Regrettably only my second visit and it was just as good as I remembered on my first visit. I ordered the Pho Beef Noodle Soup with rare steak on the side. The broth was tasty and hot enough to cook my rare steak to perfection. I hate overcooked meats, and the brisket and rare steak are of great quality here. Kim's Vietnamese Food is a spot for a very hungry person. Huge, generous portions for only $9.75! For me, I can make two meals out of my order. I recommend sharing an order if you are not too hungry and getting a side of the giant sized egg rolls. They are on the meaty side and very crispy. Perfect combo of savory noodle soup and crispy goodness. This is my kind of comfort food. I just wish they had a clear noodles option like some of the places in South Sacramento. This place is absolutely phenomenal!! This is owned by the most kind family. The ingredients are fresh and this pho broth is the best I've EVER had! Their menu is simple and everything on it is absolutely delicious. I work in a State building nearby and would come at least twice a week for lunch with co-workers pre pandemic. Anyone I bring becomes a returning customer because this place is just somewhere you will always come back to satisfy your pho, banh mi or spring roll cravings. I got the spring rolls to go and they were the size of burritos and so fresh. The noodles were soft and the greens crispy, the peanut sauce amazing. Kim's has some of the best marinated chicken and Banh mins in the downtown Sacramento area. I usually come here to grab a sandwich, calling ahead of time (usually takes about 10 minutes) and grabbing it to-go. At only $6.50, a sandwich can usually last me two meals and the chicken is always just right! The other dishes are just okay. The egg rolls are too big to be Southeast Asian (usually they are small and more crispy) and taste like they could be from Costco? The pho could be better -- I usually only eat the broth and pho and can buy that separately at other places without the meat. But this place does not budge in only selling it as an entire set instead of selling some individually especially if I'm sick and just want broth. It's unfortunate because thy could make a good amount of money selling the broth and/or soup for $3 a piece so that people who don't want the meat or other dressings can still get what they want; oh well... read more

The Pho comes in a bowl bigger than your head and it is to die for. The broth is rich and full of flavor but not overloaded with fat. The banh mi sandwich reminds me of the ones I use to get off the street of Saigon. Simple and delicious! I prefer the chicken over the pork. They are only open until 2:00pm and they can get quite the line going but you can always call ahead. The prices are fair especially for being located downtown. Check them out! Talk about a hidden gem! This is one of my new favorite places to eat downtown! I happened in here around 1:45pm and was greeted with no line whatsoever. I ordered at the counter and received my very affordable banh mi within 5 minutes. The staff was all very friendly and I was beyond excited to try my sandwich. I got the BBQ pork banh mi and oh my goodness it was delicious! It was more than enough food for lunch, the bread was crispy and delicious, the meat was seasoned perfectly, the veggies were pickled wonderfully and the sandwich was overall delicious. It did not quite hit the mark of banh mi in Vietnam but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The pork was a bit fatty so based on personal preference I may try the chicken next time. But it did not take away from the sandwich one bit. I will certainly be back to Kim's to try the rest of the menu and get more of these wonderful sandwiches. This is a great hole-in-the-wall lunch spot. The menu is very basic with the most popular Vietnamese lunch dishes, like banh mi, pho, bun, and beef and chicken with rice. There is a wonton soup with shrimp that I have not tried yet, but that's for my next visit. I actually tried to go there yesterday just before noon, but the restaurant was completely packed and the line was to the door. Today, I waited until 12:45 and was seated quickly. (Note: even though there are about 2 dozen seats out front, there is another small back room with another 4 or 5 tables.) Typically, I get the banh mi to go, but today I wanted pho which doesn't really work for takeout. They have the best banh mi's in the area. The beef pho is huge! It has flank, brisket, and beef balls. It comes with the traditional plate with basil, sprouts, jalapeno, and lime on the side. I dumped the whole thing in, of course. At the counter, you can ask for chili oil which I also added. At the table they also have Sriracha, vinegar, and hoisin, fish, and soy sauces. It was exactly what I was looking for. Although, I had a hard time stopping, I finally had to call it quits halfway through. There's no other place near the Capitol that does pho as well. Yes, there are fancier places where you don't have to wait, and yes, there are places that you can drive that might have better pho overall, but if you are working in the area and need pho quickly, go here. read more

