Was craving for chirashi bowl and found this place which is not far from home. Decided to call in and order, at first I was kind of sceptical, not sure how fresh is the fish, but my craving was so bad that I was willing to take the chance. To my surprise, fish were fresh, rice was nicely season and perfectly cook, and on top of that they have lunch special for chirashi bowl :). We also tried 1 of their specialty roll, inside is shrimp tempura and top is seared salmon, that was pretty good as well. They have a lot of options on their menu but the thing I was eyeing for was the lunch specials. The lunch special consist of a ramen of your choice and a side of sushi of your choice as well. We came here for dinner on a Saturday evening. Restaurant is not that spacious, it easily fills up. We came early enough (around 5:45pm) to get seated without any wait. There are variety of food to choose from, sashimi, sushi, ramen, entree combo. It took us good 15 minutes to decide what we really want to eat. We ordered a passion fruit ice tea, Katsu Don (comes with miso soup), and sashimi platter A. We got an extra miso soup and green tea cheese cake with yelp check-in! I would give this place a 3.5/5 for their lunch combo. Ramen: so far so good. Nothing really stood out except their soft boiled egg. I like how they marinated it with sake/mirin and soy sauce. Other than that, it came with bean sprouts, dried black fungus, cooked spinach, 4 pcs of cha-shu, bamboo shoots, green onions and 1/2 of an egg. Spicy tuna lunch bowl: it tasted alright, but the portion was really small. Sides: it came with a small bowl of salad, pickled radish, and orange. Service: the servers were quite responsive, but none of the servers promoted their yelp check-in promotion (free handroll) when we ordered. We were already full when we found out about it. I am very surprised that this place has 4 stars. We came here on a Saturday night. The two of us ordered a seared tuna salad, ankimo, sashimi plate, wagyu sushi, crab roll, and a bottle of hot sake. Tuna salad: tuna has nice seared flavor but the salad is soaked in the dressing. It was wayyy too salty. Ankimo: I thought it was overpriced. We got 2 small pieces for $9 and tasted like supermarket quality. Sashimi plate: the fish was sliced big and thick. Quality was meh. Wagyu sushi: they said it's A5 but it's definitely not. They gave us very thick slice though. I asked for it seared because the flavor is more intense when the fat starts to melt. However it was a bit chewy, no intense flavor, and not the melt in your mouth kind of wagyu. Blue crab roll: blue crab was too dry and not a lot of flavor Sake: this is the worst item. The sake was oxidated. The color was very yellow and didn't taste good. Overall it was a bad experience and I will never go back. We spent $150 for two people. At this price range I can get better and more food in authentic Japanese restaurants. read more

I called to let them know I received this text and that I didn't make this reservation and would like to be removed. She asked well how did you get that text then? Um great question, you tell me. Decided to try this place out. Got a chicken teriyaki, 3 pc gyoza, sparkle roll, and 2 piece tuna sushi just to get a feel for everything. Overall...disappointing. The tuna was oddly cut and wasn't of great quality. As spicy tuna is usually made from the scraps of said tuna, you can imagine that the sparkle roll also suffered as a result. I poked the spicy tuna open and was rather appalled by the color, though at least it was still edible. The shrimp tempura inside it, on the other hand, was half cooked at best. All things combined, edible, but not great. At a lunch menu price of $12 the sparkle roll is barely acceptable, while the tuna sushi is a hard pass at $5 a piece. The chicken teriyaki was bad. The meat was old, the sauce was bland, and it was scraps of dark meat that looked as unappealing as it tastes. They give you a horseradish dipping sauce on the side that you pretty much have to use just to force it down, and even then I left half of it unfinished. The gyoza was okay, but I'm also fairly certain it comes out of a box. Overall, I'd give the kitchen food a pass, unless you're looking for udon perhaps. Miso soup was good but served in a paper takeout bowl, as was the rice. Gyoza served on a takeout lid. Felt cheap, which is ironic considering the lunch combo was $18.95. All in all, not something I would recommend, but also not something I would vehemently protest against. There's better for cheaper, but if you're just swinging by for lunch you could probably find something to get through the meal. I'd heavily advise you skip over anything from the kitchen, and probably most of the raw sushi, and just get some cooked special rolls. Tentative 2/5. read more

