Small, cozy, with an open kitchen that has a stove that seems to be 100 years old. That's pretty much everything you can say about Kimura's location and that's exactly why I love it. It's hard to not love a place like that. The cooks work right in front of you and the head chef inspecting every plate before it goes out. It immediately gives you a sense belonging. At least to me. Now, atmosphere alone does not a good restaurant make. The food has to be on point. Otherwise, it's just some broken down dive. Kimura however, aces this part. The miso soup I was given when I sat down was a little bit on the salty side but still good. I ordered the Shoyu Ramen and it did not disappoint. While the broth was a little more bold than what I'm used to, the Chashu was spectacularly tender and flavorful. The noodles were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of bite to them. Thank goodness I had ordered extra. So if you're in San Antonio and are looking for an offbeat, non-southwestern/mexican option, I would highly recommend you check them out. read more

Went to Kimura while I was in San Antonio. I was excited to try the ramen as the reviews were pretty good. While the ramen was alright the service was lacking. At the end of the meal the waiter comes over with the check I hand him my credit card and he comes back over with the receipt for me to sign. I grab the receipt and realize my credit card is not on the tray he handed me and he "realized" it too. He spent probably 15 minutes looking around for my card before coming back and telling me he lost it and can't find it but I can call tomorrow and see if they found it. I was leaving the next day. The restaurant did nothing to help or fix the situation. Would not go back or recommend going there unless they fix these kind of issues. read more

Finally found some good Ramen in San Antonio! I have to admit I am extremely picky when it comes to Ramen because I lived in Japan and it just doesn't compare (so my favorite Ramen is still going to be in Japan). Anyhow, with all that said, I really enjoyed the Ramen at Kimura. Tonkotsu with Pork Belly- so far my fave! The broth is delicious. The pork belly was also really caramelized and yummy. Miso Ramen with Pork shoulder- really good broth, usually Miso broth is what I pick, so honestly I would go between this and the tonkostsu. Katsudon- it was OK. Mine was a little salty but its still good just not my favorite. Glad I tried it but it's not for me personally. It is a very tiny place so if you go in the evening it will be challenging to get a table right away (especially if you have a party larger than 4). But when we went in the afternoon, it was quick to get a table. So that's something you keep in mind. OH and one more thing, we noticed that they have different type of noodles in the Ramen. And again I'm basing this on what I know of ramen in Northern Japan...so the tonkotsu has a thinner less yellow noodle (usually this would be a big time no for me, but they cook the noodles well so they have the bite to it and isn't soggy). The Miso Ramen had the traditional slightly thicker yellow noodle, and those were perfect. But I know everyone has there preference so just wanted to put it out there. The ramen was pretty good. Was on a trip. My husband and I went two days in a roll because both of us were sick, and their soup is quite curing and the staff are nice! I had the pork soup noodle for the first night. It was extremely delicious and rich. One con is that you need to wait quite a bit. Had the chicken soup for the second day's lunch, a little bit salty, and definitely not as good as the pork soup I had the first day. We have many good ramen place in NYC. My 9 year old was craving ramen and my husband suggested we try this place out. It was a Saturday night, so naturally they were busy but we were sat within 20 minutes. We ordered the gyoza (pork dumplings) and yakitori (chicken skewers) to start. Both were delicious, and even my picky 6 year old loved it. We had to order another order of yakitori. For entrees, we ordered tantanmen (ramen with chicken soy broth with miso paste,spicy ground pork,soft boiled egg, nori, bok choy and shiitake mushrooms), chicken shoyu ramen (ramen with chicken soy broth, soft boiled egg, nori, green onion, shiitake mushrooms, fishcake and sprouts), chicken yakisoba (stir fried noodles, carrots, carmelized onions, ginger, cabbage, tonkatsu saucespicy mayo, green onions, bonito flakes and nori) and a simple bowl of gohan (steamed rice) for my little one. The flavors were phenomenal! Everything was fresh and made to order. I definitely recommend ordering all dishes as is. Especially with the yakisoba noodles. The combination of sauces gives it a great flavor and you don't want to short yourself on the experience. Only complaints are that it took awhile to get our entrees, but for a busy Saturday night that's to be expected. They also ran out of soda water, but we did get two hand crafted orange sodas before they ran out and my husband settled for hot green tea; all were delicious! All in all a great dinner. I've been to Kimura three times. It's always been a great experience. Establishment has always been clean and we have always been seated immediately. We always make sure to go during the start of happy hour so that we don't have to wait for a table. Well, our last time visiting here, we walked into a pretty empty dining room. Hostess/server took about five minutes to seat us. There were several tables that had not been bussed. All of the empty tables with dirty dishes made the dining room look messy and dirty. We finally got seated and ordered something from the bar. I ordered a plum wine and my boyfriend ordered a draft beer. Neither of our drinks had to be mixed or made but it took over ten minutes for us to get our drinks. I found it a bit odd since there was only one other occupied table in the establishnent. Despite the messy tables and lengthy wait time to get our drinks, when my Tonkotsu ramen came out, it was worth it. The food here is spectacular!! I absolutely love the pork belly ramen. The pork belly was crispy and flavorful. The noodles were perfectly cooked. The broth is to die for! I can't say enough about this ramen bowl. During our meal, we ordered another draft beer. This time, it took our server about 15 minutes to get us our draft beer. It was a bit annoying. Had it not been for the messy tables and lengthy time it took to get our drinks (twice), I would've definitely given Kimura five stars. read more

