Reading the menu for this place is like a greatest-hits list of "things I want to eat", so when we got to Kitchen Mouse, I was already excited. The line was out the door, but moved at a respectable pace. You have to order at the counter, then find a table, but despite the line there were plenty of open tables. They definitely do a good job at pacing and keeping things moving. We ordered the chilaquiles and 'crab' cakes Benedict. The Benedict is made with jack fruit and it is amazing! I seriously couldn't have been happier with that dish. The chilaquiles had great flavor, not a fully authentic take on the dish, but that's not a bad thing at all. Probably could have skipped the cheese sauce, because that didn't add much to the dish. I will definitely be back - I absolutely need to try the Tempeh Reuben. read more

I really like the vibe and ambiance of this cool artistic little restaurant. I really wanted to give it a five star review! I don't know if they were just off on the afternoon I came in for brunch, but the salad I got was not fresh and there were several pieces of the lettuces that were severly wilted and had turned to that dark slime-like consistency that occurs when greens are moist and not fresh. I ordered the pancakes, a latte and a side of mixed greens. The latte and pancakes were good and I appreciated that they used real maple syrup. My only complaint is the salad was not fresh and several of the greens started to turn, as I mentioned. For me, it's really important that a restaurant provide really fresh salad greens. Hopefully they just had a bad batch that day? I'll probably try this Cafe one more time and see if the salad is fresh next time. read more

If you'd asked me to guess I would have assumed that Homestate had the best breakfast tacos in highland park, but hooooolyshit the breakfast tacos at kitchen mouse give them a run for their money. It's truly a flavor and textural masterpiece. A corn tortilla with just the right amount of chew, eggs so fluffy a french chef must have made them, a tangy cabbage slaw for crunch, and then the surprise of what is (I believe) a dollop of mashed potatoes to add to the creaminess?! Husband and I stumbled upon this hidden gem in Highland Park during Labor Day weekend and was very satisfied! The line out the door had us both undecided (on wait time) and intrigued!! We figured if there were that many people in line, we had to try it out. And to our surprise the line actually moved quick. However, the only reason I didn't rate this place a perfect 5 stars is because we probably waited a good 30-45mins for our food. BUT I do have to say that the food was worth the wait. I had the Vegan Tofu Breakfast Tacos and my husband had the Chilaquiles!! They were both good but I would say the Chilaquiles are a MUST! They had the perfect balance of crunchy and soft and their sauce was so delicious we asked for an extra side of it. The decor in this place is such a cute added bonus. So sweet and welcoming. Was hanging with my vegan sister and needed a good spot to have brunch at after a short hike.... turned to my trusty yelp app for some direction. Highland Park has drastically changed in the last few years from all the gentrification but along with that comes unique vegan spots like Kitchen Mouse. Upon entry we were greeted with a smile... which is always nice. But the food is what really counts, and this was spot on! We tried some iced teas, the pancakes, chilaquiles and the sandwich.... all were honestly AMAZING! The chilaquiles with the added tofu scramble had amazing flavor and did not taste like a vegan dish ... and the sandwich was seriously one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had in a while. The Kitchen Mouse opened around the same time we bought our first house. We were amazed and thrilled to find a breakfast place that is "vegan friendly"--because that's the way we eat, and we've been regulars ever since. The food is always wonderful, whether it's complicated like the English Breakfast or comforting and simple like the Buffalo Bowl, and my kids go crazy for their donuts on weekends. But most importantly, we were welcomed in at this restaurant and to say it "made" our new neighborhood feel like a community is an understatement. We've made many of our friends here. Our kids have a play area in the back to meet new friends and blow off steam. When the restaurant opened Erica was pregnant and we talked about being new parents together--now our kids are less new but we still do birthdays and hang out. Amber, one if their amazing staff, is our very favorite babysitter. This place made huge LA feel like the small, loving town I grew up in and to say it's a special, delicious place doesn't even begin to cut it. read more

Located in a bit of a strange area of town - this restaurant with teal patio furniture and hipster people flanking the window seats. With no name outside that was visible, it felt like you were transported to a bohemian cafe some where in the tropics. It was a order at the counter style place and the restaurant is entirely gluten free and vegan with the exception of eggs and that's it. No dairy and no gluten. My kind of place. We ordered their famous pancakes and the black bean rice cakes. Both was extremely delicious and flavored to perfection. The black bean rice cakes called moros (sp) had a spicy chipotle cream but the coleslaw and he pesto that it comes with were just not good. Coleslaw was too tangy and dry and he pesto like sauce on the bottom was a tad bit on the bitter side. I added an egg to my dish and it was the perfect savory balance to the sweet pancakes. The buckwheat coconut pancakes were light and airy despite it being gluten free and had a wonderful sweet taste. Even after eating three pancakes, you don't feel heavy or sluggish but rather full and content. They had an assortment of hot sauces and different drinks and chai lattes all vegan and gluten free. read more

Sometimes I like to pretend that I'm a vegan and that I'm overly-conscious about what I put into my body, so I'm grateful for places like Kitchen Mouse that offer me faux-meat options and dishes so packed with delicious veggies that you almost forget that you're actually carnivorous. The place itself is tiny and seats are hard to come by if you're coming during a busy time/day, but the decor is seriously adorable. I had it bookmarked for ages and finally visited one early Sunday morning after a hike to the Wisdom Tree in Griffith Park. Luckily my friend and I arrived a little before 10:30 and narrowly missed the long line that formed right after we were seated. I definitely recommend arriving early if you're coming in on a weekend. The interior is bright with wide windows, high ceilings, and a mishmash of chairs and tables in the dining area. It felt like I had stepped into someone's living room. They use wooden tables and cabinets to hold utensils and other food items. The chalkboard menu adds to the vibe, creating an overall casual and fun atmosphere. The menu promises a variety of enticing, healthy, and vegetarian options - which for me, is still a rare find. The best part, of course, is when the description actually delivers and the food tastes as appetizing as it sounds. Their moros cakes were absolutely delicious! I had never before seen moros cakes on a menu and I knew I had to try them. They were spicy, creamy, crunchy, with a soft, warm interior. Paired with great company and a hot cup of coffee, and it all came together to make for a lovely Sunday morning. I will definitely return soon to try out some of their other notable items, and recommend Kitchen Mouse for anyone looking for a good place to take a vegetarian (or really anyone who enjoys delicious food) to breakfast or brunch! read more

