I used to get takeout at Kiku Sushi in Monrovia all the time with my family. Unfortunately, on my last visit things had clearly changed -- I believe there was a new owner because the quality dropped dramatically. The first thing I noticed was the wasabi had zero spice -- I put the whole glob in and felt nothing. My go-to beef teriyaki, which I've ordered for years, was so chewy it was inedible. The cucumber salad had no vinegar at all, and the miso soup tasted synthetic. I paid $17.99 for a meal I could barely eat. My whole family agreed the experience has gone downhill. This didn't look like much from the outside, but definitely one of my favorite Japanese places I've been so far. My friend and I came a bit later than dinner time and the place was pretty empty except an older couple there. Staff was really quick in serving us and attentive as a result. :) The menu was soo big and had so many different options I loved it. Both my friend and I ended up getting the dinner platter, where we could choose our appetizers and entrees. Everything was amazing and so so filling. My friend and I went for the gathering and we ordered kiku roll, honey roll, sukiaki, and calamari. The calamari is not that chewy but it skin is not bad. We like the kiku roll and honey honey roll. Kiku Sushi is one of those neighborhood sushi restaurants that have just lasted through the years. The pandemic wasn't kind to many restaurants, and it was definitely wasn't kind to Asian American businesses. So seeing them make it was amazing. During the pandemic, they remained open to take out orders, and we took full advantage. One of my fave go-to items is the dragon roll. My kids grew up coming to Kiku and just ordering that all the time. So whenever I order a dragon roll, memories rush in, and my tummy gets full. Another cold weather fave of the family is the vegetable tempura udon. If you like noodle soups, the udon soup is a must! I like it with just the vegetable tempura and take that with a side of oyster shooters, if it's available. Of course there's also the usual sushi nigiri that's always topping my list. Great sushi at an affordable price. Kiku is currently open for both indoor dining and takeout with staff following proper Covid precautions (masks + gloves). Parking is easy to find as it is located in a shopping center. Service is ok but pretty typical of an Asian restaurant in that they won't talk to you if you don't talk to them. My family's favorite item from Kiku is the sushi boat B. It is about $110 and can comfortably feed 4-5 adults with possible leftovers. It comes with 3 rolls, 1 sashimi salad, 1 teriyaki chicken, 1 plate of tempura, and assorted pieces of sushi and sashimi. Also, a yelp check in can give a free 4 piece CA roll. They offer a good variety of dishes from noodles to sushi and various appetizers. Currently with yelp checkin you get 4 pieces CA roll for free. I ordered their lunch deluxe special which comes with your choice of 2 rolls, salad, soup and rice (per the menu but I didn't get rice but I'm OK....plenty of rice in the rolls to fill me up). There are tons of sushi restaurants in Monrovia, and Kiku is a lovely little spot. Small interior and simple and fresh rolls. I had phone ordered a Monrovia roll which is just a spicy tuna& shrimp roll topped with fresh slices of avocado and salmon. Super tasty combination, but a tad more expensive than other spots in the area. The total after tax was roughly $19 for that one roll. This Japanese spot has good fresh fish, however, anything that was fried wasn't freshly fried and gave off a stale taste. It made the rolls almost inedible. Make sure to order fresh fish only. The nigiri were excellent, fresh & big cuts. House salad - the ginger dressing is good but note it is VERY GINGERY lol I'm sad this spot didn't live up to expectations. Although I wouldn't say it's the best Japanese food out there, for Monrovia it's one of the best and I really like everything I've had there. Yelp 100 Challenge 2019 - # 58/100 Mom sent us on an errand to her favorite Japanese food joint. It was noon and I haven't had breakfast yet so I was starving. I ordered the 3-item combo. I chose salmon teriyaki, shrimp and vegetable tempura with salmon roll, that came with rice, salad, miso soup and ice cream. I drank my miso soup like a native, straight out of the bowl. The green salad had a nice carrot-ginger-miso dressing. The salmon was almost overcooked, the teriyaki flavor wasn't overpowering. I loved the light batter on the shrimp and vegetable tempura. The salmon roll was ok, I'm pretty sure it would taste great with avocado but I had to get them without due to allergies. Service was fast but friendly. Kiku Sushi is located in a plaza by the 210 freeway that, to be honest, I forget about because I'm always headed elsewhere. My family came here to celebrate my dad's birthday and we all liked it a lot and will definitely come back. Our server, Eunice, was great. My mom is indecisive and asks lots of questions, but Eunice was patient. The four pieces of California roll with Yelp check-in were fine, but the daily special salmon collar ($4.99) was the real star. I still think about it from time to time. This