Modu cafe is a minimalist coffee shop with lots of interesting options on their menu and available pastries. I went here at around 9:30 AM on a Saturday. For parking, I found a spot on Milwaukee Ave. Once inside, it was very busy, so there was a wait before ordering. My girlfriend and I were barely able to grab a seat with a table. Prior to the visit, we were very interested in the milk bun and the perilla lime tart. After browsing the items they had, we did go for those options. I also got the Modu Latte as well. To my surprise, the Perilla Lime Tart was the sweetest item and my favorite item! The tart itself was firm and the perilla added a unique flavor. I also tried their signature milk cream bun and it was between good and decent. What I liked most was the cream which was soft, not too sweet, and light. I could eat a lot of that haha. The brioche bun used as could've been better though. It was bready and firm, whereas I would've preferred the bread to be fluffy and airy. This would be great as a sandwich bun though. The interior and exterior are pretty nice, I like the vibes. There's a main table which people can share as well as individual seats and tables. There's wifi here, but I didn't see any outlets. Beware of street parking on York Blvd. I found luck on a neighboring residential street but street sweeping (No Parking) is from 9-11am Wednesday on one side and Thursday on the other side. Plenty of seats and tables, great for a work from cafe kind of day but might need to go early. People that were there already around noon didn't seem like they would be leaving anytime soon. We only ordered one coffee because we had watered down drinks from another place a few minutes prior. Modu Latte was terrible. Nothing special to it, tasted like a McDonalds' coffee but topped with a cream top.. We really came for their pastries and those were much better than their coffee. If you drive too fast you will miss this place. You can see Galco market not directly across but close enough to know your in the right area. I didn't try the coffee this time but I did get some pastries to try. With all four of the pastry I got, they are not too sweet and I love that. Black sesame mochi cake loaf, you can taste the earthly toasted sesame and the texture is mochi but not too much. Lime tart, really unique with the sugar leaf on top and it goes well with the filling. Tart and I want to say I was able to taste a little of cheese in it too. Cream bun, sooo good airy and fluffy, you don't feel guilty eating it. I came here with a friend on a Sunday morning after seeing it on Instagram. It wasn't too crowded for a weekend and the interior had ample seating for us. We ordered a yuzu tart and the signature cream pan for our pastries. For drinks, we ordered the matcha latte and the hojicha latte. Starting off with the cream pan, I would say it's solid for what it is; however, it's nothing to write home about. It wasn't too sweet nor heavy which I appreciated, but other than that it was pretty standard. The yuzu tart was very impressive. I admit that I am a big fan of yuzu, but this tart was made quite well. It wasn't too overly powerful, but it still had a nice aroma and taste of yuzu with each bite. Modu is a cute café just a bit down on York Blvd in a quieter part of town, but offers a nice drink selection and an especially robust Asian-inspired dessert menu. I opted for the Modu Latte, as well as a yuzu kumquat tart and two cookies (black sesame and misu-garu). The cookies were phenomenal, chewy and full of sesame and soybean flavor. Even better was that they weren't too sweet! The yuzu kumquat tart was tasty, although I would've preferred a stronger yuzu punch, as it was quite subtle. I got the matcha tonic which tasted really good, my friend got the coffee tonic, was more sour and bitter than the matcha one. My wife got the best one, the Yuja passion fruit spritz, think it's yuzu but another name. First coffee visited that's on the Highland Park Coffee Passport! If you haven't heard of it, and are a coffee lover, I highly suggest purchasing one. Not only do you get discounts for all local coffee shops, but you get to support small businesses too! The first place on our list was Modu Cafe. There isn't a specific order of places to visit, but this one was open and closest during the time we wanted to grab coffee. Located on York Blvd, Modu cafe is a well known coffee and pastry shop. I've actually heard of their pastries before from peers. Parking was found relatively easily as it's in a part of York that is not as busy. The cafe itself is very aesthetic and perfect for multi purpose studying or working. Although I will say their seats are mainly wooden stools or a wooden bench, so if you're looking for long term comfort while seated, maybe take it to go. Staff at the front were very nice and we ended up getting a cold brew variant, a sweeter latte, and one of their brownie cookie offerings. The drinks were made fast and to our liking. Now when you read the menu for the first time, each drink features the specific coffee notes and flavors that you will find in the drink. Usually when I read these on other coffee shop menus I rarely taste what they are highlighting. With Modu Cafe though, what you read is exactly what you'll taste. The cold brew I ordered featured notes of dark chocolate and citrus. I kid you not that was exactly what I tasted in that same order too. This drink was so enjoyable especially if you like coffee for its true flavor. The latte was good too but it wasn't my drink so can't comment much on it. I came for the Milk Cream Bun but fell in love with the Perilla Lime Tart. Came here on a Saturday afternoon around 2pm and the pastry selection was limited. I found street parking easily and arrived to find only seven people in line before me. The shop is small and has a natural feel. In the display case, there were only six desserts