This was the first time that I have tried vegan style brunch and it was definitely a mixed experiences on some of the entrees. It's a very modern and hipsterish cafe that had various cafe tables with little flowers in the middle; every girls ideal decor. Parking wasn't that bad as there is ample street parking located throughout the area. When I walked through the door, it was bustlng with constumers, the tables were full, and the line to order food kept getting longer by the minute. The process is pretty simple, you order what you want in the front, and you get a number, and the food is brought to you. They had an extensive breakfast menu that features food that any vegetarian and gluten-free lovers are bound to enjoy. To start off the day, we decided to go with the Buffalo Bowl, Moros Cakes, and pancakes made with oat, buckwheat & corn vegan. There was also some mini donuts and cookies in the front, so we also ordered some of their cookies and donuts to try out. While waiting for our food, we tried them, and the cookies definitely tasted really good, but the donuts were a little on the sweet side. After a while, our entrees finally arrived, and they looked really tasty and fresh. Maybe because I'm not used to vegetarian food, but a majority of the entrees aside from the pancakes seemed to be lacking. Although the Buffalo Bowl and Moros Cakes were tasteful and fantastic in their own way; the entrees seemed like things I can make if I went to Trader Joes. The total cost of the meal with drinks and some donuts/cookies was close to $50 and that was pretty high for the type of food we got. The only thing that I truly enjoyed and would recomend to anyone would be the pancakes. They were fanatasic, light, fluffy, and truly distinct as I have never had anything like it anywhere else before. Even when I left, the only thing that was on my mind was just how amazing the pancakes here were. I really did enjoy this place, but maybe I struck out on some of the entrees today aside from the pancakes. As I was leaving the line only got longer and the noise level increased a lot more. I will probably come back in the future as the pancakes were just so so good, and hopefully this time I'll have a better idea of what to order! read more

Maybe I went during an off day, but the first thing I've noticed when I walked in were all the hipsters. Dreadlocks, flannels, glasses, beanies, skinny jeans... EVERYWHERE. It was hipster galore! I got their vegan buffalo bowl (~$8) with a side of veggie sausage (+$4) . The buffalo bowl is pretty simple and it seems very healthy. The buffalo bowl includes: rice, spinach, yam, beans, and some sauce. I really enjoyed this dish because it was filling and the food did not seem to be so processed. It really felt like a hearty balanced meal. The sausage is nothing like those Morning Star products, nor does it taste or look like anything close to a real sausage. It seemed to be a bunch of veggies and black beans going through a food processor packed into a tight patty. My friend got their vegan coconut pancake. The whip cream is apparently made out of coconut milk and it was pretty good... but also very sweet. I came during Sunday brunch and without any surprise, it was pretty crowded, but wasn't packed. Kitchen Mouse is pretty small and the tables are very close to one another.. but it wasn't difficult to find a spot. Theres a serve yourself room temperature water station on the side. Constructive criticism: when I fist came here years ago I fell in love with the chilaquiles. I feel like over the years it's changed and isn't as good as I remember. Sometimes there's hardly any chips and this last time the chips were pretty dry (hardly any red sauce) The chips should be covered in red sauce. Not smothered but just enough like before. It was my boyfriend's birthday, so we wanted to go on a drive. He found this place on google as it was on our way out of town. So happy we stopped by! Felt right at home just walking in. Sad to say, but many vegan/ vegetarian places just don't feel that way. We ordered* the Chilaquiles dish, Homemade Pancakes and a cinnamon bagel. I mentioned that it was his Birthday and they gave him a chocolate cupcake with a candle, so sweet and unexpected! We also ordered the fresh squeezed Orange juice and it was delicious! Delicious Breakfast (5 stars) Came here one Monday morning on a fluke. Saw the green that was so inviting and we decided to go inside. It was light and airy, and so fresh. The menu was exhaustingly long, but they all looked delicious. There was savory, and sweet, and they all looked interesting. We opted for the chilaquiles and avocado TLT with each a fried egg. We got coffee and found a table in the main dining room. It was a short little wait, and it was nice to see other people coming in. Interesting crowd, a group of people that would not have come in back in 2000 when we moved to the area. Our dishes arrived and I put some of the sauces. It was delicious. The salad was nice and fresh, and the roasted sesame seeds tasted really deep, and the egg with the avocado and toast and patty was surprisingly delicious. the chilaquiles was delicious too. Great menu! Lots of seating indoors and I love that the place is not stuffed with tables. You can sit comfortable and eat your delicious meal! Staff was very friendly and efficient with the crowd. All around a great dining experience. I had a chai ($4.50), chilaquiles ($10 plus $2.50 for added scrambled eggs), a fonut ($2.50) and a couple of cookies ($1 each). All were good but I did spend $24 on brunch! EEK! Definitely a great place so I will be back - but will prob skip the desserts as they are priced high for how tiny they are - that being said, it looked like everyone was buying a couple so they clearly are fine charging that much. We found metered street parking easily but it was a rainy day so... I don't know if that's normal. Line in the front, order at the cash register, pay, and they'll give you a number to bring back to your table (seat yourself). They'll bring the food out to you.
