What a treat we had to have Earth as our server! A little cultural history lesson but many Thai have nicknames and don't go by their actual names and this is one way that Kin Dee is so authentic! Now, Earth, he's the best! Made some really great recommendations and you don't want to miss their happy hour for $10 appetizers and half off their signature cocktails!!!! The cocktails are all themed around Thailand and I highly recommend their Asia-tini with pear and lychee flavors, but you can really taste the pear come through! I also tried their butterfly pea tea margarita and it was both beautiful and delicious! We ordered: - money bags* not authentically Thai, but really tasty and so crispy! It's a great shareable starter! - grilled pork skewers (the meat lacked a bit of flavor and was kinda dry) - pad see ew - crab fried rice* (MKT price) but hard to find this authentic dish in Thailand and in Houston! They use blue crab shipped from New Zealand if I heard that correctly... - and a green curry noodle dish (forgot the name) For dessert we ordered the mango sticky rice with pandan rice and homemade coconut ice cream using by the same recipe from the owners hometown! I've been to Kin Dee a few times and each time I've ordered something different. As I reflect on this restaurant, I think this is a great place to have drinks and appetizers. The butterfly pea tea- slightly sweet, but full of flavor and seems like a unique offering here. The Thai tea is also great and my favorite drink of choice at Thai restaurants. I love that when the weather is nice, they have a small space outdoors where you can dine-in. They also have a separate bar and indoor space. In the evenings (at least on weekends) they tend to have a live performer which adds to the overall ambiance while dining. Onto the food: Two of my favorite appetizers are the "Money Bags" and the Thai Flower Dumpling. The Thai Flower Dumpling is made using the butterfly pea tea leaves to create the purple hue. It is filled with peanuts, sugar, and a sauce. Extremely tasty. Money bags kind of remind me of a smaller version of an egg roll. It's made with shrimp and chicken. I've tried a variety of their entrees include: Khao Soi, Green Curry, Panang Curry and the Crab Meat Fried Rice. If I had an area of opportunity to describe for this place, it would be the entrees. The Crab Meat Fried rice was a let down for me because all I could taste was salt. The rest of the entrees were okay. None of them were what I would describe as "amazing" or even something I'd even crave to try again. With that being said, I like it for what it is. Are there better Thai spots in Houston? This review is based on a dine-in experience of a weekend dinner with a party of 3. Pros: Nice and casual with DJ music. Our waitress was awesome. She told us about their happy hour. She gave us privacy but checked in with us when needed. Happy hour till 6:30 got us half price on beer and appetizers. And yes, they have two Thai beer -- Chang and Singha. Chicken Satay was on point and so did the crab omelette Panang curry and glass noodles salad were alright but I'd try something else next time. I loved the coconut ice cream with condiments on the side but everyone loved the Pandan cake. The price was reasonable $120 for 2 apps, 2 beer, 3 main dishes, and 2 desserts. . Cons: It was difficult to do family style with their entrees because they put steamed rice inside every dish instead of in separate bowls. There was a big no-no on steamed rice. It was undercooked and so hard to swallow. One minor thing was the manager who came and asked us about our dining experience after we finished our dinner. We all saw you walking around the whole night and you just came in at the end. It was not a busy night at all dude! LOL In summary, I gave Kin Dee four stars from rounding up from 3.5. I'm normally a big fan of papaya salad but I tried this crunchy salad because it sounded interesting and wasn't super appealing to my own taste buds. The chicken wings were good, not dry. Somehow I had never noticed Kin Dee as I have passed in probably hundreds of times since it's opening in 2020 as it's in opposite end of retail center where Fl*wer Child is. It was recommended in the foodies group I'm in so my husband and I went for dinner and enjoyed everything we got. We had the glass noodles w/chicken, drunken noodles w/shrimp and port belly skewers. Portions were good and we were able to take some leftovers home which was a bonus. The name of our server has escaped my brain and I have no paper receipt to refer to but she took excellent care of us, answering any questions and offering helpful suggestions. Went here for dinner for the first time with my family to celebrate my sister in law's birthday. The place is cute and cozy in a nice plaza. There's a few parking spots around. We ordered the Thai flower dumpling, chicken satay, shrimp Tom yum soup, and shrimp in a blanket for appetizers. Chicken satay wasn't good too sweet. The dumplings and fried shrimp wontons were nice. The Tom yum soup was very flavorful! For entrees, we ordered the drunken noodles, stir fried Thai basil chicken, and shrimp panang curry. The drunken noodles were very good loved them we ordered without meat. The panang curry wasn't light and delicious. The water tasted weird, and the Thai tea was extremely sweet. The strawberry lemonade was very sour. There are two things that made me rate this place 3/5 stars even though the food was not that bad. I've definitely tried better Thai places but I did enjoy the food here. 1. The dj was playing loud club type music and it was very noisy. 