We asked if we could combine tables so we could all sit together and it was a firm (and somewhat short) no. We were considering leaving as I was with guests from out of town, and the server was so confident in the food quality, price, and value that he was completely ready and okay with us leaving after having been seated and served water. It was a jarring first experience, but the server himself was very nice after we decided to stay. I've never had anything else but good things to say about the staff and establishment. There's a new ramen shop in Fairfax, and it is delicious! Kimen Ramen and Izakaya took over where the old Panda Cafe used to be near Starbucks. The dining room is on the smaller, cozier side but it's about what I'd expect for a ramen shop. The decor is so cute and full of anime and Japanese decor. There are a few tables that can handle up to a party of 4 comfortably but probably not more than that. I tried the karaage appetizer to start-- the dipping sauce was delicious and they serve it with a lemon, as is the traditional way. Next up was the ramen. I had the miso ramen with pork chashu. The broth was flavorful and the egg was perfectly jammy. A lot of places don't serve the eggs to that level of doneness (i.e., a little underdone), so this was perfect. My friend had the spicy ramen with pork and a side of corn and said that it was tasty. Better than other ramen places we had visited in the area recently. I tried some of the broth and it had a good spice level. Not too over powering. Overall, the service and food here was excellent. I'm so happy to have another ramen place in the area that can serve up tasty ramen at a good price. I will absolutely be coming back! read more

It's a new spot that can satisfy my cravings for ramen in Fairfax! Along with ramen, they also have a variety of appetizers, donburi and curry donburi. We started with the Pork Chashu Bun and Takoyaki. The pork was tender and flavorful paired with spicy mayo and kewpie mayo. I loved the Takoyaki, but wait a little bit before taking a bite because it is very hot! We tried the Shoyu Ramen and the Chicken Katsu Curry. The broth was tasty and not too salty. Stopped here for dinner while in town for a convention. We have been to several ramen places over the years, and this was a new one. VERY SMALL PLACE - some seating outside but for the most part 5-6 tables along with high top wall bar for single seating as well. As a foursome we came in and sat quickly. We ordered a round of appetizers including the gyoza and sausages. The gyoza was good; however, the inside was cold. These were obvious frozen and not fried long enough at a proper temp. They were larger than the usual size you get at ramen places but - the cold inside gave me gas station microwave burrito vibes. The sausages were a new concept to me - Cupples ordered, but were pretty good - had a nice spice to them and came with spicy Mayo. I ordered the pork miso ramen which - I'm almost positive has a whiter broth than normal but the waitress gave me a different one. Don't know - wish I could have provided a photo of my ramen - and along with everyone at the table, I could have swore I took a pic of it but - the chashu had a nice grill to it while still being tender and very soft. The prices are also some of the best I've seen when it comes to ramen. Highly encourage you to come here after 9 PM as the late night vibes just hit different. Anyways on to the actual food: Tamago Menchi Katsu: This fucking slaps. I've never had this before, but it's like a boiled egg coated in ground pork and fried. You will not regret ordering this once you sink your teeth into the crispy pork shell and down onto the gooey egg. It really is sensational. Heads up, the sauce is very potent and can come off strong. I think it tastes best w/o it, but if you want to try it, I suggest you only add a tiny bit of it first. Shoyu Ramen: What really stands out to me is their pork meat and seasoned egg. The pork has a unique rich smoky flavor to it and the seasoned egg is just bursting with umami flavor. They have otaru beer it's very good. I just came back from otaru. I swear by it, it's good. You can get soju anywhere but this is the first place I saw that has this beer. Recently, I had occasion to stay at a hotel near this Ramen place. Upon entering, I found myself transported to another location somewhere beyond my imagination. The ambience was that of a Ramen place, but also felt much like a comic book store. I was quickly seated and given a menu. I ordered the pork Katsu curry, a favorite of mine for many years. This is a dish that I have prepared at home, eaten in a variety of restaurants, and had at homes where I was a guest. I was expecting a bit of comfort in the taste, but what was delivered was so much more. The chef delivered, a high-quality meal at a very reasonable price. If I lived locally, I would return frequently for this culinary comfort. The vibrancy of the curry, the texture on the pork Katsu, and the remaining elements of the meal left a wonderful memory in my mind, and in my heart. This place was a 6/10 for me. It wasn't really sanitary. Chopsticks and utensils were on the table. Maybe they switch them out daily. How would I know. Someone could sneeze or lick them and I'd have no clue. Maybe touch the utensils with their hands and the next person seated at that table would not have a clue. Okay first off, this restaurant is SO CUTE. It is, admittedly, a small one- seems like most people get their food to go. The walls are absolutely covered in all sorts of older Asian art in the form of wall paper, and a lot of it looks like retro advertisements. (Not that I would know, obviously- I can barely speak English without a terrible stutter and questionable grammar on my worst days.) Music sounds like a ton of popular songs on the radio, though it's a little loud, I didn't ask for them to turn it down because I don't have a headache for once that gets worse with sound. Server was patient with my idiocy fueled by a lack of water and food today, and didn't get mad when I spoke at a speech and pitch understood by squirrels and no one else.
