Brunch places are just one of my favorite, so I drove myself to HP just for chilaquiles. It was a nice surprise to find a vegetarian and hipster restaurant in HP. They had a lot of unique items on the menu, I say unique because the menu is one of a kind. I overheard the cashier explaining that some items are made with cashew milk and mostly everything has veggies. My chilaquiles were good. I liked the orange and green drizzled sauce. One tasted a bit spicy and one like avocado. The tortilla had the right crunch and the sauce they use to make the actual chilaquiles was really good. Why I didn't give a 5? It was good but they add beans that you can't eat without mixing it with the red cabbage, just my meal I paid $23! And the juice was way too small for $4. I don't expect a jar of juice but the cup was like a whiskey cup. They also don't carry lemonade and each egg you add is $2. I think chilaquiles especially for brunch should be included. You serve your own water, grab your own utensils and napkins. Cute place and I would definitely be back but this time not big a drink and try a lunch item to avoid the extra charge of eggs. My lovely cousin hooked me on this place! All I can say is for vegan food this place is the SHI---T!!! I had the Mikey's Chilaquiles $12 with tofu scramble for +$4 more and it was so filling, I even had leftovers and I never usually leave any food left on the plate ALSO ORDERED MORE TAKEOUT lol!! It's super clean and fresh. It wasn't bland or mushy, or super artificial tasting. My only issue was the price but I get it. Food ain't cheap anymore. That is my only reason why u gave 4 stars. Hands down, one of the best brunch places I've ever been to. :') Every plate I've tried had strong, accented flavors. Nothing was ever bland, including the tofu scramble (which, in my opinion, is very hard to get right). The cilantro chutney on top of the glory bowl and moro's cakes is enough to keep me coming back! Always a go-to of mine for lunch. Food leaves you feeling satisfied without ever causing you to feel groggy or overly full! Even the pancake special which was super filling left me feeling so great. This is obviously any vegetarian or vegan's dream spot, but even after I decided to reintegrate meat into my diet, kitchen mouse ALWAYS hits the spot. They serve veg friendly food without ever feeling like you're missing something! Their meat substitutes are great. Personal favorites: Pancake special which comes with two eggs or tofu scramble, two pieces of mushroom sausage or tempeh bacon (or one of each if you ask nicely!!), and two gluten free pancakes with coconut flakes and fresh berries Chilaquiles: Soooo tasty. One day my friend and I were looking for a place to have breakfast at. She's Vegan, so we didn't have too many options. We were on yelp for like 30min looking at places and none one them opened until after 10:00. That was too late for us. We were hungry now!!! So, we looked and looked and finally came cross this place called Kitchen Mouse in Highland Park. Ok. We were in Eagle Rock, so not too far. They had no parking, but plenty of meter parking. As we walked inside, we were greeted by a friendly cashier. We had no idea what to order so my friend got the snickerdoodle pancakes, and I got the Chilaquiles. We both decided to get different things so we can share each other's food. Both of those options were great! Chilaquiles aren't your typical Mexico style, but they were Amazing considering EVERYTHING was vegan. Snickerdoodle pancake was great too! I came here with a couple of my friends. We chose this place because they have vegan options, so that there's something for me to eat :) One of my friends ordered the Avocado TLT and the other the Morning Glory Bowl. They enjoyed their food and the portions were perfect for them. I ordered sides because I already ate, side of tofu scramble and the tempeh bacon. I'm not a fan of tempeh but I understand it tastes different everywhere. The tempeh was a little too salty for me so I can to eat an extra mouth full of tofu scramble to hide the saltiness. Overall, great service and the restaurant had lots of seating for large and small groups. I do want to come by again and try their other dishes. read more

It was a beautiful Sunday, it really felt like summer had arrived. My friends and I decided to do some vintage shopping in highland park and had to fuel up beforehand and decided to check out Kitchen Mouse. Incredible! Delightful! I got the Morning Glory Bowl and wow it was light and satisfying and great. It made me feel like I could conquer my day. They forgot to bring my friend her rice and beans and they brought cookies to say sorry and it was precious. We met a very cute dog who howled like the sirens when they drove by. I hate it when I avoid a particular spot because it's "too trendy", and then I end up checking it out (sometimes YEARS later) and it's so awesome that I kick myself for being so snobby. Kitchen Mouse is that spot, always spilling over with hungry, health-conscious NELA-ites. The line is long but if you're lucky it'll move fast (read: avoid peak times). I tried the Psychedelic Daalipop which is a delightful blend of daal, cucumber mint salad, cilantro chutney, mushrooms, roasted cauliflower and rice. It's like... everything I want to eat. And healthy! And not even that