Eating at Kitchen Mouse was the culinary highlight of my trip to LA. I must note I am a carnivore of the highest order. Tomahawk ribeyes, thick cut pork bacon, and Kurobuta pork chops are the centerpiece of my refrigerator. However as a guest staying in an Airbnb in Highland Park and this place being high on my hosts suggestion list, I had to try it out. The place is super cute and I don't use this word to describe things often. But foam green happens to be one of my favorite colors for various appliances and kitchen accessories, so I was loving the décor. There were so many different places to sit. Large tables of four and six. Nooks by the window facing bustling Figueroa Street. Outdoor seating snuggled against the shop and table and bench seating closer to the street both shaded and enclosed. I ordered the Tikka mushroom tacos with red lentil daal. I cannot imagine Moe's, District Taco, The Taco Stand, Del Taco, or Baja Fresh having a taco even remotely as flavorful as these! The mushrooms were bursting with umami flavor. Moist, meaty, and just all around well seasoned. The soft corn tacos were definitely soft. The corn was corning. The mint chutney was popping! THIS! The soup was a light accompaniment to these scrumptious tacos. So how good was it? I had to come back the next day for lunch! Yes it was that good. Mind you this is Figueroa Street. You can't get more foodie than this in LA. So on this, my second visit, I had the Kale Caesar salad with oyster mushrooms. The Kale was firm and tender at the same time. There was a soft and faint lemony herb dressing on the greens and the croutons held up well on the kale salad. The mushrooms would make my bacon jealous. During both visits, I enjoyed a cinnamon crumb raspberry tart and a glass of lemonade. Both yummy. I don't know when I will be in LA next, but I'm definitely going to be hopping on that Blue line to Highland Park to get me some Kitchen Mouse! read more

Food is great and consistent (a bit overpriced) but they've converted the set up in the back to a kid's shop so if you're eating at any of the tables there (literally where 90% of the tables are) you're subjected to kids screaming their lungs off. The staff looked like they were suffering along with the rest of us. There was a kid with an ear piercing shriek that made 8 of us at tables cover our ears to eat. At what point does management step in instead of having every other customer inconvenienced? THE FOOD: I had the burger bowl - it's a nice salad with a burger and thousand island sauce with avocado. There is a very high up charge for 2 small slices of tempeh bacon. Hubby had pancakes and eggs. One coffee total $55 and a tip. Consider the cost of the meal I expected to be waited on. It's not a good exchange because there's very little service. I do like this place and have come many times. There's always fundraisers outside the door which annoys me because I already donate LOT TO MANY NON PROFIT organizations. I don't want to hassled when on a date with hubby. Parents bring toddlers and I saw one almost run out the door. That's wild. This place is good for kids. It's also a very highly-rated spot, and while I definitely appreciate this place and understand the positive reviews, I didn't necessarily have the same experience here -- the Snickerdoodle Pancake was decent, but a bit on the saltier side. The Buffalo Bowl had a lot of starches, probably not the best choice here. The Gomasio Brown Rice Cakes were the best dish we had, though small. We learned the particular sandwiches we wanted were only served in the coffee shop area, by the time we walked around the corner to the coffee shop side, the owner had already gone through the back and was waiting for us. Every time I eat here I'm reminded of just why they are one of the few fully vegan restaurants still around: the food is somehow a masterful mix of healthy and extremely delicious. Today I tried their brown rice cakes with citrus purple frisee, ginger mint chutney, crispy oyster mishrooms, and grilled shishito peppers. This is my new favorite dish. Really hit the spot and was so nice to eat such a tasty perfectly balanced dish thats honestly on par with excellent fine dining restaurants without the fine dining price. I couldn't help but to buy 2 packs of their delicious homemade cream cheese as well since you really can't find good vegan cream cheese in stores. This one is for you Quintin E. A few weeks ago, I noticed something new had opened up in the space that used to be home to Mr. Holmes Bakeshop. I stopped by the other day to check it out. I was excited when I read the sign that said: Kitchen Mouse - The Bakery. Kitchen Mouse is a cool little Vegetarian/Vegan restaurant that is just around the corner. The owner, Erica Daking, started her catering business out of her home a few years ago and has since expanded to the restaurant. Apparently, business has been so good that she has now opened a bakery. The lovely Ruzhdije greeted me when I walked in. She was enthusiastic, friendly, and explained what all the baked goods were and told me which ones contained nuts and which ones didn't. (I'm fine with nuts.) I arrived about 30 minutes after they opened so she was still bringing out fresh baked goods from the kitchen. All their items are Vegan and most are gluten-free. The pastry case was filled with muffins, cookies, coffee cakes, and other yummy looking baked treats. They make their own bread with organic wheat flour, which is used for vegan sandwiches. There is also a variety of house made sides, dips, and salads available to go in addition to coffee, beverages, and cute novelty gifts. Everything looked fantastic and I wanted one of each. Eventually, I decided on a chocolate chip muffin with cinnamon streusel on top ($5), a berry oat crumble bar ($4.75), and a coffee cake ($5.50). Since I live a few blocks away everything was still warm when I got home, which made me happy. Chocolate Chip Muffin: This had a nice flavor. It was moist and fluffy inside. The chips were slightly melted. The top was crisp, and I loved the crunchy cinnamon streusel topping. Berry Oat Crumble Bar: Delicious! The shortbread base was soft and coated with a thin layer of berry jam. It was topped with a yummy coconut oat crumble. (Ruzhdije said this was her favorite. One bite and I knew why.) Coffee Cake: Super moist and tasty with a ribbon of cinnamon inside. The coco cinnamon crumb topping was very tasty. These delightful treats were amazing. I would have never guessed that they were Vegan/gluten-free. They were flavorful and the texture and quality was perfect. Kitchen Mouse - The Bakery is just around the corner from the restaurant. Food is ok, overpriced. The pancake was a nice healthy take on a pancake. I was annoyed that the "maple syrup" was actually molasses but at least it wasn't that fake pancake syrup. Pretty noisy inside. Outside seating is in the street like during Covid. Edit: I am from New Hampshire, I know what good maple syrup taste like and this is not it. I recommend getting the plate with eggs & mushroom sausages for a balance of sweet and savory. The breakfast sandwich was also sooo filling and good--the millet toast is crispy and slightly nutty! Holy vegan! This place is an awesome spot if you're looking for great vegan food with lots of flavor. I love how you order at the register and find your own seat. Super casual. Large outdoor seating area and the service was great. The chilaquiles were flavorful especially after adding the jackfruit al pastor (an absolute must). The pancake was also delicious and the dirty chai was one of the best I've had. Another plus is that their "dairy" of choice is oat milk (I'm biased but it's my favorite milk so I was excited). Wasn't aware that this restaurant is a vegan/vegetarian only, but we have no problem with that. We wish it was labeled on their yelp page. Overall, all of their food are good, I love the pancakes, and my sesame rice cake which comes with mushroom salad is good too! The crispy mushrooms are very flavorful. We had to wait around 15 minutes, but we were able to secure a table beforehand. Parking was tricky, but we managed to find some street parking across the restaurant. read more

The prices have gone up and now house favorites are half the portion and charging extra for what use to already come in it. The staff is so nice and it's such a great place but to make the portion smaller and up charge $3+ and then charge more to add on ingredients that use to already be in it feels wrong. I understand food cost has gone up but it would be better to raise the prices and keep it as is or if it isn't cost efficient just take it off your menu.
