Enjoyed most of the food served here; it's a very nice blend of presentation, flavor profiles, and execution. Plenty of parking available, which is always nice for a nicer dinner service inside the loop. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior ambiance is very modern and cozy without being too dark like some other spots.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Cocktails are very good looking and tastes great. Oysters (4/5), Wagyu tartare (4.5/5), broccolini (1.5/5, a bit undercooked and the bok choy was a bit sloppy), local corn (3.5/5), lamb belly (4/5), carrots (4/5), green curry (3/5), fried chicken (3.5/5). Portions are fairly small but most of the dishes were solid. The best thing we had were the Wagyu tartare and oysters. Overall a decent date spot!

Great service! The staff is kind, quick, and provide a personalized feel to dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space is intimate and warm perfect for smaller groups and dates.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The cocktails are well curated and complex. When it comes to the food you can tell there is a lot of intentionality. The preset menu didn't appeal to us, so we ordered Al a carte. The gulf shrimp ceviche, oysters in beef tallow, and tteokboki/rice cakes were my favorites. I did not have a lot of love for the lamb shoulder and brisket. I love the concept of Houston representation coming through all the dishes, but something about the combinations didn't resignate for me in taste value. Still an overall beautiful experience.

I had the opportunity to try Jūn during their dinner service on a Wednesday night. It wasn't very busy, but we made reservations anyway. Parking gets full because it also shares a lot with a Pilates studio - Happy Hour Pilates. The entrance to Jūn seemed a bit inconspicuous to me. It's a carved, wooden door. Push or pull to open? I couldn't tell you. Haha. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance was cute and earthy. It was dimly lit. The vibe reminded me a little bit of Tatemo but with more decor. If you've ever been to Suerte in Austin, it kind of feels like that but in a smaller scale.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I like the feeding utensil holders like some Michelin restaurants offer. As far as drinks, I had one of their Zero proof cocktails, Tamarind Arnold Palmer. It was delicious and refreshing like a lemon iced tea. I could've had a pitcher of that! They don't offer zero proof alternative brands like Ritual and Seedlip, but it was still good. Maybe eventually they'll offer it. My friend ordered the Gulf shrimp aguachile with avocado, taro, shrimp oil and loved it. She also had the red fish with guajillo and pickled melon. She wasn't as big a fan of that. I tried a bite and thought it was very fishy compared to other red fish I've had and a tad dry. The pickled melon had a funky taste. She also ordered the rice cakes which has with mushrooms, yellow bean bechamel, and spiced panko. We were told that it was like mac and cheese. Honestly, it was nothing like that. The bechamel sauce was good, but the rice cakes were dense and chewy like mochi. It's supposed to be that way, so if you're into that texture, you'll like it. If you don't like mushrooms, you can pick them out. I had the local corn with burnt ends xo, scallion, and spicy aioli. I very much enjoyed the flavors and take on street corn. For my main, I also had the tandoori marinated lamb belly topped with pickled green tomatoes and had a ring of salted yogurt around it. I've never had lamb belly before, but I am a fan of pork and beef belly, so I wanted to try. I thought it was perfectly tender. The pickled green tomatoes and yogurt help cut through the richness. I wish there were potatoes on the menu to eat it with that weren't salt and vinegar flavored because that's the same flavor profile as the pickled green tomatoes and salted yogurt. For dessert, we each ordered the goat cheesecake with black peppercorn, ginger lychee sorbet, honeycomb candy, and macerated berries. It was good, but either the spice from the black peppercorn or ginger lychee overpowered the cheesecake flavor. Ginger can get spicy. It was so strong that I felt like my sinuses were being cleansed. A little too medicinal for me. I want to try this place during the day when it's their coffee shop, Third Place. I would rate Jūn 3.5 stars and round up to 4. It was so cool to see Chef Henry Lu and Chef Evelyn Garcia in close proximity at the recent Culturemap Tastemaker Awards. I was totally fangirling, but I didn't approach cause I hate to disturb. I also saw Chef Christine Ha. Can you tell I love watching cooking competition shows?! Lol.

