It was great…read more I read in my preview that the line to the counter is always there...but it moves quickly...and it is and does. I had to visit Blues City as I heard they have great Po Boys...and they do. I am used to having oysters or shrimp on a Po Boy. Not here. They are basically served with many versions of meat. I had the Benton Park Po Boy and it was incredible. The sandwich has ham, roast beef, turkey, provel, and is dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, pepperoncini, sweet red pepper sauce on french bread. My wife, being vegetarian had the Panino Fresco. It included mozzarella, provolone, dressed with homemade olive salad, tomato, onion & Italian vinegar oil on an Italian roll. This was the first time in 26 years that she finished the entire sandwich. I had a bite of hers, and it is easy to see why she she finished it. So good. I even bought a memorable t-shirt as I loved Blues City Deli. The female counter person was so friendly. She even wrote down three other restaurants to try while we were visiting St Louis. Blues City Deli is a can't miss place and if we are back in St. Louis...we will be back.

Since this place is such a staple, we figured we had to give it a try. The place was absolutely packed, which clearly shows it's a local favorite. Even with how busy they were, our pickup order was ready on time -- actually before the scheduled pickup since I arrived about five minutes early. The atmosphere definitely had that classic local sandwich shack vibe and seemed like it would make a great casual lunch spot for almost any occasion. Unfortunately, the food itself just didn't live up to the reputation for us. We ordered the hot salami sandwiches, which they're known for, but they were extremely greasy and the only flavors that really stood out were mustard and grease. We expected a lot more flavor and balance considering it's their specialty item. We also placed a large luncheon order of 10 sandwiches. Everyone was satisfied overall and the food was decent enough, but nothing really stood out or made us excited to come back. We personally prefer Adriana's for both flavor and overall quality. One of the biggest disappointments was that none of the sandwiches had cheese on them, even though we paid an extra $2 per sandwich for the garlic cheese bread upgrade. That was frustrating considering the additional charge. Honestly, I'm guessing we may have just caught them on an off day because it's obvious this spot has a loyal following. We still appreciate supporting local STL businesses and can understand why so many people love it -- it just wasn't quite the experience we were expecting.

The ingredients seemed good but my chicken thigh was cheap, the chicken was burned, the sauce was too salty, and the sandwich was half heartedly put together. The fries and sauce were very good -- and obviously required the least effort. That's what gives me hope. The restaurant itself has sticky floors (which I've tried to avoid after I turned 30) and is a bit of a mess. There's a towel sitting under the big jug of water. It's just not clean or easy to be in. I saw the pics when you guys were a food truck. I know you were making incredible stuff. The gal at the front was friendly enough, but all in all this was a bull*hit experience considering the potential. The restaurants that are consistently good have the owners/head chef watching, caring, and making sure their workers deliver the experience that was intended. I have no doubt if someone who really cared showed up this place would be all I was hoping.

They've renovated the space recently, and it looks fantastic, clean, modern, and way more welcoming than before. The ordering counter is right at the entrance, and once you're ready, the staff keeps things moving quickly. The menu has also gotten an upgrade with a shiny new digital display, and I'm pretty sure there are some new items on there (love to see it!). Even with the new options, I'm loyal to my go to, the turkey sandwich, because it simply never misses. After they toast the sandwich, it's topping time. I always stick with my favorites, lettuce, olives, and honey mustard, simple but perfect. Once your sandwich is finished, don't forget to grab chips (and maybe a cookie...no judgment) plus a drink cup before paying and heading to the dining area. Speaking of drinks: I cannot resist their strawberry lemonade. Not only did I have one cup, I had two. It's that good. Overall, Pickleman's remains a reliable, tasty, and quick lunch stop, especially with the refreshed space and smoother ordering process. I'll definitely be back!
