This spot is a family favorite, particularly for the chicken/pork soup (the one with a spicy milky white broth that comes with refills), and this one clay pot rice with a hard-to-find seafood (I wanna say it's a type of fish? I'm probably wrong though) (Sorry, I don't know the English names of these dishes! Goes to show how difficult it is to find even in such a densely Chinese area like the 626!). Even before the change up, service has always been pretty good. Apparently the new chef is from the same hometown as my family, which is part of the reason why they keep coming back; they claim they can't find the same flavors and ingredients elsewhere. Personally, probably because I grew up here and not in China, I don't necessarily share the same sentiment as my family. I don't care much for that stone pot rice, however, I do enjoy the soup! It's packed with collagen and super warming from the peppercorns and ginger. Their other dishes, including the classic salt and pepper shrimp and garlic pea shoots, are all pretty solid. This dish is best eaten at the restaurant and not as take out. The fish was fried to golden brown. Nice and crispy served with light soy sauce. Delicious. (2). Seafood Hot Pot with XO sauce (5/5). This dish has a good variety of seafood. Seasoned well. Also delicious. (3) Eggplant with spicy sauce (4/5). Eggplant was cooked perfectly. I would prefer a bit more sauce. But it was still very good. Steamed rice and complementary soup is served with the meal. The restaurant is not very big. Tables are placed very close to each other. It feels a bit cramped dining in. Service is super friendly and they gave my brother an extra dish because he's a regular and it was his birthday. BBQ pork fried rice which is delicious. Very flavorful, slightly oily but in a good way. Filet mignon with black pepper sauce - also delicious. The hot new place all the older people are talking about. All of our parents keep talking about the great lunch special. We didn't end up making it for lunch special but we came for our Chinese new year dinner on the weekend before CNY. Big mistake. We came early but it still got crowded and on top of that people were rude and service was awful. I mean I've been to tons of Chinese restaurants growing up and service isn't always the best but they usually get the job done, food is good and so you don't mind that there are no pleasantries. No, not here. Food wasn't great and at times there wasn't any at all. We were missing two dishes even when we finished the rest of our meal and they kept saying it was coming and wouldn't even apologize for the delay or offer to cancel it. I mean we literally finished all our other dishes and had to go boxes and they still had us sitting there waiting for two other dishes we ordered forever ago. The waitress and honestly all the staff were beyond rude which is even worse for a CNY dinner. I get you're busy but even still, all the unhappiness was unnecessary. Just stop taking customers and close early if you can't keep up and you're gonna have a bad attitude about it. The chicken clay pot rice had small bones in the small pieces of chicken, if you can even call it chicken. It was more like chicken bones with tiny slivers of meat. One of our go-to places for great lunch specials. They also have dinner specials too. The dishes suit the Cantonese palate, and the taste is spot on. The dishes are reasonable prices, super delicious and comfort food. There is a HUGE selection for the lunch and dinner menu. This restaurant is in a mall, so parking is limited. There are some spaces behind the restaurant and street parking. Recently the restaurant changed ownership to Boiling Stone Fish and the owner did some remodeling. Though the fish did not taste fresh, they added a generous amount of it. The soup base was delicious and not salty at all. As for the green beans, it was super salty. It was so salty to the point where I couldn't eat it alone and even with rice without chug a great amount of water. Other than that, it wasn't overcooked and green beans itself was fresh. Service is fast. Parking was simple since there was additional parking in the back. Restaurant can be suited for a large party since they have large tables available. It was greasy, random vegetable chunks/cuts and too much alcohol. I am not sure how this is their famous dish. We ordered a 2lb fish for 5 people but there was barely any meat for each person. The menu said that it was 17.99$/lb but the total came out totally different. The stir fried string bean with fish fillet lunch special dish was 9.99$. It was greasy, they used frozen fish and the beans were fried in oil leaving this weird skin texture on the outside. It was lacking a lot of flavors. The seafood and tofu in claypot was 17.99$ but a total rip off. There were about 6 pieces of small tofu cubes, 4-5 frozen fish fillets (same as the string beans stirfry), 3 shrimps, 5-6 cuttlefish/squid. It was loaded with cabbage at the bottom. The dish mainly tasted of oil and toubanjiang sauce. The beef chow-mien was super greasy, uneven coating of soy sauce and flavor. The beef slices were tenderized to the point that it's not really beef anymore? You can't really taste any beef. There is also no wok hei, a big disappointment. Short while ago, I came across this restaurant on Yelp. The reviews mentioned great food and daily lunch specials, plus something that's unheard of these days, a ling list of specials for only $10. So on a day when we had nothing planned for lunch, we came here to try them out. The parking lot is shared with other businesses. The closest spots are tight and need a little maneuvering skills to get in. The outside and interior is not fancy at all. Just your average Chinese restaurant. The service is similar to a design style I like: minimalist. It's almost like they made an effort to exchange as little words as possible and avoid any facial expressions. For lunch, we went with their specials menu: Filet mignon in black pepper sauce: nice color in the beef but we all know it's not filet mignon. The beef was lacking compared to the onions they filled the plate with. Some pieces were tender, some were chewy. 