One of my friends sat down and was told in a rude tone "we will put together the two tables, just wait". After being seated, one of my friends said he already knew what he wanted, but Adrian said rudely, "just give us a sec"... Are you fucking kidding me? We order our food. Another table of 5 people seat themselves after we waited for 20 minutes and they somehow get their food first. And even when we got our food, Allie didn't know who ordered what. One of my friends ordered the same tonkatsu ramen he got 3 times before and they messed it up and served him vegetable broth...we told Adrian that we got the wrong broth. She just looked at it and said it was the tonkatsu and it just looks that way. I taste tested it. And mind you, I've lived in Japan so I have a pretty good idea what tonkatsu ramen tastes like. No, that was for sure vegetable broth. I called for Allie to have it double checked and she said she would have the cooks taste test it, when she was just as confident as Adrian saying it looks that way because supposedly the sourcing of the meat changes (or something akin to that explanation). The cooks taste it and sure enough we were right. Unbelievable. At least the owner came and apologized for the incorrect broth and had it remade. Just a blob of caramelized onion under the cutlet, no broth to be found, egg was too firm around the dry cutlet. Chefs out front had food stains on the front of their coat/t-shirt, floor was slippery, a waitress was scraping dried food from a spoon at an unused setting. We placed our order and the waitress kept coming back to the table apologizing that they didn't have half of the items on our order. Once our food arrived it was so salty that it ruined the food. The waitress never refilled our waters, and didn't offer to refill my wife's ice tea. When the bill arrived they had overcharged us for our food, and instead of trying to fix the bill, different servers kept coming to our table explaining that the waitress was new instead of just fixing the bill. Walked in at 8:15 and was quoted a 15-minute wait for two. The place is small, about 7 tables and then some spots at the bar. We waited 35-minutes which is understandable, it looked very busy. When we finally got to our table, I looked around, and 4 tables were waiting for their checks, and 1 table was empty, just lots of plates, etc. The individual who was taking names for the wait, was also running food, behind the bar, and greeting tables/waiting on tables. I got up and asked for menus and water. No one came back for another 5-minutes. We finally ordered appetizers, drinks, and food. Appetizer came out before the drink. I asked when it was coming, the guy said I am so sorry let me go get it (again, I think they forgot - by the way cocktails are $10). My husband and I both had the pork belly ramen, it was good, but the service was seriously so bad, we won't be going back. I can't speak to the food, as the host was so rude and inconvenienced by us that we left. He was very clearly exasperated to be dealing with us. It was a packed house and there was one woman sitting in the middle of three chairs, the one on either side available. I made the mistake of ordering the daily special with miso. Miso is boring. I knew better. Next time, I'm getting the pork broth. The special came with a half boiled egg which was as dull as the miso. I added a pickled egg which was tangy creamy goodness. Hint, always add an egg. The slices of pork were amazingly tender. I went on a Saturday night and only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table even though I was told to expect 20. The place is relatively small but has a cool vibe with the music and design. The service wasn't the best but also not the worst as the server was friendly. It took a good while for the server to come to our table and provide us with menus but I'm not really a picky diner when it comes to service as long as the person is not outright rude. I had the tonkotsu ramen but I also tried my date's shoyu. I really liked the tonkotsu better, as I found the shoyu to be too salty and bitter for my taste. read more

My boyfriend introduced me to this place and I was so excited cause I love ramen and I had never been to a place that served real ramen before and let me tell you it was so delicious. The real thing that I unexpectedly fell in love with was their Katsudon. Of course I said yes, why would I just be standing there. She asked the guy behind the bar, who seemed to have an attitude, to take my order. He meandered around to giving me a menu, and that's the last I heard from him. I stood there deliberately for another 7-10 minutes to see if he would ask if I was ready to order, to no avail; he never asked, so I politely put the menu on the counter and walked out. If I patronize a business to spend my hard earned money, and I can't get basic customer service or even an acknowledgement that I'm standing in front of an emp, that's an establishment I will never visit again, and one I would definitely not recommend!
