This is for the 7th/15th location, which is purely a take-out operation. You can sit and watch the chef prepare your order, but there is no eating area. Fortunately, they're very fast in preparation. You place your order, and then five minutes later, the chef is boxing up your sushi. (fifteen if you order cooked food). Pricing is also not bad for Park Slope. A sushi roll dinner combo has three basic rolls, ,an appetizer, and soup or salad for $16.50. We spent $38 total for a roll dinner combo, four pieces of sashimi, a chicken teriyaki dinner, and an extra miso soup. It was just the right amount of food for two adults and one three year old. Basic rolls are pretty solid, with a fair amount of fish and avocado. Sashimi was fresh, and didn't have that watery consistency that some defrosted fish gets. Miso soup had enoki mushrooms as well as the usual seaweed and tofu, which gave it a bit of extra umami. Everything was beautifully presented and put together. I can't speak to the fancy rolls though, which seem to be a big part of the menu. I like my Americanized sushi a lot, but I draw the line at filling it with deep-fried items. There are several lunch combos on the menu that offer decent value, and I'm looking forward to trying them. It's a fast take-out sushi place that is right by our house in the Slope. This particular Kiku location is a no-frills, pretty good choice for affordable and delicious sushi. The limited seating (3 seats) makes this place most ideal for take-out. My wife and I moved in right around the corner and were looking for a go-to sushi restaurant (we're once-a-week-eaters at least) so we had high hopes for Kiku. A head's up, we're not really into rolls, we just want quality sushi and sashimi so maybe the other reviews pertain to that. But, for quality of fish it was maybe some of the worst I've had. Bad enough that we essentially stopped our meal and left to grab a shot of whiskey at local Brookvyn to try and stave off any food poisoning potentially brewing. An aside, Brookvyn, i'll be back to try what looked to be a good meal and I don't know if it's urban legend that hard liquor can negate bad sushi, but I would have gargled jack daniels if I thought it would have prevented what I was sure was a night in the bathroom. I like my sushi of the oily variety (saba, hamachi) and for my wife the ultimate test of a quality of a sushi restaurant is their uni. My saba: dried to the point of having a dried chicken consistency. Flesh you had to tear away with your teeth and an overwhelming dose of vinegar (the formaldehyde of sushi). It was basically the same kind of quality as the sushi that you have at a carousel-style sushi restaurant, and you've just picked up the piece that has circled around endlessly all night, full of shame and sorrow. Yeah, sushi chef, I see you changing the order of the plates so that I may not recognize the pattern of the death's row of sushi. I have eaten my share of garbage sushi, and I just got served two pieces at Kiku. I think the horror of having to make pepto bismol runs to the deli all night because of what I ate may have freaked my wife out a little bit because she just smelled the Uni (of which she may as well be a sommelier of) and refused to eat it. It just smelled bad. We did complain, more on that later; let me describe the two pieces of spicy tuna roll we had. I know the deal with the tuna roll, it's the hotdog of tuna. yes it may have the small pieces of tuna cut away from an actual sushi piece, but it's also other stuff of tuna. I don't care, with the spiciness I like it. The better the restaurant the more actual tuna you would eat as a sushi you're going to get. This was the first time I suspected that not only was this majority "other", it was mixed with "other" from other types of fish, possibly colored to look like tuna. By this time, we've had enough so we complain. Personally, i could care less about the manners of the waitstaff as long as the food as good, unless I'm paying for that level of service as part of the experience. They aren't exactly happy about this since other tables are close enough that other patrons could hear our complaints (and we're not trying to be loud and obnoxious). The waitress disagrees and even brings over the uni to show us how fresh it is. I didn't try it so again, i can't say. You know how they say to be a master at something you have to do it 10,000 times? Well, my wife is a master of uni. At no point did the waitress try to defend the fish (not sushi) that I had. Any sushi restaurant can have a bad night and I've had a wide range of quality of sushi and am also fairly forgiving. But the standard of quality displayed by what they would allow to be served is too telling. Never again. read more

