This place opened twenty years ago and probably hasn't updated their décor since then, but that was okay with us! Jason M. and I wanted something sweet and coffee after our anniversary dinner at the nearby Forbidden City Bistro. Since our beloved NoRA cupcake was already closed for the night, we stopped there when we passed there on a whim and recognized the place from Yelp. With the cool looking baristas and college co-ed hipsters working on their Macs, this was clearly a hangout for Wesleyan University students. Though I'm older and not hip, I still felt welcomed. I loved that there was a whole menu of different coffee and non-coffee drinks. Above the register was a board with the special brews of the day; one of which was an Irish Crème flavor. I asked the guy if there was a decaf version, he offered to make a plan coffee with a shot of Irish Crème syrup. Since it was at night, I needed decaf and went with the decaf French Roast, which was something I have never seen before. The brew was bold but did not have the caffeine explosion. It didn't need milk or sugar. In terms of baked goods, the barista apologized for the bare bones selection for pastries because of the snowstorm the day before. Even still, they had a respectable selection. I had the graham bar and Jason had the blueberry scone. It was good alone, but great with coffee because the pastries were a little dry. The welcoming staff will treat you like a Coffee King, You'll be caffeinated, will walk out the door, and will sing. Klekolo draws a diverse crowd, but their coffee is top-notch. They rotate their four flavors of coffee daily, but they always fit within four categories: Flavored, Light Roast, Dark Roast, and High Caffeine. The first time I ever went here I was drowsy and got the Pony Express (which fit into the High-Caffeine category) and I was off the walls at work. I couldn't stop fist-pumping and hopping around, and I was just waiting for a coworker to call Animal Control to come tranquilize me. The coffee did its job, but since then I've just stuck with Dark Roast or a Flavored coffee. I'm a caffeine lightweight. Yesterday their Flavored coffee was Strudel Cake, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Coffee prices are competitive. Staff is down-to-earth and always very personable. They also offer assorted pastries, which are a little pricey but they taste good. Klekolo also supports local artists and hangs artwork on their walls for sale. Sometimes the artwork is a little eccentric, and one time a piece of art had a fetus on it. However, it's cool that the local community supports Klekolo and Klekolo, in turn, supports local artists. The iced coffee was good, the pastry I had was amazing, but the service was horrible. The barista seemed annoyed that he had to come in from outside to serve us, almost as if we had disturbed his time with his friends. Then, because we chose to sit inside (again, all the tables outside were being used by what appeared to be the barista's friends), he seemed annoyed that he had to stay inside with customers. Also, they don't take credit or debit (in this day and age I don't really understand why) which he conveniently pointed out by saying "no cards" but didn't bother to point out the atm that was sitting in a dark corner, almost too dark to see the buttons, until I asked about the closest atm! I love quirky hole in the wall places that have a lot of character, but they have to still offer a level of professionalism and service in order to make the experience a good one! read more

I will forgive Klekolo for being a little short on food after the seventeen snowstorms we had in the three weeks prior to our visit. Nothing like an old, independent coffee shop in a college town. Not being Starbucks alone scores points for this place in my book. It makes me laugh a little at what passes for mild coffee at places like this. I ordered the mild coffee of the day, some sort of "Peaberry Madagascar Aloe Vera Echinacea Koala Sweat," or whatever. And it was darned good, but mild it was most certainly not. Now Dunkin' Donuts has mild coffee. Had a nice large scone with my coffee - couldn't even finish it. And the price was exceptional. Two coffees and two bakery items for 8 bucks and change. Another great example of a local coffee shop! - Lots of different drinks to order from with various flavors - Good variety of milk including Soy AND Almond milk to choose from for us vegans - Baked goods, including some vegan baked goods (really good vegan lemon pound cake!) - Fair trade coffee - Friendly service, unique decor As with most local places, just expect it to be a little slower than your average national coffee chain. Make sure to give yourself an extra 5 minutes if you stop there. Also the music playing is a little bizarre but that makes it fun. One note to the shop - please change your chalkboard to say "fair trade" not "free trade" when mentioning the music night. Big difference!! read more