2. The waitress was extremely rude - she forgot that we ordered stir fried Thai basil chicken and when we asked politely in the end she just rudely replied with a face on that I asked you all if you needed anything else and you said no such bad manners and ethics in the service industry that we didn't say anything further because of the very unacceptable behavior and attitude of the waitress. So it really put us off and my husband really wanted to have the Thai basil and we got upset by this. You don't leave your customers this way so unprofessional! I think we met the kitchen manager he was very nice and greeted us on the way out. We ordered the drink flight, money bags, pork skewers, Thai basil chicken, and a side of the spice "wheel" (which, oddly enough, came served in soup spoons). Every dish was absolutely delicious. The money bags were perfectly crisp with a generous filling, the pork skewers were tender and flavorful, and the Thai basil chicken was packed with bold, aromatic spices. Even the white rice was impressively good. The food was well worth the price, and I'd go back just for that alone. My only minor critiques: the amount of sauce served with the dishes felt a bit limited, and the spice wheel presentation was unconventional. I love Makiin and was very interested in visiting Kin Dee after being told it was the same owner as Makiin. As soon as I walked in I knew it was as the style is the same less striking and more natural light but a perfect family dinner spot. I will say cost wise the prices at Kin Dee are lower than Makiin but excitingly the food tastes just and perfect and the service is a 10/10! My favorite thing is the decor and live music being played. I usually really dislike live music as I feel it's usually chaotic and you can't chat. This was different as the music did not cause a disturbance but added to the ambience. I had the Northern curry and it was so flavorful and the portions extremely generous. My mom had the pad thai and loved it, lastly we shared an order of wings and the mango sticky rice. Both of these exceeded our expectations! The star of the show was definitely the mango sticky rice but I might be bias as I'm a coconut obsessive and the coconut ice cream was so perfect. This is a beautiful restaurant. Very intimate and the ambiance is welcoming. Make a reservation before going so secure a seat. So far it's busy and the tables are moving. Went on a Friday night and they had a DJ for the night. The flower dumpling was very interesting. It's a doughy dumpling filled with nuts and sugar, very sweet with a little kick from the red chili you add to it. I didn't enjoy the texture very much of the dumpling. I've been here twice and both times the food was really good. For the first time I came I went on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy. We had a group of 3 but got seated pretty quick. We ordered the all in one appetizer to share so we could try a multitude of things. For my entree I ordered the crab fried rice and I believe I got it medium spicy and let me tell you it was spicer than anticipated, but still tasty. I also ordered the butterfly pea margarita which was also good for what you expect of a decent marg. The second time I came on a Thursday night during Houston Restaurant Weeks. So I ordered from that menu. I got the pork skewers which came out almost immediately. They came with three skewers and sticky rice. It had good flavor and were tender. After that the service slowed a bit and it took awhile to receive my entree which was chicken drunken noodles. I ordered it mild spicy and it was just enough spice to give you a little cough at the first bite. The noodles were super yummy and they gave you a good portion. For dessert I got the crème brûlée which I thought was mid, I've had better but it wasn't bad. We ordered drinks, the Tom kha margarita is award winning and I completely understand why. It's a little savory, not that sweet at all, very refreshing. The lychee martini was my favorite- hints of lychee and pear, a little sweeter but very pleasant. Flower pea dumplings are so unique- the outside dough is reminiscent of mochi, the filling is like a savory peanut filling. Reminds me of tang yuan but more savory. Crunchy salad is very refreshing, the jicama has a great texture. The whole dish is very light and the flavors are kind of fruity. Great app! Drunken noodles with chicken were very fresh, the flavors were spot on and I appreciated the amount of green veggies. Noodle texture was perfect. Not overcooked at all. Southern style green curry was also delish, very coconut forward and full of chicken and veggies. I like the inclusion of eggplant! The vermicelli noodles are kind of fun as well rather than rice. The green curry had generous amounts of tender chicken, flavorful veggies like eggplant, zucchini, bamboo shoots, and basil leaves. It was very creamy and smooth...I soaked up every drop with the rice noodles. The shrimp tom yum noodle soup was one of the best I've had in Houston! Also with a handful of shrimp, it was a generous portion that was well executed in a broth that was boldly hot and sour...just the way it should be. Our server did give us an option for mild, medium, hot, or extra hot and we had the medium for both curry and noodle soup. It tasted wonderful since we could still taste the flavor of our food without it the heat taking over the flavor. The Thai tea creme brulee was such a delightful way to end the meal. It was our first time here, and our waiter really made us feel welcome.
