amongst the family was interesting. As a frequent diner of Sugar Fish, which is a very expensive and high quality sushi restaurant we felt the prices of this place were the same and quantity of what you get for the money was appalling. The sushi we order, and the price that was paid should have easily fest 2 toddlers and two adults, but the sizes we're so small that I had to open a can of tuna and make them sandwiches, as the kids we're still starving, as were we! Totally unacceptable to change your portions for take away orders! Needless to say if you're ordering take away, you've been warned. read more

Make a reservation if you want to eat here! I used to frequent this spot pre covid and never had an issue walking in. Matter of fact, I didn't know they HAD reservations! Anyhow, there is outdoor seating, as well as a few indoor tables. Showed up right at opening at 5pm with a party of 2. I was asked if I had a reservation, when I told the man "no" (assuming he is the manager/owner) he disappeared inside for a good 10 min then came back and said we could sit down but needed to be gone by 6:30. Another man tried to seat us inside, we requested an outdoor table, which led to yet ANOTHER 10 min disappearing act inside. Finally he came back and sat us outside. Long story short, the sushi is still delicious, the wait staff was great, but the two doormen need some public relations training pronto. read more

My mom and I decided we wanted to try a new place for dinner and we absolutely loved this place! I'm a big sashimi fan (specifically salmon) and they have a suggested menu for sushi and sashimi. I noticed that they had New Zealand salmon and I wanted to give it a try and OMG! It was so yum and the quality of the fish was fantastic! We also had yellowtail belly sushi, vegetable tempura, and spicy tuna on crispy rice. Everything was super delicious! The staff was also great and very friendly! I did take a picture of the spicy tuna on crispy rice because they are my favorite appetizer, but I forgot to take a picture of the New Zealand salmon sashimi because I was so excited! This is my third visit here, and sad to say, this time around was not as great as past visits. I think I screwed up by ordering the spicy miso ramen. It was okay, but not great. The broth lacked depth of flavor, there was a big thick slice of under-cooked pork, maybe 6 slices of scallion, the ubiquitous egg, cooked properly, noodles were fine. Just meh. This place's strength is in the sushi, really super fresh, cut skillfully, and with precision. Flavors always on point. Stick with the raw stuff and you'll find that it just may be the best sushi in The LBC. They also carry a Japanese Craft beer IPA called COEDO Kyara, which was one of the best Japanese beers I have ever tasted. read more

The owner or manager has GOT to be one of the most unwelcoming owner/managers I've ever encountered in a restaurant . I showed up at 9 pm on a Saturday night, they close at 9:30. Not only did they not greet us but when we did finally get "greeted" the manager didn't want to take on a new table because he wanted to close and go home He had a dumb expression and was a terrible communicator, I won't return simply due to his terrible customer service. Had dinner here Saturday night for the last night of Dine Out LBC week. There was a 5 course menu for $35 a person. Everything was great and fresh! My 2 faves of the meal were the shiitake and crab tempura and the salmon with roe on top. Amazing! We ordered the "White Russian roll" off their regular menu. It was really good until I found a long hair on the plate. I let our server know and she comped that roll and got us a new one. Even with that little mishap- I'd definitely go back. read more

We started with Asparagus and the Chicken and Vegetable Goya Both of these starters were fresh, well prepared and served hot from the kitchen. On to the Sushi; Yellowtail (2 pieces per order) California Roll, Salmon and Crunchy Roll were very fresh, well prepared and oh so delicious. Nice beer, wine and saki selections. My husband and I order out about 4-5 a week. I have been so disappointed lately and was sharing with some friends. One of them recommended Kihon. I decided to give them a try and I was very pleased with the quality of fish they use. We had the yellowtail with jalapeño and the yellowtail was buttery and delicious. The rolls we ordered used the perfect amount of rice. Many sushi places today use small amounts of fish with heavy amounts of rice. We will definitely be ordering from Kihon again. read more

We live across the street from this restaurant and been here several times and it seems like they don't care about customer service. The last time we were there we ordered takeout and the staff was very rude when we asked for wasabi and ginger. It seems as they're doing us a favor. Two stars for a nice patio ambience and the Cute little young male host at the front. Unbelievably overpriced BLAND bad sushi. The Fish quality was all right and seemed decent but was not the best, the portions were really small. My friend and I spent $100 and left not feeling full or satisfied at all. The roll recipes were whack, even something basic like spicy tuna had very little flavor. We got this one roll with several types of fish and wrapped in cucumber, the roll was 90% cucumber, there wasn't much fish in it, The sauce that came with it was horrifyingly bad. My friend was so grossed out, and it was a small roll with only a few pieces and it cost almost $20. The waiter was bad too he barely even walked by our table or asked us how the food was. If he had come anywhere close to our table after we got our food, we would've told him the role was bad and gotten something else but we were waiting so long and too hungry so we ended up eating it. We are taught us leaving hungry and disappointed. Absolutely do not recommend this place read more

Kihon is my absolute favorite spot for sushi in the long beach area, almost to the point where I want to keep this place a secret. The sushi tastes like it was flew in right from japan - no frills, authentic, fresh. The proportion of sushi rice to fish is ideal and the sushi rice is perfectly seasoned. The sushi chefs slice the fish very thick and pile on the uni. I highly recommend the toro and yellowtail belly - the fatty cuts here are especially sweet. I always get the tonkotsu ramen when I am here. They make the broth + chashu in house. Better than many other ramen shops in california! read more

My husband and I decided to stop in to Kihon for the very first time yesterday and we are SO happy we did! We were immediately greeted by Eddie, who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. He provided the most amazing service and gave us some outstanding recommendations. We were literally blown away by the most incredible and delicious, fresh sushi and sashimi we have EVER experienced in our lives... and that is not an exaggeration. Koji, a Master Sushi Chef, is out of this world. He is truly a culinary artist and created the most delicious, exquisite sushi and sashimi dishes we have ever eaten. Koji is incredible. So friendly and a true master of his craft. I cannot possibly say enough positive things about this restaurant. It is a MUST try. You will be so happy you did! I discovered Kihon a few months ago and have really liked their food BUT, I ordered LeMarca prosecco splits the other night. We had a total of 5 at the table and I almost fell off my chair when I saw the bill. It was $85 just for the splits which is $17 EACH. I understand there's always a mark up but a full bottle is about $12 at the store. It's not listed on the menu so I had no idea what I was going to be charged. This place is incredible. The quality of fish is insane and the staff is so nice and attentive. Kihon is also very clean. You will not find dust on the windowsills or anything like that. This is an authentic sushi resteraunt focusing on the freshness of the fish and outstanding dishes. I HIGHLY recommend the tuna tasting, crispy rice with spicy tuna, and the yellowtail sashimi. My go to sushi resteraunt for the past 5 years has been sushi on fire, this place is WAY better and I will be coming here from now on for my sushi fix. :) read more

This place is really, really special. IMO one of LB best quality restaurants, let alone sushi places. This is not a place to get ramen or rolls, although they do have those and quite tasty. You come here for their nigiri oh man. Almost don't want to tell people bc it's such a gem and should be kept that way. It's higher end sushi grade fish, some you can't find anywhere else I.E.: A5 Japanese Wagyu sushi or halibut fin. My gods. This is the best treat. They forced us (2 adults) to leave after 2 hours and 30 min ish, telling us that because reservations are packed, one can only sit 2 hours. Well, I was never told about this on the phone when I made reservation. And they were telling us while we were having a meal? That is not right. And a guy at the front was rude too.