Let me start off by saying that Klekolo is a great coffee shop. It has a huge selection of world coffees, the brews are always to perfection, the teas are delicious and the desserts are to die for. They have board games, playing cards, reading materials, chess and really encourage people to hang out. Plus they have outdoor seating. These are why it gets four stars. However, it loses a star for atmosphere and the people who frequent the spot. It's the black hole for delinquents, slutty teenagers, kids with mental issues and drug addicts. And I know this because as a messed up teenager I used to hang out there. Now I'm not saying that the people who hang out are bad people or that klekolo as an establishment has any control over the people who patron their shop, so don't get me wrong. But I don't encourage anyone to make this their regular spot unless they are very good at keeping to themselves and avoid making friends. read more

Best spiced chai I've had since I lived in Europe! And the chocolate peanut butter brownie was TO DIE FOR. Only thing I would love to see is a much better sense of style/cozy environment in the shop. Stopped by this place a while back as it was open late, and my gf wanted tea. The guy behind the counter, a man who looked like Action Bronson if he cared more about grooming his beard than his personal hygiene, took offense when I inquired if he could make me a decaf latte. I'm no coffee snob and legitimately wanted to know if these were possible, but he took a passive-aggressive attitude towards me as if I was challenging his barista skills. "Of course I can make that. Why do you think I couldn't make that??" A simple "Sure!" would have sufficed. Through the rest of my order of tea and a brownie, he gave me a thousand-yard stare which made me appreciate how much more I enjoyed grabbing coffee at a basic place like Starbucks. When it came time to pay our bill came to twelve dollars and change. I handed him one $10 bill and one $5; he then proceeded to give me change - specifically, coins. Not $2 worth of quarters and the remaining nickels/dimes, but change as if I had given him only $13 which, if I had handed you only two bills, you would know is impossible. I waited a few moments to see if he would correct himself, while also trying to figure out if he was short-changing me on purpose, which he did not and proceeded to continue giving me that uncomfortable stare. Came in late one night to grab a pound of one of my favorite coffee. When I came in I noticed that the coffee was in open paper containers and asked the girl when they have been filled up. The girl looked at me like I was a moron for asking her that question. I just wanted to make sure that the coffee was not stale. Really strange to me that they left the coffee out in the air like that to spoil. Half the time the barista was texting. The large hazelnut coffee was really a medium at most places and was difficult to transport. There is a clear culture at this coffee place. We gladly took the coffee to go. Great townie coffee spot. I love the space which is decorated often by cops and punks, local art, and hospital employees. Small local shops like this create a great place for disparate groups to mix and mingle. This is good for society as a whole, and ships like this should be supported! I love that they offer a very small coffee for times when you don't want a lot. My only complaint is that I find even medium and light roasts to be more on the harsh acidic and dark side. Still, ten times better than a Dunkin, and although I like sweet harmony, their coffee kinda sucks. read more

This is the best coffee in town, hands down. i've been comming here with varying degrees of regularity since 2004, and since the first time i walked through the door i knew this was the spot for me in middletown. a great selection of single brew drip coffe in addition to a full menu of teas and other "left bank" drinks ensure there is something for everyone. have you ever been in the position of wanting to go for coffee with a friend who thinks a dunkin donuts coollata is the best thing to happen to caffeinated beverages in the last 200 years? try the tripple smooshie, or the witch .... while i dont usually mess with flavor syrup, these are pretty delicious. and though if you are a more conservative individual (read no piercings/tattoos) you may initially feel out of place among the regulars and staff, i have never had a negative experience ordering, even when friends make ridiculous requests ( dictating the amount of crema in a macchiato, for example). also, free wifi, air conditioning, rotating local art, clean bathrooms, assorted pastries chocolate and bottled drinks are just some of the other perks.... minus one star for not being open till 2 am anymore, and because fred is always hogging the chess set. ;) really 4+1/2 stars. read more