The two times I've been here it was both very very good. I recently went for their lunch special. We had a chirashi bowl for $16.95, 2 uni sushi for $14, 1 salmon hand roll for $5 and a salmon sushi for $3. Prices were fairly cheap especially the chirashi bowl lunch special. Their fish is super fresh. Would highly recommend coming for lunch for their lunch specials! In total for 2 people the bill was about $41 without tax. A hidden gem is their picked/fresh wasabi. If you love wasabi you should definitely ask them for their pickled wasabi, it adds an extra kick to any sushi. The ambience in there was also very soothing. They had calming music in the background and inside was kinda dim. I would definitely come back for lunch! Oh don't forget to check in for mochi ice cream! read more

Server never checked in on us, I had to flag a server down for another beer. I was down to spend alot of money here but the server never put what I ordered into the computer so I never got to try anything I ordered. I won't be back just because the service was so bad. This place offers $180 Omakase, for $180 your beer needs to come in a chilled beer glass, everything here is disposable plastic cups...tis tis. I imagine if the service was better it could have been better but the server was too busy trying to go home. I won't return! read more

KIYO is a good sushi restaurant. I come here every time they have their special bluefin tuna carving events. This is because of the $1 tuna handrolls, $2 bluefin tuna nigiri/sashimi, and $3 bluefin fatty tuna nigiri/sashimi. Outside of these tuna carving events, I hardly ever see anyone actually eating here. When I first visited KIYO when they first opened, I was blown away by the interior design because it was so unsuspecting from a small shop in Arcadia's shopping hub. The reason for the 3 star review rather than the 4 or 5 stars is because they seriously lack the necessary training in service. Despite the WOW factor of the interior, my experience at KIYO was quickly made sour when the waitress behaved impatiently and made me feel rushed. I cannot forget to mention that it took a while to even get her attention to take my order. On multiple occasions, this has happened. My worst experience was when I showed up on time to my reservation expecting to be seated. Since I had a reservation (which they organized through Yelp's Waitlist), I was told I would receive a text message when my table is ready. I stood outside for over 30 minutes waiting for the text message and/or for someone to come out and say my table is ready, but as I watched party after party come and go, I realized they must have messed up somewhere. I go inside to talk with an employee and it turns out they entered the wrong phone number into their Waitlist feature when I gave them my number over the phone. I saw on a sticky note behind the counter that my phone number was written down correctly. Anyways, they were kind of apologetic and tried to make me feel better by offering free mochi at the end of the meal. For appetizers, I had the edamame, agedashi tofu, assorted tempura and some hand rolls. For mains, I had the premium chirashi bowl, which came with a wide variety of fresh seafood. It was definitely a filling meal but I felt like splurging. Food-wise, KIYO does well and are pretty consistent. All of their sushi are fresh and you can really taste and smell that. One thing I noticed that sets them apart from most other sushi restaurants in the neighborhood is that they use a special blend of wasabi. Their wasabi appears to be kinda of chunky and less "spicy" which leads me to believe they use SOME real wasabi in their wasabi paste. If you are reading this, follow up with KIYO's social media because the tuna carving events are definitely a treat. I was able to watch them carve a nearly 400 pound bluefin tuna that was shipped in the day before. Not only is it a sight to see, the 1, 2, and 3 dollar bluefin tuna sushi is a deal and extremely delicious. Be aware though, you need to put in a reservation and you're expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to your reserved time. If you're not there, they will not honor your reservation, which totally sucks. read more

We ordered from GrubHub last night, and had the spicy ramen, edamame, and veggie ramen. The spicy ramen has no description of ingredients on their menu, anywhere. I even checked online. It came and was filled to the brim with shellfish. Had I been a very picky eater or allergic I would not have been able to eat it. My wife had the veggie ramen and it was extremely bitter. She couldn't even eat it. The edamame and shishito peppers were very overcooked and also had that same bitter taste. Probably one of the worst bowls of ramen I've had. My significant other also awarded this monstrosity the same title. A few reviewers on here mentioned the ramen was bad and I should have listened. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen (x2), chicken karaage and shishito peppers. The karaage was average and the peppers were shishito peppers. It's sort of hard to mess those up. But the miserable star of the show was ramen. It's impressive how the broth had zero and I mean zero flavor. It essentially water with off white food coloring. Which is an impressive achievement because they toss in a lot of greens. What was even more impressive was the chashu. Imagine Oscar Mayer in the deli section at your local market. Yes, it was that thin. Don't get me started on the noodles... I'f you're looking for ramen then I'd strongly suggest looking elsewhere. Unless off white water is your thing. read more