My fiance and I brought our mothers here to try the tasting menu for an early Mother's Day celebration. I was really excited to eat here, but ultimately my experience did not live up to the restaurant's reputation. The first two courses on the tasting menu were fantastic (highly recommend the gulf shrimp aguachile and fried head cheese), but every other dish afterwards either lacked textural variety or well rounded flavor. The tamale course was overly soft to the point of mushiness, the carrots course was overwhelmingly spicy for our whole table, and we all agreed that most of the other courses were too salty. Service was friendly, but the courses were rolled out with VERY inconsistent timings (ranging anywhere between 5 minutes to over 25 minutes of waiting in between finishing one course and receiving the next). Our waiter also forgot to bring us our boxed leftovers even after I had reminded him for it while paying for the check. The experience was somewhat worthwhile but I left the restaurant wishing I could have treated our mothers to a smoother experience. - [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance: 4/5[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - Food: 2/5 - Service: 3/5

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Jun was very cozy and romantic.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]You get to sit at the bar or at the counter and watch the open kitchen.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The waiter recommended ordering 4-7 dishes but we ordered 3 and were really full. We ordered the oysters, chicken, and brisket curry. Oysters were rich with beef tallow and had a kick of spice. Chicken was fried well but was a tad expensive (1 thigh and breast for $24). My favorite was the brisket with the celery root puree. It was super yummy with the coconut rice but just wished there was more curry! Small parking lot outside which is rare for the Heights.

Jun fried chicken. Good, nice, crunchy crust. Sous vide, so incredibly tender. But, it can also turn the chicken's protein structure into mush, if left too long in the sous vide station; you can squeeze it like Pla-Doh. Not that there's anything wrong with sous vide. Or this cooking technique. Some would call it "melt in your mouth" tender. Others might say "excellent for people with no teeth". Just an observation, not a complaint. Each person must decide for themself if they like that kind of texture. It's the same effect as a long marinade, which is why the interior of a Chik Fil A chicken breast is so homogeneous. I learned about structural changes with marinade or sous vide in a Kenji Lopez-Alt article, years ago. For those who don't know me, I've been writing about fried chicken recipes for years and also documenting the central Texas German Czech community parish picnics on my The Fried Chicken Blog. So I really enjoy researching and talking about fried chicken. Be sure to bring cash so as not to have to pay the up-charges that may show up on your bill. (I can't remember if they mention these on the menu or not.) Here is what Kenji wrote about that homogenization of the chicken meat a few years back when working on a Chik Fil A copycat recipe. (Not that I would ever patronize that establishment lol): https://www.seriouseats.com/homemade-chick-fil-a-sandwiches-recipe

Don't understand how you could give this place a bad review. It's phenomenal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We came for happy hour on a Saturday. Sat at the bar, I loved the bar! Super comfy and staff are friendly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Personally main dinning space looked dark so bar was ideal.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We tried 4 different types of specialty cocktails, if you come at happy hour they are $3 off. These are craft cocktails, extremely extremely delicious. My favorites were the cocktail with beet and the cocktail with coconut and turmeric. Food was fantastic!! I loved how they served it in waves and not all at the same time. It felt more like a culinary experience. We had the cucumber salad which is a must. Followed by corn, which is good and totally unlike anything I've ever had before. Then the red fish which was sooooo good. Then the pork shoulder with coconut rice and together that was to die for. Plus the salt and vinegar potato's which I'd gladly have as a snack anytime. So so good!! Would come back honestly every week if I could!

Jun was the perfect place to celebrate my husband's birthday dinner. First off, there's a parking lot out front, which is lucky for the Heights area. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable of the menu, and even took photos for us. He recommended we ordered several dishes from each category of the menu so we ordered the following: - Local Corn: really loved the XO sauce it was in - Lamb Belly: honestly wasn't a fan of the lamb with salted yogurt, but hubby loved it - Rice Cake: absolutely loved the soft/crispy contrasting textures here! These were upgraded tteokbokki. - Pork Ribs: loved the five spice sauce and how tender these were - Fried Chicken: so crispy and loved the pairing of the honey For drinks we had the Scarlet Letter, a beautiful and refreshing tiki-style cocktail, and the Miles Away mocktail. Honestly the Miles Away mocktail was the best mocktail I've ever had. We both loved the how strong the passion fruit flavor was. They also brought out a cake to help celebrate hubby's birthday and it was sweetest touch at the end. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance of the restaurant has that overall classy casual vibe, and we'll definitely be back![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Pro Tip: if you're pregnant, they have one of the largest mocktail menus in town!

