Sushi: good, fast, and affordable. Another place that is smart and has your phone number & address in the system. Let's be honest, it sounds like a small thing to be excited about but it removes the pain of having to repeat your address over and over again every time you order. Very nice when you're dealing with restaurants that may not speak English as their first language. Aaaaaaaaaanyway, Kiku is not the world's best sushi but it IS tasty and delivered super-fast (sometimes under 10 minutes!). It's not super-cheap like places at which you'd get two pieces of sushi for $3, here it's one piece for $2.75 or so. The average roll is around $4 and special rolls are in the $10 each range. I'm a big fan of Kiku Sushi - I've ordered from them over 50 times. The sushi is very fresh and they deliver quickly. I almost always order the salmon/avocado roll because it's delicious, and I also like their vegetarian rolls a lot. I used to eat more sushi, but my concerns over mercury in tuna and PCB's in farm-raised salmon have made me cut down my weekly habit to once or twice a month. USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN EATING HERE. On Grub Hub, it says 'Hot and Sour soup.' When the soup arrived it was actually Miso soup with hot sauce in it. To make matters WAY worse, IT HAD A SHRIMP IN IT. I have NEVER seen Hot and Sour Soup with shrimp in it, so if you are going to throw random food into menu items you need to warn people. Thank God we had my husbands EPI pen and plenty of Benedryl on us! Seriously, this is a good way to actually kill people. Kiku rocks! The best sushi I've had in NYC, and their lunch and dinner specials are amazing. Plus, they have really great creative rolls for vegetarians and vegans, and they give you a hot towel for your hands when you eat in. I like this place A LOT. I haven't tried any other sushi restaurants in the area, but I have zero desire to since Kiku satiates my cravings. Their menu is full with tons of staples and special roles. Their prices are fantastic. The fish/veg to rice ratio is awesome. I hate it when a sushi place covers up their bad flavors with 15 layers of rice. First time I visited Kiku & I was impressed by their incredibly fast service. I ordered during what seemed to be a busy time of the evening: delivery guys running in and out, phone ringing off the hook. no one was lined up outside, but granted, it was raining. There were 3 sushi chefs (that i could see) and they were all working at lightening speed. Within minutes I had my Ocean Roll (white tuna, avocado and spicy scallop.) There's limited seating, (probably enough for 2 or 3 people) so I brought my food home. Though, there is free delivery and they do take cards! I also noticed that they do sell some of my favorite plum wine in addition to sake and the staple Kirin. On top of the sushi being incredibly fresh, the wasabi was incredibly potent. the ginger looked just as fresh (all pink and moist!) but i'm not a ginger fan, so i left that alone. read more

One of the reasons I love this place is because I love the woman who runs it. I've always found her really friendly, down to earth, and charming. I am not judging it by authenticity - it's just a takeout sushi place, not a Museum of Sushi. But it's very tasty, very fresh, and there are some extremely affordable options here. I recommend the Inari-Tamago-Avocado roll, for a cheap vegetarian munch. Among the specials, one of our favorites is the Valentine Roll, with white tuna and mango. I go by in person as a rule to pick up, so I see them making my order. It's a meticulous, well-run place. BTW we loved the Mr. Inari roll when they first introduced it, but they changed the formula and it's not as good now. Just a little feedback for the shop. Oh, also, this review is (obviously) for the takeout branch between 15th & 16th. I've never actually eaten here but I always get delivery. They are usually pretty prompt. I don't remember doing the second call, you know the "Hey, where's our food??" call. I eat more sushi tha I probably should-as others have said due to mercury concerns. I really like kiku-the spict roll combo-Salmon, shrimp, tuna and eel avocado. They also have several dragonn rolls and specials that are worth looking into. I have never really had the kitchen entrees; my friend ordered yakisoba and said it was good. I get take out from here more than I eat in-i feel a little guilty because they use SO much packaging and for some strange reason they seem to think my name is easly when I call with my number for delivery. The lunch special is one of the best in the neighborhood. Clean, a little bit hip without being nauseously so. I am gad to report that the goldfish forced to swim in a too shallow bowl/plate have been replaced with rocks-that was just wrong. When you come across a unique, delicious bowl of hot and sour soup, that's something special. The hot and sour soup at Kiku is made with a miso broth. It contains whole shrimp and tofu, and cilantro leaves. It has a really warm heat to it. I find it pretty shocking that this place gets any bad reviews at all. Maybe people are meaning to write bad reviews of other branches of Kiku? This particular branch on 7th Avenue in the Slope near 16th Street never fails to deliver amazing food. They are super fast, they are always amazingly friendly (hard to believe the comments about rudeness), and every time we sit down to eat, one of us inevitably says, "Wow...mine is really good tonight, how about yours?" It's basically really good every single time without fail. The presentation, by the way, is also always gorgeous, even in the take-out containers. Really...don't believe the bad reviews here. I crave their spicy crunchy crab rolls, and for $4.50 a pop, I don't feel guilty indulging. Everything is made to order and I've never had anything that wasn't fresh. There's a small waiting area so that after you order you can watch the chef prepare your food before your very eyes, so you know it's fresh. The sushi and sashimi are delicious, especially the salmon that simply melts in my mouth. I haven't really tried their creative "fusion" rolls, especially since avocado is one of my least favorite fruits... I'm just sticking to the basics and enjoying every it every single time. This is for the 7th/15th location, which is purely a take-out operation. You can sit and watch the chef prepare your order, but there is no eating area. Fortunately, they're very fast in preparation. You place your order, and then five minutes later, the chef is boxing up your sushi. (fifteen if you order cooked food). Pricing is also not bad for Park Slope. A sushi roll dinner combo has three basic rolls, ,an appetizer, and soup or salad for $16.50. We spent $38 total for a roll dinner combo, four pieces of sashimi, a chicken teriyaki dinner, and an extra miso soup. It was just the right amount of food for two adults and one three year old. Basic rolls are pretty solid, with a fair amount of fish and avocado. Sashimi was fresh, and didn't have that watery consistency that some defrosted fish gets. Miso soup had enoki mushrooms as well as the usual seaweed and tofu, which gave it a bit of extra umami. Everything was beautifully presented and put together. I can't speak to the fancy rolls though, which seem to be a big part of the menu. I like my Americanized sushi a lot, but I draw the line at filling it with deep-fried items. There are several lunch combos on the menu that offer decent value, and I'm looking forward to trying them. It's a fast take-out sushi place that is right by our house in the Slope.
