We got seated and had our orders taken promptly, but it took longer than usual to get our food. However, our hostess checked in on us and updated us about our food, and once we got it, the food itself was good! I tried the tornado galbi omurice for the first time- light, fluffy twirled egg and a sweet glazed rice. I would recommend sharing with a friend because it gets heavy after awhile, so it's nice to eat something else as well. The other dish that we got was the blackstone benedict which came with a side of seasoned roasted potatoes. A classic brunch must-have, surprisingly less heavy than the omurice! Located on a Main Street in Oakland. Ok amount of parking for a busy area, also some parking in the residential areas. Came around 9:50a on a Sunday morning and there was only 1 party ahead of us and was told the wait was 15-20 mins. I left to grab cash and 5 minutes 10 minutes later there were 5-6 other parties waiting. Hostess was not the most welcoming but our server was pretty nice. They won't seat you until your whole part is present. They aren't a super small place but they aren't huge either, they had both indoor and outdoor seating available. What we got; Tater poutine - the tater tots had a really good crispy to it and the gravy was savory but i was hoping there was more cheese on it. The egg, however, was gorgeous and was a nice addition. 6/10 Mac n cheese - i love Mac n cheese, but this one did not deliver. There was no ooey gooey cheesy going on with this. It lacked cheesy flavor. 0/10 Egg soufflé - the soufflé itself was really fluffy but had an odd taste to it, it didn't really taste like an egg.. 5/10 Tornado omurice with galbi - hands down something i would get again. The egg was perfectly done and the rice was really flavorful. The galbi was a must in this and there was a good amount in it. And the gravy was delicious. It was a little on the sweet side but it really pulled together the whole meal. - 10/10 Big has scramble - i didn't try this so i can't give a review, but my girlfriend got it and was pleased with her meal. Some of the meals came with some Yukon house potatoes and those were cooked really well and were flavorful. The drinks we got were also ok. Slim selection on the alcohol (no don julio specifically) but i realize this isn't a bar. I usually order the Florentine Benedict which is (perfectly cooked) poached eggs, sautéed spinach, tomato, and parmesan on top of ciabatta bread and covered in Meyer hollandaise. It's served with their crispy Yukon potatoes. I usually slather potatoes in ketchup... but not these potatoes. These potatoes I eat with the leftover hollandaise sauce. They're crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and soooooo good. I often get a side of the Millionaire's Bacon... which is two huge pieces of thick bacon baked with brown sugar, black, cayenne, and red pepper. It's probably one of the best things I've ever eaten. The Millionaire's Bloody Mary is also delicious. Also, you can't go wrong with the Mascarpone Stuffed Deep Fried French Toast with pure Vermont make syrup. This was a 100 minutes wait in person on a Sunday, LOL. I made a huge mistake of not making reservations online, so don't be like and do this before arriving here!! My friend told me you can't really taste "wagyu" since it was made into a patty, so it tasted like any other patty to be honest. This was a light dish, so you will be hungry afterwards. This dish was flavorful and slightly greasy. - $15 Sprout Bibimbap (red cabbage, onion, apple, wakame, mushrooms, spinach, and fried egg, rice, red gochujang sauce). Adding any protein like tofu/chicken/pork is +$4 or galbi is +$6. For my dish, I added the tofu, which was only 5 small pieces of fried tofu. This dish was VERY light, meaning portion size is small. This is such a cute brunch place! I went to the SF location 2 years ago and they opened one in Oakland and I was so excited! I went here with some friends and they have outdoor seating, we went there with no reservation but they were able to seat 5 people really quickly! The hosts and servers were very kind and helpful! I ordered the matcha latte and it was delicious! The caramel iced latte was also so yummy, very sweet. For entrees, I had the Korean FC & waffles. It was SO. DAMN. GOOD. The chicken was perfectly crispy and flavorful, the waffle was just the right sweetness. The combination of the two was truly amazing. I also tried the Mascarpone French Toast and it was also sooooo yummy! It wasn't too sweet at all and was truly some of the best French toast I've ever had. Both a precovid experience and take out experiences for this review. First time here was around when they opened and I had already been to their SF location before so I know about that bacon. I didn't realize it was going to be such a small place but then remember other spots in the area it made sense. I had the omurice in SF already but I hear this was another version so just wanted to try it here because my mom hadn't experienced it yet. Luckily we also ordered the Stuffed french toast to share and that was so good! That crunch was so so good I could've had a 2nd one honestly. For the takeout covid experience, Pretty good presentation considering they