The café in my building serves one that I am crazy about, but I thought, working downtown, I should check out other places before I declare that this one is The Best. First up: Kim's Vietnamese on J. Pretty consistent reviews, small menu, decent prices. The service was fast and friendly. I was in and out in 8 minutes with my teriyaki pork Vietnamese sandwich (aka banh mi) for $5.41 with tax. The size was good, but the look of the sandwich left something to be desired. It just didn't look particularly appealing- kinda boring. Also, they didn't cut it in half (I guess I just assumed this was standard practice with such a large sandwich). I removed the jalapenos (I forgot to ask for it without) and dug in. Meh. It was okay. Not great. I didn't care for the pork, which was a little fatty and also the teriyaki flavor didn't add in my opinion. The pickled vegetables were just blah. Not a lot of flavor. Even the bread was boring. Overall, it just fell flat. I don't want to rate the restaurant poorly overall just off this one experience, but as far as the banh mi, it's 2 stars. I tried the rare steak pho, and let's just say I'll be setting up a direct deposit of my paycheck into Kim's account this winter. For $8, you get a huge bowl of soup, mostly full, with tons of noodles and broth. I like the flavor of the broth, but I always dress it up with hoisin and Sriracha anyway. After I've added lime, bean sprouts, and basil, I still end up with a heaping helping and have never successfully finished more than 2/3 of the bowl. They give you a lot more meat than I've seen at other places, but admittedly some of the poor is kind of fatty and crappy quality. Given that they give me more than I can eat, I kind of just pick out the best pieces of meat and still feel full, happy, and that I got my money's worth. One star off for crappy chopsticks. I normally wouldn't deduct a star for something so minor, but I actually got a 1 1/2 inch splinter through my finger the last time I tried using the chopsticks they supply. Now, I literally bring my own. That's right, Kim's Vietnamese: BYOCS. Service is friendly and quick, and though it seems like there won't be enough seating, I always manage to find a place. FYI, be sure to arrive there before 12 noon or else you'll be standing up and eating. The lemongrass chicken, while greasy, is flavorful and satisfying - just not exactly the "light" option it sounded like/I was hoping it would be (I now realize there are no light options here). He claims I growled at him while snarfing it down before passing out into a blissful coma. Today was a windy day and i was cold and i was hungry and i was in midtown and i wasted to trap something hot but not sandwiches but not ramen and some how i wanted some pho. pho just sound so comfort. so i went on yelp and guess what kim viet food popped up and here i go walking there to try the chicken pho since i am a pho ga fan. so this is how this place work. you walk in and go straight to the register and look at the menu and order it and then pay. i promise you it won't take long to decide because the menu is limited and small and easy to choose its either a noodle soup or just sandwiches. in my mind i already knew what i wanted to try so i chose pho ga. the pho ga arrived shortly about 5 mins after i chose a table and sit down. the seats are limited here and is small and not recommended for large groups. they open at 10 am til 3pm. i came here at 10 am and they were open and ready to go. they had about 4 customers while i was dining there and observing how busy they get because from previous reviews they get pack around 11 isn to 12 with state workers. my total cost me 9 something under 10 bucks. tipping is not required since you pay first and they don't give service but drop the food off to the table. ok so now lets get to the pho ga which is chicken noodle soup and is what i ordered. it comes with shrimp but i request none inside. ok the bowl was a good size for the amount paid. it was more of a medium to borderline of large size. there was plenty of noodles inside and lots of chicken pieces inside. the chicken is mixed with dark and white meat. now let me get to the taste and texture. the chicken is steamed and it was very tender and not overcooked but it was well done. the chicken pieces were lightly salted or marinated because when you eat the chicken by itself it tasted lightly salted with flavor. this is how i usually make my steam chicken. now the noodles were the white kind and it was just regular pho noodles. the noodles were stuck in a pile til u gently remove and spread it out with chopsticks. the very first thing i taste was the broth and it was so sweet. i already knew this holy pho broth was spiced up with tons of MSG in other words sodium. the broth was more on the sweet side than salty side. if its sweet its means more msg. i knew that afterwards I'm going to be very thirsty from msg and need bottles of water. and as I'm typing this review from 6 hrs later my mouth feels dry and dehydrated and needs water. i didn't like the sweet taste to the broth so i asked for the hot chili oil to cover the broth up but it didn't