We came today for Father's Day. My baby sister wanted a chow fun. We were already all halfway done eating and her chow fun still didn't come so we asked the server for an update. She immediately yelled at us that they're super busy today and implying that we were being rude to her for asking. 10 minutes go by, we ask another server. She also gets upset but doesn't yell. We later just asked for it to just be taken off the bill since we were already done eating and the chow fun still hadn't come. That's when the owner/manager came in and started sweet talking us. She was apologizing and even touched my baby sister's face. We still said we didn't want it anymore. They brought it out and kept apologizing. Update on my vegetarian review. I am a pan fried rice cake w/soy sauce loyalist, but there is another item (NOT on the menu) that I also really like. It's a pan fried chive pocket. The only filling is chives, no egg or lil shrimps or glass noodles that is commonly found in other chive pockets/dumplings. Each order comes with 3 pieces roughly the size of my palm. When the total came out, it was about $8 higher than expected, but the receipt had no itemized prices listed. When we checked the menu and added up our dishes, the math didn't match what we were charged. When we asked for clarification, the owner read off the prices she charged us--and every single dish was priced higher than what was listed on the menu. I knew exactly who Danny was talking about--a small restaurant in the Mon-Arc Center in Monrovia, CA. What Danny didn't know is that I also know the couple. Danny mentioned that restaurant to show me how hardworking typical Chinese people are. I told him I knew of two restaurants that only serve breakfast and lunch, closing before dinner. Both are great: Fortune No. 1 on Valley Boulevard in Monterey Park and Kim Ky in San Gabriel. In my opinion, Kim Ky is top-notch in terms of flavor. The funny thing is that I've only visited this restaurant twice in the past eight years, mainly because they close at 5 p.m. It's quite unusual for a restaurant to skip serving dinner. As I was preparing the photos for this review, I was surprised to realize that I ordered the same dishes on both of my visits. They were simple, straightforward dishes, but they were outstanding. Kim Ky is a Vietnamese-style Chinese restaurant--or at least they speak Chinese. Their menu primarily features noodles, both rice noodles and wheat noodles, with seven types to choose from. I prefer wheat noodles over rice noodles--thinner is better, at least for me. The restaurant has several light boxes in front of the window displaying the current jackpots for several big lotteries. Strangely, though, I've never seen them sell lottery tickets inside. Now, let's talk about the food: Beef Satay Sauce Noodles - $12.75 The presentation was a full bowl of ground meat in a red sauce, looking almost like a light paste, as if it were full of red chilis. But don't be fooled by the appearance or color--it's not spicy at all, and there's no chili pepper in it. The flavor of the satay was incredibly authentic, just like the kind I had in Chaozhou. The beef was tender and juicy, and the thin yellow noodles were perfectly cooked--not too hard, not too soft. This isn't a noodle soup; it's mixed noodles with sauce, so skip it if you prefer soup-based noodles. Rating: 8/10 Assorted Beef Variety or Assorted Pork Variety Both are good, but I recommend the pork version over the beef. The reason is simple: you get more variety with pork because it's easier to source the ingredients. The pork version includes intestine, heart, kidney, liver, and more. With the beef version, you mainly get tripe--and only white honeycomb tripe, which doesn't taste as good as the black tripe. Beef: 7/10, Pork: 8/10 Fried Chinese Doughnuts These are Chinese doughnuts, but different from the local Shanghainese style. The Shanghai version is lighter and crispier, but these are still very good. Rating: 8/10 Assorted Meat & Shrimp If you can't decide what to order, go with No. 1 on the menu. Honestly, a combination of both of them makes the perfect balance. I did enjoy the stew one a bit more, but I just love braised beef, which were also very tender and juicy. Plus, they were out of pork kidney, so we were missing that element in the first bowl too. The waiters were a bit rude and quick to dismiss us, but that's also typical service at any Asian spot. Already full house and had to wait for a table (I didn't want to share a larger table with strangers). got seated at the corner of the room after someone left and dishes were cleared, but the table was still dirty and wet with sauce dripping. Had to wave a waitress down to wipe it clean and bring me a menu. once I'm ready to order I cannot see any server walking in my corner to check. I had to wave down the guy, who told someone else that I need to place an order. waited another couple minutes when the guy gave up waiting and came over to take my order. as other reviewer stated, my order took a while since I didn't order their noodle soup. I've notice another table got their food first even though they placed their order after me. I wanted the house-special rice noodle, as I'd remembered years ago I loved the same dish at Chinatown's Kim Ta. I also ordered a mixed fried balls. the rice noodle had generous shrimp, beef and chicken pieces with chinese broccoli. the noodle has the same fried (almost burnt) flavor, but the dish was missing squid and fishcakes and fried eggs, as I'd remembered (maybe I should have ordered seafood rice noodle but the photo on the menu didn't show what I wanted neither). the fried fish and shrimp balls were good with the sweet dipping sauce. the place was busy full house for the entire hour I was there. most people ordered noodle soups, which is probably what they are famous for but I didn't feel like it today. parking lot is also full with cars. read more
