The Knotty Barrel is located on the corner of Market and 9th Ave in downtown San Diego. They have a welcoming atmosphere as well as a huge selection of beers and other libations. Parking is extremely limited in the area being it is downtown. We tried the Potato Chip Nachos on this trip and they were tasty. It's a really different concept in a city full of nacho joints. Honestly I think the beer and libations selection as well as the on point service provided are the key reasons we would return. Went here for some food and drinks before the game and I was met with the rudest service. When I was ordering my drink and food at a table I asked my server for a glass of water and was told to go to the water station. I got up to go ask the bartender and was ignored while they were trying the new kombucha on tap. I was finally helped and asked for a glass of iced water and the male bartender with the bleached hair said to go to the water station and I repeated myself pointing at the glass of water next to me on the bar top saying I wanted a glass with ice and he said "umm like I said we have a water station" and walked away. I went back to my table and was in shock that a restaurant could not serve me water with my food. My server later came with 2 glasses of water which I didn't drink because what the hell?? I'm giving 2 stars for the cooks who made the food but other than that this place needs some better quality people working. I will not go back to this restaurant. read more

I love Knotty Barrel. I have been coming here since 2014 when I lived just a few blocks away. Even when I moved much farther away It was still one of my favorite places. I love its relaxed attitude. Its style is kind of a gastro-pub-y sports bar. Since I moved back closer, I would say we come here once a week. The backyard is a great spot to have a quiet lunch and bring the dog. Dogs are welcome on the front patio and in the backyard. There are even leash hooks and they will give you water for the pups. Here are some of my go-tos on our many visits: Knotty Wings - solid wings. I like to get them with buffalo sauce. Very traditional and flavorful. Ahi Poke Stack - Sesame-Marinated Ahi with some cucumber and a good amount of avocado served with wonton chips. Very tasty. Chicken Strips -cornflake breaded and served with a choice of sauce on the side (i go with buffalo) They are a great snack or a light meal. Fried Cheese Curds & Jalapenos - Not bad. You get the creaminess from the cheese mixed with the jalapenos in a light beer batter. If you only like cheese or jalapenos and don't like both, it is easy to eat around them even though they are tossed together. Mozzarella Sticks - ok ok they took this off the menu about a month or so ago, but i am campaigning for their return. They were house made with some parmesan in the crust and they didn't have the super crisp shell that I really like in a mozzarella stick, but they 1, were one of the only places that had them downtown 2, didn't taste like mass produced freezer style sticks. They were served with a vodka cream sauce which was also delicious. Please bring them back. Fried Dill Pickles - pickle chips with a light batter. They have the sour dill flavor and the crispiness. I always say i won't eat them all, but most of the time i do. Knotty Burger - Their burger is really good. The patty has a good flavor and is juicy. Don't forget Mondays are Burger & Beer day!! Also, once upon a time, they had a sandwich/burger of the week or month, and they had a beef wellington burger. Keep an eye out for that if it ever returns. Spicy Italian Beef - This is a newer item I think. The beef does have a little spice to it, but also has the au jus to add additional flavor. Hot Fried Chicken - the chicken on the sandwich is HUGE. It wasn't super spicy, IMO, but it was still good. Steak Sandwich - one of my go-to's Swiss cheese with steak pieces cooked to temperature. Mac & Cheese - I have to admit, i get it without the peas, but it is creamy and flavorful. Once upon a time, they had a mac & cheese of the month. And once upon a time they did a buffalo chicken mac and cheese. If they ever offer it again and you are lucky enough to be there for it. I highly recommend it. Thursdays are a great day as its Trivia night AND half off bottles of wine. Big fan. The staff is usually very nice and relaxed. read more

This was our first stop when we arrived to San Diego and we ended up going back for dinner on another night. They are connected to Knotty brewing next door and feature 4 of those beers on tap as well as another dozen or so local micros. They also have a full bar if your after cocktails. On our first trip we did all appetizers. We got the beer cheese and pretzel, honestly neither of us liked the beer cheese much but the pretzel was excellent. We had the frickles, ahi poke stack, and chicken fingers which were all great. The poke stack was a top a huge mound of guacamole and served with crispy wonton chips, really good! A couple nights later we came in for dinner and stopped next door for a flight! I had the chicken picatta sandwich and my wife has the pot pie. They were both great. We're from out of town so it was nice that when we came back we got a warm welcome from a server who remembered us. I have got to admit that this place exceeded expectations. I knew before coming to get the ahi poke stack, and I also chose the cornflake chicken strips and potato nachos from the appetizer menu to supplement a dinner for 2 people. I WAY over-ordered... the nachos on their own would have been enough food! And they were fantastic: thinly sliced potatoes piled high with melted cheese, jalapeños, and shredded chicken tossed in buffalo sauce. I do wish there was a bbq sauce option, but the Ranch that came with the chicken strips helped offset the spice. The poke surprised me, especially because it's from a bar: the marinade was awesome, and the cucumber slices were soaked in mirin. It came with its own fresh chips but we also used the potato chips from the nachos to scoop it up. Just, wow. The chicken was... chicken. Mostly forgettable but the cornflake breading was a memorable version. Overall, I would definitely come back for a bite (the drink menu wasn't favorable to me). Sid elf fries were perfect as well. Not everyday you get a boatload of shoe strings on the side and I was down for them. Devoured the whole bag. Drinks are also top notch.