expensive! It takes a minute to get your food (because they're making everything from scratch), and it's truly worth the wait. The food was great! I have celiac disease and I've been hearing about the gluten free menu here recently. It was a bit of a drive from west la, but it was a cool neighborhood with plenty of parking. There is a bakery and a diner around the corner. The waitstaff were very knowledgeable and open to questions. I also went to the bakery where they were beyond nice. Baked goods were also very good. I gave it four stars because of the prices. I know gluten free and organic is more expensive. We are a family of four with two young children. We ordered 4 entrees and two orange juices and out total was $107. Be prepared for a hefty price tag. Although it was expensive, we enjoyed the food and the peaceful environment. Hey, I'm leaving this two star review due to the fact of the service I usually always get the vegan Chilaquiles and instead of the not spicy at all enchilada sauce I substitute it for the salsa Roja I have spent at least a couple thousand dollars at this establishment and when I called today and asked for my usual, if I could sub the chili, Quiles enchilada sauce, or the salsa Roja They told me that new management said they are not going to do that for me. So I then said if they can just give me dry chips and the salsa on the side and I can toss it myself since they don't want to do it. When I came to get my food I noticed a $2.50 charge extra on top of the already $20 Chilaquiles. it's unfortunate that a place with OK food decided to charge me around $25 for a plate of dry chips salsa on the side, some beans and some vegan egg. As a long time resident of highland park where I was born and raised I cannot help, but be so disappointed about how management at this establishment is treating people. How are you going to charge someone extra for them to make and toss their own food and then have the nerve to say they are not going to do it anymore after I have spent thousands of dollars at this place. The only reason this is two stars, and not one star is due to the fact that the food is all right. From the first time I went there until now things have drastically changed. In the Chilla Quiles I order today there was only nine chips, a half scoop of black beans, the small ramekin of salsa Roja for $2.50 and maybe like a pinch of veggies on top. I went to this place in hopes to order their Moro cakes which I've had before. I was so excited to order these cakes I went a little too early and decided to wait for the kitchen to open. Finally the time came to order the Moro cakes and when I got to the register, the cashier informed me they did not have that item available. I figured I would just get a morning glory and some mini corn breads but once again they did not have the mini corn breads. I then asked for some vegan cookies but they were also out of those :/ I was just very disappointed that they really didn't have a lot of items available but I did understand due to COVID. They're expanding all the time... which made me happy for them at first. But it clearly comes at great expense to their customers. This is a mid-sized, hipster restaurant in Highland park that has a great food; and it comes with a good amount of vegan/vegetarian options! Came here around 10:30 AM on a Thursday with a friend to eat a quick lunch. There was no wait-time, but a line quickly formed around 11 AM. Parking is ok; there is metered street parking all around the block. The Avocado TLT is a take on the BLT, but instead of bacon, uses Tempeh (an Indonesian soybean cake). It is featured as an open-faced sandwich with a vibrant salad on the side. I thought this was absolutely delicious! The tempeh is smoked, so it fairly resembles bbq (as a replacement for bacon). They give you loads of avocado to accompany it to give it some healthy fats. There's dijon mustard between the tempeh and the toast, which did well to balance out the intense smokiness and the fattiness of the avocados. The flax toast was great in supporting the whole dish. The salad was crisp and fresh; and the dressing was perfect. The use of sunflower brittle is a smart choice for the texture. My friend didn't really like the tempeh, so if you're same, your mileage may vary. I loved it though, and would order it again! My friend got the Jo's Breakfast Sandwich. It's a double layered sandwich with 2 millet toasts and 2 fried eggs. You would think this is an average, overloaded sandwich, but it really surprises you with the flavor. The eggs are perfectly cooked, so the yolks are still juicy. The greens and the toast at the bottom soak up the yolks. The lemon in the dressing is where the dish really shines. They got the acidity to balance out the fats of the egg, so the dish turns from being bloated from two fried eggs to having a pleasantly filling meal. Service here is great. There's a good amount of seating; it doesn't look like a place for people to work/study, but some people were relaxing with a book. The ambiance is peaceful. read more