I started working in a new place in Gowanus on Mondays and Thursdays, so it was time to find a new lunch place. I came across Kiku Sushi's flyer, and ordered the lunch special -- three rolls and soup or salad for $10. Okay, the sushi is good enough for the price that I'll order again, but it doesn't knock me off my feet. Problem is, I've been ordering delivery from them almost every Monday and Thursday for 4 months, like clockwork, always to the same woman on the phone, they know my address, they know my order, and yet... They are total assholes. The woman knows who I am... But if I call for the lunch special at 3:50 and it ends at 4, no lunch special. And when I say, "but, it's 3:50, not 4"... She hangs up on me. When I try to order with a credit card but haven't met their minimum... "try to remember we have minimum, *okay*?" Sorry, sassy-mc-sass-alot. I haven't ordered with a credit card before. The guy that delivers also sees me every Monday and Friday and always acts like a jerk too. Well Kiku Sushi, you just lost a regular. Looks like I gotta find a new place to frequent. Lots of delivery to my neighborhood (windsor terrace) seems to take goddamn forever, but Kiku is always at my door ten minutes (or less) after I've hung up the phone. Ridiculous, and totally awesome. I'm always getting take-out from Kiku Sushi and have been impressed with the freshness of their food. It's a bit pricier than other sushi spots in the neighborhood, but well worth it. The rolls are plump and full of that raw stuff that other places sometimes skimp on. The small free fresh fruit cup with each order is a bonus. The staff is very friendly as well. Had this place for dinner last night, got some old standbys and gyoza. It was good, nothing earth shattering, but good. It's comparable to Suki Sushi for me, although I've heard this is better - I'll have to order different rolls to see. The fish was fresh, the gyoza tasty, and I really liked that they gave me a peach as dessert. They don't deliver to my place, but since I'll be up in this area more often, I'll definitely order from here again. read more

I've been looking for a new sushi place that we can always turn to, I am happy to say that I have now found it. Kiku Sushi is simply awesome. Thanks to my buddy Dan L who's review convinced us to go here! 1) Flavor/Taste: A couple of weeks ago we ordered from Blue Ribbon. It was good but very underwhelming. I much preferred my meal from Kiku. While I love good clean fish I must admit that my biggest passion with sushi is the "iron chef" influence of creative maki rolls or Americanized sushi. Kiku had a dazzling area of unique speciality rolls and they are adding and changing things up all the time. I even constructed my own speciality roll on a whim (spicy king crab, skitake and avocado) that they put together without blinking (it was awesome by the way). Even though they are creative and adventurous with their menu they still deliver great plain sushi or sashimi. We had walked over to the spot to check it out and pick up the menu and the guy rolling the food was as authentic as they come (and very busy by the looks of things). I had one "bad" roll but again every ones milage is going to vary and while I had one that I didn't really enjoy the rest were stellar. Again this is all about personal tastes too. The one I didn't care for was the 7th Avenue roll. It was new (looked beautiful). It was jalpapeno, red pepper, spicy tuna and a few other odds and ends. It tasted like a vegetarian roll, so without the tuna it might be THE thing to order for vegetarians that like spicy food! The ingredients weren't bad, I just didn't care for it. Either way I CAN'T WAIT to order again and try more and more of their amazing and exciting menu. 2) PRICE/VALUE!-Normally we get sushi as a treat. As a rule, particularly the first time I order I try not to look at the price and just order whatever I think will be most delicious. Again when we ordered from Blue Ribbon the bill was THREE times what it was from here. Kiku is an awesome value and the food was fresh, delicious and visually stunning. 3) Staff/Service-We live in Greenwood Heights and while there are some great spots locally and some that deliver over here, it is still really developing. We had been convinced there were no great Sushi places that deliver and had been going pretty far to pick up sushi. Well we were wrong! We were being driven through Park Slope when my Bentley had some minor issues. While waiting for its examination at a nearby shop, my precious children and I decided to savor some hopefully exquisite sushi at a neighborhood establishment. Our driver waited at the repair shop. When we entered "Kiku" (which means flower in Japanese), I was a little baffled to see large burlap sacks in the vestibule. Were these sacks filled with rice, I wondered? Hopefully not to be served in the sushi of which we were about to partake. The music was ghastly - some kind of popular Chinese music with a nasal vocal style and tasteless arrangements. But the decor, if a bit less elegant than the children and I are accustomed to, was clearly acceptable. Our waitress didn't have a particularly firm grasp of the King's English, but she did her best. Although, I must say, not owing necessarily to a language barrier, we had a grievous misunderstanding quite early on. Being constantly careful about my girth, I asked for the house salad with dressing "on the side." Sure enough she brought dressing on the side, but the salad was quite thoroughly doused with the very same dressing! It ruined my mood. The children were oblivious to my dilemma, which further irritated me. Williamsburg was playing with his chopsticks, dipping them into the soy sauce and then sucking on them, to my grave consternation. I threatened to reduce his allowance (which is quite sizable), if he didn't behave better. My little angel, Bethenella, was quietly reading Macbeth, ignoring everything around her, as usual. After lunch, when we went to pick up the Bentley, it turned out that there was nothing wrong with it. My driver had inadvertently pressed the overdrive button on the shift lever. Went here the other night, the sushi was great (esp. for the price.) I had some kind of specialty roll with red and white tuna on top, can't remember what it was but it's definitely worth checking out. Reading the other reviews, I was confused about whether to expect seating or not. The location I went to had a nice seating area. According to their takeout menu, they have multiple locations on 7th Ave in Park Slope. The one at 361 7th Ave. is a sit-down place...I haven't been to the one at 453 7th Ave., but it sounds like that's the take-out place with limited seating. Hopefully that clears up some of the contradictory-sounding reviews. read more