After hearing about JUN for many years, I'm so glad I finally got to try it with three good friends on a recent trip to Houston! We were celebrating 3 of the 4 attendees' birthdays (mine included!) and we were treated so well the whole night! The kitchen was also great about allergies, as two of my friends have shellfish allergies and one is also celiac. We began the evening with some cocktails and mocktails which were all delicious, and then leapt right into the menu items we ordered. Some of my favorite bites of the night came at the beginning: the beef tartare was so balanced and delicious, and the shrimp aguachile was punchy yet light. Would definitely reorder both those dishes! The hot appetizers came up next: my favorite of the bunch was the cabbage, which was super flavorful from the tofu caesar sauce and had just the right amount of char, but the shishitos and carrots were also excellent. All the mains and sides we ordered were amazing; the brisket was a bit dry for me but the peanut sauce it came in was phenomenal. And the green curry went so well with the aromatic coconut rice! I didn't try the potatoes but my friends loved them a lot. Then our server brought out three cute little scoops of sorbet for the birthday trio. Perfect palate cleanser, and not wanting to leave our fourth companion out, Chef Henry sent her a complementary sorbet as well :) Such a nice touch. By this point we were all super stuffed but the desserts on the menu looked too tasty, so we also added on the passionfruit panna cotta with coconut tapioca and the goat cheesecake with lychee ginger sorbet. Our gluten free friend really enjoyed the vanilla bean ice cream, but the rest of us loved both the other desserts we got. Totally worth it! Since the menu is so seasonal and changes frequently, I would love to come back the next time I'm in the city and try more things. In the meantime, I'll keep dreaming about this meal :) Thanks for a phenomenal birthday dinner, JUN!

I didn't post two pictures because they were blurry. Lamb and red fish. They both were different and completely outstanding. The pictures are everything else ate. Each course is must eat!!! My friend was smiling the entire night!!!

I've been wanting to try Jun for quite some time now, and finally got the chance to. Jun serves New Asian-American dishes, and although many of their dishes were innovative, it just didn't taste as good as it looked. Gulf Shrimp 4/5 If there's anything you should order, it's this. They're known for it, and it's pretty good. Rice Cake 1/5 I love korean rice cakes, and although what they did here was creative, the yellow bean bechamel doesn't go with the rice cake at all. Texture is great, flavor profile is odd. Asian fusion gone wrong. Beef Tartare 5/5 Personally, I love beef tartare anywhere and I had no complaints about this one. I would get this again. Fried Chicken 2/5 The fried chicken wasn't the worst, but it definitely wasn't the best. If you're paying $24 for 2 pieces of chicken, you think you'd be blown away. I'm shocked that their fried chicken is popular. I was upset about the chicken actually. I wouldn't recommend this. Brisket 3/5 The brisket was amazing! Initially, the peanut curry tasted good, but the more you ate it with the brisket, you just got tired of it. The rose colored glasses come off, and you realize that it's just mediocre. Goat Cheesecake 4/5 Flavor profile was good, and I like that there was a variety of textures in this dessert. Made it fun to eat. Never had goat cheesecake before, so it was quite the experience! Scarlet Letter 5/5 I honestly think their drinks are better than the food. If I were to come back, it would definitely be for the their cocktail menu. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be returning. I can justify 2 pieces of average chicken for $24 (Based on flavor, I would rather go to a local korean fried chicken place or Popeyes). There wasn't a single dish that I would come back for. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I do like the ambience of the place and it would make a great date or even drinks with the girls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was very good, our server was very patient with us and gave us many recommendations.

