We walked over here for some morning coffee after having breakfast down the street. It was quite a popular coffee shop. The inside was full, but make sure to walk all the way to the back through the door, and there is a full outdoor patio with tons of picnic tables, even a handful of them under the shaded cover. Such a great spot to come with kids and have them run around freely. They had a pretty good variety on the menu and I always love to see hojicha drinks. I ordered the hojicha honey latte as a hot drink and I really enjoyed it. My husband got the Figueroa latte and I liked that it came with a little biscuit on top. Nothing super fancy here but just really good quality coffee! It looks like they have parking on the backside so you can walk through the patio and back door to get in here, which is nice since the street parking on the front is limited. read more

Came for lunch because I wanted to try out their foods. It was pretty busy on a Wednesday at lunchtime but we were able to get a table. It filled up soon after that. We got the Civil Avo Toast (nice presentation and unique and tasty combination of flavors), Barbacoa Breakfast Burrito (tasty but shockingly small for $16.75), and Liquid Gold (matcha with lavender, good but not worth $8.25). Wife and I decided to stop by this spot as we were walking through highland park. This spot has gorgeous decor inside. Everything was clean and organized and looked very pleasant. We got an iced coffee and a matcha and with tip ended up paying around $16. The service was great and we got our drinks in just a few minutes. Wasn't too crowded on a beautiful Sunday around noon. Great latte, I got a lavender flavored one that was very nice. Breakfast sandwich was really good too, fluffy eggs, nice cheese, good sauce and bacon. More on the expensive side but that's everything these days... Service also great, shout out to the employee who was nice to me even though my lack of sleep addled brain looked up the menu online, failed to realize the menu changed a lot, and then blankly stare and panic at the cash register. Alas alas I blame the construction at my apartment. Ambiance also nice they have a good back patio and pretty nice seating. It was a bit busy on the Friday morning I went though. At my last visit to Civil Coffee, I fed both sides of my hunger -- my carnivorous side that loves a juicy steak and that other side that unleashes a full-blown vegicide on her plate. Since me and making decisions needed no coin toss for this particular brunchy event, I decided to go for both. The Barbacoa (brunch) Tacos, made with seasoned shredded Caribbean-spiced beef, loaded with avocado mash, and a tangy pickled onion on top, did not disappoint. Despite their petite size, this beefy duo is quite filling -- guess it's all that protein and good avocado fat trapped between a crispy corn tortilla. Decadent in taste, yet not too Civil has a wide variety of quality coffees, along with more of my favorite matcha tea drinks. The quick service at the front counter was a plus, though I can't say it was warm + friendly. Perhaps it was just a mirror to the gray day outside. Civil Coffee is a chic and cozy coffee shop nestled in the Central Highland Park neighborhood. I stopped in for a late Saturday morning iced coffee and bite to eat. Definitely try the the Cafe and Crema if you are looking for a chilled delight in 12oz that gets you going. The EBC breakfast sandwich was ok. Maybe better at the shop than on the go. The staff was friendly and you could see the cooks right behind the register. Nothing to hide with lots of fresh ingredients in sight. I had a nice lunch date with a friend here at Civil Coffee, the Avocado Toast was absolutely delicious & a unique offering from any coffee spot I've ever tried. It had sweet peas on it and was served over warm sourdough. The coffee & matcha tasted authentic & delicious. Ambiance inside was nice & could be a good place to get some work done, it was packed inside so we had to sit outdoors which was fine but it was very hot out there as a heads up for anyone visiting on a warm So-Cal day. I tend to write reviews only when a place is special in some sort of way that catches me off guard or is consistently really good. Civil is consistently really good! Have had cappuccinos, flat whites and lattes here. I love matcha but make my own and don't want to chance getting a bitter low grade matcha that's heartbreaking. Maybe one day I'll gamble and try it. The Arroyo is genuinely one of my favorite drinks in LA. The lavender syrup is truly the best damn lavender syrup I've ever had. The interior is amazing at their original location here in Highland Park, with a really cute patio as well in the back. It's significantly busier than their DTLA location but this location really puts it all together very well. There are plenty of tables that are good for chatting or studying, although whether they are available is a lot more hit or miss than in DTLA. read more

I really wanted to like it here. It's latino-owned, it's close to my house, it's a staple of the neighborhood, the coffee's pretty good and it looks cool inside. Gave it so many chances. Unfortunately, I think I've finally had enough. The service is very hit or miss. I've been in and had very friendly and efficient service one day and crappy, dead behind the eyes, dismissive rudeness the next. But I don't go there for friendship, so I don't really care. The reason why I will not be returning is because they are ripping off their customers. I ordered a quad shot of espresso, no milk, no water. They were really good at charging me for 4 shots of espresso, not so good at pouring it. The general understanding is that a shot is approximately 1 to 1.5 ounces of liquid. When I got the drink they handed me this thimble of coffee. I knew it wasn't right. This isn't the first time I've had this issue, the last time they assured me they had poured the correct amount (and made me feel like a dummy for even asking). Instead of arguing with them, I took my doll-sized coffee home and weighed it on my digital scale, it weighed 1.09 ounces INCLUDING THE CUP & LID! I can abide the spotty customer service, but I cannot abide being ripped off and gaslit. There is a lot of coffee in the area. Do yourself a favor and go to any of them rather than this place. read more

Thought the oat milk vanilla shaken espresso drink (with black Hawaiian salt??) was overpriced at near 7.00 and had a nasty aftertaste. Staff was not really friendly. They don't have a menu for you to look at until you get up to the counter (on the countertop) so it's sort of an awkward rushed ordering, unless you know what you want ahead of time. It is large and spacious, but loud and not somewhere I'd sit to read or study or relax. Running 'round Highland and stumbled upon this little gem. This place is a good vibe. LOVED IT! A decent but good menu and a variety of pastries to go with the brew. I go here an ungodly amount. I've gotten to know a couple of the baristas. Liquid gold is my favorite matcha order I've ever had, and they have free dog treats!!! Civil Coffee (est 2016) is a modern coffee shop located in gentrified Highland Park neighborhood of NorthEastern LA. Owned by the Morales brothers. It has modest selection of coffee, teas, pastries and food. They have merch and coffee bags for purchase. Of their three locations this is the most spacious and popular among locals. I arrived on a weekend, as a first time customer, and was met by a long line. However, that didn't dampen my spirit for it was moving at a modest rate. I ordered an Iced Coffee, Hot Latte and Avocado Toast. Both coffee drinks were perfectly brewed and concocted to my liking. Similarly, my AT on thick sourdough was delightful and tasty not to mention its beautiful presentation. Staff were amiable and professional. Atmosphere was relaxing. No Wifi available which was very surprising and disheartening. Coffee shop without wifi? It's like the most basic requirement. Prices were economically fair. I must be a Civil Coffee fan because this is now my 3rd one I've tried around the city! Up in Highland Park, this location is actually their OG shop. Tons of indoor seating and their cold brews are always perfect! I'm a big fan of the basic black at Civil Coffee, both iced and just plain ol' drip.