available. Luckily, I got the last three Milk Cream Buns of the day. The cream is very light and airy, the bun is thick. I wouldn't recommend putting the bun in the fridge because the cream consistency altered and the bun was tough. The pastry is cute but not my favorite. The Perilla Lime Tart was my favorite and I'd recommend it to anyone that loves Key Lime Pie. Their desserts, though, immediately caught my attention. Everything looks so beautiful and Instagram‑worthy that you'd expect it to taste amazing. I was in the area visiting another coffee shop and I had another craving for another coffee drink because the first coffee shop that I went to was a really small drink that left me craving for more. I thought I was going to get another drink from the same spot but then I Google and saw this so I figured I'd try somewhere different with another cup of coffee. . I actually got myself a ice Americano and I really do love the cup it is served in a half glass with some ice cube and it was really great quality espresso beans that is more on the floral side. It was not acidic and it was more bold. . The star of the show is their pastry case. I had to get their black sesame Mochi cake which was amazing. For any black sesame lover this is the one that you must get because it's a mochi which is a texture of chewy and bouncy. The black sesame flavor was really nice and bold and you can taste it for sure. . I also try their milk bread with fresh cream inside and it was great but the black sesame Mochi cake stole my heart. I will go try out their other pastries in their case next time. . The ambience inside is minimal and it is really nice and bright. They sell pastries here (and I think they lean Asian influenced) as well as their caffeinated and non-caffeinated beverages. The space inside has a minimalist look and small tables that where you can set your drinks down (or laptops for the people doing work/ school work). There's also a large table in the middle area of the room. I came in right before close so the place wasn't busy. I needed a pick me up because I was grabbing dinner soon and felt a bit sluggish. I made a dedicated drive to come here as I was intrigued with the unique pastries that looked to be made with Korean flavors. Iced Matcha was alright... It did taste very watery. I I prefer a deep greener color but instead it was more murky. I do appreciate they include agave syrup for sweetener. It was smooth and I like the glassware they put their drinks in- cute! I tried the Milk Bun as the presentation looked impressive. It was an okay sweet treat but the consistency and the taste of the bread and cream tastes EXACTLY like the Korean pastries you can find at the Mom Owned Korean Bakeries/ Korean Plaza Bakeries for cheaper. I wouldn't get the Milk Bun again. I think if I came back I would try the Dark Chocolate Brownie as it read it was 70% Dark Chocolate and it's not often I see a decadent brownie with high cacao use but again, nothing to go crazy about. The cafe is airy, bright, and casual. I think this is a good place to chat over coffee and some bites. All the seats tend to be taken. I wanted to do laptop work but I couldn't stay for long as they don't have any outlets anywhere. The benches are wooden and not very comfortable. We got two of the specials on the drink menu: the corn latte and a spritz (I am honestly blanking on the name...someone please help me out here if they recognize it). We also got the black sesame mochi cake, but honestly sooo many of the pastries were calling out to us...all looked so good. I'm also a sucker for a fun plate or cup. The squiggly cups were so cute! The corn latte was very creamy and loved how prominent the corn tasted - almost tasted buttery if that makes sense. Also enjoyed how it didn't taste too sweet to the point where it drowned out the coffee taste. I didn't want to drink too much caffeine in the afternoon, so the spritz was a great choice for me. It was a little heavy for my party of 2 nevertheless. -Boricha Brulee Cheesecake: The brulee top was caramelized nicely and the cheesecake was smooth for the most part; however the barely tea flavors didn't come through as much as I had hoped. -Perilla Lime Tart: Loved the candied perilla leaf, especially how crunchy it was and how the sweetness temporized the tartness of the lime cream. I do wish that the perilla leaf flavors were incorporated some how (the sugar layer seemed to take over the flavors), and if the tart crust could be less rigid. -Cookies: I was a fan of the miso/garu cookie which was super buttery and strong in miso flavors. The black sesame one radiated sesame flavors and went well with the chocolate chunks. Both were chewy! Aesthetically pleasing, minimalistic space with great natural lighting and a good amount of seating but busy on weekend mornings (as expected). Perfect spot for an espresso tonic that's not too sweet. Wait is typically a few minutes to order (there's always a line). It's a bit difficult to find a table to sit and drink as well but overall, drinks are consistent and quite delicious. read more

Super cute cafe. There is street parking nearby, no lot. They had various pastry options even around noon which is great! They all looked amazing. I got the matcha latte with cream top. It was good but not the best. The cream top definitely needs some more sweetness or umami. It was almost like a canned whip cream and not a thicker smoother one. read more

Modu was recommended by a friend! There was no line which was lovely. The space was decorated nicely, very clean and asthetically pleasing. I was bummed their milk cream bun was sold out but their hojicha mochi muffin was also really good! Their matcha was very refreshing as well, the house cream top took it to another level. Safe to say I drank it faster than I should have. They were also very nice and disclosed the matcha they used! They use Hinata by Kettl! read more