I really would give Jun a 3.5 over a 4 but rounding up because the flavors were pretty decent. We have been wanting to try Jun for a while but had gotten mixed reviews from friends about it when it first opened. After giving it some time to fix through opening kinks, we finally made the time to check Jun out. We opted for the tasting menu since there were a couple dishes that were not part of the à la carte menu that sounded interesting. The night started off well with some good drinks, then had hiccups during the first few dishes due to a strange delay in pacing that ended up getting better as the evening went by. It took so long between the first couple dishes that we started keeping a log of how long it truly took for each dish to come out. ie 15 min from drinks to first dish, 23 min to the second dish, another 15 min until the third... eventually the dishes started coming out a little faster but man it was noticeably long. A friend got the wine pairing and this was another eyebrow raising part of the evening. This is probably the food snob in me talking but the server clearly knew next to nothing about the menu and the drinks might as well have been served by a robot. Literally just a "here's your next wine" with zero declaration of at least what kind of wine it was. I'm not asking for a report of tasting notes with an extensive vineyard history but dang, for the price you're paying there should be at least a semblance of a description with the delivery. The flavors of the dishes themselves were good but I don't think I'll be coming back. Too much good food in Houston to justify returning w the service and pacing issues. Was really hoping they would have ironed out these kinks by now.

Jun is a fine dining restaurant but many of the entrées require eating with your hands, so they provide wet towels with each of those dishes. The ambiance is very romantic and the service was very professional and attentive. We started strong with the beef tartare which was flavorful and delicious followed by mussels in a rich, savory red curry broth (though a little too salty). We asked for extra bread to soak up the sauce and were brought two very large baguettes for $4 which was way more bread than the small amount of broth left. From there, the meal unfortunately went downhill. The fried chicken arrived bone-in, which made it feel more casual than fine dining (almost like being at Popeyes). The rice cakes turned out to be the Korean tteokbokki style rather than the Chinese kind I had expected, and since I'm not a fan of tteokbokki, I did not enjoy this dish. The ribs also came bone-in, requiring yet another round of finger eating. The carrots were good, but the bed of cheese they sat on was very peculiar. We ended up skipping dessert, even though it was my birthday, because we didn't want more disappointment. For us, there was simply too much of eating with our hands and too many misses in execution for a fine dining establishment. While the dishes were creative, it didn't quite deliver the experience we were hoping for. Sadly, I don't think we'd return.

The thing that made this hotdog stand out was the cheese sauce. The cheese sauce was delicious and I could probably have just eaten that alone. One thing though, the hotdogs were a bit on the smaller size, you probably would have to order something else or a second hotdog if you were hungry. Would come back again just for this hotdog! There are books abound, along the walls, in the bathroom, everywhere. I had a glass of Experience, a Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. It was a good pour, not too little or too much and the taste was deep, well balanced and smooth. Since the event took place around dinner time I also had a Fig and Speck flatbread. The fig, prosciutto and other toppings complimented each other well. The flatbread dough itself was ok but could've benefited from a little more flavor such as some garlic, butter and herbs. I also would've liked it a bit thinner so I could taste less of the bread and more of those delicious toppings. Don't get me wrong it was good and I ate all of it but these are small suggestions I'd recommend to bring it to perfection. I could see parking and seating being tricky. I was fortunate to snag a parking spot on the side of the building near the auto place and once inside I found a seat at a table with a lovely couple, another couple joined us soon after. Many of the guests who arrived later stood at first and then halfway through the event, made their way to the floor where they sat cross legged. All in all, The Library was a nice establishment and although a little out of my way, I'd return for another event or if I were in the area again.

When my friend made the reservation, she received an email encouraging customers to visit the tasting room before or after dinner. We showed up an hour early to visit the tasting room, however the host had no idea what we were talking about. Turns out they weren't doing tastings. Luckily, we didn't have to wait to be seated. We initially had a table that was not near a heat lamp, however an employee came over and let us know that we could switch to a table near the heat lamp which was appreciated because it was chilly. Our server was Laura. She was nice and funny. They had $25 flight specials. I went with the Sayanara Flight which had white wines. I really enjoyed them and they weren't too sweet. My friend had an NA wine which she enjoyed. We ordered the Truffle Fries and Meatballs. Both dishes were tasty. I enjoyed the aioli that came with the fries. They had discounted wines for purchase. Not all bottles were 50% off, however the gentleman that we spoke to went ahead and gave me a 50% discount on both the rosé and pinot grigio that I purchased which was so appreciated! It seems like there are quite a few businesses around town that are closing. I'm sad to see Mutiny go, but I'm glad my friend and I got to dine in on their final night.