I love this place. Contrary to what others have said, I don't feel that this place is "creepy" or antisocial at all. The people are definitely tattooed, etc etc but are perfectly nice and hospitable. Though not without character. Bring your own cup and get 10cents off! Their coffee is the best I've had, and i'm not a huge fan of coffee. I can actually see myself having coffee here, which is saying a lot since I'm a one-coffee kind of gal (Café du Monde!!). However, I recommend their white hot chocolate and mixed coffee lattes. Wonderful combinations and quality syrups. Tip: as for as little foam as possible. The pastries are wonderful too, though cookies are mehhh. Also, they have A WALL OF TEA! A wall of tea! Republic of Tea, Numi, and Traditional Medicinals mainly. The teas are fresh and you can get singles of just about every tea on the wall. They often feature local artists' works, local music, as well as TRIVIA! on Thursday nights around seven-ish. Very fun atmosphere. It took about three trips before my friends and i became regulars. To be honest, I only had a coffee and crumb cake from here. They were pretty good, nothing too special. Then again, I didn't order anything special. But, what I really liked about this place was the atmosphere. I came for breakfast on a Friday morning before work. There were obviously local regulars there hanging out and chatting. People would walk in and talk to the cashier and customers like they knew each other. There was a group of 3 older retired men, just hanging out and catch up with each other while I was there. They were heatedly debating last night's soccer game of Spain versus some other team, I didn't catch. The cashier gave us samples of her strawberry shortcake, which was very good. I went to Klekolo for a cup of coffee after dinner tonight. It is a great little hole in the wall coffee shop, so I am glad my friend suggested it. The staff was really laidback and nice. The coffee was great (we didn't get any desserts), so no complaints there. There also looked to be a bunch of board games and magazines and such... so I could definitely see it being a chill place to hang out. However... the atmosphere was marred due to the fact that some teens were playing with a nerf dart gun back and forth in the shop and being somewhat loud throughout the whole hour we were sitting there talking. It wasn't outlandish, I am pretty laid back, but if there had been more people in there, I could see it being a problem. Have to say, I am very nostalgic about this place despite that my days of loitering within and without of its walls are long past. This is an edgy, alternative spot. It's a great tiny hangout to play cards with friend, push through some homework or sit and ponder life's great mysteries. There is a selection of rotating local art and photography featured. There's a fabulous coffee and tea selection. There's a counter of how many days they have been serving the community... I remember the three digit days, I think now they are well into 4 digits. The bathroom is wall papered by maps of various places. Now that I am old, I mostly swing through to grab an almond, vanilla latte or a chocolate caramel latte. I sometimes glean the ire of judging gazes from the staff who have become increasingly weaponized by their sheer number of piercings and accessories. They've slowly devolved from nerdy and friendly to stoic and unplayful... and sharp... metal everywhere. My rounded nose ring, incessant smiling and tiny wrist tattoo pales in comparison to their level of alternative. I accept my decreased status in this community over the years. In my days, glares were reserved for "the man" and other representatives of authority. Not the chick in a grandma sweater and flip flops. I have also been hassled outside by couple of unsavories in the recent years, another reason to avoid loitering after dark. read more

Interesting place for a coffee and to relax and chill out. It's in a great location between Main Street and the Wesleyan campus with plenty of parking nearby. There's free wifi and plenty of seating. What I like most about this place is the interesting variety of people who come here. You'll run into townies (like myself), Wesleyan students, professionals, construction workers, moms with their kids, all walks of life... it's not like your typical Starbucks crowd but more diverse, eclectic, typically more left leaning, laid back.... My only criticism is I wish they had more outdoor seating like my favorite coffee place in Arlington, VA - Java Shack. read more

Definitely my kind of coffee house. They have a wide variety of coffee drinks including drip, espresso, various latte concoctions, an teas. Anything can be iced or hot. Pretty standard fare. I was in town working, so I stopped here twice to plug in, but let it be known that there's only one spot in there to plug anything in and it's into a power strip under the chair in the far right corner. I think I lucked out both times by going at a time when they weren't super busy (weekdays around noon). The girl working the first day was friendly enough, if not a bit stand offish, but I didn't really mind. The man working the second time was incredibly pretentious, and seemed crazy over his job. Which is fine. Not worth taking a star away over. What IS worth taking a star away is then not taking card. They have an ATM inside, but please, it's 2018, and some of us travel constantly and don't want to carry wads of cash on us. Get with the times. The coffee was delicious. The wifi worked. read more

I really like that this place had so much variety in iced tea flavors. I hate how Starbucks always has the same old three and this place had a lot to offer, all unsweetened for better flexibility on how sweet you want to make your drink. The iced tea was quite tasty, as was the gingerbread cupcake my friend Kim got. However that was really where the positive experiences ended. To be fair I did not try the coffee, but the clientele was (as other reviews have mentioned) a bit off-putting. Some of them did a lot of staring at us and they made the area they were gathered at, the outside tables, so uncomfortable that we elected to sit inside. I bet if I tried the coffee my review would go up to a 3-star, so I am going to do that when I get a chance and edit the review. But for now I have to give it a meh - they didn't even have cold drink cups for the cold drinks! read more

Last time we were here though, the girl behind the register (who was also the only barista working) seemed more content with arguing with her boyfriend (and even let him behind the counter no less!)