There are two Kiku locations on 7th in park slope, this review is of the take out location in south slope. It's my favorite place to get sushi--the quality is excellent: fresh, flavorful and great portions. The rolls have far more fish than anywhere else I've ever been. To me, Kiku is odd. Some of their rolls are fine, but others are pretty much crap. After each of a recent few visits I've left more and more underwhelmed every time. What takes them from a 3 to a 2 is that they seem to be trying to slyly cheat us diners. The "spicy" rolls (usually some of my faves) are a big hellz-to-the-naw here. As Ted K. so appropriately describes, they're very obviously packed with fillers. Like a hot dog, but much less tasty. They're so diluted that you cannot even tell what type of fish you're eating. To add insult to injury, they're not even at all spicy! Just rolls of vaguely fishy mush. read more

Like the 5th Ave location, the sushi is perfect - innovative, fresh, and delicious. But don't get the boring stuff! Stick to the special rolls like the Coconut Lobster or Hawaii roll and appetizers like tuna pizza or tuna dumplings. I've introduced friends and family to Kiku and whoever tries it becomes a regular. 'Nuff said. My few quibbles are that it's always freezing inside, they play pop music for some reason and have these completely out of place country style napkins in an otherwise very designy, modern setting. read more

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars for this place. Our usual place is 5th Ave Vegetarian Delight/Osaka Sushi (yes, one of those places with a name crisis), but lately I've been needing a change. Kiku has nice quality fish and well put together rolls, fancier than our usual place. The prices are in a reasonable range for your basic rolls and the specialty rolls are particularly tasty though most are on the higher price end- I really enjoyed the Kiku Spicy Tuna roll, although it just seems like a larger, more expensive version of a basic spicy tuna crunch roll. While I recognize they've got a bit more skill than Osaka, I'm just not impressed. You have to spend at least $10 to get free delivery and they charge you for sides of any sauces, which sort of takes out the part where you're saving money on the lunch special. I ordered today and am really disappointed in the lunch I got for $12 plus tip. The salmon skin roll doesn't come with eel sauce and has a strong fishy flavor, instead of that smokey flavor you really want with salmon skin. The spicy tuna is okay, but the spicy mayo is lacking in flavor (its usually our favorite side item, but last time we got it we just tossed it out). It seems to come as a spicy tuna "crunch" by default, at least I've had tempura flakes in mine each time. The shrimp tempura roll was good and a really nice size for lunch special, though again I wasn't blown away. The delivery people thus far have been gruff and disinterested, I have no urge to tip them overly generously like I do with the sweet guys at Osaka sushi. I'll keep Kiku in the rotation to keep me from a case of sushi monotony, but it won't be replacing Osaka as my #1 delivery place. read more

What a great find! The $10 lunch special will leave you stuffed! Wasn't the biggest fan of the miso soup, but the sushi rolls (especially for the price) were awesome. Be warned, this isn't a restaurant. This is more of a take it to go place. We took it to-go and sat on someone's stoop to enjoy some sun and sushi. Fantastic sushi and worth every penny. It's a takeout joint so you won't get to sit down to savor the immaculately composed rolls, sashimi, and specialty items. But when you get home and take out your items from the carefully packed brown paper bag, the quality of each piece will force you to stop whatever else you are doing and focus on the deliciousness. The staff is helpful, friendly, and extremely fast. Watching the sushi chef put together your order with his expeditious ways is one of the pleasures of visiting Kiku. read more