"Closing time, you don't have to go home But you can't stay…read morehere." - Semisonic I have lived in the loop for 5 years now, and I'm sad to say that I finally tried Mutiny on their last day. I often pass by it going through a shortcut to I-45 and sometimes going home around the area. It's literally a 5-minute drive. I booked reservations Friday since I saw they opened up the 31st on Resy. It wasn't earlier in the week, but I knew it was the last day, and my friend and I really wanted to try. I'm glad we made reservations because they were at capacity (150 person capacity) and weren't taking any walk ins. We got there early cause Resy suggested checking out the Tasting Room before or after the reservation time. We got there about an hour earlier, and the host said he didn't know anything about that except that the Tasting Room area was used for events. Interesting. We were seated earlier on the patio on this freezing evening. At first, we were at a table that didn't have a heat lamp, but when one freed up, they were so nice to suggest that we move closer to the heat lamp since they saw us shivering. Lol. We were thankful for that. I wore fleece lined jeans and brought gloves and a beanie anyway having been in the below freezing winter in London. Laura was our server and was kind and funny. So was this other guy who checked in every now and then. He made light of their last day situation. The dining area is so beautiful inside. I love the limestone-looking interior and chandeliers. Reminds me of Fredericksburg or something. They had many large groups and a few small groups of friends or couples dining on this last day. Way to go out with a bang. A lot of the wines were selling out or already sold out around 7-8 pm. We tried the truffle fries and Sicilian meatballs with focaccia bread. I like the thick cut of the fries and the black garlic aioli. It reminded me of yuca fries. The Sicilian meatballs were a bit small, peppery and salty. I wish the marinara was a little more tart. The focaccia helped cut through the saltiness. I had 2 glasses of the NA Sauvignon blanc which was light and a little tart. They ran out of the NA red blend. My friend ordered Sayonara, one of their farewell flights which were aptly named for "goodbye". It was a great night on the patio but chilly. My friend purchased a rosé and a Pinot Grigio as part of their Last Sail wines. Actually, the Pinot Grigio wasn't part of the sale, and he was going to take off 20%, but he also made it 50% off. So nice!! I'm glad we got to try them on their last day. Bon voyage, Mutiny.

Colton behind the bar made the experience, he's extremely knowledgeable and fun to talk to; walking us through a thoughtful tasting of wines we'd never even heard of and helping us purchase a bottle from Mexico we never would've picked without his guidance. I can't recommend enough for wine enthusiasts or anyone looking for a laid-back date night, thanks for a great time!

It's a nice lowkey neighborhood spot with a bar and outdoor seating as well. The ambiance was chill and casual which I am all for. They are pet friendly as I got to see some fur babies come in which is always nice. We started with some glasses of Cabernet and told our waiter we were celebrating my birthday. The food didn't take long to come out and was so darn good. It was probably one of the best steak nights I've had in a while. We had the ribeyes, mash potato, mac and cheese, green beans, and French fries. The steak was seasoned perfectly and grilled to the perfect temperature to my liking. We are still talking about it, I can't wait to come back and try their chimichurri sauce. We ended with the strawberry and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cheese cake. They weren't too sweet and just the right amount of richness. If they aren't on your list for steak night I definitely recommend!

Our server was checking in on us very frequently and she explained the menu to us when we told her we hadn't been before. The manager on duty also had stopped by and introduced herself. They told us up front that tapas would be able to be out quickly with only up to a 10 minute wait but that larger plates could be up to a 45 minute wait. We ordered several tapas and one large plate half order. I don't know much about wine, personally, but the drinks we did get were amazing. The restaurant itself was very pretty as well, lots of natural lighting and then low lighting as the sun went down. The music was low and we were able to hear each other well, apart from one group across the room that would get rowdy but I can't blame them for having a good time. Our food was all delicious and I forgot to take pics of some of them because we devoured them so quickly. Not pictured, we ordered the grilled asparagus and focaccia. I highly recommend all of what we ordered.