help. so overall i thought the broth was too sweet and not the right flavor chicken broth i have tasted from other places such as pho any dao on stockton blvd. now pho any dao got some good chicken broth and thats what i call good and not sweet like here. i will come back and try the beef noodle soup in the future. maybe its just the chicken broth made that way. some places i have tried the beef and chicken broth is cooked differently and yes it taste different. i do like the convenience location of this place and is nearby everything and my hangout spots as well. the price and portion is fair. i am willing to try the beef noodle in the future like i said. if its the same as the chicken pho then i won't return. but i already know better downtown pho won't be the same as the pho on stockton blvd which is way better. read more

Kim's is a small Vietnamese eatery sitting amid grimed and graffitied hovels just east of 10th on J Street. The shop itself is no looker--a glorified hallway with spartan decor and a handful of simple tables and chairs--but as you enter and bask in the aroma, you realize that upscale furnishings do not a good restaurant make. You order deli style, take a seat and minutes later, you're wielding a sriracha bottle and mixing to your heart's content. The pho comes with a plate of bean sprouts, sprigs of mint, lemon wedges and sliced jalapenos, allowing you to customize as you like. Please do. Variety is the spice of pho. It's important to mention that I've never tried the teriyaki plate or the fried rice or the Vietnamese sandwiches here. My loss, I'm sure, but I can't seem to get past the pho. It's this giant bowl of noodles, veggies, peppers, mint leaves and slightly salty soup. It's zesty. It's soothing. It's satisfying. Who would've thought that an East Bay girl would find some delicious Vietnamese food in good ol' Sac? Kim's was my go-to lunch location during my two month internship downtown. Even though I was on I &13th, it wasn't too bad of a walk down to grab some food. Usual orders: beef pho, teriyaki chicken sandwich, or pork sandwich. At first I thought $6.50 was a bit much for noodles, until I discovered how much they give you. The bowl was bigger than my head and they don't scrimp on the meat. Good mix of flank, beef balls, and noodles. This is what I usually get when I go in for lunch gatherings with other interns. If I'm eating by myself or I want something really quick, then a sandwich is the way to go. For approx. $4, they are quite filling. Both chicken and pork are equally delicious. Sometimes I prefer the chicken because it's a bit leaner. Pro's of Kim's: great tasting food for great prices Con's: Service can get bogged down if you go at prime lunch time (11:30am-1pm). It took me a year and a half, but I tried something other than pho or bahn mi at Kim's. I ended up getting the BBQ pork and shrimp over rice noodles. The dish came with plenty of rice noodles, BBQ pork, 3 pieces of shrimp, and an eggroll all on top of a bed of lettuce. The noodles were around rice noodles cooked just about right and garnished with some mint leaves, green onions, and bean sprouts. On the side there was a cup of fish sauce to add to your noodles for seasoning. The dish was satisfying overall, but it seemed a little off. I think if they gave me less noodles and maybe an extra slice or two of meat it would have been just right. The fish sauce on the side was good, but the flavor was diluted a little from all of the noodles. After trying this dish, I still stand by my original comment. Stick with the pho and the bahn mi and you won't be disappointed. EDIT: I had to give this place 5 stars for their pho alone. I've been going around to other pho places and they just don't compare. I found this little hole in the wall place on J street while on jury duty, it's only a few blocks from the court house. It's a small restaurant with maybe about ten small tables. You order at the counter, take your number and find a seat. It's a simple menu, pho, vermicelli dishes, and banh mi. The food came out pretty quick and you can have a sit down meal in less than 40 minutes. I ordered the beef pho. The serving is generous, what would typically be an extra large bowl in other establishments. The broth was slightly on the sweet side but full of flavor. After adding the hoisen sauce and a squeeze of lime, it balanced out fine. I was only able to finish half. Overall, a good meal. This will be my to go place when on jury duty. I'm not a fan of beef balls, but it sounded better then chicken pho. We got our water and took our table and the food quickly followed. The pho also came with sliced beef, now that's more my style. I ate it all. The bowl is huge. I barely made a dent. They gave you a plate of bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeno. I ate 2 of the 3 and though it was good. I also added a little hoisin sauce. I would come back. The place was small, well organized, fast service, tasty food, reasonably priced, and clean. I'm not sure where you'd park if you drove, but everyone walks. I've never heard or seen this place until my cousin told me we were going here. It's hidden