3/5.(see my photo) Chicken fried rice: decent wok flavor and generous with the chicken. We opted out of scallions or any of the frozen diced veggies. 3.5/5 String beans and chicken: An even amount of chicken vs. beans. Flavor isn't bad. 3.5/5 Seafood tofu hot pot. Decent amount of fish and shrimp with tofu. Good flavor. 4/5. They served complimentary soup, but my soup spoon tasted like dishwater, as if they just fished it out of the sink. One sip was enough for me to thoroughly inspect every bowl plate or cup. Whenever we ask for anything, like water or the rice that was supposed to come with the lunch specials, we had to ask twice. They accept credit cards, but charge .75 extra. And then they tell me they cannot put the tip on the card so we have to use cash. OK, I get why, but what if I didn't bring cash? So the food was pretty decent, not much to rave or complain about. But for me, I very much prefer supporting businesses with good people that actually appreciate their customers a bit. I've been a customer of Boiling Wok for several years, and it's always been my go-to Chinese restaurant when I need something delicious for the whole family and can be enough for left overs. There's a great variety of dishes, the food tastes good, and it's very budget-friendly. I truly hope they never change their lunch/ dinner specials because I honestly think that's what makes them stand out. The food isn't super high-end quality, but it's good and for the price, it honestly tastes even better. That said, over the past year I've noticed some changes. The food doesn't seem as well-seasoned as it used to be, and the braised pork belly, which is one of my favorite dishes, has been tough a few times. I'm guessing they may have changed chefs because there's definitely a difference, though it's not bad enough to stop me from ordering. I usually order takeout, and all the meals come with free rice and soup, which I really appreciate. My one major complaint is the rice. It's often hard and doesn't taste fresh, like it was made in a large batch and reused the next day. That's been pretty consistent and a bit disappointing. We tried a new restaurant in Rosemead that offers a Lunch Special Menu. We wanted to compare the dishes to our other favorite lunch spots. First of all, it was not busy at all at about 1pm on January 2nd. We were seated and given menus and water/tea right away. The waiter (owner?) took our order and brought us a house bone broth soup which had small pieces of pork and vegetables (pictured but only after 3 bowls were already served. We ordered the Spicy Eggplant, Braised Pork Belly, Deep Fried Tofu in Brown Sauce, and a Fish Fillet with Loofa and mushrooms. The food was served in a timely manner and the dishes came out hot. Overall, the food was probably an 8/10. The tofu dish was not very flavorful. The pork belly dish was pretty good and not too fatty. The spicy eggplant was also pretty good. The Fish Fillet dish was different and we liked the fresh veggies in it. We were also given complimentary rice as part of the lunch special, so that was a plus. The waiter/owner recommended their specialty hot pot dish to us, but we may have to try that next time. We were also told that their specialty hot pot dishes do come as Lunch Special items but are smaller in size. The restaurant was not too small and could maybe seat 60 people or more. I recently saw a post about them so I thought I'd check them out again since they have lunch specials that included rice and soup (also included for to-go orders according to their menu). The first time I went back, they forgot the rice so I had to go back and get it. The second time, I made sure I check that everything is included but the soup was missing. This place.. Qualifies as a true hole-in-the-wall lol. They have this super weird egg smell in the air which I understand can be quite unappetizing to some. They advertise a $~18/lb fish wok which is one of the draws of coming here.. BUT, they do a lot of upselling here.. The $~18/lb is for their standard frozen fish, if you want their other fish the price goes up PER LB as well as the size of the fish! It's the whole fish or nothing so, for 2 people, she kept pushing the 4-6lb fishes that were $24 and $34 a lb.. That would be been $100-$200 just for 2 people! Eventually we told her we didn't want it anymore, and she suggested frozen fish at $~18/lb, so we got 2 lbs of that. Very off-putting the mental gymnastics needed to order.. It was really good, actually! But because of the smell, annoying upselling service, and small parking lot, it's really hard to recommend. Never take the risk of trying this place! It's the worst of the worst--if I could give a negative rating, I'd give it a -10. We ordered three dishes, and the bill was nearly $200! Boiling fish + clay pot rice + salt and spicy tofu, nothing fancy! They asked if we wanted live or frozen fish, and we chose live. But as Cantonese people, we know the difference, and that fish definitely tasted dead! The clay pot rice was another disaster; it came premixed with just two pieces of preserved pork, no vegetables, and a bit of sausage. To top it off, the rice was half way cooked!