was my first time trying salmon collar and it was so soft and buttery/flaky that it didn't even feel like I was eating fish. Eating around the bone is a bit of a task, but I would come back here just for the salmon collar alone. They also have ramen for $9.99, which is fine, but not any standout. I also tried some of the croquette and tonkatsu as part of the Kiku combination meal set and both were perfect. Crispy, crispy croquette...delicious. The scoop of green tea ice cream at the end of our meal was very nice. Pretty much been my favorite sushi spot. Well I should specify it's my favorite sushi spot around my local area to get a combo bento box meal. I'm not the biggest raw seafood fan afterall. Item's ordered: My usual order is the two item combo & I usually pick teriyaki chicken with shrimp & veggie tempura. The gf usually gets the 3 item combo which consists of salmon roll, crunch roll & sashimi (6 pcs). The combos also come with misi soup & salad. just like most other similar restaurants. Taste: The teriyaki chicken has never been a let down here. Chicken is cooked well & not dry which is just one of the biggest downfalls about chicken. Also the sauce has good for flavor & is not overwhelmingly sweet. The portion they give is pretty nicely sized as well. So much so that I sometimes feel I need more rice. The tempura has always been nicely fried & has the usual veggies. My favorite aside from the shrimp is the sweet potato. The rolls are going & the sashimi was as well. My gf says the quality & freshness of the fish is definitely not bad here but not the best ever. The miso soup is pretty much the usual miso you get at other sushi places & the same can be said about the salad which comes with what taste like an orange ginger flavored dressing. that works for me. The combos also come with a little side of pickled cucumbers that has a nice fresh subtle flavor. Just a slightly sweet, salty, & vinegary. I forgot if it's just for dinner but they also give a little edamame. Just plain simple edamame, but hey that works for me. Few notes: I've had the spicy fried chicken as well & I've found it's usually drier & I didn't really care for the sauce. I find the teriyaki chicken much better. I really do think for non (raw) sushi fans this place is one of the best because of the all different cooked options you get to choose from. I don't think I've been to any other places with as many options. Service & parking: Service has always been adequate & attentive. Not the best I've ever experienced, but definitely nothing bad at all. Very common for Asian service. Parking is very easy since there is a larger parking lot providing spaces for many other businesses nearby. I will definitely will return back here. If opening at 11:30, it is difficult to see that an order will take 1.25 hours to complete when it was placed right away at opening time. I am willing to be patient anyway. My coworker placed a separate smaller online order at 12:01pm with Eta given for 12:48. At 12:19 pm she received an update that her order eta was adjusted to 1:14pm. When she called at 12:43pm to confirm she was told the online system was not working and they did not ever receive her order. She decided to cancel as she was unable to wait for potentially an additional 1.25 hours for a new order placed for udon and spicy tuna on crispy rice. Maybe the Yelp online system has the issue. Idk. Disappointing. I picked up my food around 12:45, it was ready. I inquired about my coworker's order and was told she cancelled. Speaker turned away a bit abruptly so I said thank you and left. I understand it is awkward. It is good to communicate gracefully. Packaging: well packaged. One note - They taped the knotted plastic which made it difficult to open or reuse the bag. Food: good portion, good flavor, beautiful presentation. I requested no rice due to diabetes and they accommodated with a roll above my expectation. I read some other negative reviews and always check the author's other reviews to see if they have a good rating range vs only one star to everyone. Main issues - The online order system definitely needs work. - Takes quite some time - If 1.25 hours are needed for an order right from the opening time, keep that in mind. Follow up on your order and call right away if possible . - Could be some improvement in communication technique, I want to give you my hard earned money! Food Well done, enjoyed and would be willing to try again and hope for better process/expediting of order. I appreciate they took time to help with my request. Samurai roll- cucumber wrap does not come with rice or nori, great option Honeymoon roll- requested no rice and fairly expected some pile of food as rice is the binder, but received a beautiful shaped actual roll cut into pieces. The sushi is amazing! The prices are great. The service can improve. The servers take your drink order and food order and that's it. Good luck on getting a drink refill or having a server ask if your food is good. You have to wave someone down. My husband and I have been eating here for years and I just now decided to review. The sushi is so delicous I recommend the Thor roll. I love their crunchy roll.