away in an okay part of town. Parking kind of sucks. This is a restaurant where the set up is geared towards State workers. So if you go and think you'll have service and sit down it's not geared towards that. There are a few tables and seats where you can sit down, though. When I entered I was very surprised how small and how crowded it was. I was expecting a bigger menu. They have a sheet of paper with items you can choose from about 10 items. But, I think that's a good thing. Too many choices gets confusing sometimes. I ordered the Pho. I like this place so much better than the Vietnamese place before it in this spot. Yummy Choice or something like that... The food is much better now. The sandwiches are $3.50! That's a bit high for a Vietnamese sandwich when you compare it to places in South Sac but it is amazing for downtown. The sandwich is a good size and has plenty of filling. I always get the grilled pork sandwich. It's good, but fyi a bit on the fatty side. Their pho is also very good on a cold day. I like that I can order individual egg rolls here for a dollar. I love egg rolls but don't like ordering 5 at a time, 1 or 2 usually satisfies my craving. The egg rolls are ok... have had better, but these are okay. The cold vermicelli noodles were not the best though. I prefer going somewhere else for those. But as long as I stick to the sandwiches and the pho I am fine. They are an amazing deal for downtown Sacramento, land of the $10 sandwiches. The people here are pretty nice. The place is really small, but that's fine as I always order to go. Love the banh mi's! The bread is fresh, the sandwichs are inexpensive and consistently delicious every time. My only issues are the meat quality sometimes is lacking. There can be huge chunks of fat on the grilled pork. They don't de-stem the cilantro (they put the whole sprig on), and the jalapeno's aren't de-seeded. Chicken pho! Kim's Vietnamese is one of those hole in the wall places downtown Sacramento that you would normally pass by unless someone recommended it or your read a review on line. Only someone who works or lives downtown would know that a place like this is hard to come by in this area. Prices may not be as reasonable as Stockton blvd, but for downtown its the best vietnamese food with the best value. The restuarant is very narrow with seating along the wall for maybe 30 people. They have a make shift table with a register on it to take orders, the kitchen in the back with a service window, and a fountain drink machine on the side. The menu is limited to about a dozen or so items, when you first walk in you can see pictures of the food above the service window. The Pho Ga is good! the broth tastes home made with the right amount of seasoning, a large portion of organic or free range chicken. 4-5 shimp with tail's not over cooked or too chewy. The noodles were cooked perfectly not to soggy with the right amount of chew. It came with a side plate of sprouts, lemon slice, mint, and japenero's. They had the usual condiments siracha and oyster sauce. One thing I do wish they had was the little side dishes in which to mix your sauce and dip your noodles in. The BBQ pork sandwich I got to go, because I couldn't eat it all in one sitting and I wanted to try them both. I will have to update my review once I have consumed it. Although Kim's isn't the most comfortable lunch counter to eat at, the pho is some of the tastiest in downtown Sacramento. The menu here is simple, a few pho varieties (beef, chicken, and seafood), banh mi, and spring rolls. Since Sacramento is north and colder than most of California, you'll see a lot of people ordering pho, and I've tried the pho tai (beef pho) twice on winter weather days and it was some pretty solid comfort food. For less than $10 the bowl is a good size and has a rich broth, a good portion of meat, and a generous offering of the fresh component of bean sprouts, mint/basil, and lemon. Its small and its simple. It could even be called plain. However, the tiny menu packs a lot of punch! There are no more than five items on the menu, a few types of pho and egg rolls. The first time I went I got the chicken pho. I have to admit the type of chicken that is used in these types of soups is not my favorite, but the broth and veggies were great! The second time I went I got brave and tried ordering an all veggie pho. This is not on the menu, but I took my chances. It confused the staff a little bit, but Kim's rose to the occasion and I was rewarded with an all veggie, rich and yummy soup. I am sure the broth was not vegetarian, but I don't care! I also love that they have industrial size bottles of hoisin sauce on the table. I love that in my pho! Even though it is small inside I have never had trouble finding a seat or getting served quickly. For downtown area, their chicken sandwiches (banh mi) are pretty good! It's a little more expensive ($4.26 including tax) than the ones off of Stockton Blvd but still not a bad price. They're pretty generous with their portion. I would've like their sandwiches more if the bread was toasted. As for pho, I haven't tried it yet. The service is pretty quick. read more