were in boxes and sometimes food looks like it was just plopped in there but it was clear somebody took their time setting these up. This is probably preference but I really liked that the flapjacks were a chewy texture but the filling is what caught me off guard and I wasn't sure what I was really eating. Outdoor dining experience during covid: We went on a Saturday to dine out. Every employee wore masks and gloves. It was really busy by 12pm so I highly recommend you utilize the yelp waitlist system to get yourself on before you arrive. We ordered the Tornado Galbi Omurice and the Blackstone Benedict. The blackstone benedict is a classic poached egg benedict with the millionaire's bacon, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, and a tangy/sweet/creamy hollandaise sauce. This is a must try if you haven't already. I believe they are the same owners as some other restaurants in the city so they always have this on their menu too (Blackwood, Surisan, Sweet maple). The tornado omurice egg was perfectly soft and bouncy, the fried rice inside was perfectly seasoned, and the sauce was the perfect consistency and salt level. The toppings on the egg however were a little fishy and I think it might have been furikake dried fish seasoning that they used to top it off. Overall, the experience and the food was amazing. The Millionaire's Bacon alone is worth a visit - a thick "fillet" of bacon we thought looked like a small fish it was so big, drenched in syrup and topped with lots of pepper. I had high hopes for this place. Aesthetically the food looked like it was gonna be good. No flavor at all I didn't taste any Ube in the latte more like food coloring. We spent over 80 for breakfast and the wife and I were disappointed. Very nice restaurant IMHO I'd go somewhere else that has better tasting food especially for the price. read more

Came here for a Monday brunch and found myself absolutely entranced by, for lack of a better term, toast. French toast, to be exact. Stuffed with marscapone cheese and littered with a delightful assortment of fruit, this little beauty made my Monday. The toast is the star - crisp, crunchy, and not overly sweet - but I found the sides of egg and bacon a nice addition to the meal. My date got the stone pot with tofu - it's huge, and it was delicious, but honestly the French toast stole my heart and won the day. Service was fast and friendly as well, and the location is beautiful! Absolutely will be coming back as soon as possible. read more

I regret I am so rarely in this neighborhood, I likely won't dine at Kitchen Story again soon. It is sufficiently good, however, I could see someone driving on a trip in order to eat here. My wife and I, with our little dog, Bebe, stopped in Oakland en route from San Francisco to Sacramento. We make that trip at least once per year, to see family and friends and sometimes for me to run a race such as a half marathon or their moonlight (Moo-light, referencing their agriculture background) event (last time in 107 degree heat). The place we had enjoyed on the last trip was inexplicably not taking reservations. Kitchen Story was better anyway. I had millionaire's bacon and the deep fried French toast. I had thought millionaire's bacon was a brand. I researched it for this review. It is a type, not trademarked. Theirs was thick, sweet, and, well, flawless as bacon always is to those who enjoy that cut of pork. I had been consuming too much. My doctor told me no more. So I have it only when I dine out, and then sparingly. This was an occasion when it was worth it, to indulge. That is to praise the quality as much as possible. The deep fried French toast had mascarpone cheese stuffed inside. Like the bacon, this dish cannot be recommended for its healthfulness. I used to have a deep fried French toast in Ann Arbor, at a breakfast joint that is about to close, the proprietor having sold the building to University of Michigan, in order to retire. That is the standard I would set, met and surpassed here. Although the toast could have been more eggy and moist, that is a stylistic quibble. It was filling and satisfying. My wife had a simple pair of scrambled eggs. That was accompanied by roasted potatoes. She shared. Those deserve the greatest compliment. I would say they were the best roasted potatoes I have ever had. The side is one I do not care for in general; they are typically bland. In this instance, the skins were crisped by an expert hand, while the innards were creamy and fluffy. Perhaps they were heated twice, as French fries are. Whatever the technique, the chef should be celebrated for this item by itself. If you are fond of roasted potatoes, you should travel here for a taste. I hesitate to inquire or speculate about the fat. It might be duck or one of those that would be frowned upon. The service also was friendly and fast. People seem to know the place. A half dozen very noisy seemingly young graduate students, maybe in public health, had a rendezvous at the next table. They were contemplating cocktails. Their good cheer should be encouraged, and only those who are churlish would fail to appreciate how the company of friends is to be supported in our era of a loneliness epidemic.