Highland Park is one of those slick little neighborhoods on the come up that I keep hearing about more and more. Kitchen Mouse is a perfect example of what makes hoods like this so great: a unique menu and location with character, run by enthusiastic people looking to bring love to their neighbors. I kind of stumbled onto Kitchen Mouse, I was in the area and searched "vegan" on my Yelp app (of course) and this place popped up. Thirty seconds of cruising the menu let me know I was in for a treat and after my visit I can say I was definitely not disappointed. My girl and I knocked out two of their open face sandwiches: Avocado TLT: maple tempeh, cherry tomato, dijon aioli, and herbs Tempeh Reuben: sauerkraut, chipotle aioli, cashew cream, and seared tempeh Both came with little side salads, both were perfectly tasty. Check my photos, making my mouth water again. We also snagged a side of their house made mushroom and brown rice "sausage" patties and they were so savory, an awesome treat. I spoke with a woman working there, maybe a manager or something I don't know, and she was so all about their food it got me jazzed just to be there. What a great little spot for vegans, meat eaters, and everyone in between. It was packed on a Saturday brunch time, so prepare thyself. The wait is worth it though. I've had this place bookmarked for a long while and I finally had the opportunity to visit Kitchen Mouse twice within a month from each other. Cute cafe in Highland Park. Both times I went for brunch and it had quite a crowd. On that first visit, I was worried that we'd have to compete for seating. But after we ordered at the counter, the staff sorta moderated which customers were waiting for tables and directed us (and other customers) to tables as they became available. On my second visit, there were a few tables open so we just sat ourselves. The menu is small but everything sounds delicious! Also, almost everything on the menu is vegan. There are a few egg dishes which are obviously not vegan but other than that, no hidden ingredients that require a bunch of questions. Between my two visits, I've had the opportunity to taste the following: MOROS CAKES - I love a plate with a lot of color! This had a vibrant purple from the serrano slaw with red cabbage, a bright green from the cilantro chutney, and a splash of orange from the smoky chipotle cream. Came here for breakfast with my sister, brother, and nephews. This is a casual restaurant where you go to the counter, eat, and then they give you a number, you find a table, then they bring you your food. I had the eggs benedict and it was absolutely delicious. Instead of a bread, they had a jackfruit patty. The food was filling and very flavorful. There is a small corner of the restaurant that is like a small play area with toys and bean bags for the children. This was a life saver for us as we were able to enjoy our meal and have good conversation as the kids played. The décor and aesthetic is very pleasing. I will return. read more

Took myself out to breakfast on a Sunday here and the decor was to die for. I ordered the special specifically because the photos on yelp and asked what they would suggest to drink. Their orange/grapefruit combo drink was suggested and it did not disappoint. While waiting for my food, I noticed they were playing salsa music at 8:30am, this confirmed that I have found place. Minus the children's corner in the back but back to the food. The pancakes were out of this world, the egg tofu was perfect and I was surprised at how tasty the mushroom sausage was. Love that I found a gluten free friendly spot in my area. My first time ordering for pick up. The girl who helped me was nice. My order was ready in a timely manner. I decided to get the Falafel wrap-gluten free. I was a little hesitant when I can't see my food and for good reason. When I got my food I noticed a white powdery residue on my wrap which I was concerned about. But I later called and they said that's how GF looks so I'm trusting them. The wrap was delicious in flavor and ingredients but the flour dusted on top makes it really messy to eat and not really appealing. I also got the walnut flour brownie which was soo yummy and moist. I'll def go back to try other things but it's hard to tell what is or isn't gluten free based on the Online menu so I rather wait till they open for dine in so get a better experience. read more

I never though I would find myself thinking a restaurant could be TOO hipster for me, but Kitchen Mouse changed that. I have had it bookmarked for quite a while and finally tried it today for breakfast. First off, they don't really have a big sign out front so I had to circle around twice before I realized where it was. The parking is on the street and I was lucky enough to find a spot close by. The restaurant is fairly big and you order at the register and then seat yourself. THeir breakfast menu is pretty limited. I ordered the huevos rancheros and my girlfriend ordered the breakfast sandwich. We also both got vanilla lattes. Our lattes came out shortly after we sat down. They use Stumptown coffee which I love and my latte was delicious. Our food came out quickly and was pretty good. The huevos rancheros were not your typical ones. I didn't like the insane amount of cabbage and green onions that were stacked on top of the eggs and tortillas. The meal overall was flavorful and filled me up though. My girlfriend's breakfast sandwich was quite small and was served inside out in a way, but she said that she enjoyed it. I don't think I would return. read more
